#or go for the sophisticated greige blend. New Neutrals

when i tell youve ive had emotional breakdowns bc of color... the company i work for is usually really ok about having fun colors and design, but some of our clients *love* to say they go for a more sober/elegant aesthetic, while having a _grey + yellow combo_ as their main colors. sometimes i give up and desaturate everything so it looks like mud, and they love it. sometimes ill wage war email wars over our right _as humans_ to have fun with color. sometimes i win, sometimes i lose. i looooove (/s) companies that say they have a clean, sophisticated and subtle aesthetic while having the most boring ass branding. it doesnt mean good taste, it means anxiety. theyre afraid of competition, they wanna blend in and say theyre oh so serious and competent. there *are* stablished companies that are bold, damn, even government branding can be fun, and burocracy is their middle name lol. and i know weve been through the great flattening, corporate memphis. ive beneffited from that and still do. but we gotta move on, for our own emotional health lol
she's beauty, she's grace, she's the queen of 50 greys.
yes that is the color palette of the latest client ive been *dealing* with. fun fact, that last grey's hex code is #aaaaaa. it's like poetry.
story time! a couple weeks ago i was kinda tired and almost burning out, and then my bf showed me the nintendo alarmo announcement. i was so upset, so enraged, so sad, my whole day was ruined lol why? bc _the switch has no personality_. disclaimer that i dont own a switch, but i was messing witha friend's switch a couple months ago. and it *baffled me* how the only themes were black and white, the mii feature was basically hidden, it had basically no sound, and the main ui basically looks like netflix.
i didnt grow up with consoles, i mostly played on pcs. and i got my first console ever, a ps3, on 2012, and then i bought a 3ds on 2015. maybe it's the fruitiger aero of the time, i dont know, but they had a soul, you know. i was taken aback by how neutral the ps4 was but, granted, i didnt play on it much. but nintendo. nintendo, who had a decade of design soul and passion from the wii to the wiiu, releasing the switch with the barest bones ever, and then asking people a crazy amount of money for _a clock, with themes, that couldve been on the switch_? i never had a nDS, and i did some finaggling with my 3ds so now i can download dsi apps. i get that the ds and the 3ds were a lot of people's first smart devices and they dont need those anymore, but seeing the animal crossing clock for the dsi, as cute as it could be, *for free*, and the alarmo basically on the same week made my head in. why didnt they add the alarmo to the switch then???????????? i understand that most people wont have it on their bedrooms like they would have the DSs. but. this is beyond the alarmo, it's beyond the switch, it's color and life. i spent years feeling butthurt i didnt have a switch, and coming to learn that it doesnt have nearly as much heart as the previous decade, ive finally taken the copium that im ok without it lol even the most basic OSs like microsoft, linux, browsers, even the most simple apps will allow you to change the background. the switch doesnt even allow you that. and then nintendo shows up with a clock with themes??????? i *hope* that that means the wii u trauma is over, and that the switch 2 is gonna come back from the aesthetic comma...
"are you not entertained?" side note: my parents moved to a new apartment in 2018, and made loads of renovations. a friend of mine met me there once and said that our living room looked like a hospital waiting room. *and it does*. a friend of my mom's, an architect, designed that. my civil engineering mother approved that. a lot of people say _oh but we're bombarded by color all the time, so much advertising, everybody wants to sell me everything_, and yet the kardashian clan made a whole empire of greige. and people ate that up. minimalism doesnt need to mean the end of color, the end of fun, it can be about harmony. as we're reaching the mid2020s, i really, really hope that companies stop being so afraid of color, of boldness, of life. i hope that we as *people* stop being afraid of color. we all know the political/economic climate is difficult, but when has it not :/ the colors we choose for our homes, our workplaces, our personal belongings all reflect that. and we're tired of griege, and we're actively doing things about it, and that makes me feel less insane. and i know not everyone will care about this, but i can sisyphus my work until it's fun lol
Color has been disappearing from the world.
A new research group used machine learning to track color changes in common materials and items, below is their findings for all color changes over time, they used 7000+ items from the 1800s to now to determine color changes in the most common items.
Below are the colors of cars by year, notice how the majority of cars are grey, white, or black compared to twenty years ago.
These aren't data points, but they are comparisons between the 'modern' homes of the 70s and 80s compared to the modern homes of today.
Carpets have equally had the same treatment of grey added to them! The most common color of carpet is now grey or beige.
Even locations that used to scream with color for decades have now modernized to becoming boring minimalist (and I love minimalism) personality-less locations.
The world is becoming colorless, why?

15 Kitchen Paint Color Ideas and Combinations to Freshen Up a Space@|what color to paint your kitchen@|https://www.thespruce.com/thmb/XILVjBzYrGq5IyywOX3pQEMec20=/2048×1365/filters:fill(auto,1)/enlivening-kitchen-paint-colors-1822143-hero-7d27a09897324e5c843b856aeb4f3b5e.jpg@|25
You have the entire color wheel at your disposal, so steer clear of boring or bland when thinking about painting your kitchen. Gorgeous colors come to life when you open yourself to the possibilities. Neutrals, whites, and grays are popular kitchen colors and have a multitude of gradations. Home design experts suggest that you look at popular picks, then open your mind to other colors outside of those ranges before making a decision.
Color Family: Neutrals, such as whites, off-whites, grays; also consider blues, greens, and dark tones
Complementary Colors: Neutrals work well with all; however, if you use paints in the teal or aqua range, complementary colors include oranges and yellows
Pairs Well With: These colors pair well with other neutrals, include whites that bring out the hues used
Mood: Lighter hues: bright and airy; darker hues: sleek and sophisticated
Where to Use: Kitchen walls, islands, cabinets, and accents
Here are 15 of the top paint hues for kitchens, according to home design experts.

Light Gray
The Spruce
Clay Hill is a 100-acre farm and Federal-style home to jewelry designer Elizabeth Locke and her husband, John. Working with designer Alison Martin, Locke decided on a light patrician gray that complements the Victorian-age tiles, patterned Roman shades, and lyre-backed chairs.

Cream
The Spruce
KariAnne and her husband bought a house in the country, which they christened Thistlewood Farms and designed in a country estate style. For her cooking space, she went for a shabby chic look. The explosion of cream extends throughout the kitchen, giving it warmth and a homey feeling with a dash of sophistication. The colors in the kitchen perfectly complement her pure white bone china.

Matte Black
The Spruce
When Michael Minadeo + Partners was tasked with the job of designing a structure in Stowe, Vermont, part of that project involved this kitchen that would be an aesthetic counterpoint to the building’s natural wood. The light golden-brown of the ceiling and window trim is well balanced by the matte black of the walls and kitchen cabinets.

Dark Gray
The Spruce
[external_link offset=1]
As a trendsetting interior designer, Susan Greenleaf is no stranger to bold moves. For her family’s San Francisco kitchen, she enlisted the help of Geiszler Architects and Farallon Construction. She chose a deep, rich gray (Plummett by Farrow & Ball) for her go-to kitchen paint color. This moody gray plays well with the generous light that cascades through windows and large glass doors. This strong architectural gray is named after the lead used by fishermen to weigh down their lines. The paint color has a modern feel, more hard-edged and industrial than other gray hues.

Teal
The Spruce
For a fantastic splash of kitchen color, design blogger Kristi at Addicted 2 Decorating chose a tasty, palatable teal for cabinets and white for the rest of the area. Her new kitchen makes her heart sing.
Formerly, her heavy kelly green kitchen made her feel boxed-in like she was cooking in a cave. The lighter bluish-green color is more cheery and ties in with the rest of her house. She had the color custom-made by Benjamin Moore based on a color swatch she had (it’s very similar to Behr’s Hallowed Hush).
Tip
Before painting your cabinets, decide if you will use oil-based or water-based latex paint and primer. You can use latex over durable oil, but oil won’t adhere well over latex; latex is a safe bet if you don’t know which type the old paint is.

Light Blue
The Spruce
Decorating blogger Beth Bryan’s new kitchen color transformed her updated kitchen from an unappealing yellow to a gorgeous light-blue (Silver Sage by Restoration Hardware). Beth reports that the blue she used transforms throughout the day. When it’s cloudy outside, the paint becomes a warm greenish-gray color. When it’s dark out, the paint is “a cool silvery gray color.” The wall color works well with whites, creams, dark and light woods, and her dark kitchen hardware finishes.

Sherwin-Williams Cavern Clay
The Spruce
Kitchens with an earthy, retro ’70s vibe are increasing in popularity. Pair walnut cabinetry with beautiful terracotta walls in a paint called Cavern Clay (SW 7701) by Sherwin-Williams. The warm reddish, almost chocolaty dark neutral color works well with natural wood tones, avocado green, purplish grays, creamy white, and golden yellow.

Magnolia Homes Cinnamon Sugar
The Spruce
When it comes to painting kitchens, beige tones are often overlooked. Beige walls create a feeling of warmth, which fits right in with the process of cooking. A pretty beige color to consider is Cinnamon Sugar by Magnolia Homes. Its subtle tan base has pink notes that makes a kitchen look cozy but not muddy or yellowish.

The Spruce Best Home First Frost
The Spruce
An idyllic shade of white paint can be dreamy in kitchens. The Spruce Best Home First Frost (SPR-25) scores big points for being both bright and warm. Because the color has a warm undertone it is the perfect foundation for a modern kitchen with metallic accents in rose, copper, or gold tones. It also flawlessly pairs with natural wood shelving.
Tip
Choosing a white wall paint color for a kitchen can be challenging since it’s largely covered with cabinetry. That’s because there are undertones to every white, making it either a warm or cool color. The best way to choose a white for a kitchen is to sample it on every wall in large swaths so you can see how the color reacts with cabinets, appliances, and sources of light. With whites, you may see many different shades and tones throughout the day and night.

Sherwin-Williams Let it Rain
The Spruce
“No color is off limits for a kitchen, but these days I prefer kitchen walls in serene tones of a pale ocean blue,” says Heidi Techner, the program director of interior design at Harcum College. “Let it Rain (SW 9152) by Sherwin-Williams combines elements of an invigorating blue with a calming gray undertone to create a relaxing and restorative energy.” She suggests using this color as a neutral. White cabinetry and pine flooring make for beautiful accents when paired with this shade in the kitchen.

Benjamin Moore Upper West Side
The Spruce
White is sometimes a little too lackluster for a kitchen space. Interior designer Alec Holland says, “One of my favorites is Upper West Side (CSP-70) from Benjamin Moore. It is warm enough to create a little depth and drama without feeling dark or moody. It also looks thoroughly chic with white kitchen cabinetry.” When you want a hint of color, but aren’t looking to stray far from quiet hues, this taupe is a great darker neutral option.
Continue to 12 of 14 below.
Glidden Red Delicious
The Spruce
“Red is a stimulating color making it ideal for a kitchen accent wall because it can stimulate the appetite, and even create an energizing environment for lively conversation,” says Harcum College’s Heidi Techner. A yummy color worth trying is Red Delicious (00YR 08/409) by Glidden. Pair this classic red, which many consider a darker neutral, with cabinetry in its complementary color of cerulean blue for a truly luxurious look. Or tone down the red with a rich gray or a delicious darker brown (think caramel candy apple).
Continue to 13 of 14 below.
Benjamin Moore Gray Owl
The Spruce
“Gray Owl (2137-60) by Benjamin Moore works in most kitchens because it goes with a broad range of colorful cabinetry,” says Patrick Planeta, owner of Planeta Design Group. “It makes white cabinets stand out, and the paint shade is also light enough that when paired with darker cabinetry it will not make the rest of the kitchen feel oppressive or heavy.” He also appreciates the color’s ability to balance tonal differences, which makes this versatile neutral perfect for kitchens with two-toned cabinets.
Continue to 14 of 14 below.
Sherwin Williams White Duck
The Spruce
Kylie, interior designer and decor blogger behind Kylie M. Interiors, says White Duck (SW 7010) by Sherwin-Williams is a pitch-perfect blend of beloved greige, which means that it never feels too beige or gray as the light changes throughout the day. The neutral allows white subway tile to sing and provides a clean backdrop for rustic wood accents.

A Natural Choice: These Are the 5 Hottest Colors to Paint Your Home This Fall
If you’re planning to do a bit of painting this fall, you might want to step outside first for some inspiration—this season’s indoor color trends are all about what’s beyond your front door.
Colors that evoke the feeling of being in natural surroundings—greens, blues, and woodsy browns—will be everywhere this season, experts tell us. It makes sense, since we all may be craving the outdoors after we’re forced to retreat inside for refuge from fall and winter’s chill.
“This and next year is all about embracing nature, sustainability, and warmth at home,” says Helena Brana, designer and founder of BRANA Designs in Orange County, CA. “The everything-beige trend is done; so is Scandinavian cold style.”
Here are a few colors to go with when you’re ready to bathe in nature—without having to leave your living room, that is.
1. Olive green
Photo by Rachel Loewen Photography Olive, a combination of dark yellow and green, has a very warm and natural feel to it, Brana says.
“Olive is warm, and it looks fabulous—so it makes sense to bring it home, especially for the fall,” she says.
In fact, we’re already seeing this trend come to life in the wild: A light olive color, “Back to Nature,” was recently named Behr’s color of the year for 2020. The paint company calls it a “new neutral,” meant to bring the soothing feelings of the outdoors into interior spaces.
Olive pairs especially well with warm gray tones. Try an olive sofa in your living room. Alternatively, paint your bathroom vanity or kitchen cabinets olive for a touch of nature wherever you go.
This season, Brana’s also seeing olive and other green tones used for murals with nature motifs, from leaves to entire forest scenery. You could paint one yourself, or use wallpaper for the same effect.
2. Bright orange
Photo by PACS Architecture It wouldn’t be PSL season without some orange sprinkled in. And this year, the brighter, the better, says Erin Davis, lead designer at Mosaik Design & Remodeling in Portland, OR.
“This year, bright orange lends a modern twist to interiors—more so than the more muted orange tones we often see in fall,” she says. “Bright orange paint can be a bit bold for some, so integrate this color with accessories and artwork.”
She recommends vibrant orange textural pillows or throws, a lamp, or a potted plant in the living room or bedroom. In the kitchen, put bright orange vases or candles on display—bonus points if you have orange shelving. Or, just in time for the holidays: Try putting out a glass bowl of persimmons on your kitchen island.
3. Porcelain blue
Chinese Porcelain Blue
PPG Paints
If you’re into bold hues, “Chinese Porcelain Blue” will be your new favorite. It’s appearing on cars, clothing, electronics, and in homes, of course. In fact, PPG Paints recently named it its color of the year for 2020.
“This shade is a blend of cobalt and moody ink blue that imparts calmness and restful sleep, while also offering the spirit of hopefulness—a precious commodity in a restless world,” says Dee Schlotter, senior color manager of PPG.
She recommends using it as a feature color in a bedroom, with crisp white bedding and crown molding as accents. Or, try it in your living room, layered with blue tufted or velvet furniture, or with metallic finishes.
4. Greige
Photo by Suzie Parkinson SÜZA DESIGN Beige may be over, but only to make room for its chicer cousin: Greige—a warm combination of grey and beige. It’s a fine base for just about everything in the home, suggests Kasey Clark, an interior designer at Clark Designs.
“We’re seeing the former popular grays being warmed up for fall, with undertones of browns, creating a beautiful combination of gray and beige,” she says. “It’s sophisticated, modern, and complements so many of this season’s accent colors, like navy blue, hunter green, bold reds, and peachy pinks.”
Combine your greige paint with natural wood finishes with clear stains, like light oak and walnut, Clark recommends. Pair this combination with patterned Persian rugs with blue and red tones, to add a sophisticated warmth to any room.
5. Wooden textures
Photo by Altereco Design We know wood isn’t technically a color, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out natural wood as a potential wall treatment, notes Jake Lizarraga, a blogger at interiorcharm.com.
“This year, we’re seeing a lot of bold colors and patterns, but wooden textures are reigning supreme,” he says.
Use wooden textures to create a unique accent wall behind your television or bed, on the ceiling in a hall or entry, or use wallpaper instead. Each gives your home the comforting feel of an indoor forest.
