I hope I'm wrong but PLL: Summer School also known as PLL: Original Sin will probably be canceled after the second season because the promo for this season is atrocious. I didn't even know it was coming out and I follow a ton of pages that talk about film and tv. I really think that they want it to fail for some reason.

The PLL Reboot Needs to Kill More Important Characters
I've had fun watching the PLL reboot, but I can't stop thinking about how limited they are by the plot armor on the main cast and basically everyone they care about. The reboot really wants to be a slasher, something the original show was not, but none of the main Liars have died, only one has lost a family member, and none have lost love interests, unless that love interest turns out to be an antagonist (Chip). There are a reasonable number of deaths when you start adding them up, but most of them pack no emotional punch whatsoever, and don't really create a sense of danger.
In 1x01, we're introduced to our main characters- Imogen, Tabby, Noa, Faran, and Mouse. And by the end of season 2, the only deeply personal deaths they have suffered are Davie (Imogen's mother in 1x01), and arguably Chip (though he is a villain), maybe Karen because they feel responsible for setting Archie on her and she and Imogen were friends once, but none of them ever seem to actually miss her or anything. They've dated a collective 8 characters, and only 1 has been killed (again, Chip, who is a villain).
By contrast, if you look at another high school teen slasher show, MTV's Scream, you'll see a large difference in the importance of the deaths. In 1x01, we're introduced to our main characters- Emma, Audrey, Riley, Brooke, Noah, Will, Jake, and Kieran. By the end of season 2 (including the holiday special), literally half of them are dead. All of the survivors have had at least 1 love interest murdered, and most of them have had 2. Some have lost antagonistic love interests, but all of them have lost at least 1 genuine protagonist love interest. More than one have lost a parent. And that's not even counting the 2 members of the group who were killed as the opener to the show (because they aren't really main characters, but they are friends/members from the main group, making their deaths personal to our core protagonists in a way Angela's opening death is not).
PLL doesn't even kill the main villains (all 4 have survived the first two seasons, even Wes who got pitchforked in the chest??), whereas Scream killed their main villains either immediately or shortly after their reveals (only 2, but they still killed both of them). While PLL has been willing to take out secondary antagonists and random characters, Scream took out main characters, main love interests, secondary protagonists, main villains, secondary antagonists, and random characters, making the deaths feel less predictable and the killers more dangerous, even though I don't think there's a huge body count difference between the two properties.
Now, I'm not arguing that MTV'S Scream is by any means a masterpiece, but I do really appreciate that they didn't wrap everyone up in plot armor. Emma is obviously your final girl who the mystery centers on, so I didn't ever feel she was in danger of dying, but everyone else felt reasonably fair game, and that really helped hold onto the tension. I really thought season 2 of the PLL reboot might have the guts to take out one of the main girls (or at least a main love interest and/or family member) to make things feel actually dangerous, but they just never did.
If there's a season 3, I think they really need to be gutsier about who they're willing to take out. At this point, the plot armor is so thick, I almost think the only way to regain your tension is to kill a Liar.
Anyway, idk how everyone else feels, but this was one of my biggest issues with season 2. Bloody Rose doesn't feel scary because we already know all the girls will pass their final girl tests.

Just a heads up, Elias Kacavas used a butt double for PLL: Original Sin. I know, broke my heart too. Hoping he shows his real one in season 2, now that he's a series regular.
He DID show his real butt in Euphoria
didn’t he show everything in euphoria?

Noa and Jen
Tiny Rant…
So I didn’t love season one if PLL: Original Sin but I liked the characters quite a bit and so I gave season 2 a shot and was honestly loving it. I loved that they were setting up a queer storyline for Noa (especially since I’ve been shipping her with Faran for a hot minute) Noa is easily my favorite character and being a bi girl myself I was super excited.
…However the way they’ve been handling it this season is driving me up the wall. Honestly I didn’t have a huge problem with it until the new episode came out today (Episode 6). They weren’t writing Noa the same she felt really inconsistent (I’m just saying. The girl who when the juice for her moms drug charges and was head over heels in love with her golden retriever bf in season feels so different from the girl who’s cheating and lying to said bf and really likes a girl who’s just making her life harder than it needs to be.) mind you consistent character writing is not Roberto Aguirre Sacasa’s strong suit so I let it slide and kept loving Noa because outside of her relationship she felt like the same character. And I kind of view this the same way as Riverdale and the OG PLL. Cheating doesn’t matter in the long run. Forget about it.
BUT THIS SHIT!!! DURING PRIDE MONTH!!! I can’t.
The fact that they are portraying a bi girl like this IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 2024!?!??! Jen is not a very good person. Straight up that’s okay! Not all characters have to be good people but the fact that she’s being set up in an incredibly contrived love triangle, on top of the bisexual cheating trope!!??! I thought we were done with portraying young bi women as being flighty, indecisive, and cheating. (Not to mention there are moments that I feel it but I do feel like Noa has more chemistry with Shawn who is a literal sweetheart but I don’t feel the sparks really with Jen all the time.) Cheating on Shawn is literally against all of Noa’s character traits. She’s loyal, honest, blunt, and kind. Not manipulative, and indecisive. And the fact that after Jen ROBBED HER BF HOUSE SHE ACTED LIKE THEM BEING TOGETHER WAS STILL AN OPTION?!!!!!?? Girl are you good??? I am glad however that they aren’t making it a throuple because I would hate for the only representation that community gets being (again) the cheating trope!!! I know queer rep isn’t something Roberto is good at but for this to be what we get is appalling.
Jen is toxic. At this point I’m convinced Noa is being drugged, or has been replaced with a clone when she interacts with Jen and Shawn. Shawn is a sweetheart he doesn’t deserve this. WHAT THE FUCK?!?!
To sum it all up PLL you have 2 options:
Fix Noa and Shawn
or give us Noa and Faran
Please tell me your thoughts as well!! This episode was kinda the final straw for me. Noa is still my fav and probably always will be but this is just driving me crazy and I needed to get it off my chest!

PLL: Summer School Random Recap Ep 1 & 2
*read at your own risk: THIS HAS SPOILERS*
Tag spoilers if you're going to share.
Just a few of my favorite moments from the first two episodes of PLL: Summer School (PLL: Original Sin, Season 2):
Faran being right all the time:
Tumblr media
Ripped out of the headlines. Faran...PREACH, girl. (side note: Sullivan really annoys me. I'm salty AF that she still has a license to practice psychology after not being an adult for the girls in PLL. I get it...A apparently threatened her kid, but woman...YOU ARE THE ADULT!). Also I don't trust her. And I don't like her.
Noa also being right, but in a more blunt manner:
Tumblr media
Ah, Noa. Still my favorite. Perhaps it's her characterization or perhaps it's the way Maia portrays her...but I feel like she steals the screen when sharing it and when alone. No surprise given she was my favorite in the first season (still get chills watching that scene with her running through her complex to the roof with A chasing her). But she's upped the game this season. She comes across as so natural in her delivery. Nothing against the others. But sometimes I can tell I'm watching an actor play a character with them, but Maia is Noa. A+. No notes.
Imogen Emison reference?
Tumblr media
Wait...wait WAIT...was this an EMISON reference? Am I the ONLY one who saw this?! "Pip gets Estelle in the end." Plus it was an LGBTQ couple who adopted her baby!!
Mouse is coming into her own and I love it:
Tumblr media
Mouse and Ash are my OTP. And they play well off of each other.
Calling out the OG PLL:
Tumblr media
Was this a shot at PLL and how easily Mona and Charlotte just cruised out when they wanted? Because I love it.
Greg is so not here for this shit:
Tumblr media
The first time I laughed so hard I had to pause. Greg is an asshole, but I feel his frustration on the cult shit. And Kelly's "Quiet!" afterwards...peak comedy.
Kelly channeling her inner Alison DiLaurentis:
Tumblr media
Oh my GAWD. This was some straight up Dark Alison DiLaurentis on crack shit (or Mona, since..ya know...she ran her best friend over with a car). I'm developing this theory that perhaps Kelly is in on Bloody Mary (goddamn, am I blanking on the Big Bad's name? I think I am). I'm fairly certain her mother and the pastor are evil. I paused when Mouse was reading something on the Spaghetti site and it was word for word worship talking about Bloody Mary being the second coming of Jesus. Also, I just hate religion as a whole. Like Greg, I too, am an atheist.
Mouse's Grandma being the "fun" Grandma:
Tumblr media
Okay, so I was super excited that we might have been getting a semi-Grandma Marin character, but after watching I have this awful feeling that this might be a dementia story in the works (I don't know if I believe the "sleepwalking" bit). But she seems like she's going to be a wonderful addition.
Tabby's very pointed reference within a reference:
Tumblr media
Tabby out there breaking the 4th wall. And I'm here for it. Given that the writers retconned/rewrote the Ezria adoption due to backlash, I'm kind of glad they read the criticism of Tabby making too many references that piss the viewers off and basically flipped a middle finger at the people who will find positively anything to bitch about. I think it's funny writing. Trolling AF, but still funny.
I hate it when writers cave to the viewers. And as much as I hated the idea of Ezra getting Imogen's baby...I thought it was so dumb to cave to the viewers whining about Ezria getting the kid. People harped on that so much. Ezra can die in a fire for all I care, but I'll go to my grave thinking that the people who complained about Marlene caving to fan service in PLL with the couples in the end are the same people praising the fan service here. And I hate hypocrisy more than I hate fictional characters. I'm a cynic.
Noa being real:
Tumblr media
Noa complaining about the fitted sheet was ironic given I was trying to do laundry while watching. Accurate. Side note: I don't know how I feel about this Jen character. I feel like Shawn (Sean? How is it spelled?) is one of the few non-toxic partners in the show (Ash is still bae). I'm all here for bi-representation, but I don't like love triangles and I don't want them fucking with Noa and Shawn/Sean.
And speaking of love interests:
I love this kid and want to protect him:
Tumblr media
I've seen buzz of people not trusting Christian...and I get it. First of all...this is PLL. And second of all Christian is a very...themed name for a show that is most likely going to have the faith-based cult be psychopaths.
But I am going to be pissed AF if they make him a bad guy after everything Tabby went through. Also, let's not make the first prominent black male a problem please (not counting the Dollar Store fake Eddie Lamb or Faran's dad, who hasn't really been villainy).
Final thoughts: Goddamn, Sandy ate it hard, bruh. I was kind of excited to see that rivalry between her and Kelly.
Loved seeing the power of speaking up about the sexual assault. HATED Wes still being a character and also telling Tabby to have sympathy for her rapist's mother? No. Sorry. She raised a rapist...who raped TWO girls. And she was victim-shaming Tabby. Where is that Bloody woman with the knife when you need one?
Speaking about someone I hated seeing: Sean's mother is a raging thundercunt.
Also: I've seen mixed thoughts about the couple setting a firm tone with Imogen about the baby, but I'm not going to lie...I get it. Most likely they know the shit going on in their town (move, MOVE NOW WHILE YOU STILL HAVE THE CHANCE!). I do think they were kind of snappy with her, but as viewers we have no idea how often she shows up after having signed a legally binding document about the adoption.
Love interest wise: Don't know how I feel about Ash following the girls to that cabin, but also...why TF would they even GO there?! I like this Christian guy for Tabby. Henry kind of annoyed me crossing Faran's boundaries, but Faran punching Greg out was *chef's kiss*. And Shawn(Sean)/Noa are adorable.
Parents: I'm shifting to Tabby's mom being a favorite just because I think she's going to have the most screen time. It was nice seeing Lea Salonga again though. I still hate Faran's mom and I hate that they are all buddy-buddy after everything she did to her child.
New characters: Please don't let this swim coach turn into a creep, please don't let this swim coach turn into a creep. Also curious about the guy Imogen met at the Ice Cream place. And well...I'm already in love with Christian (but then again I love Noah Alexander Gerry). Jen is a bit wooden. Can't tell if it's the character or actress.
Curious about everyone's thoughts.
Honorable mention I forgot to screenshot and caption:
Mouse: "You're like Linda Hamilton from the Terminator movie. Don't ask me which one, I'm not Tabby. And you (Noa) are basically the Flash." Faran: "Fair." Noa: *shrugs* "Okay."

Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin Season 1 Review
Tumblr media
Twenty years ago, a series of tragic events almost ripped Millwood apart. Now, in the present day, a brand-new set of Little Liars finds themselves tormented by an unknown assailant.
So as someone who had a love-hate relationship with the original Pretty Little Liars, and watched it religiously, I decided to give PLL: Original Sin a go, and completed it in a weekend. PLL: Original Sin definitely has a different vibe to the original. As much as I enjoyed it, it just wasn’t the same, and I wasn’t invested in the characters or storyline like I was with the original. I also felt that there were too many main characters, which made it harder to keep the individual storylines and relationships straight in my head, and it took quite a while for me to feel any level of interest for them.
I could actually see elements of Pretty Little Liars in it, but I liked some of the ways in which it was different, especially the very clear horror movie inspiration. I felt that it was well done, and certainly felt that aspects of the show could be compared to the Scream tv show, which I personally loved. The references to horror are both obvious and subtle, and they were weaved throughout the narrative and definitely came full circle for those paying attention.
Unfortunately I felt that the show didn’t do enough with the main mystery – Pretty Little Liars had so many more threads to pull, and yes that made it more chaotic, but I also felt it made their storylines more engaging in the long run. I did like that a lot of the narrative came together in the final episode of season 1 and was wrapped up with hints of continuation, but like I said there was much less mystery surrounding PLL: Original Sin.
I did feel that the ‘A’ reveal was kind of lame, and the whole bullying storyline that surrounded it was well overdone. The reasoning behind punishing the parents and their kids for everything and not others felt incredibly over the top and, frankly, ridiculous.
I enjoyed the little nods to Pretty Little Liars and Rosewood. For the most part the story was entertaining, and I am definitely interested in watching season 2, even though the story didn’t grip me as much as the original.

hi!! 😊 i liked that christian was a major red herring. it was nice to be validated even though i was expecting it. i like christian but i think he is a little too similar to tabby to be interesting as a love interest. they are the male and female versions of each other 🤣
johnny deserved better. although i think he was a little too understanding with imogen at times, he knew she was going through it and i respect him for that. the way she demanded to see his texts and look at his search history was such a red flag. of course i get it in this context but irl that would not be okay. maybe imogen need to be single for a while.
i don’t like jen. i will never like jen. she’s manipulative and a liar. i will never excuse how she deflected and made noa the bad guy in the conversation where noa attempted to confront her about robbing shawn’s house. how their shippers ignore that problematic behavior is beyond me. i’m sad that she will be in season 3. at least i’m not alone in this as i’ve seen a lot of people complaining about this ship in the pll original sin instagram comments. i hope the writers hear our complaints. it has made noa my least favorite liar when i used to love her.
Hi! I agree!
You are so right about Christian! I should have trusted my 2x01/2x02 gut that he was a red herring, but then I got so suspicious of the fact that no one was suspicious of him when they obviously should be. jksdhfksdf. I'm still baffled by how Tabby didn't think to put either Wes or Christian on their original suspect list, considering their love of horror and the masks stuff, but I'm just gonna have to learn to accept that. I'm glad Christian was good too, though. I never wanted him to be bad, just was very suspicious he might be. They definitely gave him some dialogue that pointed his way. But he was a good red herring! He worked until the finale when they started getting suspicious and then I knew it wasn't him.
I have said it once and I will say it again, Johnny is quite literally the chillest dude on the planet (😂 this will never stop being funny to me, I am sorry). I'm also glad that he's not bad because I think he's an enjoyable addition to the cast and I hope he is in next season (again, assuming they get a next season) because we still know almost nothing about him, so they could do a lot of fun things with his character. But I do think Imogen needs to take some time, regardless of the Johnny stuff (I mean, he really should NOT want to date her ever again because she nearly killed him??) because this was a mess. I also think all the girls (but particularly Imogen and Tabby) do still need mental healthcare, but obviously not with Dr. Sullivan.
Aaaaahhh, the Jen stuff. I just kept thinking there was going to be some sort of reveal/resolution that made the Jen stuff feel like it worked in the season and had a reason to be there. I had so many possible scenarios I was willing to accept. and yet, they managed to find one which was none of them??? I can't believe I sat through so much love triangle crap for literally no payout. I hate love triangles and the only redeeming quality is that they usually have a big blowout scene when it all comes out, but they didn't even give us that???? It will be interesting (assuming they get a season 3) to see if they respond to the criticism like they did with the Ezra thing, because a lot of people feel Noa's carelessness about the situation (and she was super, super manipulative towards Shawn throughout this, as well) ruined her character for them. Now, I think it's fine to tear a character down and need to build them back up, and I think it's good to see the Liars engage in flawed behavior, the problem I have here is... they (the show) have given no indication that they think they actually DID tear Noa's character down? Like, I am sorry, but her behavior was flat out cruel and she felt a tiny bit bad about it for like 2 seconds and faced absolutely 0 consequences, and that, not that she made some terrible decisions, is the real problem here. It's not "tearing a character down to build them back up" or even "giving a character flaws" if those things are never acknowledged as flaws and terrible behavior in the first place? Ugh. There was just so much potential with this storyline (literally so much!) and they just threw it all straight in the trash.
