20 Questions For Fanfic Writers!

1: How many works do you have on Ao3?

Currently I've got 59 things on AO3!! There are a couple more on my long-defunct wattpad though, and I've got a bunch of December whump I need to catch up on too so there will be more

2: What's your total Ao3 word count?

72,774!! Wow!!! And like...90% of that is oneshots! Go me!

3: What fandoms do you write for?

Currently writing for DSMP and QSMP the most atm :O I also write for the PJO fandom, Homestuck, and DR on occasion, too. I get very tempted to write for Stardew Valley and Scott Pilgrim, and I have been. More than tempted to write CareBears stuff too. I'm in deep chat

4: Top five fics by kudos?

(Un)Lifetime Achievement Award, Take Your Secret Son to Work Day, Las Nevadas and the Frozen Fox, Alone I Began, and Of Lost Gods!

5: Do you respond to comments? Why/Why not?

For the most part yeah! I don't get too too much interaction and I just get!! So excited when I get comments! I love seeing what people say and I love to respond! But sometimes I don't, often cause I don't know what to say lol

6: What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

hmmm,,,good question! Probably Why Do I Cry? or maybe Famous Last Words? Gone are the Joys I Knew? I don't really know! I write a lot of sort of mopey sad fics ig LMAO

7: What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

mmmmmmm,,,,not sure for this, either! My Fundy Fluff Week stuff is all supposed to be sorta fluffy which is probably happy

8: Do you get hate on fics?

Not hate, per say, but comments on the accuracy of my characters, which kinda stabbed my ego a bit lol. It was a nice comment! But the way it was worded was so ouchie!

9: Do you write smut?

I've. Been tempted. As of right now I haven't, though!

10: Do you write crossovers?

Another one of me being tempted!! I haven't yet but I LOOOOVE to read them and so I'd love to write one sometime. (We aren't counting my old VLD Steven Universe au.)

11: Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I don't think so! Fingers crossed it hasn't happened lol I doubt it would

12: Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope! But if someone were to want to, I would say go ahead! Just send it to me so I can see :D sounds so cool!

13: Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Very recently was my first time doing a proper co-write/collab, which I did with my lovely friend Seven! I would love to do more they're so fun (and probably one of the only ways I'll easily end up writing a multichap KEKW)

14: What's your all-time favorite ship?

ouuuuu ive got a lot of pairings I really really cherish. Jercy my beloved, uhhh Valgrace is so silly, I like to consider myself one of The Kamuegi writers ever, and Pumpkinduo kind of holds an insanely special place in my heart

15: What's the WIP you hope to finish but doubt you ever will?

(Un)Lifetime Achievement Award as sad as it sounds. I love it so much and I'm so insanely proud of it and I love the story but there's soooo much planned and the person I was planning it with hasn't spoken to me in a while. I have hope that I'll finish it someday! Or at least get another two chapters out!

16: What are your writing strengths?

Uhhhhhhh,,,,I don't. actually know! I do a lot of flowery sentences ig? and I think I'm pretty good at angst and similar things

17: What are your writing weaknesses?

Making (and completing) multichap fics, getting ideas to write, finding the motivation to write, and I am definitely bad at planning things out in advance

18: Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I've done it pretty sparingly in the past, because I want to incorporate other languages and loooove language, but don't know any of them very well aside from English. But I try to do a lot of research before I add something in, and am 100% open and insistent that someone correct me if I messed up, or if there's another way to go about saying what I'm trying to say, or just to tell me more!

19: First fandom you wrote for?

Never published because I was a kid and it was. So Bad but !!! It was actually for the Minecraft Roleplay series Mary and Dad's Minecraft Adventure (MADMA) back around 2011-2013. I've been in mcrp hell for. a LONG time jesus christ

20: Favorite fic you've ever written?

ohhhh good question. Fullbury Records is very special to me and I'm ALWAYS thinking of what to add to that series, and (Un)Lifetime Achievement Award ofc is also very special to me. I think Heart to Heart is going places once I get back to writing the next chapter, too But I'm also veeeerrry proud of Famous Last Words, and it's very special to me as a projection piece LMAO

sometimes i forget what fandoms i've been in until they smash me in the head like a steel beam in the most incomprehensible combination of letters like "QSMP but in VLD" and then it just makes perfect sense in my head and i spend 2 hours of my life sketching rough designs like

etoiles doesn't know how he got caught up in all this, but he most definitely did. etoiles is not related to the garrison, but he's visiting his friend baghera where she's got a job there as a communications specialist.

it's not his fault at all that there's a very suspicious "meteor crash" while he's there. it's not his fault at all that baghera goes investigating. it's not his fault at all that he follows her (okay, maybe it kind of is, but it feels like something he has to do okay?) it's not his fault at all that former junior officer forever is snooping around too. it's not his fault at all that the "meteor crash" was actually just a star pilot cellbit in an alien spacecraft - star pilot cellbit who notoriously piloted a mission to the outskirts of the solar system with junior officer felps and lead scientists pac and mike, star pilot cellbit who crashed the ship onto the moon kerberos. anyway...

it's still definitely not etoiles' fault that they commit some form of crime/felony/something- he's not even sure what they just committed but now they have half the garrison on their tails and an unconscious should-be-dead star pilot, so they run. forever apparently knows how to hotwire a car and baghera apparently knows how to disable all the tracking devices and they're apparently good friends too, and etoiles is just standing there with someone's unconscious body in his hands and he's already this implicated, definitely an accomplice, and he's doomed anyway so he follows.

star pilot cellbit wakes up and apparently he and former junior officer forever are even better friends, and it's just etoiles who's. here. for some reason. apparently, etoiles is also the only person here with a shred of rationality, because star pilot cellbit starts talking about aliens, former junior officer forever talks about telepathic conversations, and even baghera starts talking about government level conspiracy cover-ups. and, again, etoiles is just. etoiles. baghera's friend that somehow got caught up in all of this.

former junior officer forever tries to show them the traces of alien civilisation and traces of telepathy but etoiles wanders off (something calls at him, traces his steps out for him), and lo and behold, he stumbles upon the alien spaceship that has been sending out telepathic brainwaves or something to former junior officer forever for the past 2 years that star pilot cellbit has been declared missing

the alien spaceship is a giant yellow lion and there's a giant yellow forcefield (????) around it that doesn't lower itself no matter how much the others try, until etoiles walks up and says hi to it. it's another thing, with the controls not reacting to, you know, star pilot cellbit, former junior officer who was a pilot forever, or even just communications specialist baghera who at least has an idea of what all these controls are.

etoiles, who is still just etoiles and has no clue what all these stuff is, accidentally touches a control, which lights up under his hand, which sends the alien spaceship careening into the sky and out of the atmosphere, out to the fringes of the solar system, and there's a giant alien spaceship out there and he fights it somehow, and apparently that's the giant alien spaceship that star pilot cellbit escaped from. somehow, he opens up a wormhole and the yellow alien lion spaceship zooms through it and now they're half the known universe away from home.

they exit the spaceship - star pilot shiro first with the most confidence, then everyone else when they see that they're not going to die of suffocation due to lack of oxygen or improper atmospheric pressure or something. there's a giant castle, which the alien lion spaceship roars at and it opens up???? and then they walk in and baghera pokes around something and two cryopods rise up from the ground and open up.

cue the alteans. altean prince roier mourns the loss of everything he's ever known as he wakes up 10000 decaphoebs into the future with nothing but the castleship and one other person. this one other person is his closest friend jaiden, who was made royal advisor just 5 vargas before the destruction of their world. both cling to the castleship because it's all they have left and all that truly belongs to them.

obviously, since these new people have arrived in the yellow lion, the alteans decide that this must be about reforming voltron, and now must be the time to strike back against the galran empire. there's uh, only one issue.

there's four people and five lions. they do not have enough people to form voltron.

there's another issue, actually, where they don't even know who matches up with which lion. there's only really one person who they can match a lion to, and that's the yellow lion with etoiles - who, is still the only person here to not actually be caught up in any of this space business. he's still here somehow. he does actually have some sort of fighting experience, though? he was in the fencing club when he was in university! altean prince roier probably should actually know how to match them, but he was never really that interested in that aspect of his studies.

because they only have the yellow lion and the black lion, they also need to collect the other three. and because they don't know which lion matches up with which person, they can't just send one person in to pilot the lion out, they have to send the yellow lion in to physically pick up the other lions. thank the stars that the yellow lion is one of the more sturdy lions.

these issues are only apparent to the alteans because, well, the humans have no clue what's going on. there's 5 spaceships to be piloted? well, there's 6 people here, that's not a problem to them. just get one of the alteans to pilot the last spaceship.

the alteans do not want to pilot the last lion, too attached to the castleship to abandon it.

it's a fundamental difference in their point of views.

it gets worse from here.

canon vld has the lion swap. this group plays the lion shuffle every single day as they try to figure it out.

except for etoiles of course - caring, kind, putting needs of others before his own, mighty heart, will lift the team up and hold them together as the left leg of voltron - he's perfect for the yellow lion, and yellow has already chosen.

jaiden may or may not have pulled some information out of a databank and started reading off the characteristics. look, it's the best they've got while roier tries to learn to identify quintessence and match it with the humans, okay? (quintessence is, unfortunately, not roier's strength. he's also learning about it from the databanks - which are good, but skills are always hard to learn from just reading, you know?)

but even the databank of lion pilot characteristics doesn't help them too much.

figuring out the decisive head of voltron is horrible (the black lion, born leader, in control, men will follow without hesitation) because it's supposed to be decisive but all of them are leaders in their own way, taking charge and solving disputes and altogether just.. being leaders.

if the black lion is bad, then the red lion is almost worse, because no one seems to wear instinct over skill, spur-of-the-moment decisions, or the specific balance of patience and stubbornness needed to work with red's temperament. it doesn't help that there's no clear leader, and so no clear right-hand man for the leader.

baghera fits right at home in the green lion ("Inquisitive... Uh, intelligent? Daring-" Jaiden pauses, squinting at the words for a little too long. "I think the Castleship's databanks have been corrupted by something."), but cellbit, too, fits in there nicely.

and the blue lion, jaiden reads out slowly, parsing through corrupted data. the blue lion holds the team together and provides what's needed at the time. which is, of course, absolutely no help at all, because what they need is a complete voltron.

so, really, all they have narrowed it down to is "forever is probably not the pilot for the green lion"

("Are we even sure they're all meant to be paladins?" Jaiden asks one day, even though they both know the answer to that. Roier laughs and goes back to meditating upon the quintessence like he has been for the past phoeb.)

either way, they go through the training exercises, learn how to use weaponry, and all the other things needed to prepare for war. etoiles learns how to fly a spaceship, which is very important because yellow is the only lion available and the only spaceship that can retrieve the other lions (because the lions are heavy, okay??)

the green lion is found first, pieced together from the last communication pings from 10000 decaphoebs ago. green is on a forest-like planet, buried under a pyramid, and they apologise to the natives at every step when yellow has to deconstruct the monument hiding green.

the blue lion is found next, buried under layers and layers of sand and plant life in an ocean planet. it was very, very troublesome to work through.

getting the red lion (lost to the empire) is too much of a risk, they all decide, after seeing how yellow struggled to get the other two lions.

and because they can't get red, the doors to black remain sealed shut.

they are also still one paladin short. the humans raise the possibility of finding someone else (from earth, please). the alteans say that the lions must have had a plan in mind when yellow brought 4 humans and only 4 to the castleship.

once they get green and blue, they essentially go through the equivalent of throwing paladins at the two lions that they do have and hoping that one will stick. green chooses baghera. blue remains stubbornly unyielding to either cellbit or forever. ("Maybe Forever?" Jaiden asks Blue. "Cellbit doesn't quite feel right for you." Blue does not quite agree, but gives an approving purr.)

with yellow, green and red down, and black waiting on the presence of the blue paladin, the pressure is on.

roier is no closer to mastering or even understanding quintessence, no more than he was when the humans first arrived, three whole phoebs ago.

forever is understanding, but so close to actually getting a taste of being a paladin, the feeling of rightness and belonging that the others wax poetic about. he's so close-

the humans raise ideas: various other parties that they've come across and feel like might fit, the occasional suggestion to find someone else back on earth that's immediately shut down. there's also one more suggestion - one more that really sets their other teammates on edge, far more than going back to earth does.

it's the suggestion that one of the alteans take on the mantle of blue paladin.

roier always reacts viscerally. the castleship is his home, it's all he has left of his entire planet. to abandon it to become part of a collective, to become something dissociated from altea (because voltron is its own entity in itself, despite being currently housed by the remnants of altea)? out of the question, absolutely out. it's his duty, his lineage, to keep the castleship under command. the castleship is where he should be, for now and forever.

roier likes going around the castle to cool off, walking around and retracing familiar paths in a barren ship. sometimes, he even spends time in the training room, when he thinks none of the humans will disturb him. he messes up, once. etoiles walks in when he's focused on taking down the gladiator, sword swinging with confidence and ease. it's a surprise, because the alteans haven't exactly shown their fighting skills around everyone else, and even in the rare occasions, it's always jaiden and not roier. and so, etoiles and roier both gain a sparring partner.

when the possibility of being the blue paladin is raised, jaiden goes quiet and thinks about it. that's almost worse than roier's more violent reactions because she looks like she's considering it. she considers it for so long, but she always declines, always confident and never elaborating.

(She thinks about it, because there is a universe where she pilots Blue. There is a universe where she sits in the Blue Lion, controls cool under her hands, and becomes a paladin - the Blue Paladin. There is a universe, Blue promises her, but this is not the one. They both know who needs to take the seat, who is the final piece needed to hold Voltron together, who is what Voltron needs at this point in time. She also knows that she cannot rush it, cannot force things to happen when they're not able to yet. She knows, but she takes so long to think about it, because there's a part of her that wants.)

everyone knows that she knows something about the blue paladin.

roier is the only one who doesn't ask.

so they have baghera in green and etoiles in yellow. they look at each other and laugh about their favourite colours, joking with each other about swapping armor, just for fun.

regardless, baghera does not hesitate as she takes to being green's pilot. it is confidence to the very depth of her bones and she steers green like she's been a pilot all her life and not a communications officer.

jaiden uncovers more literature on the lions. the coordination of the team as a whole is important, yes, but there's certain pairs that are more connected than the others. the legs - blue and yellow - must work in tandem to walk, just as the arms - red and green - must work in tandem to deliver the swiftest of attacks. the right side - blue and red - must be coordinated, same with the left side - green and yellow. the head - black - is closest to the arms, and thus the black paladin must have closer connections to red and green (emphasis on red, for red is black's right hand person) than blue and yellow.

it checks out so far, given that etoiles is yellow, and makes sense why no one quite fit for blue yet, because only baghera really knows etoiles. it makes sense, to the humans, of course. less so for the alteans, because they have less context for the relationships between the humans.

either way, the solution is clear: to get closer to one another.

there are mind meld exercises, trust exercises, team meals, team sleepovers (baghera's suggestion)... they try so hard to get closer and more comfortable with each other, doing their best to ignore the looming presence of war hanging over their heads.

there's also more of putting forever and cellbit in front of blue and hoping she picks one. she does not, of course, but she does not mash with cellbit at all. ("Maybe Forever?" Jaiden asks again. Blue huffs. "He has a bit of potential to pilot you. Right?" The answer, it seems, is not enough.)

So, it seems, that forever and cellbit should be the pilots for red and black. who pilots red and who pilots black? no clue, but it's enough for the team as a whole to risk it, tracking down the red lion and sending out the team to retrieve it.

(To say she had no clue at all is a lie. Jaiden suspected, something deep in her bones telling her that Forever fit Blue, yes, but he also would fit beautifully in Black, with Cellbit in Red as his right-hand man. Yes, that is how it should go. So maybe she guides Cellbit closer to Red instead of guiding both of them together when they're forced to split up.)

cellbit returns, victorious after proving his worth to red. he never really seemed the type to anyone, too calculative to be prone to split-second decisions, too skillful to have to rely on instinct. then they think about it a little more and- yeah, maybe it fits. maybe it sounds about right.

the black lion remains unresponsive.

("It's not just the presence of all the lions," Jaiden declares. No one knows how she knows this, but no one contests her knowledge. "It's not just the presence of all the other lions - the Black Lion also needs all the other lions to have bonded with their paladins.")

and so the hunt for the blue paladin begins.
