#probably the excuse was ''it's not blackface bc in context it's just a bad disguise'' which is what trading places did in 1983

ivie anderson was so talented, she was a member of the duke ellington orchestra for over a decade but had to quit bc of chronic asthma. tw for blackface at the end of the musical number bc the marx brothers are trying to "disguise" themselves but i like this video bc it credits the performers
i think the marx brothers movies may have been attempting to be progressive for their time in their portrayal of Black people but it's still a sour note in the otherwise hilarious and culturally significant films... the musical number in "a day at the races" is like, these performances are outstanding and it's great to get a paycheck in the great depression but idk how much of a paycheck it was? it was a huge ensemble though. i think the idea was to show them as sympathetic, as religious, and talented but "exotic," and i am kinda glad it exists to capture the talents of Black artists of the time and also what maybe passed for a "progressive" portrayal of Black people. of note is that the marx brothers were jewish, at least one of the writers was jewish, and one was homosexual. maybe that was a factor in an attempt at a "positive" portrayal even if it doesn't exactly hold up..
#apparently the studio wanted this cut - not bc of the blackface but bc of the heavy focus on Black performers#so the marx brothers fought to keep the scene in#but they did wear blackface 😬#it wasn't in the usual context of making a caricature but it was still blackface and that sucks#i wonder what the Black performers thought at the time if they thought it was worth it to get a musical number almost entirely to themselves#probably the excuse was ''it's not blackface bc in context it's just a bad disguise'' which is what trading places did in 1983#since around that time (40s) blackface was beginning to be recognized as racist#i think both things can be true. that they were trying to be progressive but were in fact racist#i still think there's value in the performances and i'm glad they weren't cut from the film bc they'd be lost#i'm just not an authority on what the impact really was. if there was any good or if it was all soured.#if it was important to have their musical number make it into the final cut#i can't say bc i'm white and it's not my place#i remember being a really little kid watching this dance number mind blown and then secondhand embarrassment from the grease paint#the films are still special to me but parts of them are i hate this word but... problematic#but having this recording of the talented ivie anderson who died at only 45 i think is culturally significant#bc there don't seem to be many recordings of her?? esp not on film
