Photos from a stopover at Prickett's Fort State Park after visiting Blake's grandmother. You can search my tumblr for prior posts about the history of the fort and the Job Prickett homestead or read about it here. Broadleaf arrowhead (Sagittaria latifolia) is now blooming along the river and butternuts have started dropping, meaning the end of summer is not far off. Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is similar in appearance and closely related to black walnut, but has oval-oblong fruits rather than round ones.

Get outdoors with a hike in North Central West Virginia
Get outdoors with a hike in North Central West Virginia
North Central West Virginia is known for world-class hiking for every skill level. There are a number of picturesque trails winding through forest, across ridge lines or to peaks with stunning views of the surrounding hills. Rail trail systems exist in many West Virginia counties, including Harrison and Marion. At Prickett’s Fort State Park, the rail trail goes through the Meredith Tunnel. This…

We had another beautiful fall day with some surprising late season color clinging to the local hills. To take advantage, Blake and I made a short trip down the interstate to Prickett's Fort State Park, which features a reconstructed refuge fort representative of the kind that protected settlers on the Virginia frontier in the late 1700′s. More about the history of the park and local area here. The Foundation conducts demonstrations of traditional frontier skills, such as blacksmithing, spinning and weaving, candle-making, etc., using costumed interpreters during the park’s tour season from April through October.

I queued these photos from a late September visit to Prickett’s Fort State Park in my “to-be-posted” bin and then forgot about them. At the time, the Prickett’s Fort Memorial Foundation was offering limited tours of the reconstructed frontier fort (groups of six people or less with masks required), but the usual workshops and sales of homemade goods were curtailed. In more normal times, one of the staff’s volunteers pens her own sheep at the fort for wool, which the staff meticulously rove and hand-spin into yarn. During the pandemic, the sheep have been allowed to graze in peace at a nearby meadow (much to their relief, I’m sure).

Nodding bur marigold (Bidens cernua) is an especially beautiful, marsh-loving beggarticks with sunflower-like flower heads that droop (or nod) as they grow heavier. A reseeding annual in the aster family, the plant has narrowly-lanceolate, sharply-serrated leaves that clasp the stem in an opposite arrangement. The flowers are composites with eight notched, yellow ray flowers and a raised, central button of pale orange disk flowers. The seeds that form from the flowers are flat and barbed and attach to human clothing and animal fur as a means of dispersal. They’re a valuable food source for ducks and other waterfowl. Nodding bur marigold is a late summer to early fall bloomer and will continue to produce a profusion of flowers right through the first frost. The photos above were taken along the lagoon at Prickett’s Fort State Park.

Although the proliferation of late season asters can lead to some identification challenges, crooked-stemmed aster (Symphyotrichum prenanthoides), or zig-zag aster, is fairly easy to identify by its coarsely-toothed, spatula-shaped leaves, which clasp the stem, and the tendency of its stems to zig-zag between leaf nodes. A gregarious perennial, the plant masses in showy clumps along stream and forest edges, producing graceful sprays of pale lavender flowers. Its clumping habit and attractive foliage make this aster a highly-desirable addition to a native wildflower garden, particularly for late season color. A tea made from the plant’s roots was once used by Native Americans and traditional medicine practitioners to treat fevers in babies and colds in adults. Like many of our edge-loving native wildflowers, crooked-stem aster is being driven out of its habitat by invasive species and over-browsing by deer, and is now listed as threatened in some parts of range. The photos above were taken at Prickett’s Fort State Park.

During the years preceding the Revolutionary War, numerous refuge forts were built along the (then) western frontier of the British colonies to protect settlers from Native American attacks. Prickett’s Fort, erected in the mid-1770′s on land owned by Jacob Prickett near present-day Fairmont, West Virginia, served as a gathering place for local homesteaders in times of crisis. It was a self-contained community consisting of blockhouses, cabins, a meeting house and a stock house. The original structure was dismantled in the late 1700′s as the threat of attacks decreased. The Prickett’s Fort Memorial Foundation reconstructed the fort near its original location in the mid-1970′s, based on a generic design that incorporates elements from various forts of the day. The site is now a state park that also features the Job Prickett House, built in 1859 by the great grandson of Jacob Prickett, an historic cemetery dating back to the pioneer days, boat ramp access to the Monongahela River, and a connector trail to the Mon River Trail system.
