this is random but I’ve noticed you’ve talked before about the explanations for social phenomena regarding men’s thinking and behavior being reduced to “it’s evolution!” reductive knee-jerks so I’m wondering what do you think about evolutionary psychology and the “truths” it usually spews about male vs female behavior?
I only read very little about evopsych tbh, usually it*s just very sexist stereotypes like…. Idk that women are born liking the color pink more and they try to justify that with some complete bonkers “evolutionary” reason for that stereotype to exist like in this example “women are born liking pink bc babys ae pink and they*re drawn to babys”
which is obviously completely false bc
1) not all babys are “pink” bc most people are not white + whiteness is a pretty recent development from an evolutionary standpoint, so I doubt that we already developed instinctual behaviour in reaction to that
2) women like pink has been around for like… 100 years? before pink was a boys color so the claim that there must be some evolutionary explanation for women liking the color pink is absolutely completely idiotic to begin with
I mean I just made up this example and the probable evopsych explanations, but I*m pretty sure there*s someone out there actually believing this shit bc they write like this a lot.
they usually take modern stereotypes, sometimes even exclusive to certain culture and paint it as an universal trait intristic to all people on earth.
BUT I do believe that there are sexually dimorphic behaviours, it*s well documented in animals and oftentimes has neurobiological backup (for example brain regions processing a certain behaviour are only present in one sex, the other sex lacking these parts isn*t able to perform the behaviour) after all I*m a bio student and very interested in behaviour, might even want to specialize in it. obviously the differences vary from species to species, and tbh I feel like my knowledge on humans and our relatives is pretty lacking, tho afaik there isn*t much dimorphism in our brains.
also I*m kinda vary of studys on human behavioural dimorhpism tbh, bc very often it*s just evopsych. like I can*t even comprehend how a respectable scientist who*s trying to examine some behaviour would choose something that is a recent phenomenon and not even once ask himself “wait was this behaviour even expressed in pehistoric humans? was this behaviour even a thing just a 100 years ago??? do other people in other parts of the world even behave like this??” like there*s a shit ton of studys like that around and it*s beyond mo how shit like that gets published
tldr: I think evopsych is bunk and I also think that a lot of “legitimate” research into behavioural dimorphism in humans is bunk, too, bc a lot of scientists are just trying to confirm their misogynist and androphilic biases and you pretty much can confirm anything you set your mind on with the right experimental design or rather when your study is narrow and ignorant enough
edit: but I also think that male supremacy had to come from somewhere, like men did that on their own, someone did that in the past and it spread like wildfire, no other (or not enough) men were like “hey dude it*s fucked up how we*re enslaving women and treating them like cattle, let*s just not” instead it spread all other the world.so yeah it kinda looks like all men have to be somewhat internally fucked up to let shit like this happen in the first place.
it*s a complicated topic and I have conflicting feelings abt this tbh!
