We gifted them an entire statue, we only got a flame in return 😂
🇺🇸 Happy 4th of July 🇺🇸
This is a full-size reproduction of the torch held by the Statue of Liberty at the entrance to New York Harbor. The Flame of Liberty was offered to France by the United States, in gratitude for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty in 1986, on the occasion of its centenary.
Upon completion of the restoration, Kevin McCarthy, an attorney for the Métalliers Champenois (the French company in charge of the restoration), during their stay in the United States, had the idea of having an exact replica of the flame made in order to offer it to France as a sign of the continuity of the Franco-American friendship, as was already the case with the Statue of Liberty itself, offered by France to the United States. The International Herald Tribune, which celebrated its centennial in 1987, agreed to co-sponsor the project. A full-page appeal for donations was published to raise the $400,000 needed for the work. The Flame of Liberty was made by Les Métalliers Champenois in Paterson, New Jersey, and was unveiled on September 10, 1987, before being shipped to France by Air France. The Pont de l'Alma was chosen in France and it was inaugurated on May 10, 1989.
Interesting enough when Diana Spencer was killed on August 31, 1997 in a road accident in the tunnel of the Alma bridge, located below the monument, the flame-shaped monument has thus become a kind of "sculpted illustration" of Elton John's memorial song to Diana, entitled Candle in the Wind. Since then, some visitors seem to believe that the flame is a monument specifically built in memory of the princess, presumably because of the song.
The flame, because of this detour from its original function, has been described as a "social palimpsest*," and presented as an example of the notion of "counter-monument" developed by James Young.
*Palimpsest: a very old text or document in which writing has been removed and covered or replaced by new writing.

History
August 31, 1786 - Shays' Rebellion began in Massachusetts as ex-Revolutionary War Captain Daniel Shays led an armed mob. The rebellion prevented the Northampton Court from holding a session in which debtors, mostly poor ex-soldier farmers, were to be tried and likely put in prison. Following this, in September, Shays' troops prevented Supreme Court sessions at Springfield, Massachusetts. Early in 1787, they attacked the Federal arsenal at Springfield, but were soon routed and fled. Shays was sentenced to death but was pardoned in 1788.
August 31, 1980 - Solidarity, the Polish trade union, was formed at Gdansk, Poland. Led by Lech Walesa, Solidarity opposed Communist rule and was outlawed in 1981. Seven years later, the re-legalization of Solidarity occurred and the government agreed to hold partially free parliamentary elections. Solidarity candidates scored stunning victories in the elections that followed, gaining power in Poland and paving the way for the downfall of Communism there.
August 31, 1997 - Britain's Princess Diana died at age 36 from massive internal injuries suffered in a high-speed car crash, reportedly after being pursued by photographers. The crash occurred shortly after midnight in Paris inside a tunnel along the Seine River at the Pont de l'Alma bridge, less than a half mile north of the Eiffel Tower. Also killed in the crash were Diana's companion, Dodi Fayed, 42, and chauffeur Henri Paul. A fourth person in the car, bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, was seriously injured.

The Pont de l’Alma is a bridge in Paris, France that connects the Left Bank to the Right Bank across the Seine River. The name comes from the Russian Alma River, and it links the Left Bank to the Right Bank.It has been a prominent location in Paris’ history, including Princess Diana’s death in 1997. The Pont de l’Alma is a beautiful bridge with many art sculptures, and it offers an excellent view of the cityscape from atop.

The Insomniac on the Bridge (Raul Ruiz, 1985) two insomniacs on the bridge actually, who see in not sleeping the ability to control/abuse the awake world - a world of infinite individual parts and consciousnesses. and they and the movie slip in an out of those parts and consciousnesses. typical disorienting stuff from ruiz, though maybe a little smaller in scope. he made 5 movies this year.
