I just realized what is my favourite thing about this cringe ass website. I love that no matter whatever obscure piece of media I decide to obsess over – an old tv show, a niche film or a book, a theatre piece, a video game – I always find if not an entire fandom then at least some kind of content on here and maybe other passionate people to talk to. Whatever I can think of someone's already talked about it on here before me, it's incredible.

So like I've been scrolling through some of your Ass Class stuff because your posts are neat, and I kept seeing villain posts mixed with your 3-E posts, which made me think of a weird question: If we ignore the fact the villains did bad things to the Class E characters, like if we have an AU without Takaoka punching kids or Gakuhou enforcing unfair rules, who do you think each student would get along with most? You don't have to do all the students, just maybe a few of your favorites!
Aww, thank you Anon for this sweet message! And for your patience because I sure took my sweet time writing this. Also it’s going to be long. Be warned.
To be honest… I’m not sure how to tackle this question. If Gakuho don’t enforce unfair rules, then class E as it is can’t exist, ie no separate building, no ‘only one teacher for all of them’, no exclusion from club activities. Which means the story of AC can’t exist, as Korosensei’s presence would be found in like… three days. And without Korosensei around, you don’t have Shiro, Takaoka or Nidaime. Which is kinda a problem if we want them interacting.
So, for this, let’s just ignore all the reasons all those villains would or would not interact with class E students. They’re just… here, I suppose.
Now, let’s go on and define who do I include as villains. Of course, we have the main four, Gakuho, Yanagisawa ie Shiro, Takaoka, and 2nd gen God of Death aka Nidaime. But… should we include every antagonist? I’m sure you will agree that Gakushuu and the other Virtuosos, while big rivals, don’t really count as ‘villains’. Nagisa’s mother? She’s certainly a villain, and actually my current favorite of the lot, but also she doesn’t have enough development to really see how she would act without the abuse. The three hitmen? End up being friendly in a way, if you include then you must also include Irina, Itona and Kayano to the villain lists, so no, they’re antagonists. Then I guess there’s Houjo or that random soldier in the anime, but nobody care about them. You might as well talk about Kunudon instead. Is that your true goal, Anon. Make me talk about Kunudon. Right, I thought so. Let’s just talk about the main four instead.
Before we go into which student would have who of the four as a favourite, we need to understand how would they interact with them without punches, kidnappings and all that.
Gakuho is probably the easiest to imagine, from his flashback personality and his post-assassination attempt moments. A cordial man who have his students’ interests at heart, able to speak about many subjects (and might brag a little about that), but have a few tricks up his sleeve to get them to study (like how Ikeda had one daily chance to defeat him every day), or just casually insert learning opportunities in conversation (the way he suddenly ask Terasaka how much chances Korosensei had to win). Frankly, the only students who would have a problem with him are probably the Terasaka gang, as they aren’t fond of authority figures, and Takebayashi, who don’t dislike authority figures so much as would feel a lot of pressure in interacting properly and leaving a good impression. Strangely enough, I feel like Karma would get along very well with him, as Gakuho would probably take him seriously and try to find challenges to nurture his potential. Plus, Gakushuu would be so annoyed that those two get along, it would be hilarious.
Now, the whole “have plenty of talents and can probably talk about various subjects (and is proud of it)” is also something you will find in Nidaime, but as for interactions, he would have no interest in teaching the class E students, nor is he in a position above them (as far as they’re concerned), so it would be way more casual. I’m not sure he would actually care much about them, without the whole assassination thing- it would be more of a business relationship, and just him being cordial whenever they happen to pass by, as part of his persona of the kind neighbourhood florist. He might end up having discussions with them on the subject of flowers or plants in general, which would certainly interest Kurahashi and Kanzaki (a former Ikebana club member), and maybe money-related subject (how to save money, how to make people pay more…) which Isogai would be really invested in.
Now, on someone who actually wants to teach but of a completely different character, we have Takaoka. Even without the punching, kicking, and all the physical violence, he’s a very tactile guy. Pat on the shoulders, slap on the backs, pulling someone almost like an hug… He’s also a loud and very enthusiastic guy. This kind of overbearing personality can be really divisive, you either like it or hate it but it’s hard to stay indifferent. Mostly he will make the shyer, calmer ones a bit uneasy, while people like Sugino or Okano would probably really be into it? And also, he buys lot of sweets. Which is automatically an A+ for the sweet alliance club (aka Hara, Kurahashi, Fuwa and Kayano).Which leave us with Yanagisawa. Which is a really tough case, as I just don’t see him interacting with children or teenagers more than he have to, and even less than that. Too emotional, too stupid for him. Plus, Yanagisawa… even taking into account that the whole tentacle experiment must have been a really stressful/tiring time, and that he was in a superior hierarchical position to everyone else in the lab… in the flashbacks, he was kind of a jerk. And I see him as one that lack the self-awareness that he’s a jerk, which make it really troublesome to interact with him. Sure, he can be a pleasant person whenever he wants to (as Akari explains to her big sis, ‘he looks fine on the outside’)- but why would he want to be pleasant to a bunch of 14 year olds who don’t have anything to bring him? (Or at least in this AU- this is why Anon’s question is tricky, as in a Korosensei setting it might happen differently). However… despite this, I feel a few students could still approach him.Okuda, without a doubt, as her fascination with science surpass any apprehension she could have to any potential hostility. She is a girl that stepped out of her comfort zone plenty of times, and she doesn’t seems to care about past reputations, if we consider her friendship with Karma? So, surely, she would certainly find the courage to ask questions about Yanagisawa’s work, because it must be so interesting. Plus, for all the disdain he can have, I don’t feel like Yanagisawa would be one to mock a particular science subject (for example, physicists that downplay how hard chemistry is), as the whole tentacle thing touched on both physics, biology and probably chemistry? So, really, as long as Okuda don’t try to ask for an internship under him she would probably actually appreciate him.Takebayashi… would probably respect Yanagisawa’s achievements, but I don’t see him going out of his way to interact with him. Mostly, if he pass by and the conversation peek his interest, he might end up exchanging.
Then we have Yanagisawa’s other interests. We do see him do magic tricks, notably some with doves. He also play with a rat in some chapter that he absolutely did not eat, what the heck Matsui, that was so…. So there are chances Kurahashi might just coo at the birds and find a common subject to talk about, pet raising and maybe insects? I could see Yanagisawa appreciating entomology.Another thing he seems to like is mangas- or at least the WSJ he’s seen reading. So, of course Fuwa have ignored all her previous assessments of the man just so she could talk about the latest chapter of whatever is trending. And Yanagisawa is sure to have very different point of views from her, so it’s bound to be interesting! How many times do you bet he actually root for the antagonist and defend the villain’s side. Or point out how stupid a plot point is. Or how science don’t work that way.
So! With that in mind, here are a list of which student would get along best with which villain, in this strange AU where they’re just here and not doing anything villainous; an incomplete list, as I only put the cases I felt really sure about:
Karma would, surprisingly, be partial to Gakuho? Because he’s paying attention to his students and also one who would actually try to challenge Karma intellectually. Plus, he likes to brag about his own son, and that’s just free teasing material against Gakushuu. What’s not to love about this situation.
Isogai would probably like Nidaime more. All the good advices for money savings and how to get a good relation with one’s clients that he could reuse as a waiter.
Okano and Kimura, I’m replying for them together because it’s a similar reasoning. They’re both physical, simple people, which I feel would get along more easily with Takaoka.
Okuda’s favorite would probably be Yanagisawa, at the surprise of most in the class, because really, how interested in science is she to ignore his unpleasant attitude, but most of it goes over her head in the first place.
Kanzaki… probably Nidaime due to her club, as mentioned earlier? And then it is revealed that, among all prizes and titles the Chairman got, he also won some video game competition that just make Kanzaki wants to challenge him.
Kurahashi is the girl that get along with everyone because she’s just like that. Incredible.
Sugino’s easy, he’s an enthusiastic guy who get easily friendly with people and who put a lot of efforts toward his sport of predilection, so he would probably go along well with Takaoka.
Takebayashi could go either with Yanagisawa or Nidaime, which is funny since they’re not really alike, but then that’s often the case with Takeban, isn’t it? Model student, with a good understanding of science and a respect of high achievements (but that would probably feel too pressured talking with the Chairman of his school), but also one that want to trace his own path and might be more dangerous than one might think at first.
Nakamura likes to be silly and want to have fun, so it might seems she would be partial to Takaoka, but I’m not sure she wouldn’t appreciate Nidaime more? More… mischievous, I guess.
Maehara… oh god, wouldn’t that be really ironic if his favorite was Takaoka? I mean, Maehara’s a bright young guy that was in the soccer club, and also pulled some nice dance moves in Korotan D, wasn’t he? But then, being around someone like Nidaime would be a real lesson on how to seduce the ladies and gentlemen too
…As you can see, I’m missing a lot of people on the list because I’m not sure what to think of them. Terasaka’s gang, for example, would probably not get along with Gakuho because he’s a symbol of authority, and neither would they appreciate someone like Yanagisawa; but would they actually get along with Takaoka, who’s someone uncomplicated, and also a physical kind of guy, but at the same time one who ask people to be really invested in their activities? Even for Hazama I’m not sure; she does stay around the rest of the gang, so it’s not like she feels uncomfortable with those kind of people. Plus, the whole enthusiastic thing, as one can see with Kurahashi that it exaust Hazama (well, starve her from her darkness) but at the same time, ‘They say that darkness is drawn to the light… ‘
In fact, on the subject of Takaoka, as I said he’s really divisive, and on the ones not on the list, I feel he probably wouldn’t be a favorite of the less social ones like Chiba, Hayami or Sugaya. Given Mimura’s awkward face in some panels I would say he would have an hard time, too. And I don’t really see them get along with Yanagisawa, so really, it’s a matter of chosing between Gakuho and Nidaime, and I can’t really tell which one they would chose.
Hara, on the contrary, is one that’s ‘good at handling the boys’ and is part of the sweet alliance, but would that be enough for her to choose Takaoka over one of the other not-villains?
…And I still have no idea for Kataoka. Neither for Fuwa- I evoked earlier she had a common ground to speak to Yanagisawa but that just mean I don’t exclude him, so I have even less of an idea what she would do. I absolutely don’t know about Okajima either- Gakuho probably knows about photography because he knows about everything, but he would probably be jugemental of Okajima’s other hobbies. Well, I guess Nidaime would be great at photography too that’s a basic spy/recon skill, gotta have that blackmail material. And Yada? I feel like she would appreciate Nidaime more but I don’t really have a basis for it?
Akari-Kayano, too, she could go a lot of ways- except one because her ex-brother-in-law is totally her unfavorite, for reasons that might all not be all that objective.
…Who’s Nagisa. Now you’re just inventing students.

How Capitalism Exploits Our Fear of Old Age
Digital Elixir How Capitalism Exploits Our Fear of Old Age
Yves here. I don’t mean to be a nay-sayer, but having developed major orthopedic problems after an accident, I find it hard to be cheery about getting old. This article makes a passing mention of financial stress among the elderly. A new story in the Financial Times, adding to a 2018 study Greying of US Bankruptcy, chronicles the rising level of indebtedness. Key sections:
In 1991, over-65s made up only 2 per cent of bankruptcy filers, but by 2016 that had risen to more than 12 per cent, says Robert Lawless, one of the authors of the report and a professor at University of Illinois College of Law. (As about 800,000 households filed for bankruptcy that year, this works out as approximately 98,000 families or about 133,000 seniors, since many file jointly as couples, he adds.) Over the same period, elders grew as a percentage of the US adult population too, but only from 17 per cent to 19.3 per cent….
In 1989, only one in five Americans aged 75 or older were in debt; by 2016, almost half were, according to the most recent US Federal Reserve survey of consumer finances. The rise in senior debt comes at a time when the wealth gap between rich and middle-class or poor Americans is at an all-time high, according to a study last year by the Pew Research Center.
By 2016, the wealth of upper-income Americans had more than recovered from the post-2008 recession, but the wealth of lower- and middle-income families was at 1989 levels, highlighting the long-term rise in income inequality in the US.
As these low- to middle-income families age, many are being pitched into debt-burdened retirement by several structural trends, including the decline of trade unions, with their power to negotiate real wage increases, good pensions and retiree healthcare packages; the disappearance of defined benefit pension schemes; steep healthcare inflation; and a sharp rise in middle-class families helping to pay for children to go to college.
By Valerie Schloredt, the the books editor for YES! Originally published at Yes!; cross-posted from openDemocracy
So I’ll be out in public, maybe ordering coffee, and someone I don’t know will address me as “sweetie.” I’m a 60-year-old woman, and I look my age. Because people haven’t called me “sweetie” since I was about 5, I’m thinking this is an age thing. That seems more obvious when a stranger ironically addresses me as “young lady” in situations where “excuse me,” “hello,” “hey, you,” or “pardon me, ma’am” would do just fine.
Such micro-aggressions, conscious or not, don’t just target older women. A friend my age who sports a distinguished gray beard was sweating through the last stretch of a half-marathon when a young guy in the crowd yelled from the sidelines, “Way to go, old dude!”
For decades, ageism has been one of the “isms,” along with racism, sexism, and ableism, that are unacceptable in progressive discourse and illegal under U.S. anti-discrimination law – at least in theory. Yet ageism against older people remains the most unexamined and commonly accepted of all our biases.
Look at media, from advertising to news, that portray aging almost exclusively in terms of loss – of physical and mental abilities, rewarding work, money, romance, and dignity. That sad and often denigrating picture leads us to fear aging. To distance ourselves from our anxiety, we label older people, regard them as “the other,” and marginalize them, perhaps most obviously in casual, patronizing remarks to strangers.
I’m seeing ageism a lot more clearly now that I am subject to it. So I welcomed Ashton Applewhite’s encouraging new book, This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism. Applewhite, who has been speaking and blogging on the subject for several years, takes a particularly empowering approach by discussing ageism from the perspectives of both the personal and the political, debunking myths along the way. Take the “deficit model” of aging – the common assumption that getting older is all loss and no gain. In reality, we humans retain all sorts of qualities and abilities as we age.
We’re also adaptable. That’s a quality that can have unexpected benefits, like the “U-curve of happiness” described in a paper published by the National Bureau for Economic Research. The authors found that older people report being happier than do people in middle age. We deal with declines, of course, but we may actually get better at some things, like discarding superficial values, solving emotional problems, and appreciating life’s pleasures.
That bonus in emotional resilience may come in handy, because we’re aging in an economically, politically, and socially volatile era. According to Applewhite, poverty rates for Americans older than 65 are increasing and 50% of the baby boom generation feel they have not saved enough to create sufficient income should they live into their 80s and 90s. And while employment discrimination against older people (40 and up) is well known but difficult to prove, half of the boomer generation doesn’t see how they will be able to retire at all, Applewhite reports.
In her new book, Downhill from Here: Retirement Insecurity in the Age of Inequality, Katherine S. Newman looks at the current economic landscape for older Americans and concludes, “Retirement insecurity is an increasingly serious manifestation of the vast inequality that is eating away at the social fabric of America.” What is now a bad situation for many boomers could be even worse for Gen Xers and millennials when their turns come.
So here we are, becoming more vulnerable over the years in a system that already treats people as expendable. Applewhite, for all her good-humored tone, calls out that system as global capitalism, as when she critiques the intergenerational competition narrative. The image evoked is of greedy oldsters sucking up jobs and houses and Social Security and Medicare, leaving nothing for the next generation.
It’s easy to be pulled into the generation blame game, abetted by underlying ageism, and to forget that economic systems are not inexorable phenomena like gravity or time; rather, they are the result of choices. In fact, rather than regard older people as leeches, we should remember that economic interdependence is intergenerational. Older people are an intrinsic part of society. Most of them have supported younger and older people in whatever ways were available. And whether working or retired, they buy products and services and pay taxes and contribute labor, support, and finances to their families and communities.
Applewhite caps her manifesto with recommendations that strike me as parts of what could be a Great New Deal for Age. It could start with more flexibility in employment so people could have longer careers, with more time out for training, exploration, and family. Resources would be put into accessible design for public spaces, as well as programs to support mobility for people across the spectrum of age and ability. That would facilitate their inclusion in community, and they would be in good shape to take part because of improvements in health policy, clinical practice, funding, and research. And if, toward the end of life, more intensive care were needed, workers and family members doing paid and unpaid care work would be fairly compensated or supported.
The truth is that improving systems to include older people would improve access and prosperity and quality of life for everyone.
All that calls for a new movement against age discrimination and organizing to get socially responsible representatives and policymakers into office. It also requires the sort of consciousness-raising and agitation that is now going on around the issues of race, justice, climate, and gender. Waking up to the real harms of ageism and refusing to feed the beast with our words and actions is the first step. The good news? The job is open to anyone and everyone, regardless of age.

The History of Television
From one of the writers of the next chapter…
Few parts of life have changed as radically in the past 20 years as television. The way millennials think of TV is entirely different, even from that of Gen-X, and even further from what older folks like me may remember.
In an age of instant access to anything you want to watch, it’s easy to forget that once upon a time, “appointment TV” and the old print TV Guide once reigned.
Here’s a brief history of how we got here and why I say, as an entrepreneur who’s been at the forefront of media technology for several decades, believe that despite the disruption in the media business and confusion among consumers, the future of television is bright.
Primordial Television
Television of course began with broadcast. I remember when most sets had a pair of “rabbit ears” that picked up anywhere from four to a dozen channels broadcast from local towers. And it didn’t cost a dime!
With so few choices, you were likely to simply watch what was on, whatever it happened to be. Grow attached to a show, and you had to remember what channel it was on and its time slot (an easier task back then), and make sure you were in front of a TV at the time each week, or risk missing an episode with no easy or reliable way to catch it again.
Real TV aficionados might have subscribed to the TV Guide, a paper guidebook with a printed grid of stations and their schedules, not unlike what you see when you push the “guide” button on today’s cable TV remotes.
Cable and Pay-TV
While broadcast TV signals could be freely picked up, the introduction of wired television service allowed consumer offerings to diversify. And from the business perspective, the marriage of Pay Television with more focused channels really changed the game.
For a monthly fee, customers could go from a dozen channels to 100 or more, and it was reliable too; no more fuzzy pictures or adjusting the antenna. By the turn of the millennium, cable and satellite TV were ubiquitous.
Unless you were in a remote an unserved area, or an older legacyantenna viewer, “TV” had taken on a new meaning: a subscription service from a
regional or satellite MVPD.
It was in this environment that I founded MegaMedia Networks, the company that launched the first on-page, no-download streaming video, in the late 1990s. Internet connections at the time were often 56kbps, but we were the “Netflix” of the time, while the actual Netflix was still renting DVDs by mail.
The “Big 3” Make Web TV a Reality
Through the 90s and 2000s, pay-TV offerings continued to grow, but as cable bundles bloated to hundreds of channels, cable bills rose sharply as well, growing faster than wages or inflation.
Paired with poor customer service from companies that effectively had local monopolies, and customers started to sour on pay-TV. And soon, they’d have an alternative.
In 2007, Netflix began living up to its name by streaming flicks via the net, in addition to via the mail. Around the same time, Hulu began streaming contentfrom NBC Universal, with Disney and FOX joining shortly there after. Amazon wasn’t far behind with its own Video On Demand service, eventually offering a similar library as a benefit of its Prime membership.
Together, these 3 on-demand libraries were it. And just about everything that you could watch online was spread between these 3 services. And with each one costing less than $10 a month, together they began to form a rival to traditional television.
Sure, it wasn’t as familiar as channel surfing, and there was no linear TV, so catching that must-see show or live news and sports at their scheduled times was out of the question.
But among the most tech-savvy and cost-conscious consumers, there were many advantages, but the biggest was price. Even adding premium movie channels like HBO and Showtime, a streaming “bundle” could come out under $40 a month, a fraction of typical cable bills at the time.
As cable and satellite TV began to lose subscribers, so too did the TV networks, who had long depended on the MVPDs for a steady revenue stream.
Realizing that they’d created a monster that could now destroy them, by licensing content to Netflix and other SVOD libraries, they’ve since changed their own strategies.
Cordial relationships between streaming services and Hollywood studios have morphed into an all-out war for content distribution rights where everyone refuses to share.

Over the past several years, they’ve stopped licensing content to Netflix and Amazon, and begun launching streaming products of their own. The same shows and movies, that could once be found between three services, are now spread across dozens. And with each one costing around $10 a month, subscribing to all of them can be just as costly as paying for cable TV, if not more so.
But it’s too late to turn back the clock on television. Consumers have grown more comfortable getting their content online, and begun an exodus from cable TV. In fact, there’s now a generation coming of age for whom pay-TV holds little value. They’ve grown up in the age of streaming, where free and cheap content has been abundant online.
I’ve said many times, when my own kids go off to college and then move out on their own, they’ll never pay a cable bill.
For them, it will be a bandwidth bill.
Despite the fact that it’s become harder for consumers to find the content they want, and harder for the television industry to make money, I believe that the future is full of promise.
Everybody recognizes the problem. And that’s the first step towards a solution. Consumers are hungry for a better solution than a dozen different apps. And everybody in the industry, from the content creators to the networks and services that distribute them, knows that the current customer confusion is bad for all of their business prospects.
But the solution for both consumers and distributors is afoot. Not hypothetically or in wishful thinking, the technology is here and now.
At FreeCast, we’ve spent the past 5 years building a media aggregation platform that addresses the pain points from both ends: an easy and affordable experience for consumers, and a legal and monetizable one for content providers.
Our SmartGuide serves an essential purpose, and one that has always gone hand-in-hand with television. Even when there were only a dozen channels, you had the old TV Guide. During the cable age, that “guide” button on your remote usually suffered the most wear and tear.
Now that there’s more content than ever, from more different sources, spread across the internet with no good way to navigate it all, there’s never been greater need for a guide. And now, when it’s needed most, ours is ready for prime time.
