A picture may be worth a thousand words but it doesn't tell the whole story. When you see a dog on a chain, do you assume they are neglected? Unloved? Left alone with no interaction like a "yard ornament"? Do you assume the dog has no shelter because her carefully built and maintained dog house is just out of frame?
Or do you realize that you are seeing a single moment, a snapshot in time, showing nothing more than a split second in the life of a dog that is loved, who is fed the most nutritionally complete food money can buy, who is given exceptional vet care, who sleeps in her owner's bed, and rides in the truck everywhere? A dog who is on that chain for a mere fraction of her life -- to eat, to potty, and to enjoy the fresh air outdoors (where she would prefer to be anyway given the choice) while her owner is unable to supervise her to ensure her safety. She doesn't live on that chain, and neither do a majority of sled dogs. They live their lives in harness doing what they love, on the trail in some of the most beautiful places on earth, in play groups in fenced in yards with their canine friends, at demos and educational seminars where they are showered with love from children and adults alike, on tours where they make dreams come true for people from all walks of life, and side by side with the mushers who love and cherish them just like you love and cherish *your* pets. The chain is a method of containment, one that has been studied by Cornell University and shown to be as humane a form of housing as kenneling. Still uncomfortable with it? Visit a sled dog kennel. Ask questions. Don't be misled by propaganda or outdated information. We mushers are more than happy to share our love of this sport and the dogs with you and show you how we operate our kennels and why we do things the way we do -- because it is what is in the dogs' best interest.
#pullyourowndamnsled ? No thanks, the dogs would be too upset with me if I left them behind! Redline Siberians
