Thematically, Houseki no Kuni ended as a masterpiece. It's approachs towards the impermanence of self, the history and trauma we inherit, how to break a cycle you end up disturbing the fake peace and causing and suffering pain.
But most of all, the absolute loneliness of having a self. Of the human experience. And how this loneliness will be broken by other's interactions, how you will be perpetually changed by others. And you will crave for it or abhor it and fear it but there's no running from others affecting and changing and forming you.
Thematically, a story like no other. That I will carry with me.
Plot wise, though...? ... Huuuuh.
#plot wise: Ichikawa needed almost all the gems to become more selfish than they had ever been#to make that story work in that ending#it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth because it feels a disservice to the characters and their society#the reason why the gems obsess over each other so much is because they literally only had each other - a story about grief#and then their “happiness” feels surface empty and unearned - at the cost of Pho's suffering#those were characters who were very kind at the beginning - so this really makes no sense#houseki no kuni spoilers#houseki no kuni manga#land of the lustrous spoilers#land of the lustrous#houseki no Kuni
