Ruben Dias x Reader - Not Ready Part 8/12
18+
Part 9 and Part 10 are out on my Patreon!
Readers sister dies in a tragic car accident, leaving reader and her boyfriend Ruben in the urgent custody of her niece and nephew. Readers' life is suddenly flipped upside-down since having children hadn't been the plan for her and Ruben's life together. At least not now, when his football career was reaching great new heights.
Enjoy! 💞
Ruben's parents were coming all the way from Portugal to visit you this week. It would be their first time meeting Emmy and Vale and it was safe to say that you were a nervous wreck.
Ruben was also a nervous wreck, but for other reasons entirely. He recently suggested that the two of you needed to hire a housekeeper to clean up his apartment, and to handle the cooking....and grocery shopping. And if they were willing — the entertainment of the children.
"So, a nanny basically?"
"Not a nanny." Ruben argued, hearing the irritation in your voice. A pause. "Okay a nanny."
"Why would we hire a nanny, Ruben? I can't believe that you would even suggest that."
"Look around Y/N." You stood in the middle of the living room. A war zone to any visitor. A real mess. Toys scattered everywhere on the floor, drawings taped to the walls, and slime....hidden in every corner of the room, only the smell of aftershave revealing exactly where.
"It's a zoo, Y/N. I'm living in a zoo." Ruben's outstretched arms fall hopelessly to his sides. "I've gotten rid of the expensive paintings, the fragile sculptures and vases. Hell, I've even put away most of my throphy's. Still your kids will find something of mine to break. I can't take it anymore. We can't live like this."
"My kids....?" You felt the ripple in your heart.
"Yeah?" Ruben's eyebrows furrowed, your hurt expression stunning him.
"So whenever they break something or make a mess they're suddenly my kids? My responsibility alone?"
"Y/N, you know that's not what I—"
You turned your back on him, hiding your face.
"Hey, baby don't—"
Behind your back you heard Ruben shuffle through the mess. Soon his arms wrapped around you, sweeping you into the warmth of his torso, cradling you in his arms.
"You know that's not what I meant." Ruben whispered, his lips brushing softly against the lobe of your ear. He pressed kisses against your skin, tracing them down the slope of your neck. "They're also my kids." He muttered. "Our kids."
A sighed as you slumped against him, your head falling back on Ruben's shoulder. He continued nibbling on your neck, his hands busy with the buttons on your knitted sweater, sliding it off your shoulders to reveal that you were naked underneath it.
"Wow." He breathed, a silent prayer of gratitude that Emmy and Vale had just been dropped off at school. Iker was still present, but his playful growl was heard somewhere in the kitchen.
"Bedroom?" Ruben suggested.
"Bedroom." You nodded.
Ruben did not hesitate to gather you in his arms and carry you there. Your legs wrapped around his waist, your hands raking through his thick hair while you kissed him open mouthed. He fought to get you to the bedroom, throwing you on the bed once he did. The sight of your bouncing breast arched his brow.
"Like what you see?" You grinned, playfully pinching your nipples while he watched you from above.
"Don't." He grunted, a warning. "No touching yourself unless I say so."
"Yes, sir."
He grinned, loving the fact that you were willing to play along. It wasn't often that he got to have you like this. Just the two of you naked, bodies pressed hard against one another. With Ruben's parents coming this week there would be more of you to look after Emmy and Vale. More time for you and Ruben to—
"Stop thinking."
You gasped as Ruben's knee forced your legs to spread as he dipped it into the mattress.
"Focus on me." He demanded, voice murky and seductive.
You nodded slowly.
"Good. Now...where do you want my mouth."
You smiled. "On my pussy."
Ruben chuckled. "Trust me, I'll get to that. But your breast...." He dipped his chin, his hands pressing down on each side of you. "They're so edible. " He reached out a hand to squeeze your flesh, arching your back in the process of bringing your nipples into his mouth. He shifted between them both, like a kid with two popsicles.
While you moaned and groaned beneath him you felt the bulge in his pants grow stiff against your thigh. "Ruben please."
He hymns in response, warm saliva watering his mouth as he keeps suckling you for pleasure.
"Please Ruben, I need you to touch me."
He paused, pulling his head back from your chest. "Like this?" He said, knuckles tracing down your belly, stopping at the hem of your sweatpants. He found the right spot on the hill of your pelvis, drawing small circles over the soft fabric with his thumb. His finger moved until a wet patch revealed how desperately you wanted him, how this act alone could make you explode.
"Be patient baby, I'll get the condoms." Ruben stood and you whimpered with the absence of his touch.
He chuckled but made his way towards the bathroom. You fell back on the bed to the sound of cabinets and drawers being pulled open. Ruben returned with no rubber in sight. "No luck, we're out of condoms."
"Baby." You squealed, your thighs rubbing together just to keep the fire within you alive.
"Fuck." Ruben ground and made his way over to you anyway. He climbed the bed to sit on top of you and pulled your sweats and panties down your legs in one go. What was revealed to him was a swollen bead, sensitive to touch, but pulsating for his touch.
"God, Y/N. You're this wet for me?" Ruben looked down on you in wonder, his cock fully sprouted below his shorts.
"Yes, Ruben. Do something, touch me, tease me. With or without a condom, I don't care."
You really didn't. And for the first time it seemed like Ruben didn't either. He pulled his pants down to reveal his cock, rock hard in the grip of his hand. He aligned himself with your entrance as you spread wide before him. He bent down and kissed you before slowly easing himself into the warmth of you.
"Shit." He groaned. A deep growl extracted from his chest that pressed hard against your own.
Daylight slipped through the bedroom windows revealing the amazement in his eyes and the pure admiration Ruben had for your body.
He was looking down at where the two of you were joined. As his hips thrusted against your ass he watched the wave of your flesh as you took him into you raw.
You raised one leg to rest over his shoulder. Ruben's hand closed around it to keep you steady while he pumped in and out of you like a wild animal, rattling the bed in the process.
Once the hits got too hot for him to bear he bent down, slowing himself down by raising your chin and pressing soft kisses against your lips. They were soft but sloppy, Ruben's tongue tasting yours in a sacred dance of your mouths.
"Fuck I'm....."
Eventually something twitched below. Ruben's body trembled with every twitch and so did yours. On the verge of him pulling out his cock, you whimpered. "No." Ruben's eyes widened. You wanted him, all of him even if it meant another level taken in your relationship.
To your satisfaction Ruben did not fight you, instead with his last efforts he rode the wave with you. Your orgasms followed closely behind one another before your bodies went slack.
"That was...."
You nodded, your chest heaving up and down as you fought to catch your breath. Ruben rolled onto his back but pulled you to lay against him. He removed the damped hair from your temple and kissed your nose and then your lips. "You're so beautiful like this."
"You mean sweaty and naked?" You smiled.
"Yes, just like this, sweaty and naked."
Ruben held your chin, not sparing you a breath as he repeatedly brought your lips to his mouth. He kissed you as if you tasted vanilla ice cream and he just couldn't get enough licks as you melted in his arms.

My mum ran into my room to tell me a news article about Max Verstappen and it's the funniest fucking thing
Basically max went on a racing trip in Portugal with friends and family and they all hired luxury sports cars to race on a track they'd hired. But when they got there max wasn't allowed to hire the car he wanted because the company's insurance can't let anyone under 30 to drive a car with that much power. The company has responded and pretty much went " were really sorry, we know you can drive that kind of car we didn't know what to do🫤"
#i think max would have been over it pretty quick tbh#i feel like hes also gonna tell this story alot. its very much somthing he'd laugh at#max verstappen#f1#formula 1#mv33#mv1

Muse: Adelaide
"Enjoy your vacation"
That's what the memo Edward had telegraphed. Made her waste all the effort leaving her hotel to the location, paying for the message. Just to remind her to enjoy her vacation. A planned vacation in Portugal because he got a rumor that an old "associate" was now living here. She was to make sure it was in fact the same man who conned him out of millions of dollars. Then if it was to kill him with a certain gun.
A week and a half ago, he came to visit while she was still packing. The arrogance of the man, her employer, who killed her mother out of sheer jealousy. Still flaunted that he will always have leverage over her. Her emotions will always be mixed when it comes to him. He calmly strutted over, making idol chit-chat before revealing the real reason. He presented a small weapon case. He opened it and found a gold-plated, ivory, handle revolver. It was well crafted and customized. Then the story began. He picked up the gun and examined it, his piercing blue eyes, apparently remenicing.
"Jaime Santiago and I were once friends. He came to me, in his usually over-confidante manner. He needed to borrow ten million to start up this business. The deal was to lend him ten million and he would repay me 20 million. This gun, was precious to him, that I did believe. He gave it to me as equity, a loan. As a businessman myself and a good friend, I gave him six years to repay the loan. Then six years passed and he didn't want to pay...then months passed. The same BS that his business wasn't quite making it..then a few months later I've come to realize he had split his business into three and altogether they were worth well over 300 million," he paused placing the gun back in its custom casing.
He then picked up a bullet, it too was gold and she noticed there was some sort of engravement on it. On all the bullets that lay in the case. "And he couldn't pay a measly twenty mill," he seethed, disappointed and disgust apparent. "So I hired a contract on him," he said simply putting back the bullet. "He ran, he hid. He's been hiding for about twelve years now," he finished. He paused as he stared at her. She stared back unflinching. He leaned in closer and whispered. "I don't care how you do it, as long as you use this gun and put these bullets threw his head," Edward noted.
Now she was in Ribeira at a bustling cafe at night. She sipped on a latte and kept her eyes on the newspaper. She looked like a rich local who frequented the area. She didn't know Portuguese, she was studying the language in the meantime. She had to admit the views were nice. However, the views were nice everywhere she went. Edward was part of the High Table, they traveled to all the best locations the world had to offer. Though this....was supposed to be a grace period, a vacation. Yet here she was spying on a man in his late 50s buying drinks for anyone who would lend him an ear.
She watched as Jamie Santiago started to stumble off. Apparently a bit tipsy, a bit done. She began to tail him. The city was alive at night, with people partying late. Though she knew sooner or later there would be an opportunity. She kept her distance until he turned down a small alleyway. Just big enough for a small car to pass through. She quickened her pace as she put her hand in her purse. The gun was already loaded with the bullets with vindicta engraved on them. Santiago stopped as he tripped over a small pothole. Adelaide smirked as she neared pulling out the gun out of her purse.

The funny thing about that teaser is that it just means Exact Time of Arrival, something commonly used throughout the world, those names are just people who worked with the group, and also it was (apparently) filmed in Portugal.
Kaixo anon!
Just in the Spanish state there are 24,000 people named Mikel, 82,000 named Eva, and 570,000 named María (leaving out double names like María José, María Luisa, etc); of course those are just the numbers for alive people.
And out of those 680,000 alive people and all the dead ones throughout history that also shared those names, that Twitter user KNOWS exactly which 3 people those names refer to with 100% accuracy.
Spanish Justice system should hire them to discover who M. Rajoy is, quite honestly.
I don't know whether ETA means Exact Time of Arrival, Estimated Time of Arrival, Eu Te Amo or Experience Tumblr Alone. I couldn't care less. But reading that there are actual people with such a high level of insanity that believe that a Basque name + somebody sometime traveling near Euskal Herria + a car driving down a deserted road = apology of ETA and ETA imagery is very very worrying.

18 for the end of year asks
18. A memorable meal this year. A massive bowl of clams! I had flown to Portugal and hired a car to drive around. Having navigated the steep mountains on the way to Odeceixe, a two hour drive from the airport, I drove to the beach and parked, then walked, travel sore and knackered from driving, down to the beach. The first restaurant I came to had outdoor seating so I collapsed at a table. Anything would have tasted amazing at that point. I sat looking at the beach eating clams and relishing being by the sea. Then I walked down to the sea, swam and then slept on the beach until I felt human again.

Day 45 Up the road to Coimbra
Today I checked out of the airbnb in Nazaré, drove the hire car back to Leiria and caught the Rede Expressos bus to Coimbra (about one hour north), home to one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in 1290. Coimbra used to be the capital of Portugal.
I'm staying in a lovely B&B (which I quickly worked out was near Estabelecimento Prisional de Coimbra, all the barbed wire and towers with guards gave it away). And I'm very grateful the woman who met me at the door called the owner/manager to carry my suitcase up two flights of stairs. I could have done it but I wasn't going to refuse his help, as later I got a work out carrying a large water and groceries up the hill, and I went to the gym (housed in a former bakery).
I hurriedly sorted myself out so I could go and explore. Two nights here (really only one full day) won't be enough. Aside from the university, there are lovely gardens to explore, Old Town, and there is the Contemporary Art Bienal (The Phantom of Liberty) but I think it's spread across many buildings. I have a walking tour tomorrow morning and then I'm hoping I can spend the afternoon wondering around the University. I've noticed the students wearing long black cloaks outside the campus. It's a tradition that started 500 years ago.
I missed a great photo of the ducks as I wasn't quick enough. I caught all three peering at themselves in the window for quite a while, so cute.

2023: Most important thing is family
First year I’ve felt a shift from my “forever young” lifestyle to realizing we are getting old. Our friends no longer join every big event. Both our grandmothers passed away earlier this year. We’ve also had some health problems we’ve had to manage. There’s more time spent at home with continued house maintenance and remodeling projects (and a little of relaxation when possible). I guess since we spend more time at home, we keep improving it. But overall, I’m like “what’s going on? Are we boring? Oh, we are just getting older”, blah.
The biggest focus this year has been family. Between birthdays, funerals, national holidays, and newborn family member, we traveled 8 times in the year to spend time with family. With all the life changes, I cherish the time I spend with our family.
Workwise, this year I hired three new people for my team, and it was the first time in 5 years working at Barr Engineering that I felt the workload was finally manageable. All those years of stress finally paid off; I have a solid team, way more money (ha!) and Barr did an article about me so getting some industry recognition.
Traveling to a new place or visiting family is my favorite thing to do. Here’s this year’s list, 9 different states and 3 new countries, not one full month spent in Denver.
JANUARY:
Jackson Hole, WY snowboarding with friends (Highlight: seeing a moose on the ski run!!)
FEBRUARY:
Taos, NM snowboarding trip with friends for my 38th birthday (Highlight: live music at a bar)
MARCH:
Tucson, AZ for work NAEM conference (Highlight: cucumber vodka lemonades)
APRIL:
Houston, TX for abuelita’s celebration of life
MAY:
Birmingham, MI for Luka’s birthday
JUNE:
Vienna, Austria trip with my mom (Highlights: ALL THE ART!! Absolute best and champagne breaks)
JULY:
Collbran, CO camping for 4th of July
Lake George, NY for Betty Brown’s celebration of life
AUGUST:
Nagawicka Lake, WI for grandpa Bob’s 95th birthday
Serbia and Montenegro for our 5th year wedding anniversary (Highlights: Basketball player Boban Marjanovic being at the same restaurant and all the cats in Montenegro)
SEPTEMBER:
Houston, TX for business trip (Highlight: Got to see SanJuanita and parents for a night)
OCTOBER:
Minneapolis, MN for work training
NOVEMBER:
Birmingham, MI for sisbro’s birthday and went to see Metallica (Highlight: Detroit Institute of Art with so many dutch paintings)
Tampa, FL for Thanksgiving with the Brown family (Highlights: Salvador Dali, wild dolphins and saving Sofi)
DECEMBER:
Houston, TX for Christmas with the family (Highlight: Go Karts with the siblings!)
The times I wasn’t traveling but stayed in Denver were memorable: 1- Goat yoga 2- Getting a limo to see SOFI TUKKER at Red Rocks 3- Bridgerton themed brunch with Elizabeth 4- Indoor mini golf with friends where I won :D 5- Denver Nuggets won the NBA championship and my obsession with Jokic started 6- Seeing The Book of Mormon 7- Makeup class with Kate at Sephora, and finally learning better makeup techniques (I know what to do with primer and bronzer) 8- Obsessed with Women’s World Cup games 9- Vivas Streets where Denver closed Broadway and Welton and had it open for bikers/walkers and no cars. So much fun. 10- Free outdoor movie The Goonies at Curtis Park 11- Tried something new: Hip Hop class with Holly 12- Seeing Jerry Seinfeld 13- Discovered new favorite restaurants: Jovanina’s Broken Italian and Bao Brewhouse
Relax time at home:
Creating art of any form is my favorite pastime. And this year I’ve become obsessed with creating miniatures. A few inspired by my recent travels: Mozart's home after Austria and Porto Winery after Portugal.
Favorite books I read this year: o The Blueprint for Revolution by Srdja Popovic o All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
Bigger focus on skin care. I have a routine of drinking tea collagen every morning, take vitamins and use serum. The occasional face mask.
Favorite TV shows/Movies in 2023:
Shrinking
Beef
Transatlantic
Ted Lasso
Air
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar
BARBIE!!
With all the art obsession this year I came up with our Halloween costume: Vincent Van Gogh and The Starry Night
Baby news!
New nephew Noah born in February 2023 and new baby announcement from Justin and Vanessa again on the same year! (another boy!)
Owen and Pearl had their baby Soren on November 7, 2023.
My 2024 wishes are for better health and continued happiness <3

Teacher shortages are spreading around the world (Worldcrunch) The world is short on teachers. According to a UNESCO report, last year 9% of primary school teachers left the profession, double the rate in 2015. The report blames low pay, poor working conditions, and the high-stress nature of the job for this exodus. In the United States, teacher shortages have led to doubled class sizes, the burgeoning of online courses, and, in some cases, lowered standards when it comes to hiring. One analysis found that the majority of U.S. states are experiencing a shortage of teachers, with turnover rates increasing sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 45% of public schools reported being understaffed, and “hiring elementary and special education teachers remains a challenge”. Europe’s wealthy countries, including France, Germany, Portugal, Italy, and Sweden, are also grappling with the teacher crisis. Part of the reason for this, according to Régis Malet, professor of education at the University of Bordeaux, is the gradual erosion in the social status of teachers. The profession went from “a job with high added social value, prestige, to a form of uncertainty in the mission, loss of meaning and ultimately dissonance between the school and life,” he told Euronews.
Nicaragua’s Miss Universe title win exposes deep political divide in the Central American country (AP) Nicaragua’s increasingly isolated and repressive government thought it had scored a rare public relations victory last week when Miss Nicaragua Sheynnis Palacios won the Miss Universe competition. But the “legitimate joy and pride” President Daniel Ortega’s government expressed in a statement Sunday after the win quickly turned to angry condemnation, after it emerged that Palacios graduated from a college that was the center of 2018 protests against the regime—and apparently participated in the marches. Ordinary Nicaraguans—who are largely forbidden to protest or carry the national flag in marches—took advantage of the Saturday night Miss Universe win as a rare opportunity to celebrate in the streets. Palacios’ victory—along with photos she posted on Facebook in 2018 of herself participating in the protests—overjoyed Nicaragua’s opposition.
Violence in Dublin over knife attack (Washington Post) Right-wing protesters angered by a stabbing attack they believed had involved someone of immigrant background rampaged through central Dublin on Thursday night, leaving behind a trail of burning destruction. Ireland’s police chief on Friday described the unrest, in which double-decker buses, trams and police cars were torched, as “scenes that we have not seen in decades.” The violence and looting through some of Dublin’s most famous streets began after a stabbing attack outside a school that left five people hospitalized. They included three young children and a woman. Police detained a man who also is being treated for injuries. Rumors spread online that the perpetrator of the attack was an immigrant or had an immigrant background. The BBC said the man was an Irish citizen who had lived in the country for 20 years. People the police later described as far-right protesters disrupted the crime scene, chanting anti-immigrant slogans and took to the streets of Dublin, setting vehicles ablaze and clashing with police. 34 people were arrested.
Families Ripped Apart as Pakistan Expels Tens of Thousands of Afghans (NYT) On the day Baz Gul’s world was shattered, he was out scavenging garbage with his 10-year-old son, hoping to earn a few dollars to provide for his family of five. He and his son were arrested on Sept. 12 in the Pakistani city of Karachi during a raid on Afghan migrants. Mr. Gul, 30, was born and raised in Karachi and married his wife there. But as the son of refugees who fled to Pakistan in 1992, he is a citizen of Afghanistan—and no longer welcome in the country of his birth. His wife, Ram Bibi, 29, also an Afghan citizen, sold valuables to hire a lawyer who could argue that Mr. Gul was a legal resident of Pakistan. But he was deported to Afghanistan on Nov. 13, after Pakistan set a deadline for all 1.7 million illegal migrants to leave, most of them Afghans. Mr. Gul is now stranded in a country he does not know, leaving his pregnant wife and his children at the mercy of impoverished relatives to survive. The Gul family is one of hundreds that have been torn apart, rights activists say, as refugees from Afghanistan have poured out of Pakistan, heeding the deportation order or being forcibly removed under a crackdown that followed a rise in tensions between the two countries.
Myanmar’s rebel groups (Washington Post) For decades, Myanmar’s ethnic minorities have rebelled against the country’s military, but mostly on their own and with little success. Now, however, nearly three years after a military coup ousted Myanmar’s democratic government and triggered a civil war, it’s these ethnic rebels, camped out in the country’s mountains and jungles, who pose the biggest potential threat to the ruling junta. While Western governments and international aid agencies have focused much of their attention on the pro-democracy forces led by exiled members of the ousted civilian government, it is increasingly the ethnic rebels tenuously allied with them who are shaping the trajectory of the conflict, security analysts say. These groups have troops, guns and grenades. They control territory, collect taxes and run schools and hospitals. Just in recent weeks, they’ve notched battlefield victories that security analysts say have pushed the junta into its weakest position since the coup. The decisive role of ethnic insurgents in the conflict has come into sharp relief in recent weeks after an alliance of several other rebel groups launched a surprise offensive in Myanmar’s northern Shan state, forcing the military to publicly cede control over major townships. In the south, Karen rebels and their allies, the Karenni, launched simultaneous attacks on military bases, while in the west, a militia representing ethnic Rakhine people opened a new front in the war against the military.
The Taiwan party toughest on China has a strong lead as election nears (Washington Post) China’s hopes for political turnover in Taiwan—to a government more favorable to Beijing—appear likely to be dashed, with the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party on course to secure an unprecedented third term. That is raising fears of even more Chinese military aggression around the democratic island, and the prospect of reignited U.S.-China tensions. Taiwan has never been ruled by the Chinese Communist Party, but Beijing claims it as its territory. The fate of Taiwan has long been the most volatile issue between Beijing and Washington, and a flare up over the results of voting Jan. 13 could derail efforts to stabilize relations. In the past, Beijing has ramped up military intimidation toward Taiwan before and after the vote, to signal readiness to use force if Taipei refuses to submit to Chinese Communist Party rule indefinitely. This time the presidential races come as Chinese military planes and ships have surrounded the island so frequently and in such large numbers over the past 15 months that U.S. officials warn of “miscalculations” spiraling into accidental conflict.
Ceasefire takes hold in Gaza ahead of hostage release (BBC/Worldcrunch) Fighting has paused in Gaza and, after a 24-hour delay, the hostage deal between Israel and Hamas has come into effect. 13 Israeli hostages, 10 Thais and 1 Filipino were freed. After the guns went quiet, humanitarian aid began entering Gaza from Egypt—200 lorries a day are expected, which aid workers say is not enough. In Khan Younis, further north, Palestinians tell say they are "very happy" about the pause in fighting, though they know they may only have four days before the bombs start dropping and tanks start rolling again. Some will continue sifting through the rubble, looking to find trapped family members, after searches were interrupted by new rounds of air attacks. Other Gazans will try to find shelter in what they’ve been told are safer areas in the south of the Palestinian enclave. Some will hurry back to inspect their homes, especially in the northern half of the strip where Israeli ground forces have battled Palestinian militants for weeks.
Many in Middle East blame United States for devastation in Gaza (Washington Post) The entire front page of a Lebanese newspaper this month displayed President Biden’s face superimposed over pictures of dead Palestinian children, under a headline declaring “Western genocide.” In Egypt and some Persian Gulf states, once-bustling Starbucks and McDonald’s outlets sit empty thanks to a boycott of U.S. brands. And in Beirut, Tunis and other Arab capitals, protesters have marched on U.S. diplomatic missions, sometimes burning American flags, to vent their fury at the staggering death toll in Gaza. The prevailing view throughout the Middle East is that while Israel is doing the fighting, this is an American war. Without the diplomatic cover and high-tech munitions provided by the United States, the reasoning goes, Israel wouldn’t be able to carry out the massive operation it launched in Gaza to “eradicate Hamas” that a U.N. official this week said has caused “complete and utter carnage.” In Arab nations, where solidarity with the Palestinian cause has endured for decades, millions are watching as the only force they see as powerful enough to stop the bloodletting in Gaza instead defends it. The U.S.-backed pause in fighting is generally welcomed, but it falls short of Arab calls for the United States to back a longer truce.
In Harare, warnings about dollarization for Argentina (Reuters) From Zimbabwe’s capital Harare to Quito in Ecuador, green bills circulating on the streets and in shops with images of U.S. presidents reflect a big choice that has been made: picking the dollar over the local currency to bring economic stability. The two countries offer a lesson—and warnings—for Argentina, the latest nation globally to toy with the idea of ditching an embattled local tender in favor of the greenback, a signature campaign pledge of President-elect Javier Milei. Zimbabwe abandoned its currency in 2009 to combat hyperinflation, opting for a multi-currency system centered on the U.S. dollar. The government reintroduced the local currency in 2019, but it rapidly lost value. Most transactions are currently in greenbacks. Zimbabwe’s dollarization story is as full of warnings as it is with promise. Many people watched as their savings were erased when the dollar was adopted in 2009. “We just woke up and there was nothing in the account anymore,” banker Bongiwe Mudau told Reuters. “This included my life assurance and medical aid. All was gone in just a day. Dollarization wiped out everything I had saved.” The 47-year-old mother of three, said, however, that dollarization eventually brought stability in prices. From 2008, when prices were doubling almost every day—one of the largest hyperinflations ever recorded—prices fell 7.7% in 2009, according to the International Monetary Fund. “For the first time in years I could budget with a clear understanding that prices would not change. We had a semblance of order in the economy,” Mudau said.
Madagascar president on course for reelection as supporters claim they were promised money to vote (AP) Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina was on course to win reelection Thursday after a vote boycotted by most opposition candidates and as supporters of his party claimed they were promised money in return for backing him. With 85% of ballots counted, Rajoelina had received 59.7% of the vote in last week’s election, according to the national electoral commission. Such a margin of victory would eliminate the need for a runoff election and give him a third term as leader of the Indian Ocean island of 28 million. People have lined up outside the offices of Rajoelina’s TGV party in Antananarivo and other major towns since last week to collect party membership cards, which they claimed would allow them to be paid for their votes. Some said they had been promised about $75 for voting for Rajoelina. TGV has denied promising any money to its supporters. However, party officials have said the membership cards would give people preferential treatment for any future government handouts of food and other provisions in a country the World Bank says has one of the world’s highest poverty rates.
