That makeup poll reminded me of when you used to do the makeup giveaways and lipstick recommendations. What have you been wearing lately?
Holy moly, I'd completely forgotten about the giveaways! Talk about a blast from the past. The last one I did (according to my #giveaway tag) was 8 whole-ass years ago. Absolutely wild.
Anyway, hit the jump to see what I'm rocking these days as far as makeup goes:
Here was today's look. Admittedly, it was a teensy bit more than my usual day-to-day look, since I went out to lunch with one of my closest friends (who always looks 13/10).
Tumblr media
Anyway, let's pretend it's 2014 again and do a makeup look breakdown.
Most of what I wear these days is drug store makeup. The prestige brands must be sweating bullets, because the drug store brands have really stepped up their game.
Lipstick:
I've been really disappointed with Beauty Bakerie's formula over the last couple of years—it just doesn't have the staying power it once did. Probably because the company has been in a tailspin since like 2019. I think it just got bought out.
So my go-to for the last year or so has been Maybelline's Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick. I'm super impressed with both the longevity of the wear and the color selection. Since I started dyeing my hair teal, "Romantic" (#30) has been my shade of choice.
The Matte Ink Liquid Lip goes on pretty thick and tacky, and it takes a long time to dry down on its own. I'm not that patient. My recommendation is to dry it in stages with a hair dryer on the lowest heat setting. Apply your bottom lip first, dry it completely, then repeat with your upper lip. Once it's dry, it ain't budging. It will last all day and through all types of meals, including soups and oil-based foods.
Also, it's $9.19 at Target and even less on Amazon. All the staying power of OG Beauty Bakerie and half the price!
Mascara:
I use two mascaras, because I have two sets of lashes that need to do two different things.
Bottom lashes: E.L.F. Lash XTNDR. Because bottom lashes are much more delicate, a regular defining mascara is fine. E.L.F.'s mascara gives me length and definition without clumps or flaking. My eyes aren't irritated by it at the end of the day, either, which is always a plus. Currently $7.00 on Amazon.
Top lashes: Maybelline's The Colossal (waterproof). This was actually recommended to me by a coworker. Her lashes always looked incredible and when she told me it was Maybelline I was floored. No Tarte, no Too Faced, no Benefit, and no Urban Decay has ever given me the definition, length, and fullness that I get with The Colossal. I wear waterproof because my lashes are stick straight and, even after being curled with a curler, will fall after 30 minutes with a regular mascara. It's currently $7.73 on Amazon!
Eyeshadow
I don't really wear eyeshadow on the regular anymore, mostly because I get so much glam from the mascara that I don't need it. But when I want to go the extra mile, my tried and true is a prestige brand, but it's lasted me forever so it was well worth the price.
The Urban Decay NAKED palettes really do live up to the hype. I got myself the NAKED3 version about a year ago, which has more pinky-neutral tones that really complement my skin tone and green eyes.
Because I have hooded eyes, I don't go crazy with it (it's not like you'd see a lot of it anyway). I stick with one to two matte shades ("Limit" and "Nooner"), and then I'll use one of the dark shades ("Darkside") as eyeliner. Hooded eyes means having more eyelid skin, which doesn't always jive with liquid liners or pens. I have an easier time applying a thin line of shadow with a tapered eyeshadow brush (again, nothing fancy or winged—my eyelid/brow folds eat most of it anyway).
The NAKED palettes are pretty pricey at $59 each, but a couple of times a year Ulta does a 50% sale and you can get them for $24.50!
Foundation
Sike! I'm 37 years old and I still don't know how to apply foundation or how to contour. At this point, I'm too afraid to try.
Luckily, I have my mom's good skin and I stay out of the sun as much as I possibly can (and wear sunscreen every day no matter what), so I don't really need it.
+
So, for those of you who wear makeup: what are your go-to's? I'll happily take recommendations!

Favorite makeup products and favorite beginner makeup products?
Oooooh, so I’m going to list my favorites here, and stick to one of each for overall fave/beginner (which I’ll categorize as drugstore/inexpensive options).
Overall:
Mascara: Benefit roller lash is my go-to when it comes to a prestige brand. It applies well, stays on, and is just super super NICE.
Lipstick: I go back and forth on this between Anastasia Liquid Lipstick and Tarte lip paint, and I think it’s gotta be the ABH. It stays on better, it comes in a much easier to apply format, and I think it smells better, too.
Foundation: I LOVE Anastasia Luminous. It’s really expensive, but it goes a long way... and it’s buildable, comes in a ton of color shades, and isn’t heavy. It stays, too, which is GREAT.
Concealer: Kat Von D (or whatever it’s being called now) Lock It has always done the trick for me.
Bronzer/Highlighter: Anastasia Amrezy is SO GREAT, but I also really like BECCA’s Champagne Pop... it’s super super subtle at first swipe.
Eyeliner: Beauty Bakerie lillipop (I think I’ve said this before) and KVD tattoo liner in trooper. I swear both of these would stay on through a damn firehose being sprayed at my face.
Eyeshadow: So, while it’s not super expensive or considered a prestige brand, I’m gonna go with BH cosmetics for this, because all of their stuff is really nice, very pigmented and really blendable. I have not found a SINGLE palette of theirs that I have been disappointed with. My favorites? the Carli Bybel palette by BH (not the Anastasia one, even though that one’s nice too)
Anastasia makes really nice palettes, too. Norvina is beautiful, and so are Soft Glam and Subculture.
* My favorite ever eyeshadow is actually a loose pigment that came in the KVD Serpentina palette, and it’s this gorgeous gold dust that I would bathe in if I could.
Setting Spray: Urban Decay Up All Night. No questions asked.
Primer: Tarte made this incredible primer with their Rainforest of the Sea collection that I haven’t been able to find for a while, but I loved it. It’s very similar to the mattifying poreless that they currently have, but it’s not quite the same.
Facewash: Origins Checks and Balances.
Drugstore/Beginner:
Mascara: L’oreal Voluminous. I swear by this stuff, and when I travel and don’t want to take my super expensive stuff, this always comes with me.
Lipstick: Wet N Wild catsuit. There are a million and a half colors, it’s almost an exact dupe for Jeffree Starr velour lipsticks... an it’s $5. You literally cannot go wrong, and it doesn’t dry my lips out which is a plus.
Foundation: I’m a sucker for NYX total control drop foundation. Can’t Stop Won’t Stop is also a good choice, but it’s a little thicker and heavier.
Concealer: Maybelline Fit Me has always done what I need it to... Neutrogena HydroBoost is a good choice, too.
Bronzer/Highlighter: I have a million different Wet N Wild bronzers and highlighters, and I use every single one of them. They’re really pigmented and really really fun to play around with because they all SHIFT. I love them.
Eyeliner: I don’t use regular eyeliner pencils, because I think they’re hard to control, so NYX Matte Liquid and NYX Epic Ink are my choices here.
Eyeshadow: Colourpop anything. I have never met a Colourpop shadow that I have hated, and for the price, you cannot beat them. I do, however, think that they have made more than enough Disney related products and need to stop. Two favorites? SOL and Exes and Ohs. The Super Shock shadow singles ... I collect those and I think I have about 15 of them? It’s a problem.
Setting Spray: NYX has matte/dewey options, and so I like both depending on the look I’m going for.
Primer: Maybelline FaceStudio. It’s easy to use, impossible to use too much of, and it’s really gentle.
Facewash: Neutrogena Hydro Boost line is my go-to. I try to vary the types of face wash that I use so I cycle through three or four, but this is one that I always go back to.

PLAY! by Sephora: Worth it?
PLAY! by Sephora is one of the newer subscription boxes on the market, but has quickly gained a loyal following due to the quality of products (only brands that Sephora sells) and perks like complimentary mini makeovers, tutorials, and a 50 Beauty Points card with every box. PLAY is currently $10 per month.
It's difficult to know the true value of each box, for a few reasons: first, all Play subscribers do not get the same products - I believe this is partially based on your beauty profile, but also due to the sheer amount of subscribers, they can't send the same products to everyone.
Also, just because a box is worth $30 doesn't mean it's worth that to you - if you're not a perfume wearer or dislike matte lipsticks and masks, for example, you aren't going to be getting the same value from the box than someone who will use every item.
Below, I’ve broken down the past three months’ PLAY boxes.
 JULY

Aside from the lipstick (which I’ve tested before and found very drying), I’ve tried every sample so far and will definitely use them. So again, for $10 this is a good value.
Side note – the Marajo products are SO moisturizing and gentle on hair. I highly recommend trying it if you’ve been wanting to cut out shampoo but can’t go the full no-poo route.

Atelier Cologne Clementine California Absolue Pure Perfume
Sample size: 1.5mL
Full size: 100mL - $135
Sample value: $2.03
TOTAL BOX VALUE $51.19
Hot damn!! This box is an insane value. I’ll absolutely use the mascara, Tattoo Liner and primer, so that’s $26 already. I’ll probably give away the others, but it’s still worth it for me.
*******************************
All in all, PLAY is a great option for trying new products from prestige brands found at Sephora.
But again, the question of whether it’s worth it is very subjective based on your own preferences.
For me, though, it’s an amazing value. Thanks to this box, I haven’t bought mascara, blush, face wash, eye makeup remover or hair products (shampoo/conditioner aside) in over a year - which absolutely covers the full $120/year cost of PLAY. And then there are hundreds of dollars of additional samples over the course of the year! (Pro tip: trade samples with your subscription-box-loving friends. I give a coworker my moisturizer samples in exchange for all the dry shampoo samples she gets from Ipsy!!)
PLAY! BY SEPHORA: WORTH IT.
Have you tried PLAY? Are you happy with the products you receive?

I know you as the Red lip lady and wanted to know if you have any budget red lipsticks you recommend. I looked up the one you liked and it's a pretty penny for me at the moment.
There are plenty of budget-friendly lippies out there that can hold their own against the prestige brands. Here are the best ones IMO:
Nyx Soft Matte Cream (in Monte Carlo & San Paulo)
Morphe Matte Lipstick (in Lust)
Revlon ColorStay Overtime Lipcolor (in Nonstop Cherry)
Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink (in Pioneer)
Ulta Velvet Matte Crayon (in Ruby)
I linked to them all on ULTA.com because there's usually a $3.50 coupon floating around the site, which won't work on prestige brands but will for these! The Nyx Soft Matte Cream is also on sale at ULTA for $4.87 (as of 8/30, online only).
Best of luck! 💋

MAC Cosmetics needs no introduction. A well known name in the contemporary cosmetics world. Beauty enthusiasts have MAC in their kitty or bucket list! Today, let’s have a look at MAC’s cruelty-free status!
This Canada based makeup brand has now spread its wings all around the globe. MAC’s Ruby Woo is ‘the’ lipstick for all red lip lovers for a couple of decades now. You can’t ‘un-see’ the mesmerizing effects of Studio Fix Powder Compact, Fluid Foundation or Fix+ as well.
However, MAC has been criticized time and again for its shady cruelty policies. Should you buy a MAC product as a cruelty-free supporter or leave it for good? These are the facts to consider.

1998 – In 1998, there was a demise of one of the founder member. As a result, Estee Lauder became the sole owner of MAC.
MAC holds its position among top 3 makeup brands in world ranking. MAC has collaborated with several huge artists. For instance, Sia, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, & Elle Goulding.
What MAC Says about their Cruelty Free Outlook?
Here’s something interesting from MAC’s official website. It is under the tag of ‘Working Toward a Cruelty-free World”.
“M·A·C does not test on animals. We do not own any animal testing facilities and we never ask others to test on animals for us. While some governments conduct animal testing to prove safety before they will allow us to sell our products, M·A·C has never tested on animals and we continue to be a leader in the movement to end animal testing globally. To this end, we are proud to partner with IIVS (INSTITUTE FOR IN VITRO SCIENCES) to expand the use and acceptance of non-animal testing methods worldwide.”
This is the same old ambiguous statement. You can find it in every subsidiary of non-cruelty free Estee Lauder conglomerate.
The statement tries to convince you how animal-friendly MAC’s policies are. Sadly, the mention of exception breaks all the illusions MAC was trying to create.
Moreover, they do not share clear data about their ingredient testing policy. The above statement does not confirm how the suppliers treat the product ingredients.
PS: In cosmetic industry, animal testing is majorly performed at the ingredients level, not in the complete product level. Here is a detailed Cruelty Free Guide.
Cruelty free timeline
MAC used to be a biggest promoter of cruelty-free in cosmetic industry. They used to promote their products as ‘tested on models not on animals’.
But then the merger of MAC with Estee Lauder occured. (tragic!) As a result, this brought a huge change in their original policies.
Hence, MAC broke all their ethics promises towards their loyal cruelty-free consumers. And guess what?
2005 –MAC got launched in China in 2005.
They even brought changes in their testing policy. All done to entertain the mandatory animal testing practices by Chinese government.
2012 – In 2012, it was disclosed that MAC runs animal testing on their own. This news created lots of buzz among the users and beauty community.
There were urges and protests by various animal welfare organisations. For example, PETA’s youth chapter. However, MAC did not budge. No changes in any of its policies.
Is MAC Cruelty Free?
No. Nope. Nada. Nah. MAC is not a cruelty-free brand.
Tumblr media
In fact, MAC’s parent brand is also an animal cruelty brand.
2005 – MAC used to be a cruelty free brand until 2005. In 2005 MAC started selling their products in mainland China.
Currently, they are in compliance to Chinese policies. Accordingly, all imported products have to go through mandatory animal testing step. This is the cosmetic product safety guideline over there.
2012 – MAC chose monetary gain over customer loyalty & animal welfare. Additionally, they started animal testing on their own since 2012.
Till this date, MAC funds the Chinese government to run cruelty test on their products.
Gluten Free Foundation Brands
Is MAC manufactured in China?
Not known. Majority of MAC’s color products are manufactured in US and Canada. Not adequate information is available to tell if MAC makes products in mainland China or not.
Is MAC currently being sold in China?
Yes. MAC has several standalone stores in China. Also, they sell their products through their own China website & Sephora.
MAC products are widely available both online and offline in mainland China. In fact, China is currently one of the major consumers of MAC.
Is it vegan?
No. MAC products are definitely not vegan.
MAC uses animal derived ingredients like carmine and beeswax to make their world famous makeup range.
Do we recommend MAC?
Not at all.
Sorry folks! We can’t recommend a shady brand like MAC.
MAC is neither cruelty free nor vegan. They aren’t even clean & green. Just like many other non-cruelty free brands MAC tries fool customers. They market their products as ‘never tested’ on animals.
On contrary, they allow and obviously ‘pay’ governing bodies to perform animal testing on their products.
PETA has even included MAC in their ‘brands to avoid’ list for this contrasting duality.
Alternatives to 5 Highly Recommended Products from MAC
Here are some cruelty free dupes of MAC.

You saw this one coming. Obviously! This is one of the bestseller worldwide. A beautiful red lipstick with ultra matte finish. This blue toned red color never goes wrong with anyone. Perhaps the reason why so many celebrities swear by it?
The best cruelty free dupe of Ruby Woo is Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip in Creeper. Affordable & cruelty free, give me one please! (I am on a lookout for a better dupe though!)

Beauty on a Budget
As a University student and baby lawyer (aka legal clerk) I know what it's like to not have a big budget, but still want to look your best. Personally, here are little tricks and tools I've discovered through the years.
Start with your whole body. More fruit, lean proteins, and veggies, less processed food. It is honestly the best thing for your skin, energy levels, and your body overall. On top of that, throw some walks in and drink your water--both of which are free. Start with a good foundation, and you will spend less on beauty products to begin with. In addition, you will save time and money at the doctor's office, too.
Cetaphil and baby shampoo are the most underappreciated products ever. Seriously! Baby shampoo is gentle and will not dry out your hair, leaving it with that straw-like feel, but leave it soft and shiny. Same for cetaphil, but with your skin; your skin does a pretty good job of cleaning itself. It just needs a gentle cleanser (aside from cystic acne or other serious medical problems, ofc. Talk to your doctor.) To get the job done. Cetaphil moisturizer comes in a giant bulk bottle and one half pump will do the trick. It's a great value.
Coconut oil. In my experience, this stuff is all purpose and comes in a bulk tub for around 10 bucks. You can use it on the ends of your hair to fix breakage and split ends, which is how I use it, or my boyfriend has used it to soften up bumpy, dry, damaged patches on his arms. In addition, it's a great anti-fungal, so if you have a problem with dandruff or build up, coconut oil has your back. Just heat it up, apply to dry or wet hair, leave it in for as long as you can, and wash your hair. Or heat between your fingers and apply to the ends of your hair while it's drying to fix breakage. We've even used it as lube (do not use with latex condoms).
Drug Store Make-up. I don't care what YouTube gurus say, some of this s*** is good s***. Maybelline's FitMe powder and foundation is seriously amazing and finishes as smooth as prestige products. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, try physicians formula, or stick with prestige. Maybelline Falsies mascara (the one in the pink bottle) is amazing, too. Cherubs will kiss your eyelashes. For lipsticks, Revlon is pretty solid, and has like, millions of colours. If you wanna be extra fancy and get falsies, you can buy a pack of 5 or 6 pretty cheap at the grocery store, too. For makeup removal, stick with a hot washcloth and elbow grease, then cleanse. No need to waste money on wipes that are really harsh on your skin. Like I said, your skin can take care of itself p well.
Those 99 cent lil hair mask packets are p nifty tbh. Especially anything with argan oil or coconut oil 👌👌
Annnddd that's all I can think of atm, but there are of course tons more tips out there.
***edit: a lovely soul reminded me that baby oil is a great tool for removing makeup such as stubborn mattes if elbow grease isn't doing the trick. @adulting-isnt-easy****
