That post reminded me of a conversation I had last semester with a friend.
Friend: From what I've seen, Latin American people tend to be more polite.
Me: What? Nah, we swear all the time, we talk in slang always
Meanwhile, my instincts to talk with formal speech (even if in an informal manner) to every person I stumble upon: I beg to differ.
#what i mean by that is:#the formal 'disculpe' when i ask a stranger something#or the not-quite-informal 'buenas' instead of saying 'hola'#honestly... i just realized how much i say 'disculpe' in my day-to-day. every time i need to get someone's attention if i dont know them#i also never know when to use the informal 'tú'. now ig ive gotten better but at the start? didnt know you? formal 'usted'. every time.#'se va a sentar?' rather than 'te vas a sentar?'; 'pase' rather than 'pasa'#though it might be a me thing. no clue. havent paid much attention to other back home to know for sure#others*#im working on it though#carime rambles
