@redrosesandcharmingsouls Lovely analysis .May I ask what’s film is this ?
Elizabeth, a pre-Tudors Tudor film with Michael Hirst at the helm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ok, so, i was reading this sort of snark-review of the above movie (which i'm not going to search for because it just overall had little merit, not worth a reread) which cited a specific critique of this above scene ('the matter of religion'), that if elizabeth was told that 'religion' killed her mother her primary response would be confusion, her mother was killed on accusations of adultery, incest, and treason, etc. and also that no one would say this because this obviously was not true.
while technically correct-- obviously the charges leveled against anne were not ones of heresy (although the prevalence of the theory witchcraft was in the suggestion if not literal text of the indictment by 1998 could be the explanation here)-- i would actually defend this creative choice, as a historically sound perception, ie, actually, a sophisticated creative choice in the context of the historical sources available.
protestant martyrologists such as john foxe did rewrite anne into the pantheon of protestant martyrdom, as a symbol if not literal martyr, much like catholic hagiography adopted catherine of aragon as catholic martyr for having suffered for upholding papal primacy, even if not literally dying for this belief as more, fisher, the carthusians, etc. catholic polemicists would not view her as a 'martyr', obviously, but they did view her as a heretic who deserved to die for her heresy among 'other crimes', even if this was not in the official indictment. so, actually... yes, it would be plausible that a marian councilor might threaten elizabeth with the salient reminder that religion 'killed her mother'.
moreover, this movie exists in a post-ives world...it was ives who made mainstream the theory that anne's stance on the dissolution was the catalyst to her downfall, based on strong primary source analysis and timeline recreation of events. after this, we saw a watershed in tudor fiction as it came to portrayals of her... it forced some movement in that binary mold which had existed for so long, anne as either femme fatale or tragic romantic heroine/victim (maybe she was neither of these things, maybe she was, actually, entirely more). in this way, it can be argued, she did 'die for religion'; and even if you disagree, there's still an emotional truth and resonance to this scene (in that this was what certain people believed, whether they cast anne as the heroine or villain of the tale...anne as the victim of a religious conspiracy by 'papists', alexander ales only one among them, anne as the 'wellspring' of 'heresy' in england), even if not a literal paint by numbers 'historical accuracy'.
tl; dr in the words of the immortal florence welch: who's a 'heretic' now?

doing a quick good omens s1 rewatch so I can 'member whadda hell happened before watching the new stuff, and yknow I think 2019 me was a bit overharsh in my judgement of the show. I never disliked it, but I'd lived with the book in my head since I was nine, so I had a very set idea of what the vibes and ambience ought to be and it felt off to watch something that felt a lot more grandiose and hollywoody than what I was expecting. my updated 2023 take is that that's perfectly fine as an aesthetic approach and most of the acting that I thought was off was just part of the stylization.

*gives Masuka a hug for Season 3, Episode 5*
It’s sort of funny, but during this watch I’ve been a lot more uncomfortable with his constant inappropriate comments, but I did still feel a pinch bad for him when people were ignoring his paper he got published (and threw it in the trash) or when no one wanted to go to his speaking performance (and only Dexter put on a show of taking a ticket--but Dexter didn’t go, so his “I wouldn't miss it” means nothing).
I’m glad someone said something to Masuka about his borderline harassment--even if the delivery was overharsh-- (and I say borderline, because most people know he’s joking or trying to joke), but the fact they kept giving him a hard time after he stopped is the part that hurts. He tried to change his behavior and was condemned worse for it.
His confrontation to everyone in this episode reminds the audience (and his “friends”) that he’s a person with feelings who wants to belong like everyone else.
It’s character development and it’s nice.
Honestly, I do enjoy that Dexter shows loneliness and wanting to connect with other people in so many different forms. It’s one of the major themes of the show and pretty much every single character has an issue with it one way or another and you get to see the entire spectrum of it.

Brew Review – Coffee and Vanilla Bean Porter by Pinellas Ale Works @pawbeer
Pinellas Ale Works is one of those breweries that is sort of instantly endearing. The facility is really cool, the beer names are cute, and the beers themselves are pretty good.
Really good, in fact. It was a shame that I couldn’t stay (inside joke) for longer, but I did grab a few things for the road. One of those was a nice bomber of Coffee & Vanilla Bean Porter (Porter, 7.5% ABV).
Really good. I tend to avoid Baltic Porters as being just too close to the generally overharsh Russian Imperial Stouts. This one, however, is smooth and inviting even though it has just a touch of malts considered a bit heavier than a normal porter.
What’s interesting is the flavor of the adjuncts. When I tasted it, there was a great blend of a piquant coffee and a well-moderated sweetness from the vanilla beans. My friend, however, only tasted the coffee.
As far as I’m concerned, he’s crazy. It was very balanced and incredibly flavorful, from the malt to the coffee to the vanilla, and all points in between.
I have some more from PAW, and I am exited to return there in the future. I just promise to spend a bit more time.
Drink Florida Craft,
Dave
