Relius’ study
I imagined it as a modest suite, with room for shelves around the perimeter, a large work table in the middle, and not much else. The vantage point in this is probably from the back corner of the room. There’s a window in the wall to the right, and an angled drafting table as an alternative workspace. The open door goes out to the rest of the palace. To the left is the door to his bedroom.
Actually, I imagine his study to be stone, like a turret in a castle with large stones and a curved wall, but that doesn’t seem to fit the aesthetic of Attolia’s palace.
Progress pictures for interest.

The site of Sophos’ choice. He’s terracing some land and accidentally smashes his finger and realizes he could stay there if he wanted to and no one would know. But he doesn’t want his choice to be to stay a slave, especially the other choice is to save his kingdom.
The stick person is just for scale. I’m not sure what young olive trees look like. next to the large pile of rocks are some chisels and a hammer to split the large rocks into smaller pieces.

Sophos and the Magus make it without incident to Attolia, where they run afoul of some bandits who turfed them out of their campsite in the middle of the night. The beginning of the chapter says they camped in the forest, just off the road, so I don’t think the forest would be too thickly wooded. The road is just visible, with its stone walls/borders, and trees on the other side. Note the two saddlebags and blanket rolls.

An interior view of the field slave quarters in winter, including several pallets pushed together, several braziers for warmth, and vents at each end of the room for smoke escape. Through the closed door are two smaller rooms featuring the overseer’s rooms, and the other half of the barracks. By the open door sits Basrus’ stool. The clutter around the perimeter are tasks they can do indoors in the warmth, like sharpening their stonelaying tools.

The main entrance to Sophos’ dream library, through which he never ventures in his dreams. Featuring actual stacks of books, with a carved column at the end of each book. I think this adds some interesting architectural details that should be explored further

A second attempt at laying out Baron Hanaktos’ villa based on Sophos’ initial impressions but also trying to reconcile with later events. I am .... less than satisfied with this.

The kitchen in the Hanaktos villa where the steward has to figure out what to do with the latest stray named Sophos that Berrone brought home. For many reasons to be explored in future installments, this turns out not to be the actual kitchen since the kitchens are actually detached from the main villa.

The market on the mainland where Sophos is eventually bought by the local lord’s daughter. There’s a little stick person for sale. I actually imagine this scene very much like that scene in The Mummy - kind of a jumbled and chaotic, kind of dusty. Perhaps this marketplace has a solution for 23-point perspective as well.....

The slave ship of suspicious scale and proportion in the harbor at Letnos. The harbor piers are based off of paintings of ancient Greek edifices.

I think I’m officially done with Inktober, more or less, although the Queen’s Thief Storyboarding Project will continue
After Sophos and the Magus flee, they travel at night and off the main roads until they get to roads that are sufficiently large enough to ensure their anonymity, like this one. There’s a small campsite off the road, and I bet this is part of the road where there are small campsites set up for travelers at regular distances. This is where the Magus must defend his chicken drumstick from his growing ex-charge.

The Magus’ tent, and the wall through which they make a hasty exit. I would expect someone of the Magus’ stature to have a fancier tent, but he strikes me as the type of person to, drawing on his military background, would be ok with simple furnishings - a cot, his trunk, saddlebags. The only concessions to his status as advisor and scholar is the small writing desk. Based on its description, I think the tent should be a little more spacious, but I would also expect the Magus to object to anything so grandiose.
Behind them some distance is a copse of trees. I always imagined they escaped the tent and were able to find almost immediate shelter

Another attempt at the Hanaktos dining room. This is the most satisfactory version to date. Perhaps the next attempt will actually work on all fronts - how I’m reading the book and what I see in my mind.

After Sophos makes his choice, he heads to Berrone’s room to enlist her assistance. Here, Berrone’s room is tidy only by the ministrations of her maid Sylvie. The trunk is full of items and trinkets Berrone saw and wanted because they were pretty but then forgot about. I would imagine she has many trunks of collected items. Underneath her vanity is a dog bed - I can imagine her taking in a stray and it becoming her companion.
Lastly, the book mentions the carpeting in her room. I can’t imagine they did carpeting like we do today, with the foam and the staples and the plywood underneat, so here it turned into a very large rug that nearly covers the entire tile floor.

Yet another attempt at Baron Hanaktos’ villa, featuring a detached kitchen, a cobbled/paved forecourt, and a gate, in anticipation of future events. I like the detached kitchen and paths up to the house but this still needs work to make both historical sense, narrative sense, and practical sense.
