"...Sand doesn’t always pull his weight, but he can be cute sometimes too.” 

Sand pinches Ray’s side through his sweater, nearly unbalancing them both when Ray shrieks and starts to flail off his lap. “Who’s what now?” he mumbles, bracing himself with his other arm still secure around Ray’s waist. 

“You,” Ray says once they’re stable, sounding very proud of himself. “You’re a cutie.” 

“You weren’t like this with me,” Mew says, laughing a little. Then he seems to realize what he’s just said, eyes going wide and laughter cutting off. “I mean—” 

“No,” Ray interrupts, sounding thoughtful. “I guess not, huh?” 

Sand’s arm around Ray’s waist squeezes a little tighter, and he presses his lips shut. If Mew weren’t here, he’d say something about— being special, maybe— but Mew is here, which is why he has to fight the urge so hard. He can feel the corners of his mouth lifting despite himself, though. 

“Should I be offended?” asks Mew carefully, eyeing Ray and Sand for their reactions. It seems like he’s trying to joke but doesn’t know where the line is, and Sand’s no help. He knows he’s still too tender about it, something in him bruised in Yo’s bar that night. 

Ray must, though. He laughs, a light thing, and says, “I won’t be mad if you want to be jealous of us.” With that, he turns and kisses Sand’s cheek again, sniffing loud into his ear. It tickles, Sand’s face scrunching up. “Maybe you owe me a little.” 

Mew rolls his eyes, but it doesn’t look actually upset despite the way they’re casually joking about their fucked-up little relationship. Their boundaries are beyond Sand.
