lil’ pagan tip/idea- dedicate a journal to your deity!

a journal can be useful for a lot of reasons. not only it is an easy way to feel closer to your deity or deities, but it can be super convenient if you’re a person who travels a lot or need to worship in secret.

things to write or put in your journal could include:

prayers

pressed flowers/leaves/herbs

sketches or doodles of things that remind you of them

devotional poems or art pieces

song lyrics

experiences you’ve had with them

dreams they’ve sent you

recipes

stickers

spells / rituals (especially ones you have done or would want to do with them)

photos

notes on offerings and devotional acts

list of crystals, herbs, colors, etc. you associate with them

and these are only a few ideas :)

the journal can also work as a mini-altar that you can put offerings on! since taking care of myself is one of the ways i honor my deity, sometimes i’ll place a glass of water or juice on the journal i have and i can keep it next to me to sip from while i’m doing something. again this can be really helpful if you travel a lot, worship discreetly, or if you don’t have a lot of space for a full altar.

additionally, you can dedicate a few pens or markers to your deity too (because everything is better with fun colors!)

Unexpected Goth music

In the 90s you had the curious dilemma of both trying to avoid the title of Goth and also being accepted in the perceived Goth community. And there was an unfortunately high number of gatekeepers. You'd get asked what your favorite Goth artist or song was and for whatever reason "That doesn't count." or "That's actually Punk." or 'That's Death Rock, not Goth." or "That's too mainstream, that's not REAL Goth." And it got very irritating. So I'm going to list some of the things I think fit under the Goth genre that many would either not consider at all or would think "don't count." Disclaimer: This list does not contain obvious bands like The Cure, Siouxsie and the banshees, or Bauhaus. Once you remove those you'd be surprised how limited the selection of "real" Goth starts to feel. ______________________ And now here are the things that have (in my own experience) been classified as not Goth despite really fitting the criteria. Aurelio Voltaire - Sometimes considered Goth folk or "Dark Cabaret" or even "Death Rock" (1988 version of The Night) Aurelio Voltaire pretty much personifies Goth music. From his Gothic Neo Victorian / pirate look to such songs as Raised by Bats, Land of the Dead, Vampire Club, and the Neil Gaiman's The Sandman inspired "Come Sweet Death." Aurelio Voltaire is so Goth that I can't help but think there are other reasons people may not want to count him such as unconscious racism. (He's Cuban and has released Spanish language tracks.) Danny Elfman - Perhaps today most well known for his movie scores, particularly the iconically Gothic Nightmare before Christmas (where he was multiple voices including Jack's singing voice), Danny Elfman used to be the front man for the band Oingo Boingo where he had such songs as Dead Man's Party, Flesh 'n blood, Weird Science, No one lives forever, and No Spill Blood. These are arguably Gothic themed but not Gothic "style." However I do feel there is some Goth leanings in his 2020 album Big Mess which was officially released as the genre Industrial Goth. The Hex Girls - This band was invented for the 1999 Scooby Doo animated movie, Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost. Representing Gothic fashion, Wiccan spiritual beliefs, and environmentalism the band was meant to be a Gothic inversion on The Spice Girls. Defined as "Eco Goth" though arguably pop their songs actually were really good including "Earth, Wind, Fire, and Air" (though admittedy it should be Earth, Water, Fire, and Air), The Witch's Ghost, and Hex Girl. Inkubus Sukkubus - Considered Pagan Rock, they are definitely Goth, including the songs Sweet Morpheus and Vampire Queen (and several other vampire themed songs!) Blackmore's night - Neo Medieval folk rock band. You know... I think once you get called "Neo Medieval" you get a free pass to call yourself Goth. That's just my opinion. Including the songs Locked Within the Crystal Ball, The Darkness, and Shadow of the Moon.

Within Temptation - Symphonic Metal / Gothic Metal. One question... have you listened to them? Just listen to Angel, Stand my Ground, The Fear, or A Demon's Fate. Eden's Bridge - Progressive Celtic Folk Rock. They have two songs dedicated to Oscar Wilde's The Canterville Ghost. I know one song isn't enough but still... Sonata Arctica - Metal but some of their biggest hits are about magic and more commonly werewolves. Cain's offering - Again, Metal, but the subject matter is decidedly Gothic. Kamelot - Power metal but they have two albums that retell Goethe's Faust parts 1 and 2 (Epica and The black Halo). In fact pretty much everything they do is of Gothic inclination. Richard Campbell - Metal but he did an entire metal opera retelling the novel Frankenstein. I think that's pretty Goth if you ask me.

Smashing Pumpkins - Considered Alternative rock. There was time where just about anything vampire related was advertised with Bullet with Butterfly Wings. And the band is named after a popular Halloween prank. The lead singer is also a professional poet.

Alice Cooper - Welcome to my Nightmare, Keepin' Halloween Alive, The Ballad of Dwight Frye (actor from classic universal monster movies), Gimme, Black Widow (With Vincent Price). He also performed in Tim Burton's Dark Shadows.

Marilyn Manson - Once Classified as industrial Goth, he was denounced by many Goths as "too mainstream" or "Not Goth enough." The man did covers of Danny Elfman's This is Halloween, David Bowie's Golden Years, Annie Lennox's Sweet Dreams, and Lost Boys' Cry Little Sister. That's pretty Goth if you ask me. My Chemical Romance (MCR) - Do I really need to elaborate wit this one? David Bowie - Mostly considered Glam Rock, Bowie has dabbled in all genres and Heart's Filthy Lesson was definitely industrial. Aurelio Voltaire did a Goth sequel to the songs Bowie wrote for Labyrinth. And Bowie's Scary Monsters and Super Creeps inspired Danny Elfman. You can't get more Goth than that (In my opinion). Even Bowie's album Hours drifts into Emo territory. Prince - At the very least he had a Goth aesthetic. I think if he wasn't black people would be quicker to realize he could fit as Goth. There's a lot of unconscious racism among some (not all) Goths. Michael Jackson - One word. Thriller. He also had The Boogeyman's Gonna Get ya with The Jackson Five, and later Ghost. But once you get Vincent Price to rap you should automatically count. The Rasmus - Rock but most of their songs are decidedly Goth and probably should count such as In the Shadows, Ghost of love, and Lucifer's Angel. Sarah McLachlan - Though considered pop let's be honest. Every Goth and person in the 90s "vampire Scene" had her Surfacing album or at least heard Building a Mystery. Before her music started playing in ASPCA commercials you heard songs like Adia on Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Savage Garden - Though definitely pop they get an honorary mention for having songs inspired by Anne Rice and for naming themselves after a phrase invented by The vampire Lestat to describe the nature of the world in The Vampire Lestat novel by Anne Rice. Sting - Though not always Goth, Sting was in the Gothic horror movie The Bride and wrote a song from the perspective of Louis in Interview with the vampire called Moon over Bourbon Street. Stevie Nicks - She got an American Horror story: Coven tie-in music video and practices witchcraft. That's like hitting a Goth bullseye. Johnny Cash - Wore all black all the time and did a cover of a NIN song that is considered better than the original version, Hurt. Sir Elton John - Glam / Pop rock but he gets an honorary mention for composing the Lestat Broadway musical and having a full demo album that was never officially released and can only be found through dubious / underground sources. (Or Ebay if you were lucky in 2006...) Honorable mention to Bobby "Boris" Pickett for having the first Gothic themed song to get banned in the UK (Monster Mash) for being "Too morbid." You can't get much more Goth than that.

any tips for starting out when working with deities?

Hi, friend! Thank you for the ask, and sorry for the late reply. I've posted tips for beginners many times in the past, most of which you can find via links in this post. But now, since we're talking about working with deities more specifically, I'll list a few quick tips in a point form!

The golden rule to deity work, in my opinion, is respect. Everyone interacts with their deities with varying amounts of familiarity, but one quality always remains no matter the worshipper, and that is respect. But that goes without saying, right? 'Treat others how you want to be treated' makes no exceptions, even with non-human entities.

To me, the first step to respecting a deity is acknowledging their depth and multi-faceted nature. Mythological sources may describe this or that deity as the 'God of this or that', but in the context of religion, they are much more. The believer views the God as more than a mythological figure, but as a complex existing being.

For this reason, another tip I'll give is to get to know them. Learn as much as you can about them, and never stop learning. Not only about the deity/deities themselves, but also (and I think it's crucial not to neglect this!) about the cultural context in which they were first worshipped. I can't stress enough how big of a difference this makes when it comes to understanding a God. If you're interested, I've linked here a few of my favorite sources pertaining to nordic cultures, religions and history!

To me, offerings are not transactional. That is just my own belief, of course, but I don't adhere to the idea that 'one must give to the Gods in order to earn blessings and vice versa'. Paganism is not a trade market, but rather a way to experience spirituality. I believe in making offerings when you can, if you can, as a gesture of gratitude and not as a way to somehow 'earn blessings'. As a pagan, you do not "owe" anything to the Gods they do not "owe" you anything either.

Do not be afraid to simply spend time with them. While we may not always feel their presence, you can have faith in the fact that they watch over you. And for this reason, it's perfectly okay for you to sit down at your altar, or in the outdoors, to simply talk to them, symbolically sharing a drink/meal, telling them of your troubles or of how they inspire you. Developing this habit can help make you feel connected to a deity, even on a tight schedule, or during times when you feel disconnected from your spirituality.

In the same vein, it can be fulfilling and fun for you to dedicate certain activities to a deity of your choice! For example, practicing your instrument in honor of Bragi, or hiking in honor of Jörð, etc... What's more, whenever you dedicate an activity to a deity, you can invite them to partake in it, as I've described in this previous post!

Start to notice what things in your life reminds you of them. Maybe a certain smell? Or a song? What animals, meals, stories of else bring this deity to mind? Either because of the similar feeling they instill in you, or because you think this or that deity might enjoy them.

As a beginner, you needn't feel bad about how many deities you work with, or which deities you reach out to (so long as they are not part of a closed practice). I've always thought it weird how in some books centered around witchcraft, they'll rank deities in order of 'how experienced you need to be to reach out to them'. If you want my own honest opinion, anyone is free to reach out to any deity. No God is more difficult to work with than others. It all comes down to the individual, their values and the way they choose to work with the deity in question. I'm also not a big fan of such sources encouraging calling out to a deity during a ritual/spell like they're a tool for a magical working, if the practionner doesn't plan to really get to know them. But that's a topic for another day.

It can be greatly fulfilling as well to simply ponder a deity from time to time. What do they teach you? What can you learn from their example? What do they represent in your life? I listed in this post a few ideas of questions to ask yourself in order to better understand a deity and their presence in your life.

Take it step by step, day by day, and don't feel bad if you think you've made a mistake. We are all constantly learning. The Gods know we are human, and they reflect us in that way: they themselves have their strengths and weaknesses.

I hope this helps, but please do keep in mind that these are all my personal views on paganism, and that not every practionner will resonate with them. In any case, don't hesitate to ask if you have any other question(s) regarding practice or belief in the nordic path. Have a good day, my friend.

mtg vegas 2024 con report, day 0: we got married?!?!?

pop quiz, gamers! what do you get when you take the "can't" out of "cantelope"? (yes i know that's not how it's spelled, just go with me on this one.)

sooooo yeah. staring down the barrel of a u.s. election where a lot of our fundamental rights including marriage might become an open question again, and with a trip to las vegas already planned for magiccon, @vi-the-deer & i (who have been engaged for 4 years) both separately had the thought "hahaha, wouldn't it be wild if we got married while we were there?"

and then mommy actually said it out loud to me and i told vir i had been thinking the same thing... and the more we thought about it the more we realized we were talking ourselves into it and uh... yeah! before we knew it, it was literally happening.

in the spirit of spur of the moment plans, our nesting mate @sonic-spirit decided the night before we left that fae was coming with us, so that was our whole household minus our kitties.

the venue mommy found for us was shockingly gorgeous, and everyone we interacted with at any point of the planning & ceremony seemed like they genuinely cared about making people's special days as special as possible even if they're in the fast lane. our officiant asked us a bunch of questions about our story to get a feel for who we were as a couple. this might not be how we ever imagined doing this, but it was profoundly beautiful all the same.

we made the tactical error of walking out to "home" from undertale, giving added weight to a song that already made us cry on its own (just kidding, it was absolutely perfect).

we wrote our own vows, because of course we did. we cried all over each other, because of course we did. and we did a handfasting, because i'm pagan af, and yay rope. (@sonic-spirit made the rope for us!)

afterwards my & mommy's long-distance partner bought us dinner at gordon ramsay's pub, so we can all three cross eating at a gordon ramsay restaurant off our bucket list. and then we spent the night walking around the strip seeing everything vegas has to offer, and just... yeah. i'm still pretty euphoric over here.

so if you're ever not sure what to do when you're in town for a con but the con hasn't started yet, i strongly recommend getting married! 10/10, would do again.

(it probably helps if your wife is as amazing as mine, though, so ymmv.)

The Witches' road (The unfolding pattern)

Some Agatha All Along spoilers are in this post so be warned. I have noticed that each version of The Witches' road corresponds with an episode of Agatha all Along. There are six versions of the song so far and so far there are six episodes. This suggests to me that there will be two more versions of the song yet to be released. I kind of hope there's a power metal version or a version by Patti LuPone by herself, or a male vocal cover of the main version of the song. Here are the versions that exist so far. 1. The Wicked Road - Same melody as the main version and similar lyrics but references to witches and Neo Paganism are removed. This version is a sort of country song and sung by a man. 2. The Ballad of The Witches' Road score version. This is a purely instrumental version and it's closer to the sacred chant version than the pop version. It plays in the background periodically in the show. 3. The Witches' Road Sacred chant version - This version is used as an invocation spell in the show to open the way to The Witches' road. In the show we hear it sung by Agatha's coven (Except for "Teen" AKA William / Billy AKA Wiccan). At first I thought this would be the main version of The Wtiches' road song but it turns out the main version is actually the next one I will list. 4. The Ballad of the Witches' Road Lorna Wu version. This version is in the style of 1970s Glam rock. It was sung by Lorna Wu and transformed into a protection spell to shield her daughter from a generational curse. The lyrics are different from the sacred chant version and frankly, it's prettier. 5. The Balled of the Witches Road - Lorna Wu's version covered by Agatha's coven. Agatha and her coven perform a cover of Lorna Wu's version of The Balled of The Witches Road to save Lorna's daughter (and themselves) from the family curse that was invoked to test them. 6. The Balled of The Witches' road pop version by Japanese Breakfast. This version is stylized as indie pop. It's the same lyrics as Lorna Wu's version. Some small notes: Spells done by invocation, vocalization, or song lyrics are considered to be under the element of wind (not fire) the way the show suggested. The fact that there are six versions of the song so far (disincluding Lorna Wu's version played backward to invoke the curse) suggests to me there will be two more versions of the song. One to accommodate each episode of Agatha All Along. There have been (consistently) plot clues in the song lyrics, but they throw you for a loop in episode 4 by revealing that there are two sets of lyrics (disincluding the Wicked Road version). There could be yet another version of the lyrics yet to be revealed.
