It was the kind of holiday party where everything felt just a little bit brighterālights twinkling from every corner, the smell of cinnamon and pine hanging in the air, laughter rising over soft jazz in the background. A sleek modern mansion nestled in the Hollywood Hills hosting the annual gathering.
You adjusted the straps of your dress while you sat at the bar. It was a sleek dark red velvet number you'd picked up on sale, hoping it'd help you fit into the glamorous party and not stick out like a sore thumb.
You glanced at your phone, scrolling through a few emails you needed to catch up on. As an assistant to one of the hottest new actors in Hollywood, your life was a constant balancing act, but tonight, for once, it was about a bit of relaxation.Ā
"Feel free to unwind," Your boss says, adjusting their outfit in the back seat of the SUV on the way to the festive soiree. "No need to keep an eye on me. Darren Eigan will be there, so I'll be stuck to him like glue."
You turn in your seat and lean against the bar, surveying the party. From across the room, you spy your boss eagerly chatting up the infamous director. They'd gushed about wanting to work with him for years. You couldn't blame them for trying.
Your eyes scanned the room again as you slowly sipped the tart purple wine. You'd never been a drinker, so the glass felt more like a prop than something to enjoy.
A raucous laugh catches your ear.
He was standing, drinking glass in hand, with a group of people near the opening of a dazzling archway decorated with little sprigs of green mistletoe tied with a bright red bow.
You knew a fake laugh from a mile away. You learned the craft when you moved to LA, having to grace a phony smile and compliment almost every second of the day.Ā
Dieter Bravo. Hollywood's reluctant starā known for his roles in blockbusters and indie films and winning an oh-so-coveted Oscar. You were surprised to see him at a party like this. He seemed to be the loner kind, much preferring to work on his art than bullshit his night away.
His salt and pepper curls helped prop the shades he wore like a shield, ready to slip the glasses down his hooked nose and sneak out the back door at a moment's notice. The first three buttons on his black silk shirt were left open; his golden skin glowed in the dim room. His black on black attire looked crisp and expensive, like the gray scruff filling his jaw and lining his lips.Ā
Something was magnetic about himāhis presence drew others in without trying or caring.
Someone in the group spoke, and Dieter laughed again. Another half-hearted smile tugged at his lips before falling into a thin, flat line.
You found yourself slipping from your seat and leaving your drink behind as you moved closer. Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe because Dieter resonated with your pain. Even in a crowd full of joy and glittering faces, you felt alone.
As you neared the group, your heel caught on an ugly red and green throw rug, making you tumble into the actor and ceasing the chatter.
"Whoa, hey now," Dieter blurts, catching you with one arm.
He weaved it securely around your waist as you both stumbled away from the group. You clutched his broad shoulders, a safe haven if you ever knew one, and steadied your heels back on the ground. Thankfully, his drink didnāt spill all over his suit and your dress.
"You okay?" Dieter's voice was warm and familiar despite the fact you'd had never met him before. His hands lingered on your waist, a wry thumb rubbing the dark butter like velvet, zeroing all his attention on you.
You cleared your throat and bid the flames that fanned your cheeks away. "I'm so sorry. I normally don't wear heels." You apologize. "Pobody's Nerfect!"
Dieter's dark eyes caught like a bright starscape in the sparkling overhead lights as he laughed wholeheartedly at the silly phrase. It was genuine and natural, forcing himself to hold his belly and bowl over with honest laughter.
As he catches his breath, he wipes a tear from his eye. "Did you come up with that?"Ā
You shrugged and waved a hand, "I wish. I'm not that clever."
"I highly doubt that." the actor comments, before taking a sip of his drink. āYou must be someone special to be invited to a party like this." He raises the glass toward the throngs of people filling the massive living room.
You cock your head. "MyĀ bossĀ is someone special. Thankfully, they need me like a goose needs a gaggle."
His eyes go wide once more. "There you go again!"Ā
You wave him off, but inside, you're melting.Ā
A waiter places a tray of food on a table to your right, distracting the both of you.
"Do you think anyone actuallyĀ eats these tiny hors d'oeuvres, or are they for like little Christmas elves?" Dieter asked, glancing at a tray of tiny canapĆ©s.
You chuckled. "I'm pretty sure they're just to make the people who aren't drinking feel productive. Like, here, eat this, pretend you're having a full meal."
He laughed again. It gets better every time you hear itā it lights up the room.Ā
"Wanna be productive with me?" he flirts, picking up one of the tiny snacks and holding it out to you with doe eyes.
You quirked a brow, hesitant for a split second before biting into the canapƩs. It was absurdly delicious for something so small, and you giggled, caught off guard by how natural it felt to talk to him.
"How do you look so... untouchable on screen and so normal off it?" you question without thinking.
Dieter tilted his head, his smile softening. "I'm really good at pretending." He drifts off, eyes wandering to the floor, thoughts drifting to the front of his mind before he takes a healthy swig from his glass. "Sometimes it's nice to escape yourself for a while."
You nod, understanding the need to run away.Ā Ā
"Are you working on any new art?" You try to lighten the mood, glancing at the red paint under his trimmed nails. "I can't wait for the next mind-bending piece from the one and only Mr. Bravo."
He smiled again, that knowing, almost mischievous look in his eyes. "Wouldn't little Ms. CanapƩs like to know." he teases, the warmth in his voice holding something more than just casual conversation.
Just then, someone at the bar called his name. Dieter turned his head, briefly distracted by the person waving him over. You take a timid step back, wishing you had more time with the artist, but before you can move, a reveler nudges you toward the archway where the mistletoe hangs.
You glanced at Dieter, who was still distracted by the call but now seemed to have noticed where you were standing. He looked at you with a wry smirk.
"Do you believe in fate?" he queries, his voice suddenly quieter.
You whisper, heart in your throat. "I suppose so."
He takes a step toward you, his leather wing tips shuffle against the floor, and for a moment, the noise of the party fades as the space between you closes. The dim lights cast shadows that make his features even more inviting. There was something in his gazeāsomething natural and soft that wasn't at all like the characters he portrayed on screen.
Without a word, he leaned in, his lips brushing yours in a kiss that felt like it had been waiting to happen. It wasn't dramatic or rushed, just slow and honest, as though the mistletoe wasn't just some holiday tradition but the beginning of something unexpected.
When you pull away, Dieter smiles again, this time with a hint of surprise. "That was... festive."
You chuckle, a little breathless. "I hope I'm still on Santa's Nice List now."
"The Nice List?" Dieter raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah, don't you want to get what you wished for?" You jibe, grin widening as you step back, giving him space to leave.
Dieter snorts, glancing toward the bar as more people wave him over. "Oh, but I already did," he winks.
Your face flames. You bite your cheek, trying your best to not squeal.
The two of you share one last look before the crowd pulls him away. Neither of you could quite shake the moment.Ā
As the night continued, shared glances from across the room kept you busy. Every conversation with someone new resulted in sincere apologies when you had them repeat what they said because a particular actor kept stealing your attention.
It seemed you distracted him just as much at times. You caught him dragging his eyes down your frame and back up again. He'd either cower like a thief caught red-handed or gaze at you like he wanted to watch the sun come up with you in his bed.Ā
The crowd of people slowly dwindled down as the clock struck midnight. Much to your dismay, you'd lost sight of Dieter an hour ago when he stepped out onto the back patio for a smoke with a fellow actor. You begrudgingly slipped on your heavy coat, headed down the front steps to the SUV, idling at the curb, and waited for your boss.Ā
Leaning against the passenger door, you slowly breathe in the crisp night. The heated feelings that swarmed your belly all evening finally simmered to a rolling boil.
"CanapĆ©s?"Ā
You jerk against the metal door as a voice chimes to your right. You clutch your chest with a gasp.
Dieter appears from the shadows, hands raised, like he's dealing with a stray animal. "Shit, sorry, it's only me." He cringes at the slight fear in your eyes.
"You bastard." You curse with a playful huff. "Wait, did you just call me CanapƩs?"
He flashes an awkward grin and anxiously rubs the back of his neck. "Well, I forgot to ask your name, and I didn't realize until after we kissed, and then I thought it was too late. I don't want to beĀ "that guy."Ā Ā Dieter mimes quotations in the air and swallows hard. "So, yeah."
You step closer, your heels clink against the cement, as you whisper your name and slink your arms around his shoulders. Dieter once again weaves his hold around your velvet waist, molding your body to his.
His plush lips brush across yours. "We don't have any mistletoe." He states cheekily.
"I would've kissed you without it in the first place." You confess, pressing your lips to his for another precious moment before he breaks the kiss.Ā
"Wanna go make it on Santaās Naughty list with me?"Ā
feel free to scream at me -> š

The antique store that was placed flush in the middle of the Bowery and Crime Alley had been there for a long time. The front of the shop was worn, the blue paint peeling and the name of the store ('Good Old Fashioned') was written across it in white cursive. Shockingly enough, all the windows were completely intact and the displays featured items such as grandfather clocks, teapots, lamps and jewellery boxes.
Inside of the shop, the walls are lined with bookshelves, filled with novels of varying ages. Small ornaments also decorate the shelves and vintage, well-crafted tables lined the aisles, each holding more items for sale. The floor was lined with handcrafted rugs and the walls that weren't covered in bookshelves held tapestries.
At the front of the shop, lay the counter. Redwood frame, glass on the front and top. Jewellery and watches shone in the display case. A few signs rested on the top along with an ancient cash register.
"No refunds." / "No smoking." / "Don't touch the teal clock."
A girl with purple hair, wearing an old band shirt too worn to see the logo and baggy grey jeans, stood behind the counter. She flicked through an old book lazily.

We are in the business of life! Our 2023 seed production in Ojai, California.
Spring never really got going here in Ojai, and as I write these words summer is nearly here. Between the heavier winter rains (this a 45 inch - and counting - rain year) and weeks of overcast days, moon cycles have been an afterthought.
The plants keep growing through the fog, rain, and cloudy weather. Kendall harvested our Fizz Kale plants two weeks ago, making this our first seed crop of the year. Fizz is a salad kale, with smooth, oak shaped emerald colored leaves and white veins. It was the very first lot of seed we logged for the company back in 2011, and was definitely in need of improvement. We focused on one thing: culling out early bolting plants, prolonging the usefulness and flavor of the leaves as they mature. (Given this kale is harvested young as a micro green, itās unsurprising this might have been not a priority, as harvest would typically occur long before any chance of flowering occurs)Ā
Up next is our largest production of Cherry Glow Breadseed Poppy. We did smaller runs of these in 2017 (me) and 2022 (Richard Gambino/Topa Vista Farmstand). The last few of Richardās packets are still available, along with a bulk size.Ā
(We also have a new variety we are adding: Flemish Peony Poppy. I first spotted this on Cacia Huffās Feral Farm instagram feed, and she sent me some seed stock)
We planted 10 pounds of Chimyan Garlic last fall, and harvesting was completed earlier in the month. Hardnecks arenāt always suitable for Southern California climates, but these bulbs look promising, and a quality planting stock would allow us to make this available to our customers in 2024.
New crops of Double White Hollyhock and Krishna Holy Basil are currently in the ground. Krishna seems to be the most temperature sensitive of the holy basils Iāve ever worked with. It really didnāt like this cold, and needs a really long production window for harvest. When it gets established, itās a sight to be soon. Rama Holy Basil seedlings are also ready to go in, Heavy Hitter Okra seedlings are at the nursery, and I think our first Ojai production of Zanadoo Corn is on the way as well. Another round of Hibiscus was necessary, as we are packing the last of our current seed supply today, and it will likely be gone before the summer is up.
New crops of Silk Mullein, Dense Flowered Mullein, Clary Sage, and Marshmallow are well on their way to producing. Stinging Nettle and Scarlet Bee Balm will likely just increase our planting stock and not be available for sale this year.
After adding Double Black Hollyhock and Madder to the catalog in this past year, and feeling a little inspired by the work of Ride and Dye Ojai, Iāve been wanting to further expand the availability of our dye plants: Japanese Indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) seemed like an easy place to start and is now in production. I also had two other proper Indigo species āTrueā Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) - or Guatemalan Indigo (Indigofera suffruticosa) we sent to the nursery, but the germination was too scanty to move forward. Next year!
Steve put a lot of flowers in the ground in this past fall-winter so itās possible that a lot more will be coming than planned, or just refreshing/replenishing existing stalks. Iām pretty happy to see a new crop of Gaillardia coming on. Iām spying some mixed yarrow and bachelor buttons and a lot of silvery rose strawflower.
Iām continuing to work with my Southern California natives / rugged perennial crops. I planted a lot more Western Vervain this year, and new crops of Black, Purple, and White Sages are nearly ready. I continue to have problems with harvesting quality Hummingbird Sage seed, but after taking a year to experiment with harvesting and timing methods, Iāll give it another go. This is the first year Iāve worked with Cleveland Sage, and itās looking spectacular.
Elderberry and Matilija Poppy will likely be back in the catalog too. These are quite easy to propagate clonally (root divisions or just straight up branch plantings), but it seems people enjoy the challenge of starting things from seed.
Our network of producers has grown substantially over this past year, and we intend on highlighting their crop production for the company in another blog post later in the year!

My favourite wallet is no longer produced (as far as I can tell), so I decided to copy its pattern and teach myself to sew it. Bonus, I get to use š¤šaestheticš¤š colours.
The original is a rugged trifold wallet with velcro closure. The fabric appears to be high-denier nylon or polyester canvas, with a waterproof PU backing.
For my copy, I used a black 400 denier nylon pack cloth with waterproof PU backing; and a puple 400 denier water-resistant polyester canvas with a neat twill weave. I bound the wallet edges in black 3/4" (10mm) wide twill tape, and used a scrap of purple 1" (25mm) wide nylon webbing for the coin pouch pull tab. For thread, I used Glide Trilobal Polyester in "Iris".
I chose Snag-Free Velcro, which has both hooks and loops in the same tape. The loops tend to be just a smidge taller than the hooks, which means you need to press the two tapes together to get good adherence (hence reducing unwanted adherence!). This might end up being a poor choice for a wallet, as I don't typically press my wallet closed with much force, and just folding it together isn't always enough to make the Velcro stick.
On the exterior, there's a little coin pouch with velcro closure
Brand new, there's a clear vinyl ID window on the centre panel of the original wallet's exterior, but this window always breaks in my experience, so I omitted it on mine.
Inside, there are three areas for holding cards, and a bill slot behind the card slot panel.
The left and centre -thirds have two side-loading card holders each; one front and back. In the front slot, the cards are partly visible; in the back, cards are hidden. The right panel also has two card holders, these are vertical-loading; in the back slot, cards are hidden by the cards in front.
I usually keep my tappable bus card in the centre of the bill slot (the area closest to the exterior of the closed wallet), so that I can tap the entire wallet to pay my bus fare. I added an elastic to help keep the bus card in its place, but I'm not entirely sold on this feature yet.
To protect my tappable payment cards, I would usually keep them in an RFID blocking envelope in a vertical card slot panel. But since I'm sewing my own entire wallet, I decided to line the whole card slot panel with RFID blocking fabric.
I also added a little flap to keep my receipts separate from my bills.
This being my first attempt at copying the wallet, I learned a lot in the process!
When this wallet wears out, I'll sew myself another; but with some changes, for sure.
Oh! Also!
The RFID-blocking fabric passed two basic tests:
wrap my phone the fabric (try to keep the wrapping only 1 layer thick); the phone has no reception (tested by sending myself emails; having someone call me; attempting NFC tap) ā
with a tap-enabled payment card inside, tap the closed wallet at a tap-enabled point-of-sale till during payment; payment does not work ā
Unfortunately, the wallet also blocks my bus pass. But I'd rather it block too much than too little; I can figure out a different solution for the bus pass.
I'm quite pleased with how this turned out, and am looking forward to making one for my partner!

For those who are curious of how the move went. Things that happened.
We raced afternoon thunderstorms the entire weekend. Forced to be in a heat advisory. Water was the enemy and the friend
I pulled a cart of weights that was over 250 pounds. My arms were on fire
Wasp 1 Dad 0
Dog 1 brother 0 (dog dragged my brother. He's okay. Dog was just too excited)
Official day 1 started at 8am and ended at 3am
Hubris 1 Dad 0 (the anger me and my mom gained from being told to just wait around for 1 hour turned into 4 and we were somehow in trouble. But we ain't gonna get into that cause I'm keeping the list short and with some level of class.)
Roomba 1 Dog 0 (he was put up for too much barking)
A turtle was spotted in the driveway
Yarn 1 Dad 0 (me and my mom may have a lot of yarn, but we buy it on sale. Hobbies are important to health)
Day 3, my ankle is killing me. I found my ankle support and was able to continue on with no problem. (later that day, I took proper rest)
The sewing machine has safely been brought over. My dad almost put it on a rolling cart which would have broken it. He does not know how angry I would have been if I lost it(the machine is only 4 years old, that's practically new!)
Dad overworked everyone. The consequences of his actions are a thing
On the break day, I went to the store and bought a lamp. It's cute!
My Brother had to get IV Fluid. I'm on puppy watch. Been told to play video games as my break and watch the puppy. I wrote fic instead lol
4 hours of IV Fluid and medically required relaxation time
I wrote almost 700 words wooo
I wanted a green bathroom. why is every green bath mat ugly and not the right shade. bathroom is now going to be a light purple
Couldn't find a rug for my bedroom that I liked and decided to start my own rug
Day 5, we begin to worry about tropical storm Debby
Bathroom plans changed again. I'm being loud and Hispanic
my beanbag is here and in a room where I will use it again
My granddad has decided to race a tropical storm so he can see the new house. Hilariously due to location it's actually better if he gets here to sit out the storm
Cramps are evil
My granddad made it here a day before the storm
I ordered a desk. My wallet wants a break
Thank you Debby for the maditory break
My mom can already tell I'm pissed off cause my dad thinks I'm not working hard enough. She keeps trying to tell him I'm doing a lot
My mom keeps buying things for me to try and keep me calm cause she can tell my dad is gonna cause me to go off at him
I at least get easy supply of fries
My mom is calling my dad out finally after I said I don't want to see or talk to him tonight. We want to be appreciated
Dog took over the bean bag. he is too cute sleeping on it. I guess we can share
The rain from debby is very soothing. i love rain sounds
I slept through two tornado warnings. Considering nothing happened, I'm fine but a good reminder that tornado warnings should be loud as hell
Dog killed a cicada by trying to eat it
Its been officially over a week and I'm finally on a rest day
We are celebrating with Korean BBQ. Everyone got dressed up after a week of workout clothes. We missed street fashion
After not being able to really play genshin after a while, I almost cried very silly tears of joy that I could sit down and play a video game. I did not know I missed Ayato like that lol

I want a Tall Pointy Tower because I also want the vantage point to be able to see when people are going to arrive at my place of business / home. Got to have time to put on my outfit for wizard work instead of my stars and moon pajamas!
A cabin in the woods would also allow bad people to hide behind trees and then shoot you with a crossbow. Sure it might be a little bit easier to hide but if somebody wants to run a business you would rather be easier to spot in my opinion. I also think I would want to protect the wildlife if something goes astray by having it up above the tree line or on a cliff in case something explodes, catches fire, or leaks. I've got to do my part to prevent catastrophic disaster!
It would be like a live-in store: the downstairs would have all of the for-sale potions and alchemist's armour, ingredients, spells, scrolls... stuff like that. I could even have a section for kids to learn how to craft basic salves that can turn their skin green and purple, or a flying rug ride for the little ones to be entertained while mum spends way too long looking around in the poisonous plants section in a personal debate over whether to buy them because 'damn they're very pretty but they could also kill me'. There could be a section for enchanted swords and you would see a lot of men boasting about how they can wield the weapons but a lot more women would be actually buying them.
Then there's the upstairs section of my beautiful tower where I would have my downey bed and fireplace, my plush blanket, my herbal teas, a meat pie baking in the oven, and a ton of hanging vine plants just starting to flower in little pink and yellow blossoms, adding a touch of color to the grey and mossy green stone walls where the tapestries and shelves filled with projects and books don't quite cover.
I would have a soak in my claw footed bathtub, deep enough to submerge two people at the same time, after a hard day of hunching over in the garden out back digging up roots to make a new herb bed, and then afterwards I would dig around in my wardrobe full of robes and sweats alike for something cozy. My hat hooks for the various wizard and witch hats to match my outfits would be just next to the spiral stairwell, and on the opposite side of the fireplace to prevent it from over boiling would be a section for a brewing stand so that I can make my concoctions in peace instead of in public view where somebody could be a little bit too mischievous and end up tossing a toad in my caldron thinking it would be funny, either making a massive toad monster or just fucking up somebody's healing spell and that would be very good for future business, now would it?
Oh yeah and the broomstick organizers for guests, like a bicycle parking spot. I could have a little gargoyle guarding it so that nobody would grab the wrong broom.
I could also have a barrier on my upper canopy so that only me and any specific guests that I allow to do so could land on it and enter my personal room.
And of course my cat, but it's not like I could stop her anyways. She does what she wants.

Shabby Chic Decorating Tips
Shabby chic has a reputation for being expensive, but you can easily bring this style to your home on a budget. Whether you paint your own furniture or buy shabby chic pieces, all it takes is a bit of sanding and a few coats of paint to achieve the recognizable rugged, time-has-passed look of this decorating style.
Tips When Decorating Shabby Chic
When you're decorating shabby chic, a neutral color palette is key. Choose whites, creams and tans for walls and furniture to provide a calming backdrop that's a blank canvas for small pops of character in pastel hues like misty blues, barely pinks and washed-out mints. Natural textures like crochet, linen and lace add depth to this look.
If you love the idea of shabby chic but find neutrals boring, earthy tones are a smart alternative. Shades of sand, taupe and grey feel neutral but warming and play up the laidback luxury aesthetic that defines shabby chic, reports Better Homes and Gardens.
Light neutral shades of blue, green and purple also work well with shabby chic decor. You can even create a soothing and relaxing space with soft floral patterns, including floral wallpaper, bedding and throw pillows. If you want to add more color, try painting a piece of furniture or using fabric paint pens to stencil flowery motifs on bedding and pillows.
Inspiring Shabby Chic Decor
Like the country cottages that inspired shabby chic, rustic materials and a worn-in appearance are important elements in this decorating style. Keep in mind, though, that the rustic ambiance should not become cluttered or messy. Instead, choose items that balance texture and material. For example, a quaint nightstand with chipped paint pairs nicely with a glass vase and coarse rope tabletop.
Similarly, pastels are often associated with shabby chic because they add a romantic and feminine touch to living spaces. Light greens, dusty pinks and sky blue hues work well for drapes, furniture, decor and wallpapers.
The Finished Space notes that shabby chic is also an excellent choice for home lighting because it promotes natural light. This allows for a soft glow that enhances the beauty of wooden furniture and other rustic accents. It also complements the delicate colors of lace and floral patterns. Moreover, the natural light can highlight imperfections that make a room feel even more comfortable.
The Main Key to Shabby Chic Decoration
As shabby chic decor has evolved, many have come to embrace the cozy elements that this style is known for. Homebliss notes that a key component of shabby chic is the use of fabrics and textures that are soft to the touch. These can include ruffles, checks, stripes and flower-patterned patterns.
Other shabby chic decorating ideas often include using a combination of vintage pieces and comfortable slip-covered furniture. This is where flea market finds and thrift store pieces can shine, but you can also make use of new furniture that appears old through sanding and special finishes.
The bed is often the focal point in a shabby chic bedroom, with a duvet, quilt or comforter featuring floral or other feminine motifs. Layer with throw pillows and shams in a variety of colors. A flannel bedsheet set adds to the warmth of this decorating style, but you can also go with linen or cotton instead. Visit several online property sales sites such as property.thegardengranny to get cheap chic houses.
