Summary: You’re filming your very first solo movie and Ellen had invited onto her show. Mentioning your brother who is always long distances from you, Ellen gives you a good scare.

"Welcome back to the Ellen show, today is gonna be a special one. A new movie called Overkill, releasing in the month of January. Starring one of the best actresses who started their acting career at a young age. Let's take a look at the trailer."

The audience watched the intense scenes of the trailer, people dying on screen and the trailer end with a girl's face that was covered in blood before it cuts off. The audience clap over Ellen, "Please welcome our guest starring in the movie, Y/N Evans."

The audience shout and clap as the girl walks out, waving her hands at the crowd as she heads over to Ellen by the chairs. Y/N hugs her before they both sit down with grins. "Welcome to the show, Y/N."

"Thank you, I’m excited to be here tonight," She says, looking around. "I'm sure you've been to Los Angeles," Ellen says, Y/N nods. "Yeah, I've been here a few times with premieres but since I'm only sixteen and don't drive yet I stay with my mom in Boston."

The audience chuckle and Ellen smiles, "So, this is one of your first solo movies. You're the main character for this intense movie. How do you feel?"

Y/N nods, "Yes, besides the MCU movies, I think this one was one of my stand alone films that I was happy to be in."

"You seem to have a lot of blood in most of that trailer," Ellen states and the crowd laughs along with Y/N. "That's why it's called overkill. It's brutal," Y/N nods.

"So, where did they take you during the shootings?” Ellen asks.

"You mean when they kidnapped me? Yeah, um..." Y/N jokes. The audience chuckle with Ellen and Y/N laughs, "The film was shot in Boston, it was cool cause I had one of my nephews take a part in it, it was small part but to me it was special."

"Aw," Ellen says, "That's so cool. And we know you have a big brother-uh, Chris Evans, who's Captain America in the Marvel films."

Y/N nods, "Yeah."

"You both are basically the Marvel heroes in the family," Ellen says, Y/N laughs. "It's hard because you know, we both film along with my other brother Scott, we all travel and non-stop, we're all just moving around to film movies. Scott, he takes a little bit of himself at home."

"You two did film a movie that wasn't marvel and it was very outstanding, the relationship between you and him in the movie, everything was so heart warming," Ellen says. "That was actually the first movie we've filmed before he went for Captain America and then I joined in the year of 2016. I was really young."

"So now, you're sixteen and that makes you the youngest out of all of them," Ellen says.

Y/N laughs as it was obvious, the audience do as well, "When you grew up, you and Chris have been like the best siblings ever. You two are just all over the place."

"Yes, he's the best brother I could ever have, I love him, I love my sisters and Scott but Chris has been on my side since I was born so I guess he just favors me."

Ellen smiled, "Do you see him a lot?"

Y/N shakes her head, "I barely see him sometimes, we have some kind of weird schedule, it's so funny. Every time he's finished with his movie, he comes to Boston sometimes and then I leave when he comes home and then I come back and then, he's gone and so it just goes back and forth. We sometimes video chat each other."

"Do you babysit his dog?" Ellen grins.

"I do. I love Dodger," The screen behind them shows a picture of Y/N and Dodger together. Y/N looks over her shoulder, "Yeah, him and I, I love him. It's something to make me think Chris is there and I love my family, it's just Chris and I are inseparable and we hate not being there for each other."

"You have an instagram and I've seen videos of you with his dog, pictures, too. Some of your friends as well, how's that going?"

"I have some friends but not a lot of people talk to me, though. I go to the same school my siblings went to and I do take theater arts, my teachers love me for it and you know sometimes I miss school but I work on the things between breaks of filming so..."

"So, you're not really famous in the school?"

Y/N shrugs, "I mean... people talk to me, I do get asked a lot of questions about my movies. Some even asked for spoilers but you know, I keep my mouth zipped."

"Wow. Do you do any sports?"

"I do (sport) and wrestling, I wanted to try out for football," Ellen tilts her head, "Football? Really?" She asked. Y/N smiles, "I mean I've gotten a lot of practice from my brother."

"Oh, Chris teaches you football?" She asked. Y/N nods with a grin, "He did take me to a football game with Chris Pratt, so I met Chris Pratt for the first time and then I went to some others with Chris and his friends."

"So, you guys are really close."

Ellen's eyes seem to gaze away from Y/N, "I mean he loves me and he'll do anything to--"

"Y/N!" Someone shouts behind her, slamming their hands on her chair.

Y/N screams with a jump as the audience burst out clapping and shouting. Y/N turns around and sees Chris grabbing his chest as he laughs. Y/N gasps and jumps up. Chris holds his arms out and Y/N jumps into his arms.

Chris buried his face into her neck, "You're so mean!" She says. Chris laughs, "I missed you."

"I missed you, too. You’re such a jerk!" Y/N said. The two pull away while Ellen continued to laugh and Y/N groans, "Ugh, I knew something was gonna jump at me in any moment, didn't expect it to be him." Y/N managed to fixed her hair as she sat down. Chris smiled.

Ellen laughs, "Well, welcome back to the show Chris."

"Thank you," Chris said, he sits next to his sister and puts his arm around her shoulder. Y/N wipes the edge of her eyes, she laughs, "He's so mean. He does that so many times."

Ellen smiles, "You two are best siblings ever, how did this happen?"

Chris shrugs, "When I was 22, the day she was born I just..." He looks at his sister, "You know, she was a cute baby. Her little hands and chubby face, I just couldn't-" Chris cuts himself off with a small laugh.

"I remember the posts from your twitter and Y/N's instagram, you guys celebrated her sweet sixteen."

Chris smiled as the photos and videos behind them pop up, one with Y/N in her dress beside Chris. "We wanted to do something special for her, we did do this type of thing for our other siblings but she had a good time. I got a dance with her as a big brother."

The video of Y/N and Chris dancing on the floor, everyone in the audience awed. "You two were always long distances from each other because of your careers, it must be crazy cause you guys are just such great brother and sister."

"Yeah, Mckenna Grace is similar to Y/N and they both just have such good hearts and they're sweet, it's great to work with them and hang out around them."

"How do you feel about her new film?" Ellen asked. Chris smiled, "It looks really good, you know, I'm not a fan of horror movies but I just might be forced to watch it because Y/N invited me to go to her premiere in two weeks along with the rest of the family. I told her I wasn’t gonna be at home for another week but I came here and surprised her." Y/N looks up at him with a grin, his rubs her shoulder.

Ellen smiled, "That's so sweet, you guys are great and so much love for each other and a big family. You're all so talented." Chris nods, "Yeah, there's so much of it going around, Y/N started filming at the age of 8 and so she had 8 years of acting and when she was 10 and I was 32, we filmed our first movie together before she auditioned for Marvel."

"All we need is Scott to be a hero in spandex," Ellen says, Y/N and Chris laugh.

Ellen smiles, "Has Y/N ever gone on set with you for your movies before?"

Chris inhales, "She did," He shuffles, "Just after Endgame, I took her on set with me for Knives Out, so she got to see me be a complete jerk on set." Ellen laughs. Y/N nods, "I did take home his sweaters from set."

Chris nods, "Oh, yeah, Y/N had got two of the sweaters, was it the grey one and the white one? Right?" Y/N nods, "Yep. I wear it to school," Y/N says, causing Chris to laugh.

"Are you very protective of her?" Ellen asked, Chris nods, "Oh, yeah. I'm sure no one messes with her when she says 'my brother is Captain America, back off'." The audience chuckle. "What about football, you worry about that?"

Chris looks down at Y/N, "I mean I hope the practice we had should keep her safe." Y/N laughs. "But in all honesty, I didn't do football in high school but I did do wrestling and she gives me memories of when I did it in my high school year. She's a pro, I can tell you that."

Y/N laughs, "Puts some good use for stunts I do in the films." 

Ellen nods, "Oh, I'm sure wrestling did some things. Did your directors allow you to do the stunts?" She asked

Chris scoffs, "Oh, the Russos let her do her own stunts. I had stunt doubles and she had nothing."

Y/N smiled, "Well, I didn't do the ones where I just fall from a building, I had a woman who did the dangerous ones, I did the hand-to-hand combats."

"So, that swinging around the guys were you?" Y/N nods, Chris smiled like a proud brother, "She's a badass, I think most of our cast had stunt doubles but she pulled off 95% of her stunts on her own."

Ellen smiled. "Yeah, yeah. I mean... I don't have stunt doubles either." The audience laugh and Ellen smiles, "Well, it was good to have you two here, I'm glad to bring the siblings back together, be sure to watch the new trailer if you haven't, Y/N starring as Amber Lakes in the horror film, Overkill. Thank you so much." The audience clap as Y/N and Chris began to hug Ellen then they headed off to the back rooms.

Y/N and Chris both went backstage, Y/N pulled him in a hug. He ‘aws’ with a pout and hugs back more lovingly. "I can't believe you came here,” She mutters in his chest, Chris held her close, "Couldn't just miss an interview for my sister’s first solo movie."

"I love you," She says. Chris makes a 'tsk' sound and sighs, kissing her head with a smile, "I love you, too."

A Queen and Her King || Tom Holland x Reader [Part 1][Gang/Assassin AU]

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is my very first action AU, so I apologize for things that seem oddly unrealistic in the crime world. I obviously don’t know much about it. If you have tips or feedback, please message/ask me about it! I created the idea for this fic through a song called Natalie by Bruno Mars, but I also want to credit @hollandroos​ for her fanfiction, Blow A Kiss, Fire A Gun. It was the very first Mob!Tom fanfiction I read (The first AU like that I’d ever read, actually.) and it still inspires me as I hope to continue this series. I hope for this to get better as it goes along. Just so you have the basic knowledge, this is kind of like a Mobster!AU meets Assassin!AU and a lot of wild crossover shit. 

TRIGGER WARNING: Violence, language, guns, knives, suggestive sexual actions, mentions of pedophilia (It’s not any more graphic, it might even be less, than basic horror movies you might’ve seen. The description is mostly about action, not in depth detail of what it looks like. It’s an assassin/gang/mafia AU, so it’s kind of fucked up anyway.)

Prologue

As three shrill beeps replaced dialing noises, Tom’s anger skyrocketed. He began to pace and repeatedly clench his fists at an attempt to hold back everything he was feeling. 

 “We’re sorry, you’ve reached a number that is either disconnected or no longer linke-“ Tom spun around and threw the phone, sending it flying into his bedroom wall and crashing to the floor. “Goddamnit!” He sat down on the corner of his bed, staring out through the wall-to-wall glass pane that separated him from the rest of the world. The skyline was a vibrant dark blue, turning to purple and black. 

 Every  dollar in his safe he’d worked his ass off to get was gone. There was no trace, no logical reasoning as to how it got stolen. That safe was one of the most protected vaults in the world.

 Natalie, or Natalia as Tom used to call her endearingly, was gone too. 

Disappeared. No word, no warning. 

 Not only had she cheated on him, she robbed him.

 “Tom, what do you want to do to respond?” His best friend and co-leader Harrison asked, frustration clear in his voice.

 “I don’t fucking know. Nothing yet, we’re too vulnerable. We’ll...need alliances.”

 She took his heart out of his chest and walked all over it, puncturing it with her stiletto heels.

 He found out everything she’d done after she left. Of course the man was riddled with sadness and hurt, but the only feeling he let control him was anger.  

He couldn’t be weak. Not now, not ever. 

 After willingly letting her in and finally bringing his guard down, she wrecked him. You know what everyone says? That Natalie Rose Giovanni can never be overthrown. She’s notorious for the lives she takes and everything in between. That she’s untouchable. But in the end, the greatest revenge is going out and accomplishing what is said to be impossible. And that is exactly what he would do.

 This was personal now.

 Natalie, Europe’s top drug queenpin with a terrifying hidden past, versus Thomas Stanley Holland, the most notorious mafia leader in almost every corner of the northern eastern hemisphere. 

 She took everything he had, even some of his very best men.

 His team.

 His power. 

 His reputation. 

 His empire. 

Soon enough, he was going to take every single bit of it back, even if it meant ruining her fucking life. 

 Even if it meant killing her.          

One

“Hang on,” you giggle softly, looking up at the man in front of you. “Why don’t we go back to your room?” 

 His hands had made their way under your thighs and he had you up against a wall, giving him easy access to touch your body. “We’re not exactly in the most private area of the hotel.”

 “If it gets that dress off you, then that’s fine by me,” he replies, kissing down your neck.

 “Eugene!” You push his hands down and stand straight up, smiling coyly at the millionaire while listening for any instructions in your earpiece.

 “You’re doing good. Get the card to his room and be quick with this, (Y/N). This operation has some complications.” 

 “I’m just telling you how I really feel, Allison.” Of all the names Felix could pick for an undercover op, why choose such a plain one? 

 You slip your hand into his pocket, pulling out the key card and tucking it into your bra, all without breaking eye contact with him. “I’ll meet you there in ten,” you whisper in his ear, running a finger down his chest as you walked away.

 “Fucking pig,” you mutter to the man behind the earpiece, making quick time to the elevator.

“Right?” The man in question is Felix Sternberg, (Known as Judas by his “enemies”) one of the most elite proxy murder directors in the world, or at least the most famous among federal government organizations and operations that do things not commonly associated with the human moral code. (Murder, drug dealing, etc.) He’s one of your newest co-workers. The brains behind your newest weapons, technology and escapes. It’s possible that without him, you would’ve been in a supermax prison by now. 

The most intensely protected in the U.S filled with the worst kind of people imaginable.

 People like you.

 “What’s his deal again?” You ask, shaking your head away from the doubting thoughts that often plagued you. 

“Rape, robbery, embezzling, pedophilia, the usual.” Felix says nonchalantly.

 “God, I cannot wait to shower tonight, that’s disgusting...” 

 “You’re also technically a contract murderer for a living, so I don’t know if you’re one to judge, (Y/N).”

“But I’ve never done shit to kids or forced myself on a person. I only kill people who deserve it.” 

“That last part is debatable, but we’re moving on. Wait for the bellboy in the elevator to leave before going up.”

“Sounds good.” 

The red silk dress draped on your body was apart of the job, a request made by the contract. The person who hired you was actually his wife, Valerie Pence. She wasn’t much better than him when it came to money, but once she found out what he’d done, the decision was easy. There also might’ve been infidelity involved in her reasoning.

She’d informed you that the best way to get to him was probably seduction and that his favorite color was red. The combination of the two would make it easy to get him alone. She took you shopping for the dress herself, an odd way of saying thank you (other than money) for the favor. When you stepped out of the changing room to show her, she simply smiled, but her watering eyes displayed a different emotion.

“You look stunning. This’ll work.” You wonder what her thought process was with hiring you, how their relationship came to be and everything in between. Getting personally involved with clients was a beginner’s mistake, but in some cases it was incredibly hard not to even think about what happened between some duos.

“He’s gone, move fast.” Felix interrupts your recollection, snapping you back to your work.

Eventually, you end up in his room, only stopping for a minute to marvel at the lavish decor and to peek around. White silk sheets dressed the king sized bed, complimenting the other colors in the room. Dark reds, black and grey all combined to give the room a sensual and eerie feeling.

Eugene appears soon after, hastily moving toward you, lust in his eyes. “Hang on, let me just go get something ready okay?” You stopped him, one hand steady on his waist the other over his shoulder.

 “Alright...”

“I want you to wear this, though.” You found some questionable fabric, presumably left behind the last hotel-goer, and started to tie it around his eyes as a blindfold. “Now lay here,” you pushed him down on the bed, a little too roughly, but he didn’t question any of it. 

You enter the bathroom swiftly, the door clicking behind you. 

“Felix, where’s my stuff?” You whisper. 

“Underneath the sink. There’s a silenced pistol. The bag has a change of clothes in it and some sunglasses. Put your hair up, too. I have someone ready to tamper with the security footage, but just in case I want you to try and be very discreet and exit through the fire escape. No one should see since you’re on the back of the building. Your ride will be waiting to take you home.”

“Thanks.” You grab the bag and begin to undress, leaving only your satin gloves on. This replaced the fancy dress and heels with what you could only describe as an outfit straight off if 2015 grunge tumblr, doc martens and all. 

Not the worst, but not the best outfit choice.

“I have one more...treat for you you, Mr. Pence.” You call out through the door, smirking to yourself. 4 sets of handcuffed glistened in the bag, and a gag. 

“Thanks for leaving them in there Felix. Did you put her fingerprints on them?” 

“You’re sadistic, but yes. The police and FBI will likely arrest Kathryn and any of her employees. I planted stuff to lead them to the kids. You’re in the clear but you need to get a move on, even if that includes speeding up your ‘process’.”

Kathryn Moseby, a “friend” of the millionaire. She holds a position in congress. She’s also the ringleader of a pedophilic sex trafficking ring. 

“Like I said, he deserves my ‘process’. They all do. I’m doing the world a favor right now.”

“Whatever you say.” 

 You sigh, plucking the bag off the ground and walking back to the bedroom. “I hope you like your girls dominant, Eugene.” You quickly click the handcuff onto his hand and to the bed frame before he could even respond. His breathing started to become uneasy, but he nodded. 

 “It’s new...but I’ll try.” 

“You don’t have a choice.” You whisper, clicking the second handcuff shut. The other two might’ve been too loose, but they’d restrain him. “Final touches,” you smile, climbing into the bed and almost straddling him. He seems taken aback as you jerk the gag tightly to make sure it stays on. “We don’t want anyone to hear us, now do we?” He shakes his head nervously in response.

 As an extra precaution, you switch on the TV to a music station, turning the volume up just enough to mask loud conversations. “Alright Eugene. Let’s begin.” You pick up the pistol and a small knife, crawling on the bed.

You run your fingers along his chin, feeling less gross about touching him because of the fabric between you two.

“I fawt yoo changfed?” He tries to ask in reaction to feeling the gloves, barely audible or intelligible.

“Oh, I did.” You giggle, removing his mask.

[TW: Violence]

He’s shocked, confused, and now scared. His eyes take in your figure and then the gun in your hand. He starts to panic.

“You didn’t think I was gonna let you off easy, did you?” The knife from earlier now glints menacingly in the soft lighting. “I don’t normally do it this slowly, but you’re a special kind of messed up. We’re all fucked up, especially me, but you, you’re a rapist and a pedophile. A cheater. Kind of the scum of the earth.”

He still wasn’t processing his situation entirely, but his chest was rising and falling rapidly. 

He wasn’t screaming. 

He wasn’t begging.

 Yet. 

You jabbed the knife directly above his knee. Angling it towards the bone. This time, his entire body jerked and he started to yell, but the music drowned out his shouts.

“That was for every child and person you’ve ever touched.” You pulled it out, watching the tears stream from his eyes, then ripped past the buttons on his suit shirt. “And this is for Valerie.” 

You slowly carve the knife into his skin, toward the right side of his stomach. It was a number that you carved. 334. 

“I wonder who my 335th will be?” 

“Hey (Y/N), as much as I enjoy tuning your weird shit out and waiting for you, you need to be fast. Like now. We’re cutting our time too close.” 

“I got it.” You frown sarcastically at the pathetic, convulsing man beneath you. “I’d love to stay and chat, but I have to go.” You pull the knife away, wiping the blood off with your gloves. 

The red contrasts the starch white in a disgustingly satisfying way. You stand up, brandishing the pistol excitedly. His screams are becoming increasingly louder, and more annoying. 

Watching him writhe in pain and desperation filled you with a twisted sense of pride. You keep telling yourself that he deserves it to justify your actions, but there’s still that one ounce of innocence in you that rejects those thoughts. 

Then you remember Valerie’s voice on the other end of the phone when she called, tearfully begging for help. She sounded desperate and sad, not angry.

She just wanted him gone. 

Had she tried to divorce him, she might’ve been endangered. If she turned him in for his crimes, he’d send people after her. 

That’s all you need to get the job done.

“I’ll see you in hell.”

Is That Another JoJo Reference?! JoJo's Bizarre Adventure References in Non-Anime Media!

In our previous article, we took a look at the many ways that various anime have paid homage to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, from small sight-gags to extended visual parodies, the amount of creators who felt some love for the series was easy to find! But what about in non-anime media? It isn’t always easy to make a JoJo pose seem tonally correct in your video game, music video, live action  TV show, comic, or other media after all, but these creators we found had more creative and interesting ways of paying homage back to Hirohiko Araki and his amazing series. Much like our first article, we’ll be keeping these reference sightings up to Part 5 only to avoid spoiling any of the future fun, and do be warned that some of these references might be spoilers for past JoJo seasons. Overall, the range of these references varies from minor cameos and callbacks to characters and situations being developed with JoJo characters in mind, so let’s get right into it and take a look at the various non-anime JoJo references we’ve found!

It probably comes as no surprise, but musicians and JoJo go together pretty well. Many of the original names and influences for the series come from Araki’s love of various types of musical genres and artists, and it seems that they love him right back! Numerous singers and even idol groups in Japan have given the nod to their favorite JoJo poses and characters, with some even going as far as reaching out to meet Araki as superfans themselves. Hello! Project’s ANGERME and Iikubo Haruna have done various JoJo inspired poses in their blogs and choreography, even recreating the infamous “Go Go Go” SFX with their arms! The iconic Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is a huge fan of the JoJo series, often making JoJo poses in her own videos, such as in "PONPONPON," and even wearing JoJo themed merchandise, going so far as to even name one of her pet dogs JoJo.

Perhaps one of the most famous idols, Shoko Nakagawa (AKA Shokotan) is a notoriously huge fan of the JoJo series, busting out JoJo poses so often that she even injured herself doing Narancia’s pose on stage, breaking her tailbone! Her devotion has paid off, however, as Shokotan got to meet Araki to interview him! Shoko’s interview even lead to Araki making a special stand, Love Note, with an interesting origin involving... Shokotan and Jotaro’s child?! Outside of Japan, the group Starbomb included Giorno’s “I have a dream” pose in their video for “SMASH!,” with Luigi of all characters striking the iconic pose!

  Some of the most interesting homages to JoJo pop up in various video games, with some being blatantly obvious, and others needing developers to pull back the curtain and reveal their true intentions! Given the nature of JoJo’s storyline of vampires and supernatural powers, it might not be surprising at all to learn that the Castlevania series has featured numerous nods to the JoJo series throughout its legendary run. Castlevania Symphony of the Night features a Stone Mask, and it makes another appearance in Curse of Darkness. There are a few “Ora ora ora” references laced throughout various Castlevania equipments and attacks, and Dawn of Sorrow features a fight at a clock tower against an enemy named Zephyr who can stop time and throws knives… Now, where have we heard of someone like that before?

    Speaking of stopped time, the DOTA 2 hero Faceless Void seems to have some JoJo influenced nods to everyone’s favorite vampire. His ultimate ability, Chronosphere, stops time for anyone caught in it but himself for a few seconds, sure seems coincidental, but his model also adopts a similar pose to DIO’s classic WRYYYYYY! pose while casting it. In a recent update to the game, Phantom Assassin got a new splash image featuring her in Jonathan’s pose for her unique cosmetic set, the Bloodroot Guard. In Persona 5, the main character is given a choice to answer the question “What is the name of the phenomenon where the second hand looks like it stops moving?,” with one of the choices being “The World.” And in the fighting game Skullgirls, DIO is referenced numerous times between characters Valentine, Peacock, and Eliza. Valentine can stop time, Peacock drops a steamroller on her foes, and Eliza features an obvious color palette reference to DIO’s classic Part 3 outfit! The game also features Big Band, a character who has a move where he shouts “Tuba Tuba Tuba,” similar to “ora ora ora” or “muda muda muda,” depending on how you hear that in your head. Night Warriors: Darkstalker’s Revenge has a few nods to DIO as well, with a design sketch of Donovan by Takenori Kimoto posing like DIO in one of the art books; more interesting, Donovan, known for his ability to summon various spirits to aid him in battle, also has a sketch where he summons Abbachio’s Moody Jazz!

    In a series already filled with lots of crazy references and homages to other anime and video games, it probably comes as no surprise that the Danganronpa series has numerous JoJo references throughout its titles. Some of these appear in both the games and anime, such as Junko posing as DIO and her penchant for quoting “Muda muda muda,” while others are specific to the games, such as Super Danganronpa 2’s Hanamura saying he can taste if people are lying, Monokuma using a Heaven’s Door like ability, and there’s even a reference to the Bow & Arrow, called the Meteorite Arrowhead. Some other fun references include Mondo, whose hairstyle (and attitude regarding it) seem like they might be related to Josuke, a reference cemented in place when players learn that his biker gang is called Crazy Diamond! These JoJo references likely don’t come as much surprise, considering Naegi’s initial introductory comments about not having a Stand, but the dedication to weaving them into the various games, and in somewhat natural ways, is pretty impressive!

    Speaking of Polnareff, video game designers must have loved him, because aside from poses and thematic references, Polnareff’s mere existence may have had the most influence on game design of the entire JoJo series! Katsuhiro Harada, the director of the Tekken series, directly cites Polnareff as inspiration for series mainstay Paul Phoenix’s iconic hairstyle and first name. Tekken features a few other nods to JoJo, with Jin and Kazuya having gloves similar to Star Platinum’s, and Tekken 7’s newcomer Claudio not only poses like DIO, but can even equip an “Ancient Mask.” In the King of Fighters series, Benimaru Nikaido is another clear homage to Polnareff, again sporting a unique and reminscient hair style and style of dress, and in fact, Benimaru looks so much like Polnareff that developers of the game referred to him internally as “Polnareff!”

    A few other references pop up in King of Fighters, with Leona Heidern’s Earring Bomb 2: Heart Attack special move is an homage to Yoshikage Kira’s Heart Attack. Leona can either wait for the bomb to explode, or detonate it on her own, much like Kira’s Deadly Queen, and Leona’s voice line upon detonation, “You’ve lost in the end,” is similar Kira’s “You’ve lost in death” line. Another King of Fighter character, Mian, has an attack called Rangurenbu that has her shouting “Ariariariariari,” just like Bucciarati! Finally, Street Fighter’s Guile owes his creation to Polnareff, who started as the base model for the character, according to producer Noritaka Funamizu. Ironically, a dev decided to play with Guile’s sprite, and his hair spread to look a bit more like Stroeheim’s, which stuck! The name “Guile” is even a reference to “J. Geil,” Polnareff’s archenemy! Street Fighter has quite a few obvious nods, most notably Rose, who wears a nearly identical outfit to Lisa Lisa, who also hails from Venice.

    There are many more one-off references to be found in various games. Persona Q has a quick segment where the Persona 4 cast pose as various JoJo characters. The original Ninja Gaiden game decorates a stage with Stone Masks and Pillar Men, while Senran Kagura 2 has a few clothing options for Mirai that directly reference Star Platinum and The World. Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey has a reference to the Sword of Anubis with the equipment Cursed Sarai, stating that it is the “Sword of Anubis that drives victims mad,” and an attack ability called Bites the Dust, which inflicts Bomb status on a target who then explodes during their next activation!

  The Touhou Project games have numerous soft references to JoJo sprinkled throughout, with characters such as Remilia and Yuugi making a few references to the series, but the most obvious is Sakuya Izayoi. Sakuya has the ability to stop time, and throw knives! Other references might be quick and hard to miss, such as Yakuza 0’s quick and cheeky nod to the JoJo series: During a fight with a secret boss whose first name is simply “Jo,” Goro Majima (the best boy in Yakuza, by the way), thinks to himself afterwards what that “Jo” guy’s deal was and what a “bizarre adventure” it was to fight him.

  When you move away from video games and music, it’s interesting to see where JoJo references might pop up; after all, many of these mentioned were still developed by Japanese teams and artists, meaning that JoJo likely played a big part in entertaining them growing up or while they worked. But if you were to look towards American comics, you might find some odd homages! Now, one of the most infamous is a comic known as Diesel, which isn’t so much an homage as it was an adaptation (for lack of a better term; it really just takes the entire plot and renames and Americanized people and locations) of the Fool and Iggy storylines of Part 3. The comic was pretty obscure, but got attention in 2016 when the Stardust Crusaders anime hit, and became a source of some odd laughs and memes.

  For an actual homage, X-Man Annual has a page where the Hulk gains some very unique yellow armor, making him look like The World! In the Archie Comics’ Sonic the Hedgehog comics, quite a few little references found their way into the Off Panel section in the back of the book. In issue 270, Sonic and Knuckles face off (with Sonic as Kenshiro and Knuckles dressed as Jotaro) in “manliest anime” challenge, and in the first issue of Sonic Boom’s spin off comic, another Off Panel segment features Knuckles posing like Joseph, complete with a green scarf!

  Western television and web shows have also made a few nods to the series. Adult Swim’s anime inspired Ballmasterz:9009 character Chimpendale strikes Jonathan’s pose at one point. One of the most overt and direct references to the series happens in NBC’s Heroes, with Hiro Nakamura writing in his blog that he wants to “Be like JoJo and go on adventures,” with Part 3 being his favorite. Beyond a few mentions to other JoJo characters in his blog throughout the series run, Hiro’s superpower shares quite a few similarities to that of DIO and Jotaro, as Hiro is able to stop time! Even the grim, dark future of the 41st Millenium of Warhammer 40,000 isn’t safe from JoJo references, as the popular parody series If the Emperor Had a Text to Speech Device by Bruva Alfabusa on Youtube features three characters called the “The Fabulous Custodes,” who look suspiciously like a few half-naked superhumans!

    It seems that JoJo fever is worldwide, with creators from all over the world, in various media and genres, have all worked in ways to pay respect to Hirohiko Araki’s unique and wonderful series. As JoJo's Bizarre Adventure continue through Part 5 and gain more and more followers, we can only assume that these fun nods to Araki’s world will continue; we even left a few off because they’d spoil some of the fun of Part 5, so consider this just a small taste of the influence Araki has had. So while you’re enjoying the new season of JoJo, keep your eyes peeled for other references in shows you’re watching, games you’re playing, and even music you’re listening to; you never know where a JoJo reference might pop-up!

Black Panther Easter Eggs And References

Instead of doing a Six Sentence Sunday this week, I thought I’d finally get around to writing up and sharing some Easter eggs and references from Black Panther. I’ve now seen the movie twice, so I think I’ve got a fair amount, but I’m also sure there are going to be things I missed.

If you haven’t yet seen this movie, there are spoilers in my list! So. Many. Spoilers. You have been warned.

I’m not going to give you everyone’s comic book history and what’s been changed for each character for the movie, but what I will say is that I think this is one of the few MCU movies where every single named character exists in the comics, which is pretty fantastic.

The Marvel Comic flip.

Before the Marvel characters and logo appear on screen, the studio still uses the flipping comic book pages to give you a little nod to their history. Usually, the images are the same for the MCU with the Avengers you see across Phase 1. This time, if you blink you might miss it, there’s a Black Panther symbol in those pages.

The history of Wakanda.

The movie’s opening has a father telling his son (you might have that it was T’Challa getting the story when the movie first opened, but that’s definitely Erik being told the story by his father) the story of vibranium landing in the middle of Africa, tribes separating, and Wakanda being built around the vibranium mound. He also details the lineage of Black Panthers. All that is almost exactly out of the comics. The MCU often changes bits and pieces of the story, like it does for T’Challa’s father dying when he’s an adult instead of a boy, but this stunning set up is almost exactly the same.

Oakland, 1992.

Oakland happened to be where director Ryan Coogler grew up and it’s also where the Black Panther political movement was born in the 60s - shortly after the comic book character made his debut. I’m not sure if 1992 is a significant year for him because it’s not for Black Panther. The previous comic book series ended in 1991 and another volume wasn’t published until 1998. It was considered a particular “bloody” year by local papers though. There were 167 known murders that occurred in Oakland that year, which apparently was a record at the time. Since that’s particularly dark, let’s also note that the Oakland Athletics (that’s baseball, folks), finished first in the American League West that year. (When the movie returns to Oakland at the end, that’s also a nod to Coogler’s real life dream: to be able to give back to the community that raised him. T’Challa puts a Wakandan Outreach program in place. Coogler spoke in some of his very first interviews about wanting to bring his movies to Oakland, to film there, to generate revenue for the city, to work with kids that live there in arts programs.)

Public Enemy.

One of the posters on the wall of the Oakland apartment is for Public Enemy, which seems appropriate for a guy in 90s Oakland who wants to bring power back to his people.

The MCU timeline.

The movie references it being a week since the UN conference and T’Chaka’s death, so it’s set right after the events of Captain America: Civil War, putting it right before Spider-Man: Homecoming and Doctor Strange, but also possible happening during the last few episodes of Agents of SHIELD’s third season. So, don’t expect a crossover there.

Killmonger’s mask.

In addition to being inspired by real life ceremonial masks worn by the Igbo, the mask also draws on comic book inspiration. Killmonger wears a mask very similar to the one in the movie during his first confrontation with T’Challa in the comics.

Killmonger’s girlfriend.

So, this might not have been intentional, and this might not even really be an Easter egg, but one relationship long time comic book readers will remember is that of Killmonger and Madam Slay. Madam Slay had trained leopards (and we do see leopard-like spots in Killmonger’s costume later), and she was his right hand for a few issues when Black Panther stories were being told as part of Jungle Action comics. She had a thing for knives and wanted to help Killmonger kill T’Challa. Of course, she was also Wakandan, so maybe the woman seen in the movie isn’t her.

Klaue’s arm.

The cannon in Klaue’s arm is inspired by the comic book design. He has a “sonic cannon” in his arm in the comics, which gets something of a shoutout when he says it’s sonic mining equipment that was used to give him the arm in the movie.

Shuri’s buns.

When T’Challa meets his family off the plane, Shuri’s hair is in a couple of buns. That’s your Star Wars reference as it was meant as an homage to another princess in a galaxy far, far, away. Letitia Wright confirmed the nod in an interview.

“What are thoooose?”

I hear this is a nod to a famous vine. LOL Okay, I have to admit that I was never into vine, but everyone in the theater under 30 found this hilarious. I found it more adorable that Shuri bases her shoe design on Back to the Future. But hey, we all find different things funny.

Mount Bashenga.

Shuri’s lab is inside a mountain named for the first known king of Wakanda that becomes Black Panther. He’s even named in the opening sequence of a bed time story.

M’Baku makes a move toward Shuri.

During the challenge, as M’Baku talks about the things he disagrees with in Wakanda, one of them is “a child” being in charge of the technology. In the comics, M’Baku specifically wants to get rid of all of the futuristic tech in Wakanda. He also, at one point, kidnaps Shuri. So, that brief moment struck me as a nod to that.

So, I’ll also note here that M’Baku is a big departure from the comics, but a lot of things were kept to provide a nod to the source material. Like Nakia calling him the “Great Gorilla” when she meets him because the villain name Man-Ape is pretty racist, no? Her term is more a sign of respect. The skin he wears over his shoulders? A nod to him killing a White Gorilla in the comics in a ritual that gives him the strength and stamina of the animal.

(Also, side note: the movie cut, but set design kept, the Jabari tribe loving the wood from a sacred tree in the mountains and using that to build their homes with. It’s in direct contrast with the high tech Vibranium. Winston Duke also worked with a dialect coach so his rhythms would be closer to different Nigerian dialects instead of South African dialects to differentiate himself from the rest of the main cast, setting the Jabari apart from the rest of Wakanda. It was also his idea to do the barking/grunting sounds as a nod to the comic book source material, but to give the Jabari a way to make an entrance and shut people up.

Okoye complains about that wig.

Honestly, this only struck me because Danai Gurira has to wear a massive wig for her role as Michonne on The Walking Dead. I know she’s spoken at length about loving that role, but I immediately thought her character’s hatred for wigs was a nod to the fact that she spends so much of the year in one.

The Pan African flag.

The stripes of the Pan African flag are green, black, and red, so when Nakia, T’Challa, and Okoye walk into the underground gambling ring in Korea and stand at the guardrail, you’re seeing that flag brought to life. (And for those who think that’s reaching for symbolism, Ryan Coogler confirmed in an interview that was the intention of the costuming decisions in that scene.)

Stan Lee’s cameo.

We all recognize Stan Lee by now, but in case you missed him, he’s one of the gamblers. He talks to Agent Ross and takes T’Challa’s winnings when he leaves them behind.

“Every breath you take is mercy from me.”

T’Challa says this line to Klaue in the movie, but in the comics, he said it to someone else. He said it to Namor following the arrival of Thanos in Wakanda. T’Challa and Namor have a complicated frenemy-ship, we’ll say. I kind of hope Namor (since the rights are back with Marvel) gets to make his debut in a Black Panther movie.

Vibranium from Sokovia.

When Agent Ross and T’Challa chat in the casino, Ross mentions the guy he’s dealing with also having been traced to the events in Sokovia. So, just in case you needed another big flashing sign for an MCU connection, there you go.

The story of El Dorado.

Klaue tells the story of a Golden City, and how people searched for it in South America. In addition to trying the movie to the legend of El Dorado, it’s also a nod to the capital city of Wakanda in the comics, called the Golden City. It’s where the royal family lives and where most of the activity takes place in the comics.

Another broken white boy.

When Shuri makes the comment that there’s another broken white boy for them to fix (after the CIA agent is brought in to have his spine repaired), I actually didn’t think about the fact that Bucky Barnes was cryogenically frozen in Wakanda for safe keeping, though I’m sure plenty others did, but of Hunter, T’Challa and Shuri’s adopted brother. T’Chaka saved the boy after his parents died in a plane crash over Wakanda and raised them with his children. Hunter grew to be jealous of T’Challa and the leader of the War Dogs. He was a sometimes enemy of his adopted brother. Of course, the post-credit scene makes it clear that Bucky is standing in for Hunter since the kids even call him by Hunter’s comic book name, “White Wolf,” even if the timeline doesn’t quite add up.

The influence of African cultures.

Yes, Black Panther is a comic book movie, but Black Panther also takes a whole lot of inspiration from different African cultures. For example, the Dora Milaje are inspired by the Dahomey Amazons, an all female military group that essentially died out after the mid twentieth century. The costuming, the body modification, the language, and even the hairstyles in the movie are all rooted in different African cultures. This twitter thread does an amazing job at explaining so much of what you see in the movie.

It’s also worth noting that you won’t see a Wakandan character in the movie with relaxed hair. Why? The country was never colonized. I believe it was Lupita Nyong'o who explained in interviews that the idea of relaxing kinky hair was brought about by colonizers shaming Africans for their looks. Because Wakanda has never been colonized, the residents have pride in something as simple as natural hair.

War Dog assignments.

The “War Dogs” are referenced several times, but outside of Nakia being called a spy, there’s not a whole of information about them. So, the term War Dog is actually in reference to the Hatut Zeraze, which are the “secret police” in Wakanda in the comics. T’Challa actually disbands them when he becomes King because he doesn’t like the idea of sending out people to assassinate others around the world, which is one of their jobs. The movie appears to have made them literal spies instead of assassins.

Shuri’s gauntlets.

I’m sure a lot of people noticed that she built her gauntlets to resemble the heads of panthers. While that’s obviously a nod to the Black Panther being Wakanda’s hero, it’s likely also a nod to Shuri becoming the Black Panther in the comics. She takes her brother’s place when he’s gravely ill and she also becomes the Queen her country needs.

Over the waterfall.

The moment where Killmonger tosses T’Challa over the edge of the cliff? Taken exactly from the comics. T’Challa survives that fall as well, though he doesn’t get help from M’Baku in the comics since they were enemies as well there.

War Dog cities.

When Killmonger and W’Kabi discuss which War Dogs have responded to his plans to take over the world, they are in very specific cities. New York, London, and Hong Kong are mentioned. Those also happen to be the cities that house Sanctum Santorums in the Doctor Strange movie, which means they’re hot spots for magic, lines between realms, etc. (Though this could be a coincidence as they’re also well known and well populated cities that world wide audiences would recognize.)

Killmonger’s Black Panther suit.

I already mentions that he gets leopard-like spots on it, which could serve as a nod to Madam Slay’s leopards, but there’s more. Black Leopard was the name used for Black Panther briefly in the comics to distance the character from any politics. Killmonger also had a sidekick in the form of a leopard he called Preyy. The gold tones in his costume - and particularly the look of the necklace - are a direct callback to what the actual Black Panther suit most often looks like in the comics as well.

T’Challa wrestles a rhino.

The scene where Black Panther takes down a rhino? Pretty much exactly out of the comics. In his very first comic book run in Jungle Action comics - the run is actually called Marvel’s first graphic novel - he had to wrestle a rhino to the ground in the same way.

Alex R. Hibbert.

The young actor, famous now for his role in Moonlight, gets a cameo at the end of the movie as the little boy who chats with T’Challa about his ship. Ryan Coogler is a big fan of Moonlight and has said that the director actual gave him a lot of support in his career. Hibbert gets the last official line in the movie, though there is a mid credits scene and a post credits scene.

"And making her way to the center of the ring next! You may know her for her world-famous campfire kit, sold in a store near you! Or perhaps you've heard of the deadly "Westfall Fires", of which it was said she burnt down an entire farm with a single match! All we know is, the woman has a way with flames! Penny the Pyro!"

Her eye twitched. It did that a lot lately, she had noticed. Bringing her hand forward, she let loose the dagger she had readied, watching it fly through the air and bury itself into a knot in a far off tree. Her lips tugged back into a sick smirk. Twitching eyes apparently didn't mess with her aim. Pulling another dagger from her belt she repeated the feat, again and again, until there were no more daggers to toss.

Skulking off deeper into the thicket of trees she felt the constant motion of her eye lessen. At this point she swore it was proximity to the big top that caused it. Which made it unavoidable. Letting out a gravely sigh, she pried the knives out of the tree, one by one slotting them back into their appropriate spot. There was at least twenty minutes. No. Thirty minutes. Penny would get an encore, because Penny always got an encore, especially at this late night shows.

Unsurprisingly, people loved seeing things catch fire. Lighting up the night was Penny's talent, made all the better by the good showmanship that the director had come up with for her. Most of it was just natural ideas. Cut all of the lights for the arena when she was performing to emphasize her little tricks. Add in some sparklers, some flare. Some actual flares helped too. It was nothing that a skilled fire mage couldn't do, but it was still a good watch.

Fewer people were craving for more of her little show. Tossing knives into a wooden target, no matter the distance, and no matter how much flair she gave it, never seemed to keep the audiences' attention. There had been a time when she had gotten a few calls back to the stage, but when her assistant started getting concerned about how close she was tossing her blades that all went out the window. No one else signed up after that.

With the final blade tucked away, her gaze began straying back to the tent. A small flicker caught it before it could fully return to the brightly covered tarp though. Leaning to her left she peered beyond the tree, eyes narrowing as she found the source of the flickering. Off and away from her target practice tree was a small fire, and beyond that, a log with two individuals housed on it. Her lips curled into a cruel grin as she started making her way through the trees, pressing herself close to keep in their shadows.

Pausing behind a thicker tree, she forced herself to wait a few moments before craning her head out to stare. She couldn't help but assume that her beady yellow eyes stood out in stark contrast to the dark forest, but even if that were the case the pair on the log didn't take note of her. That was due in no small part to the fact that they were far more concerned with each other, with their lips locked. Elves. Of the blood variety, with their pale skin and thin features. If they had their eyes open, she was sure that they would hold the usual green glow too. They looked young, as much as an elf could look young. Maybe it was their movements, the sense of inexperience that they had. Even still, they were probably a good few decades older than her. Her eyes rolled at the idea, kids who were old enough to be her grandparents.

A terrible thought crossed through her mind. One she couldn't pass up following. She gave them a moment to cease with their little escapade, before crawling out ever so slightly from behind the tree. Not enough to be seen, but enough to have a proper shot. She palmed one of her blades, slowly turned it until her fingers were resting on the blade instead of the hilt. With a small flick of the wrist, she tossed the thing, and watched it dig its way into the log with a satisfying 'thud'.

It took a few seconds for the noise to fully register. Once it had she had to fight off laughing, to keep her position a secret. The girl's eyes were wide as they could be, little green spots looking everywhere for the source of the noise. His eyes were narrower, searching for an attacker. He brought her closer to him, and she certainly didn't seem to oppose having a defender. Maybe she was being helpful after all.

Switching to the other side of the tree she repeated the process, slinging another dagger into the log, this time on his side. He seemed to catch on much quicker than she had, eyes shooting down to the new found addition to their seat. Her eyes soon followed his, and soon enough she was in a complete and utter panic. Increased breathing, small shrieks of terror, inconsistent gibberish. The whole deal. When she found the first dagger, still sticking out of her side of the log, she went positively ballistic. Her arms flailed about, she scratched at him in a panic, and not long after she ran off, blue dress flying in the breeze as she made her way back to the main fairgrounds.

The remaining kid stood his ground, dropping into a fighting stance and circling the campfire. Despite looking tough, she could tell he was anything but. His stance said he was ready to fight, but his hands claimed that he was in the middle of an earthquake with how much they were shaking. Even his voice couldn't keep steady with all of his shivering.

"W-Wh-Who's out there!?"

With all of the screaming she was starting to get worried that one of the other staff members might find their way out here and put an end to her little bit of fun. But thus far no one had come, which meant that she got to keep playing.

She dropped into a crouch, and slowly re-positioned herself behind another tree. Now sitting off to his right, she raised her voice just enough for it to bounce around, but not so much that it could be placed.

"Just a few monsters creeping about the woods."

He swiveled about again, trying to pin her down to no avail. His eyes shot around for something, and soon enough he had picked up a stick from the ground, holding it like one would a sword. Someone very inexperienced with a sword. Drawing another knife, she made sure to hold her shot off until his hands were at a proper angle. Letting it loose, she watched with glee as the thing sliced right through his stick, splitting it into two much shorter pieces.

Now disarmed, there was nothing even resembling calm about his demeanor. His circling became much faster, and his gaze shot every which way in an attempt to place the 'monsters'. A perfect time for an entrance.

She waited until his back was turned towards her before tiptoeing away from her previous hiding spot. With how much he was moving, she was forced to circle right along with him. The moment he was within her reach, she brought a single finger up to tap him on the shoulder, muttering a soft, gravely "Boo."

A loud scream filled the woods as he stumbled forward, and skittered across the ground. Eventually he hit the log head first and dropped right down into the dirt. For a moment she swore that he was dead. So much so that she was already planning on how she was going to bury the body. But he did begin moving again, and flipped over onto his back to stare at her, eyes bugging out again once he recalled his situation.

Making her way around the campfire, she started pulling the knives from their resting places. She could feel his eyes burrowing into the back of her head, but he didn't move. After putting everything back in its place, she turned, looking down on him, smirk hidden behind her hood.

"What do you want?"

It was the most obvious question, she supposed. Probably the one she would be asking. Pointing from him back to the fairgrounds, she let out a short hiss, "Not allowed out here. Especially not this late at night. It's a liability, and we don't want the bad press even if ya signed the waiver."

That was probably a lie. She had never read the waiver, so it was entirely possible that somewhere in it was a section pertaining to the woods. That was assuming that people still even had to sign the waiver. Or if the waiver had ever existed. She just knew that at some point she had heard about a waiver, and that it was probably fairly hard to make sure to have copies in both Common and Orcish, on top of getting each guest to sign one.

His eyes narrowed, "Are you joking? You attempt to kill people who break the rules?"

She grinned even wider, nodding, "Well see it this way." She crouched close to him, hands resting on her knees, "Have you ever met anybody who broke the Fair's rules?"

That prompted a long thinking session. She could imagine him going through each encounter with someone that involved the fair. Either at the fair, or that mentioned the fair. Then it would be a case of recalling whether or not those he had spoken with talked about breaking rules. The conclusion he came to must not have been overly positive, "No."

Her left hand came up to point a lone finger at him, "Exactly."

He stared at her finger, probably half tempted to shove it away. But he didn't. Instead he scooted even back further. Any further looks were those of a defeated child. Soon enough he was out of sight, probably off to find wherever his date was probably crying. She took his previous seat, positively beaming at her success.

"Having fun?"

All of the laughter that she had been building up was allowed to slip for a moment. She chuckled and nodded as her head spun towards the new voice. She stopped the moment she met eyes with the assistants. His attire was more 'usual' compared to the rest of them. A tailored suit that he kept crisp, in spite of the constant dirt that was kicked up around the fairgrounds.

Despite the sudden chill she felt, she couldn't help but grin, "Shoulda seen the look on his face."

"I did see it," the human muttered, tucking his hands into his pockets, "And I was hoping that we weren't going to have this problem again."

She tossed a hand at him, "Oh please Tucker. Let a girl have her fun."

His eyes rolled back into his head. Reaching into his breast pocket he produced a sheet of paper, and offered it out to her. She stared at it, waiting to take it until she was certain that there was no other option. He waited a few moments, probably hoping that she would actually read the damned thing while he was present, but she refused to give him the benefit.

Sighing, he reached into his pocket once more to pull out a lighter and a cigar. Tucking the latter between his lips, he brought the lighter in close, flicking it a few times before he could take a pull. When she still refused to read it, he shook his head, turned on his heel, and began making his way toward the tents.

"You're on in five."

"I know," she lied.

Glancing at the paper, she frowned. When she was finished with it, she crumpled the thing up and tossed it into the fire. She knew this was coming. It was just that type of season. At the very least she wasn't getting suspended again. Not that that made getting laid off any easier.

Some bio info about Collins, via Wikipedia: Dame Joan Henrietta Collins, DBE (b. 23 May 1933) is an English actress, author and columnist. Born in Paddington, west London, and brought up in Maida Vale, Collins grew up during the Second World War. After making her stage debut in "A Doll’s House" at the age of nine, she trained as an actress at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. She then signed an exclusive contract with the Rank Organisation and appeared in various British films.   At the age of 22, Collins headed to Hollywood and landed sultry roles in several popular films, including "The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing" (1955) and "Rally Round the Flag, Boys!" (1958). While she continued to make films in the US and the UK throughout the 1960s, she also guest starred in an episode of Star Trek in 1967 named "The City on the Edge of Forever", as Edith Keeler. Her career languished in the 1970s, when she appeared in a number of horror flicks. Near the end of the decade, she starred in two softcore pornographic films based on best-selling novels by her younger sister Jackie Collins: "The Stud" (1978) and its sequel "The Bitch" (1979).   She began appearing on stage, playing the title role in the 1980 British revival of "The Last of Mrs. Cheyney," and later had a lead role in the 1990 revival of Noël Coward’s "Private Lives." In 1981, she landed the role of Alexis Carrington Colby, the vengeful ex-wife of John Forsythe’s character, in the 1980s television soap opera "Dynasty," winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in 1982; she is credited for the success around "Dynasty," which was the most-watched television show in the US during the 1984-85 broadcast season. Collins also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1983 for career achievement. In 2015, Collins was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II for services to charity.

Trivia from this episode, via IMDb: Harlan Ellison’s original script was extensively rewritten by D.C. Fontana at Gene Roddenberry’s behest. Ellison was very unhappy about this, even though the episode won numerous awards (including Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation) and is regarded as one of the classics. Gene L. Coon is mainly responsible for the small comical elements of the story, including the famous "rice picker" scene, which Harlan Ellison reportedly hated.   Widely considered by both fans and critics to be the best episode of the series and is listed as one of the "Ten Essential Episodes" of Star Trek (1966) in the 2008 reference book "Star Trek 101," by Paula M. Block and Terry J. Erdmann.   This was the most expensive episode produced during the first season, with a budget of $245,316, and also the most expensive episode of the entire series, except the two pilots. The average cost of a first season episode was around $190,000. Also, production went one and half days over schedule, resulting in eight shooting days instead of the usual six.   Desilu Stage 11, usually not a Star Trek (1966) stage, was used for filming the mission interiors. The stage was occupied by My Three Sons (1960) previously, but as that series was moved to another location, it became available for the crew to film. Director Joseph Pevney couldn’t complete all scenes scheduled to be filmed at 40 Acres on schedule. However, the backlot was already booked for filming by The Andy Griffith Show (1960), so the arrival of McCoy to the past and Rodent’s death had to be filmed on a studio alleyway behind Desilu Stage 10.   One of only two times in the original series a "curse word" is heard, when Kirk says, "Let’s get the hell out of here" at the very end. The second is in Star Trek: The Doomsday Machine (1967), when Kirk sees the Enterprise being drawn into combat, he says; "[What] the hell’s going on?".   When William Shatner and Joan Collins are walking together on the street, they pass in front of a shop with the name Floyd’s Barber Shop clearly painted on the window. This is the same Floyd’s Barber Shop which is often seen on The Andy Griffith Show (1960), adjacent to the sheriff’s office, in the town of Mayberry.   The footage seen through the time portal is, for the most part, lifted from old Paramount films.   The alley in which Kirk steals the clothing from the fire-escape is the same alley seen in Star Trek: Miri (1966), in which Spock and the guards have debris dumped on them by the children.   Spock refers to the technology of the time as "stone knives and bearskin". The same phrase would be later used by Captain Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager: Future’s End (1996).   In one scene in this episode, a poster can be seen advertising a boxing event at Madison Square Garden featuring "Kid McCook" vs. "Mike Mason". For Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Past Tense: Part II (1995), scenic artists Doug Drexler and Michael Okuda created a near replica of this boxing poster for a scene set in 1930 San Francisco; the DS9 poster features the same boxers, and says that it is "their first rematch since Madison Square Garden".   With regards to this episode, Joan Collins has stated, "To this day, people still want to talk about that episode – some remember me for that more than anything else I’ve done. I am amazed at the enduring popularity of Star Trek and particularly of that episode." Collins adds, "At the time, none of us would have predicted the longevity of the show. I couldn’t be more pleased – or more honoured – to be part of Star Trek history." Ms. Collins’ memory of her Trek experience seems hazy, however. In her 1985 autobiography, "Past Imperfect" (p. 248), she makes a few errors regarding the episode: for example, in addition to the common mistake of referring to Mr. Spock as Dr. Spock, she identifies her character as Edith Cleaver instead of Edith Keeler, and she also claims that Spock, not Kirk, allowed her character to be killed – a plot point that was not in the version of the script that was actually shot. Most significantly, she claims Edith tried to "prove to the world that Hitler was a nice guy."   Double-exposures allowed Kirk and Spock to leap out of brick walls in this episode.   The Guardian of Forever was designed by Art Director Rolland M. Brooks. Normally, set design was the purview of his colleague Matthew Jeffreys, but due to illness, Brooks took over his chores for the Guardian. When Jefferies returned to his duties and saw the donut-shaped set piece for the first time, he reportedly exclaimed, "What the hell is this?!", according to D.C. Fontana. Special effects artist Jim Rugg was responsible for the light effects for the Guardian.   When asked in February 26, 1992 interview whether the makers of this episode consciously intended it to have the contemporaneous anti-Vietnam-war movement as subtext, associate producer Robert H. Justman replied, "Of course we did."   This is the first mention of Nazi Germany in Star Trek. A race which adopted a Nazi-style regime also appears in Star Trek: Patterns of Force (1968). The theme is reprised in later shows: on Star Trek: Voyager: The Killing Game (1998) and Star Trek: Voyager: The Killing Game: Part II (1998), where Hirogen take over USS Voyager and use the holodeck to recreate Nazi Germany, and then in Star Trek: Enterprise: Zero Hour (2004), and Star Trek: Enterprise: Storm Front (2004) and Star Trek: Enterprise: Storm Front (2004), when agents from the Temporal Cold War send Captain Archer and the Enterprise NX-01 back to the Second World War.
