An Anomalocaris canadensis hunts down a trio of Isoxys acutangulus 510 million years ago out in the open ocean of what is now the Burgess Shale of Alberta, Canada. The 37-cm-long radiodont was once thought to have glided over the seafloor and used its raptorial appendages to crack open the shells of small trilobites, but since 2023 it is now thought to have been an early example of a pelagic pursuit predator.

"Jawless Jaunt" Sacabambaspis Ordovician, 460 million years ago, Anzaldo Formation (Bolivia) Trying a new form of art - pixel art this time! Not perfect, given it's very much a first stab - just as these fishies are a sorta first stab at bony vertebrate life. Jawless, these memeable friends lived by sucking up worms and shit. "Primitive" as they may be anatomically, such fish weren't necessarily dumb! Lots of animals we overlook can be surprisingly intelligent. This male is digging a display in the sand to attract a female, much like modern pufferfish, even lining it with bivalves. It seems to be working. This is an entry in my Perspectives series! Welcome back to Trilobite Tuesday! Every trilobite fossil tells a story, including this large 6.7-in- (17-cm-) long Ectinaspis. Notice the coral branch on the upper-left corner?
