Your choice to skirt around a problematic issue today rather than addressing it directly is your method of operation to avoid the stress and strain from raking havoc on your physical and emotional wellbeing. There is a positive benefit to this thought pattern but it’s not going to resolve the issues from constantly resurfacing with even more detriment to you. A distant female within your circle of friends or family will provide the answer to your dilemma today by consulting the wisdom of her family but you must be prepared to reach out to her if you want this problem to go away.

Connecting With Your Deck
This is a quick guide on choosing and getting acquainted with your cartomancy deck. I can’t confirm that this is a recommended or widely used method, but it’s what I did and I’ve been getting accurate and insightful readings for years now.
Your first step is choosing a deck. My goal when choosing mine was to find a well loved deck of playing cards, one that had seen many hands and hopefully learned many things. I happened to find an old, clearly worn one in my basement that’s worked great. I can’t promise your finds will happen as perfectly as mine did, but if you’d like to search some thrift stores by all means give it a go!! Whether you luck out finding a unique one or pick one up from a drugstore make sure you cleanse it first in your way of choosing.
After cleansing, get to shuffling!! Turn the cards over in your hands, get comfortable with them. As you do this, begin to ask the deck if it wants to work with you. I find it important with any tools I use to make sure that they understand their intended purpose and are able or happy to oblige. I recommend very literally introducing yourself, explaining your intentions, explaining the ways in which you wish to work together, and then asking if the deck wants to work with you. It’s important to have tools you can trust!! Then, draw your cards and see what the deck has to say, expect it to start simple!!
After your initial introductions and agreements are reached, begin to ask the deck about itself. What does it want to help you with? What role does it wish to play in your practice? Playing cards are quite a bit different from tarot, I’ve found they have more personality and tend to have an affinity for certain topics. For example, as I’ve gotten more comfortable with reading I’ve begun to ask my deck what it wants to talk about at times, giving it room to offer any advice it may have. As a result of this, I’ve learned it’s very interested in relationships and is quick to ask about people and offer its knowledge on their intentions. Up to this point, it’s been pretty spot on about those it can answer for and honest when people I’ve asked about are hard to read. When I go too long without asking these questions I tend to have “stalker” cards (recurring cards no matter how well I shuffle) in my readings that often turn into conversations about relationships when I address them. Nothing wrong with this, just one of the quirks of my deck.
If it hasn’t become clear from the way that I talk about cartomancy, I approach a lot of my readings like a conversation. I tend to do lots of different drawings in one sitting the same way you would sit and talk with someone; we go back and forth asking and telling. I’ve tried having more strict readings where I only have set questions I want to ask, and still do on occasion, but my readings tend to be more productive if I let the session evolve and get as much information as possible about the entirety of a situation. If you feel working this way makes sense for you, I recommend starting with low-stakes questions or things you may already know the answers to just to get used to how responses may be phrased or shown.
A few examples of questions you can ask/start with:
What card do you feel represents me?
What do I tend to focus on in my practice?
What should I focus on in my practice?
Etc.
You know more about what it is you want from card reading so take some time to think about it!! Start with questions that make sense for your style of divination!!
I want to make clear that this method is entirely made up by me. It’s the best thing I devised from the very generic, recycled information I found about cartomancy when doing my research. Therefore, this means there are likely lots of holes in it and places for improvement. If you find ways that work better for you, then reblog or comment with your findings!! I’d love to know!! That’s all from me, do your own research, stay safe, and happy reading ♧

Divination with Playing Cards
In response to this ask I got earlier today, I decided to do a quick deep-dive into my research materials about divining with playing cards vs tarot cards. Here's the research I found in Old Tradition Crafte, translated by Robin Artissan (2005):
"Meanings may be assigned to a pack of playing cards, to be spread out and read as omens so a situation may be given clarity and direction as well as understanding." This style of reading is claimed to have been used by witches in the 18th-late 19th century, according to Old Tradition Crafte translated by Robin Artissan (2005). According to Artissan, "It has been taken from those who practice the North Berwick Style of Crafte, but is not old enough to be the original system. The cards used in this system are ordinary playing cards. There is no mention of Tarot cards in this system."
Heart Suit
King - good-natured man, honest and inventive Queen - affectionate and loving woman Knave - loyal and trusting friend 10 - victory, gain, success, reward 9 - enterprise and money, good position 8 - physical pleasures (sex), affection, lust for life 7 - friendship, commerce, enterprise, successful business 6 - courtship, a generous person 5 - marriage, a gift, discovery 4 - trouble and jealousy, a friend who doubts you 3 - warning, sorrow, poverty and failure 2 - successful ideas that need plans and strategy Ace - home, comfort, celebration, but may turn to quarreling
Spade Suit
King - a man who has ambitions without ethics Queen - a woman who intrigues but is a false friend Knave - a man of treacherous reputation; he may be a man of law or authority 10 - warning, grief, strife, trouble 9 - sickness and misfortune, ruin, failure, death 8 - danger, loss, obstacle 7 - bad luck, loss of friendship, money loss or problems 6 - unwanted problems, money gain if it's worked for 5 - trouble resulting from hasty action or bad council 4 - illness or an accident 3 - journey or travel 2 - loss Ace - back luck/omens, misfortune, slander
Diamond Suit
King - father, protector or parent Queen - a woman of a kind and generous nature; flirtatious girl or woman Knave - a sly and deceiving man, letters or news, discovery 10 - business success and enterprise, gain 9 - successful endeavors, wisdom and knowledge to reach goals 8 - late marriage, good luck 7 - scandal and unjust slander; for a business enterprise this card means more cucess 6 - early marriage or decisions 5 - unexpected news 4 - betrayal, or an enemy uncovered 3 - fighting or quarreling 2 - friends warn of a snare, take their advice Ace - good luck, marriage proposal, good news
Club Suit
King - a reliable man, but gets too free with advice and promises Queen - an intelligent and easy-to-trust woman Knave - a good friend 10 - legacy, children, good family 9 - money, gain and position 8 - caution, retribution 7 - caution against the wiles of the opposite sex, false hope 6 - success in enterprise, business or industry 5 - a comfortable marriage 4 - change 3 - three days, weeks, months or years 2 - a disappointment or let-down Ace - good news, success

What Does The Deck Say? June 26, 2024
Tumblr media
You have been capitulating for the sake of peace and holding your tongue lest you upset the family, but enough is enough. You have a decision to make. Do you make your opinion of the matter clear and hold your ground, or do you place your hope in a box and put it far away from you so everyone can pretend to be in agreement one more day? Consider carefully the consequences of your options, and recognize that while there will never be a time when everyone is going to accept the inevitable, if it is not safe for you to make that stand now, do what you have to do to keep yourself safe and plan to remove yourself sooner than later.
The Standard Playing Card Tarot is a full 80-card, poker size tarot with majors and cavaliers in the art style and using the suits of a standard deck of playing cards. The general association with the traditional Tarot suits is Hearts to Cups, Clubs to Wands, Diamonds to Coins, and Spades to Swords. Created by Jared Presler of Enigmagic Studios for the purpose of game playing as well as cartomancy, decks are available at Etsy: Enigmagic Studios while supplies last. The Standard Playing Card Tarot is ©Enigmagic Studios.
“What Does The Deck Say” is a weekday series of 3 card pulls from a cartomancy deck. No context or query is given to frame what the cards say as the posts are reading samples and not personal instruction. The result is sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, and usually surprising. All readers are invited to leave a comment about what they perceive in the random spread as each person will interact with the cards in their own way.
Personalized, direct, and private cartomancy readings are available via Ko-Fi: Noxporium.

Having trouble with cartomancy? Wondering what the tarot equivalent to the playing card definitions are?
Here is a cheat sheet we made for cartomancy, with the addition of their tarot parallels!
Feel free to leave comments on it, and please send asks if you have any suggestions for things to add! I am also open to researching other divination methods to put on here or another spreadsheet to help people!

My toxic trait is I believe that people who are into tarot divination should also learn at least some history regarding tarot as a family of card games
No, really, tarot games are genuinely a lot of fun and the fact that outside of france and strongly-french influenced regions, tarot games are pretty much unheard of makes me sad. Same goes for tarock games outside of former austria-hungary (and parts of germany) and tarocco games outside of italy.
"but playing cards don't have cups, coins, swords, and wands for their suits" yes they do!!! in italy and spanish-speaking parts of the world!!! sure they're more commonly called "clubs" when it comes to wands, but still!!!
"but what would the major arcana be there for if not divination?" they're the permanent trump suit!!! they beat non-trumps and lower trumps!!! Also!!! the fool is a trump only in the tarock branch of the family of games!!! in Tarocchi and Tarots it's its own thing!!!
"ok but what about the knight face cards?" they're there because in italy, where tarocco ("original italian tarot") cards came from, the cards feature either a horseman, or a dame!!! inclusion of both is a parity!!!
"but how do I learn to play?" the Piemontese game of Scarto is a great introductory point to tarot games. It uses a 78 card deck, so if you have a divinatory deck you may use that, or you can buy yourself a French Tarot deck (look for "jeu de tarot") or a Tarocco Piemontese deck. If you get a French Tarot deck, the suit equivalencies are hearts=cups, diamonds=coins, spades=swords, clubs=clubs/wands. The wikipedia article I've linked has the rules described well, or if you're a hands-on learner, this site lets you play the game against bots, and also has a rulebook button. Warning tho, the site uses a scan of an old tarocco piemontese deck, so it may be a bit hard to read. Once you decide you'd like something more, you can move on to French Tarot, which is the second most popular card game in france to this day. There's a great android app for this game too, and I believe it features a rules explanation too.

There is an inner certainty brewing that the time is ripe to engage in any discussion or negotiation that relates to buying something on your wish list. Don’t go softly if you want the best deal possible. There is a caution though. Be careful that what you purchase today is truly appreciated and wanted rather than just another object to display on your shelf for others to see but not touch.

I rarely participate in witchcraft discussions because I am Ignorant but I actually have an opinion on the card suits thing! Specifically: I started reading on italian playing cards. Those don't have astrological correspondence with the elements. Instead the reading I went with draws from one of the theories for the origins for the suits:
- swords: nobility, the army, anybody/anything involved with state authority including cops and lawyers
- coins/pentacles: merchants, thieves and anybody/anything involved with exchange of goods and money
- wands: farmers, artisans, physical workers and anybody/anything involved with having to sweat for a living
- cups: the clergy and by extension intellectual work/anybody who talks for a living
This usually works better for me than the element connection, which feels a bit too... ethereal? For the way I learned to read the minor arcana, which in the italian tradition are like. Incredibly straightforward. Like the RWS will be like "conflict... in some practical area of your life..." and the italian old style reading would be like "yeah that blonde coworker of yours is envious don't give her ammo against you"
My reading style is a little different now but it's still very heavily informed by this
I find that playing cards are incredibly straightforward.
For me it's like:
Oracle deck: "You are your most beautiful self, no matter what. Shine on, goddess!"
Tarot deck: "Find your strongest foundations and beware treachery. No insult to you truly reflects on your character. Look towards the future."
Playing cards: "Your boyfriend is getting thirst trapped by Becky from Accounting and he's going to cheat on you next weekend at the employee retreat, dump his ass right now and start texting back Shaun."
I like your elemental associations for people, as well :)
