A big part of my Izzy interpretation is that he is just not that smart and is only vaguely aware of it. He doesn't have any misconceptions of being a genius or anything. He just thinks he's average, maybe a little above, even though he's not.
His social-emotional intelligence is extremely low. He's not great at problem solving. He can't read but if he tried his comprehension would probably be poor. He can't come up with witty comebacks on the spot. The only things he seems to be really good at are sailing (which he has presumably been doing for a very long time) and swordsmanship (which requires spatial awareness and dexterity but also a lot of repetition).
To me this is so so important because Izzy places a lot of value on the usefulness of people, which is why the crew of the Revenge is so irritating to him: they're not really good at what they do (or should be doing). To him, if you're really good at something you should stick to that. For Ed that's being a pirate, even more so than it is for Izzy. Izzy doesn't pick things up quickly so to be anything other than a pirate is an exercise in futility.
But what he doesn't understand is that not everyone is like that. Ed is very quick to pick up new skills when he's interested! If he wanted to live a life doing god knows what he probably could— but Izzy can't. If he were to try to be like, a farmer or something, it wouldn't go well. So— in Izzy’s mind— for Ed to abandon their life as pirates, it's not only a suicide mission, but even if/when he believes that Ed would be safe in his new life, it is also directly abandoning Izzy by going where he cannot follow.
It’s the tragedy of being unable to rise above your station.
