Yara didn't really have any friends growing up lol she would sometimes play with the other orphaned girls at the convent but she didn't end up becoming super close with any of them. They just found her kinda weird and off-putting so she ended up getting excluded most of the time. The person she was closest to at the convent was Sister Martha, the librarian, who was always kind to her and showed her new books she thought would pique her interest.

The first person who ever called Yara a "friend" was Thatch. She was so surprised by it and a little bit confused as to why he would want to be friends with her (he's like twice her age and a fearsome Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, after all), but he just smiled and said that now that they're on the same ship, they should be friends.

She lost contact with pretty much everyone at the convent. That was mostly Cipher Pol's fault, though. Yara can't exactly return. She's a wanted criminal now. It'll put everyone in danger. (In the montage of random civilians before Ace's execution in episode 459 or 460, there's a nun praying on a seaside cliff in the Grand Line and I headcanon that she's one of the girls Yara grew up with).
