JOHN: how did it go??

ROXY: it went ok

JOHN: yeah?

JOHN: what happened??

ROXY: oh u know

ROXY: ventured to spooky subterranean lair 4 a bit of cathartic and life altering monster realtalk

JOHN: ok, that is a funny way of putting it, but yeah, me too!

ROXY: yup i figured ur monster quest happened

ROXY: i mean once the gross black shit disappeared and the wind started blowing like a motherfucker

JOHN: what did ur monster say?

JOHN: i mean your.

ROXY: hey maybe we shoud try to be more respectful abt our god monsters...

ROXY: her names nix!

JOHN: right...

JOHN: what did nix say?

JOHN: did she speak in the weird babbley language that you could still understand somehow, even though it made no sense?

ROXY: fuck yes

ROXY: was downright incomprehensible in the most mysteriously understandable way

JOHN: ha ha.

ROXY: she told me this riddle thing

ROXY: that basically spread it all out for me

ROXY: like what my options were and what would happen if i did the options and like the metaphysical and moral consequences of doing those options

JOHN: yeah.

JOHN: typheus pretty much did the same thing with me.

JOHN: typheus was the name of my snake monster, by the way.

ROXY: oooh u had a snake monster?

JOHN: yes, he was awesome.

JOHN: so, did nix give you some sort of challenge to overcome, which by doing so, you could get in touch with your powers?

ROXY: uh

JOHN: which enabled you to appear here, by doing like this incredible voidey thing, that let you phase out of existence, and magically appear with me in this weird plane of reality?

ROXY: lol no

ROXY: she p much just told me to fly to your planet

ROXY: so i did

JOHN: huh.

JOHN: you mean, like...

JOHN: you just... wrapped up your conversation with her. left her lair...

JOHN: and then flew to lowas?

ROXY: yes

JOHN: ohh... kay?

ROXY: lmfao

ROXY: i know right, wow wat a quest!

ROXY: but when u think about it it was the totes obvious thing to do

ROXY: i didnt know it at the time but you were gonna make your whole planet disappear

ROXY: so if i wanted to keep persisting thru your history altering hijinks then all i really had to do was uh

ROXY: come along for the ride

ROXY: no monsterly NITE MAGICS needed!

JOHN: yeah, that makes sense.

ROXY: there were stipulations though

ROXY: mad stips if u will, vis a vis buttloads of opaque goddess riddles

JOHN: right. you mean the "choice" thing?

ROXY: yes

JOHN: what were the mad stips?

ROXY: she said

ROXY: keep in mind i am paraphrasing

ROXY: if paraphrasing is even a thing you can do with stuff said in unfathomable monster jargon

ROXY: that either i could stay behind and vanish into nothingness forever, and everyone in the new reality would inherit all the bigtime responsibilities, including a version of myself who had no memory of any of this and never experienced all the loss and sadness i just went through

ROXY: or

ROXY: i could go with you

ROXY: but in doing so, everyone i loved would know that loss instead

ROXY: w/e that means......

JOHN: yeah!

JOHN: typheus gave me almost the exact same sort of choice

JOHN: something about other people feeling the loss i felt, if i accepted his challenge.

JOHN: which i'm sure is probably... not good?

JOHN: but, i mean, what else was i going to do?

JOHN: i couldn't just let things stay the way they were.

ROXY: yes exactly

ROXY: her caveat sounded ominous as shit

ROXY: but

ROXY: there was somethin that didnt sit well with me about doing nothing

ROXY: accepting her terms just felt right u know?

JOHN: yes.

ROXY: sooo

ROXY: here i am

JOHN: yes!

ROXY: :)

JOHN: i'm glad it worked out like this.

JOHN: i was fully prepared to do this alone... to hop around and change things in whatever way.

JOHN: and i would get to see my friends again, even if they don't remember all the same stuff i do.

JOHN: which was a lonely feeling, if that makes sense?

JOHN: but now i'll have someone else to remember the way things originally went.

ROXY: word

JOHN: yes. word indeed.

ROXY: but i know what you mean

ROXY: its nice to have uh

ROXY: like a witness i guess?

ROXY: someone to authenticate the rough shit u went through

ROXY: even if we never end up talkin about it again

ROXY: the fact that at least SOMEONE else knows

ROXY: makes it feel like it didnt all mean

ROXY: nothing?

JOHN: right.

ROXY: because even if it all gets erased and put back all better

ROXY: i dont think the stuff we went through and the feelings we had meant nothing

ROXY: imo the feelings themselves

ROXY: and the way they shaped us

ROXY: that all means...

ROXY: somethin

JOHN: ...

ROXY: hahaha forget it

JOHN: and anyway, if nothing else, everything that happened brought us here.

JOHN: the stuff we're about to do, whatever it is, wouldn't be possible otherwise.

JOHN: and that feels pretty important, if you ask me!

Lock Tender's House and Inn

7104 Canal Rd.

Valley View, OH

It's fun to speculate about the colorful past of the little white house at the Ohio and Erie Canal's Lock 38 in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It had a wild reputation during the canal's heyday, but these days, it is a favorite stop for information about the park. The white-frame building itself dates from the 1820s, includes an 1853 addition, and housed a tavern, a general store, and a home over the years according to a marker in front of the building. The marker also explains that the house had a "colorful reputation", earning it the nickname of "Hell's Half Acre." It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 11, 1979.

The site was acquired and restored by the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in 1982. The park’s service page also notes that the building was once a dance hall as well. The building's proximity to Lock 38 has led many people to believe the lock tender lived there. That conclusion seems to make some sense as the lock sits right in front of the house, but there is no record of the lock masters ever living there. Today, it is a small on-site museum. The museum photos, videos, and other displays tell the story of 12,000 years of history in the valley, the history of the canal, and life in the area during the waterway's heyday as a major shipping and transportation route.

Our First AIO Fanfiction

A Number, Not a Name

“A couple of months after Jason joins the NSA he is finally assigned his first field mission. Eager to prove himself not only to Donovan, but also to his new partner Tasha Forbes, Jason throws himself completely into the case. However, he soon finds himself caught in a complex web of treachery, deceit, and betrayal which will force him to answer a difficult question - who can he trust?”

Chapter 1: When Duty Calls

Jason sat at his desk quickly typing up an intelligence report which was soon due to be reviewed by the agency’s leading executives. The typical office sounds of phones ringing, clattering keyboards, and co-workers chatting in their small cubicles echoing in the background. This had been his daily routine for the last couple of months ever since he had joined the agency: writing documents of the intelligence gathered on the various groups and people the agency was actively monitoring. He was almost finished with the nearly 200-page government document when he heard a familiar voice call out his name from behind him, “Agent Whittaker.”

Jason immediately spun his chair around and his eyes came to rest on Deputy Director Donovan’s secretary, Ms. Connors. She continued, her voice in a formal tone “Director Donovan would like to see you now in his office.”

“Oh, of course.”

He stood up from his chair and followed Ms. Connors down a winding aisle lined with rows of cubicles on both sides, through a doorway which led into a corner office, and past Ms. Connors desk until they finally arrived at the door which led into Donovan’s private office. Ms. Connors then knocked.

“Come in” came an older man’s voice with a Scottish accent from the other side of the large oak door. Ms. Connors opened the door and entered the room.

“Director Donovan, Agent Whittaker is here sir.”

“Good, send him in.”

She then exited the room and motioned for Jason to enter. “Director Donovan will see you now.”

“Thank you.” Jason entered the room and Ms. Connors closed the door behind him leaving the two men alone to talk.

“You wanted to see me, sir,” Jason said somewhat nervously, his eyes fixed on the rather intimidating man sitting behind the desk in front of him.

“Ah, yes Jason. You have been working here for a couple of months now and I feel that you are ready to undertake your first field mission.”

“Really sir?” Jason responded with a slight grin on his face, unable to completely hide his excitement.

“Through your work here you have shown me that you possess all the attributes and qualities which I look for in a potential field agent. You’re hard-working, determined, and intelligent. Something which makes me believe that you will be able to successfully complete this mission” Donovan replied.

“Thank you so much sir,” Jason said, truly humbled and honored by Donovan’s words.

At that moment a knock sounded at the door. “Yes,” Donovan called out. The door then opened and Ms. Connors once again entered the room.

“Excuse me Director Donovan, but Agent Forbes has just arrived.”

“Perfect, just in time...send her in.”

“Of course sir.” Ms. Connors then exited the office.

A few seconds later a tall and very attractive woman walked through the door. She was wearing a black pencil skirt, white poplin shirt, black stilettos, and a pair of silver stud earrings. Her auburn hair, which beautifully complemented her deep green eyes, was pulled back into a sleek high ponytail. From the moment he saw her Jason sensed an air of mystery surrounding this woman and was instantly intrigued and even somewhat captivated by her. Donovan stood up from his chair and motioned with his hand towards her.

“Jason Whittaker may I introduce Agent Tasha Forbes. She will be your partner on this assignment.”

Tasha extended her hand to Jason “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Agent Whittaker.”

Jason took her hand in his. “It’s a pleasure to meet you as well, but please call me Jason,” he said as he released her hand.

“Only if you call me Tasha.”

“I think I can manage that,” Jason said with a hint of a smile on his face.

“Please, have a seat,” Donovan said, gesturing to the two chairs in front of his desk as he sat back down.

“Thank you, sir,” Jason said.

“Thank you Donovan” Tasha replied as the two of them also sat down.

Donovan then opened the top drawer of his desk and pulled out two yellow folders. He handed the folders to Jason and Tasha who quickly opened them.

“For quite some time now we have been monitoring events in Krudia as the country has been racked by economic turmoil and civil unrest. The perfect opportunity for an extremist political sect to overthrow the government and seize power. Recently several of our operatives have uncovered a new political group called the Krudia Liberation Front or KLF. We believe them to be a fanatical and dangerous faction as there have been reports of them buying massive stocks of weapons and recruiting numerous followers. Your mission is to gather intelligence about the KLF, particularly its leader Dalmar, their main objective, and where their weapons are stored. You two will travel to Krudia where you will be posing as Melinda Tylerson and Edward Delucas - the leaders of an illegal arms operation based in South Africa who are interested in securing a deal to supply armaments to the KLF. You both will be leaving at seven o’clock, Wednesday morning, on Air U.S.A flight AU1498 from Washington to Bulin, the capital of Krudia. Once you arrive there you will make contact with a man named Tarek Matthins, Dalmar’s right-hand man. He has been informed by one of our undercover agents of your impending arrival as well as the armaments and weapons agreement you are supposedly prepared to offer. His code sign will be Zeta Delta Gamma 7104. Do either of you have any questions?” Donovan looked towards each of them for their reply.

“No sir, no questions'' Jason replied.

“Same here Donovan” Tasha answered.

“Well, then you two are dismissed. Make sure you get some rest. You’ll need it.”

“Of course Donovan” Tasha replied.

“We will sir” Jason responded as he and Tasha rose from their chairs.

They began walking towards the door when Donovan quickly spoke up again while making his way to the front of his desk. “Ah, Tasha...can you stay back for a moment?”

“Of course Donovan” Tasha replied before walking back towards Donovan’s desk. Jason then exited the room and closed the door leaving Tasha and Donovan by themselves in the office.

“Tasha...I just wanted to ask you if you’re sure you can handle this assignment?” Donovan asked with a concerned look on his face.

“Why sure Donovan. I’ve handled far more serious threats than this before. You can trust me.”

Donovan looked down for a moment, sighed, and then spoke. “It’s not that I don’t trust you, Tasha, believe me, I am well aware of just how capable you are.”

“Well then forgive me for saying this but what is the problem?... Why are you so worried about me being assigned to this case?” Tasha asked with a confused expression on her face.

“It’s not the assignment per se but rather your new partner...Jason.”

“Jason...what about him. You told me he has all the makings of a great agent, one of the best event analysts you’ve ever had in fact” Tasha said, still confused by Donovan’s apprehension.

Donovan nodded softly “Aye, Aye. that I did. It’s just that in my experience I have found that oftentimes new agents are so anxious to prove their skills as analysts that they recklessly take action without thinking. And I...I worry that the same thing will happen with Jason. Something which could have dangerous consequences not only for him but for you as well” Donovan paused and then continued. “Since you’ve only been partnered with experienced agents in the past I thought I’d let you know the risks of partnering with a new agent. In case you felt like you couldn't handle it and wanted to be reassigned.”

“I appreciate your concern Donovan but I can handle him. I haven’t spent this much time in the agency without learning a few things” Tasha replied as she attempted to reassure him.

“And that is what makes you one of my very best agents,” Donovan said with a look of sincerity and pride in his eyes.

“Thanks, Donovan. Hearing you say that means a lot to me...Well, I best get going. See you when I get back” Tasha said with a smile as she backed away from the desk, turned around, walked to the office door, and placed her hand on the doorknob.

She had just opened the door and was about to exit the room when Donovan called out to her “Tasha.”

She turned her head back in his direction, her hand still resting on the knob, and replied “Yes, Donovan.”

“Please...Be careful.”

“I will Donovan” she answered reassuringly before walking out of Donovan’s office, softly closing the door behind her. Donovan quietly sighed, walked around to the back of his desk, and sat once again in his office chair.

“I just hope I’m doing the right thing,” he said to himself in a low worried tone of voice before resuming his work.

Day 64: Final Mastery Over His Confining Reality

It takes a lot for Jade to talk about her emotions.

Actually, it takes a lot to get John to talk about his emotions too! Now that things have gotten to their bleakest, it looks like both of them are finally in a spot where they don’t have much of another choice except to express them to other people and work out what they actually want.

Jade is, of course, terribly lonely, and I think one of her greatest struggles is with the feeling that all her suffering is in vain; it sure does seem like quite a lot of it doesn’t turn out to really be for anything.

Sometimes suffering isn’t for any reason. A lot of times it is for some reason! Often as a consequence of harmful action on our part; and sometimes, we can use suffering to grow and learn more about ourselves - sometimes it is a teacher.

But sometimes, suffering is for no reason; we don’t have to feel like we are being punished, we don’t have to feel like we are being taught; sometimes bad luck is just bad luck.

Jade can contextualize her suffering as being so that things can turn out the way they were supposed to all she wants, but I’ve always felt like a big part of her arc as a character is to state that sometimes, often, suffering really is just pointless, and the universe is just cruel.

I believe suffering and toil is the fate of mankind, a shared pillar of the human experience, something not even the most powerful can escape. We cannot escape our fate, but we can rise up to meet it, which I think Jade does admirably. She’s inspirational, and aspirational.

As I’ve said before, Pipes here are a symbol of Dad - the Denizens are a lot of things - they are a reflection of their players, they are a reflection of their guardians, and given the fact that they tap into Skaia’s potential, they are something else entirely, mysterious, and perhaps to be treated with the same gravitas with which we would handle the sacred.

For John, going to confront Typheus is as one with going to confront his Dad; and the way he feels about his Dad.

Ambivalent, trepid, full of regret.

Jade calls attention to the same thing that has been mentioned before by Aranea and such; given a choice between two extremes, it becomes obvious that there is no choice at all. This is the way the self reveals itself in the world of Homestuck.

I have long felt like there’s this weird degree to which like, John and Roxy are alone together with the terrible weight of having watched everyone else die, and moving in to this new reality with experiences that the rest of the cast can’t relate to - that nobody else in the universe can possibly relate to.

But revisiting this line, I don’t think that’s true.

Both sides of this exchange have had to suffer the other’s loss, only to suddenly be reunited with a version of their lost friends that they have to refamiliarize themselves with.

Roxy’s use of the word authenticate should call to mind the use of it throughout the rest of the text - authentic is used in opposition to ironic, in much the same way sincere is, and is parallel to the way that Paradox Space is often described as self-justifying - it is self-authenticating as well.

For John, Roxy is proof that he exists, that what happened to him is real. For Roxy, John is proof that she exists, that what happened to her is real.

This is how we construct reality together - sharing our experiences with each other, giving rise to ever stronger and stronger proof that we all mutually exist, that the things we are experiencing are real and valid.
