#ooh also i'd love for the tmbd fandom to weigh in on how this book deals with people's pronouns

@laughingfate @petraforgedyke it is battle of the linguist mages and it is WILD. i still have 300 pages left and there have already been at least two major paradigm shifts the protagonist has had to weather. she's possibly in a cult now. she's also being recruited (both irl and within a virtual reality) by the underground network which is responsible for undermining everything she's been working for. a lot is happening all the time and there are 300 more pages of this. i have no idea what is ahead of me or what it is my sister doesn't want to influence me about. i need to finish this immediately so i can talk to her about it.
my sister just mailed me a book with a note saying she's not going to tell me what she thought of it until after i've read it because she wants me "to remain uninfluenced by [her] opinion." ominous.
#i'm still kinda on the fence but i have gotten sucked in so i will probably finish it this weekend#and the style has grown on me as i've continued on. i think what i didn't like at first was the protagonist/narrator#but now i feel like...not that that is the point but that i understand that characterization is not that important to this story#so far the characters are just vehicles for the worldbuilding. but the worldbuilding is pretty cool so i'm allowing it#and the narration is pretty funny at times so that does help a lot#books#at first i interpreted my sister's statement to mean that she hated it#then i remembered that she is well aware of how much i love unreliable narration so i thought maybe she said that because there's some#awesome twist that she didn't want to give away#now i'm maybe a third of the way in and for reasons that are difficult to explain i'm getting the impression that that is unlikely#anyway my sister is not a huge sff person so it's possible that even if she hated it i will not hate it#and the nice thing is that (so far) there hasn't been any linguistics worldbuilding that has really annoyed me#but i'm still dying to know her opinion#ooh also i'd love for the tmbd fandom to weigh in on how this book deals with people's pronouns#because the author is very conscientious about having the protagonist explicitly tell us what someone's pronouns are and how she knows#which is something that i've seen tmbd fans say they wish martha wells would do#but i find it very awkward in this book and idk kind of performative? but since i don't mind how pronouns are handled in tmbd#i do wonder what folks with that stance would think of this approach
