The fact that the government of the state/territory with the highest indigenous population (percentage wise), high truancy rates and high Centrelink participant rates is now fining and threatening to have those fines taken out of parent's Centrelink payments if their kids truant really does not sit well with me and breaks my heart as someone whose mother had to deal with Centrelink cutting her payment frequently over my sister's truancy back when we were in school. Like the opposition is right to say they don't have the authority to enforce it without the federal government's support, but the fact that they are even trying is horrific.
#auspol#ntpol#let me make it clear that 1. I am white and 2. this is of course not saying that only indigenous or poor kids skip school. The point I#am making here is that we have a state with a high indigenous and poverty rate being threatened by a well off woman full well#knowing that these people are more likely to face consequences for crimes (such as not paying fines)#in a country that has a 'history' (it's still happening) of a stolen generation of indigenous + poor kids being taken away from their#parents because they didn't obey the white culture to a t. Not to mention the research we have that helping these families would#have better results than punishing them. And as someone who has been through that all it is really upsetting
