TAMN Outline

Since we're so close to the end of TAMN, I just wanted to share what Lock and my outline looks like, especially because neither of us ever used outlines for writing fic before this LOL

The only reason we have one for TAMN is because we were determined to finish this thing within a year of starting it and really wanted to post a chapter a week. Realistically, between work and irl and different timezones, there was no WAY we'd be able to keep up with a weekly posting schedule OR our self-imposed deadline if we were writing on the fly, so an outline was a good way to keep us on track.

SO FIRST OF ALL. We have quick chapter markers to refer to just to keep track of where we're at. The obvious ones are as follows:

🐈 Scar POV Chapters 🦜 Grian POV Chapters 🧟‍♂️ Some sort of significant zombie encounter that chapter 💦 Smut

I took this screenshot a WHILE back so Chapter 12 was actually split into 2 chapters, as was Chapter 14. So while the two emojis in Chapter 14 were meant to signify both Scar and Grian's POVs in that chapter, we ultimately just split it into a separate Scar chapter and a separate Grian chapter.

As for the other markers, this is what they mean at a glance:

The last one isn't in the screenshot above, but is another one we use. And, ofc, if it doesn't have any of those markers beside it, it means the chapter hasn't been written yet.

Other than that, every chapter heading has not only the chapter number, but a reminder of where Scarian are, the time of day that chapter starts at, and how long of a walk/drive to their next destination remains. Plus, the very first point is always the current date and the weather (in Celsius 🍁) for the day. It looks something like this:

For a short chapter like Ch. 6 where not too much happens, the outline is just a handful of points. Also, we put a strike through things we skipped as we wrote when we felt they no longer fit the mood we were going for. (Basically, the outline is here as a guide and we adjust as needed for full creative freedom.)

Now the LINKS at the bottom lead to ANOTHER document where Lock and I's original conversations are sorted, in case we need to reference back to something we don't remember. That looks like something like this:

So when you click the link, there's a pop up that will take you directly to the original conversation about it located in another doc.

Basically, Lock and I had talked about TAMN for months before every writing it, so when I suggested making an outline, Lock was like "yeah, we basically have a skeleton already with how much we've talked about it". So what we did was, I copy-pasted EVERY conversation we had about TAMN into a Google Doc, and then Lock went through and SUMMARISED EVERYTHING in each conversation into The Main Points. After that, I went and put them into chronological order in a new doc which then became the outline we use today! 💫

Thus, when you click on a link from the outline, you get taken to the conversation summary, and if you scroll down past the summary you get to the actual conversation itself, minus our usernames/formatting/timestamps to make it easier to read at a glance:

And then, ofc, the further along we got in the fic, the more complicated the plot and the chapters got. So instead of short and sweet outlines with a link or two to old conversations, we had to come up with a lot of in between events that still somehow added to the plot and moved the story along to the main points we wanted to hit.

This was actually what took me the longest during outlining, and poor Lock kept going "JUST LEAVE IT BLANK, WE'LL FIGURE IT OUT AS WE GO" but I really wanted to have SOMETHING down just to give us a springboard to launch off of, because we had no idea if we'd have time WHILE writing to come up with anything.

(This continues on for more pages since we combined two chapters into one here, but this is the gist of what the outlines turned into per chapter as we got later and later in the fic LOL)

Turned out to be the right call, because it's saved our asses more than once when on a time-crunch! That said, there were a couple chapters where we DID in fact go "idk about what's in the outline, what if we do this instead?" and then do that because it Felt Right. So again, the outline was super helpful but not a hard and fast rule. (Though Lock and I had our fair share of "WHY DIDN'T YOU WRITE WHAT WAS IN THE OUTLINE"/"I FORGOR" moments that have been fun every step of the way 😂)

AAAND, I THINK THAT'S IT! THAT'S OUR OUTLINE! 🎉

Just wanted to make a post for it to document because it was such a novel experience, hahaha! Like I said earlier, neither Lock nor I ever used outlines before, even when writing fics together for other fandoms :')

I've got two completed longfics under my belt from before TAMN in my last fandom and I wrote those completely on the fly as well. Worked out just fine, but like. It took me 2-4 YEARS to finish the fics, and they were both MUCH shorter than TAMN is. 😅 Nothing wrong with that obviously, but it was a lot of fun to try something new and it felt incredible to be able to have a new chapter ready to go each week! ;w; 💜

We're almost done writing the fic and honestly idk what we're gonna do with all this free time once we've wrapped it up... time to come up with a new longfic ig LMAO

Like. Im gonna try drafting the post from the computer (instead of the mobile browser. Because the mobile APP just doesnt have any option for html at all lmao i hate the new web so so so so so fucking MUCH!) Are you surprised about any of these lists?

by the most kudos list, not really! I think it's just about the same list as it was last year -- most of those fics were published in 2020 in the height of the last season of agents of shield, so there was a lot of fic being consumed them. may's, while my baby, has also been running for four years, so there's definitely something to be said about accumulating kudos, LOL.

by the least kudos list, not really, although i'm a little sad to see some of them on there. i'm a really big fan of i never meant to be the one and i fall in love with you, especially the latter because i am absolutely screaming about a whole kid jola au

What’s a favorite fic you published this year?

that's a tough one, because i have favorites for different reasons! i have favorite longer shots, favorite angsts, and favorite drabbles. i think at the end of it all, it's probably scuttlebutt squad because of the humor, the dual pov, and just. it's very sapphic. and of course, the group chat format is one i get down with all the time.

How do you feel like you’ve improved as a writer this year?

there's a lot more sapphism in this year than there has been in previous years, first of all. but I think I've really learned how to write in the present tense this year, because there's something about star trek: discovery fics that calls for it? and that odd half-formal tone that comes with writing its characters while they're on duty. as someone who started the year not even thinking she'd venture into star trek, i feel like that's the biggest learning curve I mastered :)

What is something new you did writing-wise in the past year? (new fandom, pairing, setting, genre, collab, etc)

*looks at the 16 keyla detmer/joann owosekun fics I published last year alone* idk it's kind of hard to tell

but it's really writing for star trek: discovery! as someone who started 2021 with a foot halfway out of the fandom/writing fanfic door i'm happy to report i'm lost in the sauce now...again. it's been a challenge, learning to write for a whole new type of universe, but I like to think I'm doing well, LOL.

1) How many works do you have on AO3? only 3 at the moment! 

2) What’s your total AO3 word count? 45238 as of today 

3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? just never have i ever! although i’m sure there are a few unfinished, never-published, years-old stories from assorted fandoms from when I was younger floating around in the void somewhere

4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

haha well I’ve only got 3 published, but the number one spot goes to vanilla ice cream, which makes sense since it’s the only one i’ve actually finished so far 🙈

5) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

none of them? i feel like the reason i often read fic is because there is some unresolved canon-angst that i want someone else to resolve so while i definitely have points of tension, all of my stories tend to end (or are planned to end) happy  

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

i think vanilla ice cream will still probably be the fluffiest bc of that epilogue i decided to write last minute, even once i finish all the others. but they’re all pretty happy 🥰

7) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

not so far, though i try to make it a habit to never say never. I think its one of those things that’s really difficult to write well and I’m just not sure it’s in my skillset to do so. but who knows? maybe one day! 

8) Do you write smut? If so what kind?

see above haha. it’s pretty much the exact same answer :) 

9) Do you respond to comments, why or why not? 

I really try to answer all of them, although I know I missed a bunch while I was on a sorta unplanned writing hiatus. It’s only been a year of me posting anything I’ve written and it still genuinely baffles me that people not only read but also enjoy the things I put out there into the world, so every “thank you for reading” is from the heart for me and it’s so worth taking the two seconds to make my appreciation known. 

10. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

no, thankfully! i think part of that is just i haven’t been around that long haha

11) Have you ever had a fic stolen?

i don’t... think so? 

12) Have you ever had a fic translated?

no but how cool is that? i wasn’t even really aware that was a thing that could happen! 

13) Have you ever co-written a fic before?

no! but if anyone wants to feel free to hmu 👀 i am super busy rn but i would love to eventually cuz so many of the folks who write for this show are so talented

14) What’s your all time favorite ship?

oh gosh. all time is really, really hard. obvi for NHIE i’ve fully boarded the ben/devi train, but some other all time TV faves of mine are ben/leslie from parks&rec, david/patrick from schitts creek, and josh/donna from the west wing. you might be able to tell i love a rivals to lovers moment from some of these lol 💀 but there are so many that i love for different reasons it’s like picking a favorite child lmao

15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I do have plans to finish the 2 remaining fics up on ao3, but I will admit, the rosy dot over the i of loving was... ambitious, and not exactly well thought out when I started it. so it may be a while. i haven’t started much else new since those 3 went up, since i’ve been trying to finish what i’ve started. but i have had this ben/devi idea rattling around in my brain ever since i read the book “the unhoneymooners” that I am just not sure i’ll ever quite get around to. 

16) What are your writing strengths?

i like to think i’m pretty good at writing dialogue! in college, i took a creative writing class for playwriting, where it was drilled into our head that you want to get as much of the story as humanly possible out through words, rather than actions. basically my professors argument was that any stage direction could be ignored by a director if the action/object/setting/etc. wasn’t directly referred to in lines said by a character. so if it was important to you, we should make someone talk about it! i think because of that my narration tends to be a little sparser (but hopefully that’s to the benefit of the dialogue!!)

oh, and i also took a class in humor writing and got an A, so.... 👀

17) What are your writing weaknesses?

i think i could be a lot better at coming up with themes/symbols/metaphors/etc. Having not really planned out the WIPs on AO3 now, this was hard to do, so I guess that also goes hand in hand with my time management haha. But yeah I find it a little difficult to have those sorts of literary devices in longer works (i used to write a lot more poetry and it was a little easier for me in that format so i have faith that i can get better).

18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

i only fluently speak english and you do not want to see me butcher french or german, let alone a language I’ve never taken courses in. so it’s a hard no for me personally haha. that said if you know more than another language, first of all i’m jealous, and second of all, go for it! 

19) What was the first fandom you wrote for?

i don’t really know! like i said i used to write things without publishing them anywhere, so it’s hard to remember. maybe harry potter, when I was like 10? i feel like i probably wrote the same self-insert hogwarts moment that literally every 10 year old in the late-aughts was writing haha

i know for sure there was a b99 fic that was almost published on ao3 back in like season 2 or 3? that’s why my username is what it is 😊

20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

i’m really proud of finishing vanilla ice cream. buuuut i am also really proud of the poems in the rosy dot over the i of loving and i think if i ever finish that one, it will be my favorite for pushing me out of my writing comfort zone.

Random NiGHTS Ideas/Headcanons #1

My goal is to have an ongoing series of these where I just post my random thoughts, inner ramblings, etc. Also, a lot of these relate to how I write about this series. So... some world building things will be here as well. Anyways let’s begin :)

- The Night Dimension is like... it’s own pocket of existence within the universe. I think of it similar to Greek Mythology, where it’s part of the world, and it’s just not seen often. When someone is visiting the Night Dimension, it’s almost like an out-of-body experience where their soul is present, but not the physical form. Which can explain why it would feel particularly real to that person. I’d like to imagine it is easier to explain everything as a dream than it would be to say ‘your soul has left your body to universe hop, you get it?’. Now... as to why it reflects a person within each Nightopia and such. I haven’t entirely figured it out yet... but I’ve been figuring it as that the universe has the ability to morph to how you wish to see it, or really how your mind is perceiving it to be. (convoluted, I know). It has the potential to be a paradise you can escape to for a while, but it can also reveal things about yourself, and even possibly help you figure out problems, or even resolve them internally. (almost like ‘Wonderland’ from ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’)

- Ideya are representations of aspects of the human soul, therefore I started associating them with pieces of the soul rather than just an energy. If you gain a full set, it can technically mean you are at balance with yourself, and are at your strongest. Lose enough ideya, and you’ll fall into a very low point, similar to a depression, or even lose all sense of humility. I’ve also played around with the idea that humans have the ability to give them away, or steal them from others. Another idea I've tossed around is that ideya can become corrupted, leading to some traits turning toxic (example: Purity turns into Immorality. It’s the easiest to corrupt as well, with Courage being the hardest). Why is Courage so hard for Wizeman to obtain? It’s the only one that he cannot grasp himself, nor can many of his maren (besides NiGHTS and possibly Reala) touch it. I’ve always chalked it up to the fact none of them have the actual courage to really pursue it, with the only exception being again, NiGHTS and Reala. Wizeman rules with fear, and is a tyrannic, ruthless, omnipotent, and omniscient entity. When you have so many things to hide behind, you never really gain any courage. And since Wizeman has shown those who disobey his order receive severe punishments, courage to do risky actions wouldn’t be common amongst nightmaren, who are too afraid of the consequences to do so. Without the will to have courage, it will not find you. 

- Now for some stuff that isn’t purely world building, and more just ideas I've gone back and forth with. What if there were people who sided with Wizeman? What if there was a cult surrounding those who follow him? Like, just imagine a cult for Wizeman within the human race. This entire idea only got brought to mind when a friend of mine started talking about weird cults, and I went ‘huh... cult of the six handed god’. I haven’t entirely fleshed out the concept yet, but I would like to imagine it would be similar to the Yiga Clan from Breath of the Wild... just actually dangerous. And possibly known for using psychology against willing/unwilling victims. And there might be sacrifices, but that’s as far as I got. Wouldn’t it be really interesting if the maren actually took note of this so called cult, and then told Wizeman, and he humored the cultists because it’s a group worshipping him? 

- I managed to find some raws of the Archie comic, and gagged......... Okay, memes and horrible story/art aside, there were some concepts that I liked. Like how the ruby on NiGHTS’s chest was actually a shard of courage, or how they could essentially exist on earth for short periods of time. But the one I liked most was how nightmaren could ‘dualize’ with humans and pretty much possess them. And then use the human as an outlet for their agenda. I once wrote something using that concept, except instead of spreading the good news about Wizeman and how he’ll save you, the nightmaren used it as a way to spy on targets while they weren’t actively in the night dimension. And it could be anyone close to the target such as a parent, friend, teacher, or even someone who often passes you in public. 

I think I’m done rambling for now lmao

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

I consumed half a jar of nutella while writing this rip

This fic uses two prompts (thanks!); social media from @thinkoutsidethelovesquare​ is the main focus, while @queermiraculous​‘ prompt discovery rounds it all off ~

The formatting should be pretty clear? but bold represents a screen name. I’ve also used some emojis because it’s social media and I dig that, so hopefully that shows up?

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words- a Chlonette fic (1347 words)

Alya had been pestering Marinette to get on Instagram for months now, and Marinette's will had finally caved. She didn't know how long she would maintain the account, but it certainly didn't hurt to try it out.

Picking a username was the difficult part. After much thought, she settled on marinettemakes, because if there was anything she wanted to do with this account, it would be to share her designs (besides, alliteration was always cute). For her username, she chose a photo of herself that her parents had taken on her last birthday; warm light, her face tilted up towards the camera, a smile stretched across her face. For her first post, she couldn't decide, so she started by seeing which of her classmates had accounts of their own.

Alya's was full of shots of her friends and some of her work or her food, captioned with class conspiracies - and her feed bore remarkable similarities to Nino's, which raised interesting questions about their alleged non-relationship. More interesting yet was their choice to use their akumatised names, ladywifi and bubbler, for their accounts. Juleka's profile didn't have a single selfie, instead turning her camera towards the world around her, but Rose's made up for this with lots of candids of her friend among the dogs she had met in the parks of Paris. Ivan ran an edgy, monochrome account, from which pictures of his girlfriend radiated. Kim's was upbeat, chronicling his morning runs and deadlift records, and the great stacks of foods he shared with his friends. It seemed Alix was trying to outdo him in showing off, because she showed similar images in between those of her freestyling in skate parks. Max had an account only to like the posts of his friends. Adrien's Instagram seemed to be run by his management; behind the scenes of his latest shoot, grateful shout-outs and promotions for the brands that hired him. He had by far the greatest follower count for the class.

It was really interesting to see the images her classmates curated for themselves, but Nathaniel's was closest to what she thought she envisioned for herself. Seeing his profile full of his doodles, comic scraps, and completed pieces reassured her that it wasn't unusual to have an account dedicated to your work. So, tentatively, she posted a photo of a circle skirt she had made, accessorised with a pair of cute socks and thick-soled shoes.

She was surprised how quickly the feedback came in:

And a new follow request! chloebourgeois had requested to follow her, which wasn't surprising - though Chloé hated her and was not interested in anything other than herself, she could hardly afford to let someone slip under her radar of data and derision. Marinette shrugged, and accepted the request, following her classmate in return and absently looking through the pictures Chloé had decided to post.

chloebourgeois uploaded mostly selfies; neck a beautiful arch, lips a slight pout to emphasise their shape, make up always perfect. Her trademark look was that frosted lip with long eyelashes and a small flick of eyeliner, but this profile showed her versatility, and had gained her a lot of followers as a fledgling beauty guru. In awe, Marinette scrolled down. Chloé with dark red lips. Chloé with a bronzed contour. Chloé in nude. (The words were unfortunate. This set up a new image that had to be rapidly discarded for her own safety.)

She had just uploaded a new photo: Chloé on the balcony of her father's hotel in the early bloom of the sunset, face in blissful profile, golden light kissing her golden skin and hair, hands skimming her collarbones to display their beautiful shape.

And in the same moment, chloebourgeois left a comment on her photo: wow 👌

Chloé did not like many people's pictures, let alone leave comments on them. This was something Alya picked up on after she had left comments (flattering ones!) on three different pictures in a row: "Is there something going on between you and Chloé that you didn't tell me about? I thought you hated each other."

"I'm pretty sure we still do," Marinette mused, and meant it.

"Hmm."

Yet, this apparent thaw in their relationship was from both ends. Marinette had liked selfies of Chloé tossing her ponytail over her shoulder (marinettemakes: Your hair is so pretty!), nursing a cup of coffee with slightly bleary eyes (marinettemakes: You woke up like this? Amazing x), showing off a cute Ladybug hoodie she had bought (marinettemakes: Almost as cute as the real thing :) ) and painting on a shimmery smoky eye (marinettemakes: How do you do this? This is stunning!)... and pretty much everything else she had ever posted.

"I'm just being nice, Alya. Chloé's a narcissist. I don't know, I guess we might get along better if I compliment her loads, and it's way easier complimenting her from far away rather than to her face. I get intimidated and chicken out."

"Why? Because she's hot and you can't keep your cool?"

Alya said it like a joke, but Marinette replied to it like a reality, "N-no! I mean, like, she's obviously hot, aesthetically-pleasing, whatever, but that isn't important. It's not that."

"Hmm."

"Besides!" she floundered, "If she's being nice to me, it's because she's figured out she can get something out of me."

Comments on marinettemakes left by chloebourgeois: 'above average xx' (a cosy knitted jumper), 'my favourite babe! <3' (a tea dress inspired by Chat Noir), three fire emojis in a row (a dress that came out shorter than intended, drawing the eye down to her thighs), a cheeky 'girls in suits? UGH' (a suit jacket that Alya had convinced her friend to wear with a nude illusion beneath), 'pretty, but what does it look like on the designer?' (a sketch of a summery dress with ruffles and layers of volume).

Alya had stubbornly called this flirting ('She's gay, boo.' 'No way. She's obsessed with Adrien.' 'Fine! She's bi, boo.'), but Marinette did not feel like Chloé had changed her attitude outside of leaving flirty comments on her pictures - and Alya did that too, so it didn't mean anything. Indeed, all it had culminated in was a DM saying 'hey so daddy's got a charity gala and I've run out of things to wear, so I want you to design me something. gold would be nice', and a picture of Chloé on the arm of a famous human rights lawyer, dressed in lamé and looking like a Grecian goddess, with tendrils of beautiful curling hair escaping the coil atop her head to caress her cheeks (marinettemakes: Beyond gorgeous!). She had not even given a credit to the designer, and the designer did not feel it her place to say.

This was Marinette's explanation. However, the comments on Marinette's few selfies (pretty!, hooot x, ur like an angel) said something else entirely.

And, well, a picture is worth a thousand words.

ladywifi posted a new picture: a selfie with Nino, hand making a peace sign. 'school dance babes!' reads the caption, 'and there certainly were some babes tonight'

marinettemakes posted a new picture: a group photo of her four friends, arms draped over each other's shoulders. It's a lovely candid shot, Adrien laughing at something Nino says to him, Marinette's attention directed somewhere beyond the shot (you can almost see it on her face: holy...). 'Had a really great night!' she says, and means it.

chloebourgeois posted a new picture: a selfie taken from slightly above to give the best vantage of her cleavage in the revealing evening gown, and the dark plum lips (a new colour for her). At this angle, you can see the fingertips of the hand around her waist, and the slight blurring of her lipstick. 'you should've see me on the dancefloor 😉'

And, if you know where to look, you can. In the background of ladywifi's latest picture, somewhere in the dark of the dancefloor, you might discover Marinette Dupain-Cheng kissing Chloé Bourgeois, who she has been staring hungrily at since she first walked in the door - and plum is exactly what will quench her appetite.

Not in the photo, however, is the moment they pull away and say exactly what's on their mind: "Wow..."

Okay let’s see… I’m gonna be totally straight with you guys and tell you them all despite how utterly embarassing some may be

I’ve been in a lot of fandoms a little bit for all my life, but I’ve only really deeply been in a few? Despite how much content I make of Livmiles, I’m not too huge of a shipper, especially when I was younger it was rare for me to latch onto a couple and actually ship them, but these are the few I can remember for sure.

OCxCanon with Meta Knight from Kirby (I was like 12 give me a break)

14. Go on, who are your BroTPs?

Idk if I have a lot of BroTPs? As you may know (once again, especially with my Livmiles content) I’m very big on strong emotional connections in character relationships so while I love a lot of the friendships I see in shows, I never really consider them BroTPs specifically? I like EdLing (and I’ve seen some cute fanart that makes me kinda on the edge of shipping it even tho I like EdWin as well) as a BroTP, and I haven’t seen anyone ship is specifically, but Scar/Miles would be a nice one too since they have a lot of common things to become good friends over, you know?

I’m trying to think of things other than in FMA but I’m having a difficult time rn haha, this is my main fandom so it’s easier for me to find things in this one

Kinda Livmiles? The thought never even occurred to me until I saw one piece of fanart like four or five years ago

Writing summaries haha, I’m usually pretty quick to come up with titles uwu

I feel like I can do a really good job of putting strong emotion in my writing, whether its romantic, suspense, etc (I only say this bc I wrote a horror thing a few years ago and for some reason even though I was young and it was meh, people were commenting that it actually really spooked them)

40. What do you struggle the most with in your writing?

Sometimes, I’ll really get into a groove and I’ll just write and write and go off on a tangent, and if I don’t proofread and edit, it’ll make like zero sense later x’D

47. Archive Of Our Own, Fanfiction.net or Tumblr - where do you prefer to post and why?

I’m new to Ao3 but I really enjoy the format a lot! The only thing I ask of it is more something I want from readers and fellow writers, which is just more feedback. I’m not just being greedy about my own work, haha, almost everyone I know agrees. I’m guilty of it too though– so please, if you’re reading anything and you enjoy it, at least leave a kudos. It only takes a second and it means the world to the writer. 

Other than that, I used to be on ff.net but I moved to Ao3 and I’m so glad I did. I still post TNT chapters there because there’s one person who’s been following it since I started it in 2014, and even after my hiatus they’re still commenting xD after it ends I’ll fully move to Ao3 though.
