"I've been put on probation for three weeks," Alex says, flopping dramatically over the front counter and onto a half-finished garment. Henry is silent, unspooling wine-colored thread, unmoved by Alex's thunderous arrival. Henry actually tugs the fabric free from under the dead weight of Alex's body, as if Alex is some inconvenient rock in his way. And, yeah, technically, he is, but he came to Henry for support, not to be ignored. Alex frowns. "You're not even going to ask why?" "I don't need to," Henry says, threading a needle with casual precision and beginning to stitch a button to—what Alex can tell, now that it isn't being crushed against the counter— an eighteenth-century waistcoat. With his attention still focused on his sewing, Henry sounds like he already knows the answer when he asks, "You attempted to stop the JFK assassination, didn't you?" Alex lets out a loud, exasperated groan. "Fucking grassy knoll conspiracy theory bullshit. I almost had him." Henry is silent again, but this time, Alex catches the corner of his mouth twitch, fighting a smile.
