I'm not sure I'd you're the right person to ask this but I was wondering what you think of when you think of childhood best friends to lovers
Like, I need more ideas for like flashbacks/memories of things they did as kids and I thought you might be able to help...
I might not be the best person to ask, but I can certainly try!
These will be incredibly general because there are lots of variables you can substitute so they can fit the characters better. Also, this post ended up being long due to my inability to shut my brain up.
Scenario Set 1: Summer
As children, they would always have the same sort of frozen treat after a long day of playing together. After years (and possibly growing apart along the way), they still remember each others’ favorites.
Maybe they’re reminded of their childhood friend each time they see it. Maybe they decide to buy it for the childhood friend after an event (last day of high school, a breakup involving a third party, someone is lost, etc.)
Or maybe they just meet at a pool or the beach and they ask their parents to keep in contact. Or maybe it was a joint trip because their parents were friends.
Scenario Set 2: Moving Away
After being playmates for years, they say what they believe are their final goodbyes as one of them moves far away. Crying and heartbreak are optional. (For extra angst, sprinkle in a dead relative as a reason for the Big Move.)
Scenario Set 3: First Day of School
They may not have lived close to each other, but they might have gone to the same school as children.
Let’s say one is outgoing and notices a quiet kid that isn’t quite sure how to make friends yet. Instant friends!
Or they were raised together and are attached at the hip. At some point they have to leave each other, whether it be kicking and screaming or with quiet resignation. Maybe they’re in different classes and they slowly find new friend groups.
Maybe it’s the first day of middle school and they’re in different classes for the first time and one has an easier time making friends than the other.
Scenario Set 4: Playground
Here’s one that’s tried and true: The Schoolyard Savior! Person A gets bullied but Person B intervenes. Depending on the flavor, they’re either instant friends or Person A is forever in Person B’s debt and isn’t quite sure how to handle it.
Or they happen to be playing in the same sandbox by chance and they argue over the best way to make a sand castle (or what flavor of ice cream is better or literally any argument little kids could get into).
At some point it gets heated and they start to fight. It isn’t until they’re both crying that their parents actually come and get them. The children make begrudging apologies and learn how to be friends!
Scenario Set 5: Winter
Snowmen, snow angels, and snowball fights (if your setting allows)! Who hid ice in their snowballs like an asshole? Who made the shittiest snowman? Who preferred to fuck off and hide in a snow home?
Or maybe one moved to a snowy climate and didn’t know what fun things they could do with snow. Neighbor kid comes to teach them the wonders of winter!
Or on the flip side of that, enthusiastic kid from a warm climate drags their neighbor kid into doing Fun Snow Activities because the neighbor kid’s parents want them to get out of the house for once.
Sledding is also great. Who wants them to go down the steepest hill? Which one learns how to bail first (jump off the sled/tube before it hits something)?
Then there’s “dude put on some real pants or you’re gonna catch a cold” (but for characters in middle school because dude you’ve seen middle schoolers in shorts in freezing weather, right?).
There’s also a scenario where they’re young and spend too much time outside and both get sick at the same time.
Scenario Set 6: Crush
It’s Valentine’s Day and all the kids have to make valentines for the whole class/their family/their friends (choose one or all)!
How do they handle their first crushes? Who do they tell? How does their friend/future love interest react if they get told?
There’s also “hey parent can [friend] and I help you make sweets?”
Scenario Set 7: Sleepover
Depending on genders and parental ideologies, they might have had sleepovers together as children. They might have done stupid things together like staying up too late or asking existential questions for no reason.
If they could not have sleepovers together, it’s possible that one might have gone to a sleepover with other friends and had the subject of the other person come up.
Maybe some asshole kid slanders their first love or something. Maybe the kids talk about crushes and Person A gets that sudden Doki-Doki (weeb heart sound effect) when they think about Person B. Maybe Person A doesn’t realize they have a crush until some other friend lists what happens when you’re supposed to have a crush.
Scenario Set 8: School Dance
These... may not fit depending on your setting.
Person A and Person B go to a middle school dance together because they don’t have anyone else to ask/go with/didn’t want to leave their friend behind.
Person A doesn’t know how to dance and Person B teaches them.
Person A is in emotional turmoil because Person B found a date and they don’t know how to do the same.
Person A brings a handheld game system to a dance because their friends dragged them along. Their friend B has some sort of issue (date stands them up, wardrobe malfunction, etc.) and ends up taking turns with the game for the rest of the night.
Scenario Set 9: Hobbies
They both go through a phase they only find cringeworthy years after the fact.
One has a weird hobby and the other grows to respect it.
Or they both have the same hobby but they have a fight over something that doesn’t have a right or wrong answer. (Whether or not burn heals would work on people and if they would work as well as they do on Pokémon, for example.)
Person A’s older sibling has a hobby and they both want to learn about that hobby. They either get very enthused or give up easily.
I was going to give you a list of a bunch of blogs that do prompts involving couples but then it turned out that I was following 25 inactive blogs. Whoops.
One particular blog that might help is @/otp-imagines-cult. Any others that I would have recommended are either gone or I forgot about.
I hope this helps!
