Let’s talk about War of Hormone (yes, still)
I have finally congealed my thoughts about it, so here goes for anyone thinking about it still.
At the time the song came out, I was 100% okay with it because the lyrics reflected the very things I often thought about in relation to men. In fact, as a horny teen unimpressed with how my hormones affected me and made me obsess over men, I really liked it.
The video I was not and am still not thrilled by, but that's a different issue I won’t address here since I feel its issues are much more straightforward.
Now, I am a bit uncomfortable with War of Hormone... I mean I stand by my previous thought that gender not need be attached to it, but at the same time, I have to acknowledge that without disclaimer the lyrics can certainly objectify the other gender. I often naturally put the disclaimer (stuff like "that person is but a person! despite their hot looks") in my head so I projected that onto the song. Indeed, there could easily have been that same disclaimer in the minds of the people creating it, but as a released "statement", I have come to conclude that it really should be more explicit about it; otherwise, it's hard to argue against the objectifying nature.
As for it being sexist, the argument for that from my perspective is that women have a history (and a present, too) of being objectified way more than men. Because of this, the song can certainly be viewed as part of systematic sexism while not necessarily being sexist as an isolated song.
In conclusion, I am still on the fence about it. There are aspects I like about the song, but there are problems with it too. My love for it is now nuanced and a bit bitter, and it is likely to remain that way.
As for the converse high lyrics “do not wear converse lows”... I find these to be perfectly okay? The song is a silly song about converse highs lol. I mean, I get that dictating women’s dress is an issue... I guess I can see it as problematic for teenagers trying to fit the perfect “type” of their biases... I guess I also imbued the lyrics with my own understanding of people (if someone is actually petty enough to care about you wearing converse high vs low they have some issues). Okay, maybe that song has issues too.
What sets me more at ease in general with BTS and sexism is the response from BigHit... while the first part had me more upset that they were issuing a non-apology rather than ignoring it even ( “could be perceived as ... regardless of intent” are common phrases used to defer responsibility and apologize without acknowledging the issue) , but the rest of it shows more reflection ( “we will take the criticisms and the points in question into consideration for future works. Through self review and discussion, we’ve learned that we can’t be free of societal prejudices and mistakes, as they are a part of each individual’s growth and experiences, things that are seen and learned in society.” ). The defining moment for me was when there was a clear statement of what was wrong with the lyrics: “we’ve also learned that defining a woman’s position or value in society from a man’s point of view could be wrong”. Coming from a label, such a blatant admission is pretty impressive.
Something that touched me immensely was when I discovered RM is now getting advice from professors... he comprehends that he will not always be able to spot if there is something problematic with his lyrics and he cares enough to get expert advice on it... Honestly, I started crying when I read that.
What worries me more than the lyrics, though, is the denial of responsibility from fans:
“I am a girl - I see nothing wrong with the lyrics” - you do not speak for all women, and as mentioned above, just because something isn’t sexist in isolation does not mean it does not contribute to a wider trend that is harmful. As I said, personally the converse high lyrics are completely fine... but upon reflection, they do form part of a negative societal trend. Even on a personal level, we don’t always know what’s best for us or what affects us (or are unwilling to admit it). Abusees make many excuses for their abusers and often see nothing wrong with their abusers’ actions. (Not that BTS are anything like abusers, just an observation to make a point: just because we can’t see what’s wrong does not mean everything is okay).
“BTS didn’t mean anything by it” - I actually share this perspective. The second part is what worries me: “so it’s alright”. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. A huge part of sexism is embedded in the social culture. People weren’t sexist because they were evil. They weren’t sexist because they were trying to put women down. Back when women started to push for the right to vote, there were women who opposed this vehemently. There were women who were apathetic to it. The truth is that culture informs a large part of our ideals, so we have to be careful when taking part in forming/propagating culture (in us and in others). We will sometimes fail, but saying that BTS should not acknowledge the cultural role they play or the times they’ve come up short, just because they mean well, is ridiculous.
An aside about objectification: If we consider it, k-pop fans often address and act this way to idols - declaring them to be “gifts”, etc, etc.
I don’t think this is completely wrong - after all, most of us have a sexuality burgeoning in us, and especially as female teenagers it can often be denied, in many senses of the word - told it should be repressed explicitly (usually because of religious reasons), told it is less strong or that it is ‘normal’ for it to be weak compared to men’s sexuality (thus thinking it weird/not good when it’s not that weak), etc. So I feel spaces to express our sexuality/desires is great and sorely needed.
On the other hand, the objectification of these idols can be severely harmful to them, and bad for society as a whole. Sasaengs are an extreme example of how bad this objectification (even if it’s not strictly sexual, still objectification) is.
Male idols have it a bit better in terms of systematic objectification (they don’t consistently have, for example, 40 y/o women writing their lyrics or directing their MVs, while the opposite is unfortunately very pervasive for female idols), but in terms of unhealthy fan obsession I’d argue their experience is just as bad (if not worse, given that their fanbases are more demographically skewed by gender).
Many kpop idols are teenagers when they debut, so the sexualization of them, both on the label’s side and the fan side is even more worrisome. Jungkook, for example, has expressed dislike for the overly sexual comments left about him under BTS videos. I don’t think many people in his position would feel comfortable with some of those comments. International comments, in particular, can have this issue as they have to overcome a culture and language barrier. Comments that are hilarious to me can easily be seen as crass and harassing once translated. A lot of the times it is done in good fun from a fan perspective, but to the idols themselves, it is totally different. (This is not necessarily limited to sexualizing comments - remember “Jimin has no jams”? this phrase remains funny to me, but I can never repeat it publicly since it affected Jimin to the point where Namjoon noticed and uploaded a BTS bomb called “Jimin has yes jams”; other common examples are the fandoms’ fixation on k-idols mispronounced words, which is cute to us but for idols straining to learn a foreign language is a deep shame.)
It is important to remember that this online world is pretty much a part of the idols’ workplace, and there are places where it is more acceptable to express desires than others (BTS is probably much less likely to stumble upon a smutty Tumblr about them than they are to read a comment left in their fancafe or under a YouTube video). Here’s a good video discussing the grey lines between sexual expression vs. harassment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIJwyY_JyQU

Seventeen Concert Review
On Friday 1/10/20, I went to Seventeen’s <Ode to You> show at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. This was my first non-Monsta X kpop concert so it was a bit of a change for me. But I think it was worth it because Seventeen is such a talented group with a solid collection of songs.
There’s a lot to discuss, so I’ve broken down my concert experience into parts.
Pre-Concert
Tickets
I knew that Seventeen was going on tour, but I didn’t realize that tickets were actually on sale until Seventeen posted an announcement on Twitter! I was just about to go to bed when I saw the tweet, but I immediately bought a ticket. The price was a bit higher than what I’ve paid in the past but it was still fair and purchasing on Ticketmaster for the first time went surprisingly well.
Venue
Getting to the Prudential Center was pretty easy since I already knew how to get there (it’s right across from the New Jersey Performing Arts Center where I saw Monsta X in concert for the first time). Check-in was easy and Prudential is big and filled with vendors. My seat had so much potential for greatness until I realized the lighting structures above the stage were blocking some of my view of the stage screens. I thought the lights would go up once the concert started, but they stayed in place the entire time and I could barely see anything properly on the screens. Thankfully there were a few movable screens that were lowered enough so that you can watch video segments, but once they went back up I was stuck with the obstructed screens for 95% of the show. Hence I couldn’t see group members’ faces or watch performances well. I guess one benefit to this problem is that the now useless screens forced me to actually watch what was directly going on stage, but that still doesn’t justify anything. This was hands down the most ridiculous venue issue that I’ve ever had to deal with and I probably won’t go to another concert at the Prudential Center because of this.
Crowd
There was obviously a high percentage of young females but there were a few guys and a few parents there. People seemed very interested in buying things and the crowd was super excited and energetic throughout the show.
CONCERT
The concert started at about 7:40 PM, and I liked that they played all of Seventeen’s MVs in order from debut to now so the videos could lead up to the actual show. At almost three full hours long, this was the longest concert I’ve ever been to, so I think I definitely got my money’s worth in that sense.
Stage/Audio/Visual
The stage was shaped like a “sideways H”, but I didn’t really like that. It’s good that Seventeen could walk/run around more, but I would’ve preferred if there was just one main stage so it would be easier to focus on the group. However, I liked how members used the stage to disappear and reappear for different songs. I also liked the different props since they were a nice touch to performances. The best one was the stage with giant picture frames. The audio was good and the lazers were nice even though they flashed into my eyes a few times.
Videos
The videos were nice but they didn’t really have a storyline or anything. They were essentially just there to show Seventeen in different settings while briefly focusing on each member or unit.
Talks
Obviously Joshua and Vernon did most of the talking, but DK, Hoshi, and Seungkwan certainly spoke as well since they are the more talkative members anyways. It was very nice that they tried to speak in English and they even joked around and kept the mood up throughout the concert. Mingyu also spoke a bit, but all the other members said little/nothing after introducing themselves. That’s understandable though since they’re usually the quieter ones and you can’t expect a group that big to have every member talk much. There were only a few talking segments during the entire concert, but that’s fine since that meant there was more time for performances.
Songs/Performances
Although the setlist included all Seventeen’s classics, there were some other songs that I wished they performed. But I’m sure there were reasons for their song choices, especially since S.Scoups wasn’t there, their discography has gotten pretty big, and the large gap between this tour and the last one made certain songs too “old” to be in a concert at this point (I definitely appreciated DK singing a tiny bit of Popular Song, though!). Either way, the songs were still good and the dancing was on point the whole time.
One embarrassing problem I had was during the Vocal Team’s part of the concert. Granted, I’m not a big fan of that team’s songs but I wasn’t expecting to be so lost during their stage (I only kind of recognized one song which turned out to be Hug >_<). I had only heard part of Chilli before, but I enjoyed that performance and I like the song more because of it. Plus, the Hip Hop Team’s remixed version of Trauma was good. The Performance Team delivered and the sash performance of Lilly Yabba was nice. The full group performances were all well done and entertaning. Although I would’ve liked to see Hit performed with its choreography, I like that Seventeen used their last few songs to just work the stage. And, the Very Nice fake endings were such a playful and fun way to wrap up the show.
Conclusion
It was great to see Seventeen live on stage. Even though I was tired from work and ticked off by the stage lighting issue, I didn’t lose my voice or get very dehydrated because I know better now. Regardless of any of my problems, I hope everyone had a wonderful time. Seventeen, fighting!

Well to be honest, I’ve neglected this blog, and I probably would have continued if one of the new cadets who joined last month mentioned that they’d actually read it (cheers Andy!) so I decided that I should probably give it an update now I’ve got some free time. So, without banging on too much, what’s going on now?
Well I finished my sea time. I paid off my final ship yesterday after a long five and a half month stint. In a strange way I wouldn’t say that it’s any worse than doing four months – at that point, you’re committed to the ship life, so you just take it day by day. I’ll talk about that more in a future post, for now let’s talk about my second sea trip.
I finished college one week into August and a week later I was joining the Anvil Point in Marchwood. Being one of Foreland’s point class vessel I knew what to expect so I wasn’t too apprehensive. Upon arrival I was told that we were heading out to Duqm (Oman) via Duress (Albania) as part of the Saif Sereea exercise after a short stay in Devonport, Plymouth. So, what is Saif Sereea 3? Here’s a heavily condensed explanation taken from the Royal Navy website:
“Saif Sereea is a joint British-Omani military exercise intend to reinforce the relationships between Britain and Oman. The overall aim of the exercise was to test the UK’s expeditionary warfare strategy and maintain strategic relationships with our allies in the Persian Gulf. Involved in the operation was the HMS Albion, HMS Dragon, HMS Blyth, HMS Ledbury, RFA Cardigan Bay, RFA Lyme Bay and us, the MV Anvil Point.” Duqm (despite essentially being a carpark in the desert) is an important place to hold as it is a fantastic loading/offloading port, offers growing dry dock facilities and is situation in a prime spot for any action involving the red sea, the gulf of oman or the suez canal.
The trip started normal enough – the obligatory few rough days across the Bay of Biscay followed by an easy sail passed Gibralta and into the Mediterranean. Our first port of call, Durres, is one of the largest cities in Albania. The berth was situated right in the city centre meaning that you could go from cabin to cold beer in under three minutes – not bad at all!
Duress is what I’d call a developing city – it’s going through a period of redevelopment following the economies collapse in the late 90’s and a short period of literal anarchy in ’97. As such, you can go from well developed touristy area to less developed areas including half finished buildings and squats within a street or two. The conversion rate was definitely in our favour – you could enjoy a three course meal plus a few beers in some of Trip Advisors top ranking restaurants for under twenty quid which was great. Every other store seemed to be either a coffee shop or an ice cream stand (costing around 80p and £1.40 each) with both being really high quality. All in all, if you enjoy your food and you’re in the area already (it probably isn’t worth a trip alone) then it’s worth a visit! The amphitheater, one of the oldest in Europe, is well worth the £1.50 entrance fee, if only to soak in the surrealness of standing in a building originally built during the second century AD whilst simultaneously being surrounded by housing. Luckily the Albanian government are looking into treating it as the area of historical importance that it deserves to be but I can’t see anything happening soon. Meanwhile, sadly, it slowly falls into disrepair.
After hurrying across the med with a storm on our stern we moor up at Port Said for the night. Port Said is the entrance to the Suez Canal – as soon as day starts to break we pick up anchor and begin to lead the convoy through. The Suez Canal is a sea level waterway opened in 1869, providing a direct route between the North Atlantic and the North Indian oceans via the Mediterranean. It is of great convenience to seafarers, removing the need to sail around the horn of Africa and brave the South Atlantic and shaving over four days off of most middle east to europe journeys. An average of 47 ships traverse the 120 mile canal every day. The Suez itself will take about 10 hours to transit, but still requires three separate pilots. On one side you have Egypt – for the most part desert, occasionally broken up by military bases and statues – and on the other, Israel, a combination of more desert, 80% finished but completely derelict cities, small towns and the occasional expensive looking resort. One of the most notable sights is the Mubarak Peace Bridge. Despite only being opened in 2001, today this 2.4 mile bridge is unused, becoming little more than a photo opportunity and an entry into numerous ship’s log books. It’s an exciting transit the first time you do it, but by the third time it loses it’s appeal.
Around a week later we arrived in Duqm – visually, it looks like a cross between a car park, a DIY military base and a very isometric scrap metal yard. Over the next few days the rest of the task force arrived, filling the port with grey ships. Over the next few weeks we would spend our time delivering equipment to the task force, conducting maintenance alongside, sitting at anchor and occasionally taking part in exercises (although this rarely extended beyond slowly sailing around a designated square whilst the liaison officer took part via comms). One big issue we had was the lack of any real speed – eventually we began to run out of fresh water (we can only generate our own when sailing at over 8 knots), requiring us to take on fresh water from the quay side. It was drinkable but it wasn’t the clearest or freshest I’ve ever tried, and it certainly had a tint by the time we got back to the UK.
One perk from our time in Duqm (aside from the tan) was getting to visit the RFA Cardigan Bay (thanks to my classmate Rich who was also taking part) and the minesweeper Ledbury. Both offered very different seafaring experiences – the Bay felt very much like a hive city whilst the Ledbury was very old fashioned and claustrophobic (well, it is almost forty years old). We also made it over to Container Town – a rough town operated out of… well, check the pictures, containers – that only really opens when there’s enough ships in to make it viable. With over 5 military ships and us around... it was definitely worth opening the bar. We stayed for a couple, rinsed the wifi and got a pizza from the pizza hut container (yes, they even had a franchised pizza hut guy!) before heading back to the ship. It’s no London but after three weeks of Duqm heat it was a great change of pace.
The journey back was uneventful. And there’s a hard truth in that – back home, everyone will assume that each trip will contain some great story, but this is a job, like any other job and some trips are just…uneventful.
Now, my company will do it’s best to pay it’s trainee’s off in Marchwood. It’s simple (being a uk port) and cheaper (as they don’t have to buy international plane tickets) so it’s a bit of a no brainer. In all honesty, it works for me – I can be home within 2 to 3 hours so it isn’t actually a bad home port. However, this time I was to sail with the Anvil to Gibralta, enjoy a night on the town, and fly back the next day. Seeing as I’d only flown once in my life at this point, that was quite exciting.
I can see why sailors get excited when a Gib stop is planned. It’s so convenient! The port is only ten minutes walk from the town, everything is in pounds, home from home mobile internet access and the place in general feels like a mixture of Spain and England. We moored up at midday and by one we’d finished unloading our miniscule amount of cargo, leaving us with time to explore! I broke off from the group and decided to climb the rock myself – I didn’t make it to the top but I did stumble across Jew’s Gate Cemetery where I called it a day and wandered back into town.
One boozy night later (sensibly I decided to skip the casino) and I’m ready to fly back home. With a chronic lack of flat ground in Gibralta, their airport is built along their border with spain and the runway essentially leads to the ocean. It’s quite a surreal feeling, watching the plane speeding towards the water before pulling up. In terms of training, this was a bit of a strange trip – we actually did very little consistent sailing or cargo work, but the amount of time spent alongside or at anchor gave me a lot of time to learn on the hands on element of the third mates job. It is easy to become complacent when things are quiet for a while so I’d advise making a list of what TRB tasks you can be finished in any time period and being proactive in finding (or creating) opportunities to do so. I probably could have been more forthcoming with what I needed to complete and returned with a fuller TRB, which would have made the new trip easier, but due to the nature of this run there were some parts which just weren’t going to get done. Still, that’s easy to be said in hindsight – the trip certainly felt full on at the time!
My next post will probably be split into two and a 5 ½ month trip is a bit too large for one blog post before I reflect on dissertations, finishing your TRB and making the most of the time you’ve got.
Until next time,
Stay lucky.

After a brief detour through Shanghai, London, and Berlin, it's time to land on Dai Teikoku Gekijou once again. The stage is set for our main cast to take the spotlight! Furthermore, these 5 songs (Track 7 to 11), are representative of each character's personality, traits, or even backstory (so... SPOILER alert?). Basically, the meat of this album. You'll likely hear these tunes in full once you've successfully secured their solo endings, right? And throughout, the BGM version usually accompanies them during the playthrough. Let the song show begins!
Otome Nandesu yo (I'm a Maiden) by. Sakura Amamiya (Ayane Sakura)
First on the lineup, is the leading lady herself, Sakura. And, I'm not sure how to put it, but from a purely subjective viewpoint, it's my LEAST favorite of this set. Elise left a big shoe to fill following her one-woman Opera. And Sakura just couldn't keep it together, that we had to step down into an idol-mode or some sort. Sorry, no offense to idol fans out there! Different people, different tastes, and my idol phase had gone over the rainbow. If I have to be honest, I only heard the short MV I posted above (first one released) only a few times, before forgetting about it completely. I can't really understand why. Perhaps, it sounded generic? Sakura Shinguuji's image songs weren't a stand out in "Sakura Taisen" and "Sakura Taisen 2" either. Nevertheless, I enjoyed both "Sakura" and "Haru ga Kuru". I have even recorded my own covers for those two songs! They told the tale of naivety and sincerity, of a country girl who went to the big city and burdened with the fate to be a hero. Comparing those to New Sakura's solo is unnecessarily unfair, but it also can't be helped. What is the message of this song? It's about a girl who reunites with her childhood friend (Captain Seijuurou, who else). But she's no longer fond of the idea of him seeing her as a younger sister figure. But she couldn't say it, because *drumrolls*, she's now a maiden. My memory is fuzzy, but I believe Kouhei Tanaka-sensei had already confirmed that this is, in fact, an "Imouto" song. Hence the reason why my interest is not that high. Fortunately, the song took a delightful tone the moment that harmonica came along (which was after the first chorus, on the 1:30 mark). I actually DID enjoy it more because of it. I also liked the bridge part, and how the final result sounded less like a pop song. But that final line? Why did it feel needy and/or desperate? *sigh* Oh well, at least Sakura already did wonders with "Shin GEKITEI". I admit Part 3 doesn't really start off on the right foot. But worry not! It definitely gets better...
Onna!! Matsuri no Kokoro Iki (Woman!! The Spirit of the Festival) by. Hatsuho Shinonome (Maaya Uchida)
Time to get fired up again! And seriously, I dare you not to shake your body or smile as soon as this song begins. Because you certainly would! On a glance, this sounded and showed the traces of being the Kanna Kirishima's style of the new generation. But with one obvious twist: It's... AWESOME!!! Kanna is a good character, but her solo numbers rarely appealed to my taste. Suffice to say, this song took the best parts of her numbers and blended it into one spot. I've always loved this song ever since the MV came out. And this full, almost-5-minutes, version with extra arrangements just sounded... MINDBLOWING. One would argue that a bulk of this song was instrumental, with Maaya Uchida as the Matsuri's (Festival) Miko shouting her commanding cues. That is undeniably true. But listen closely, and you'll get why I or anyone would dig this. If you have been keeping up with me, you'll know that traditional tunes from various countries fascinate me. So it should come natural that I'm a sucker to festival songs like this. Especially with that mix of heavy metal rock guitar building up towards the dynamic duo of the energizing Taiko beat and an iconic whistling of Shakuhachi that added the authenticity of things. Wagakki Band, anyone? Aaaaaahhhhh... and Kouhei-sensei just HAD to slip in that speedy CRAZY-sounding piano bit! *applause* Just like Lancelot's song, this made me feel like I was being transported to Tokyo or Kyoto, attending and witnessing an actual Summer celebration. Uchida, a good singer, didn't perform this in her smooth vocal style. But she shouldn't! This is something you sing at ease while plainly having fun. Being all out and letting loose is basically the key! For the first time in Sakura Taisen's music history, I've bumped into a song that I simply don't want to sing along. Instead, I would DIE for the chance to participate in that Taiko play. Oh my, I need to see this in a live performance. You TOTALLY need to hear this! And dance along if you will... PS: If there's any gripe about this, it's when Hatsuho and the background voices are yelling "Oisa!" (literally means "Hey!"?). It tends to sound "Oisa, Osa, Usa, USO, USO, USO!". "Uso" means "Lies", and ends up giving it a misogynist feel by accident. The message of this song is that a woman is the spirit of the festival. Girl power! Feminism! But then there's these choir of ALL MALE that seemingly shouts "Lies, Lies, Lies!". That's pretty contradictory, eh? I know I'm totally making too much of a big deal out of this, but it honestly bugs me out...
Ninja Azami (Azami the Ninja) by. Azami Mochizuki (Hibiku Yamamura)
We haven't left Japan, as indicated by another tune of Shakuhachi and Koto, preparing us for the next performer. It's a familiar tune that many have heard in "Naruto", "Ninpuu Sentai Hurricaneger", or other feudal Japan-themed series. And the title had already said it all. This is the biographical description of Azami, as Shin Hanagumi's resident ninja-in-training. But as soon as it entered the verse (as you could hear in the MV), the sensation changed pretty significantly. No longer a serious Shinobi song, it morphed into the franchise's usual playful little girl song. Yes, even though Azami is technically older than Iris Chateaubriand, Coquelicot or Rikaritta Aries! She mentioned her hobby on practicing the various ninja scrolls, and even her love to eat snacks like Manjuu during breaks. Yare yare... With just 3:28 minutes, this is the second shortest song after "Shin GEKITEI". Obviously, the tempo does play a role in that. Hibiku Yamamura is a Sakura Taisen fan, yet she had the shortest solo number in the album. Somewhat ironic, isn't it? Nonetheless, she did a fantastic job. In fact, her unique voice remains consistent throughout the album, and that's worthy to be praised. I liked the traditional Japanese feel in this, but it also had too many speaking lines for my taste. Still, I'll gladly take this bouncy and head-bopping fun tune over Sakura's anytime. PS: Both Yamamura and Ana's VA made guests appearances more than once during the monthly Teigeki Report, which apparently will still going next year (probably until the TV series airs?). So you can hear them sharing personal experiences and stories on those videos. It's insightful, that's for sure!
Kaereru Basho (A Place to Return to) by. Anastasia Palma (Ayaka Fukuhara)
Goodness! I've been itching to arrive to this song. A good song is one that tells a story. Just like the previous songs, this one does the same, but with a deeper meaning and values. Ana is most definitely the "sexy Onee-san" archetype of this game, complete with having a curvaceous figure (reminds me of Rangiku in "BLEACH", wait a sec...). But personality-wise, the Greek lady gave off this mysterious, unpredictable vibe. She's like a mix of mature Maria Tachibana, with a vibe of Glycine Bleumer and Soletta Orihime's European presence, but with a cloudy past of Hanabi Kitaouji, and the hidden sides of Reni Milchstrasse or Subaru Kujou. If I had to describe it in one word, she's puzzling. However, there's one trait that she's been constantly identified with: she's an actress. It thoroughly commanded the message of the lyrics. But I digress. Was the whole song really all about Ana's passion for acting? There seemed to be more than meet the eye. From what I gather, there's an underlying hint of a journey of sadness, past events or eras that had emerged and faded, beloved people that had come and gone. In short, she basically acted her way through the ups and downs of her life. A coping mechanism, perhaps? Laughing away loneliness, a facade of her true emotions. And what did she mean by "A Place to Return to"? Was it the stage, or acting, or just like many of previous Sakura Taisen's heroine: someone to go home to? Or someone who can finally discover and understand her real self? I need to either play the game or watch the TV series to confirm that. Now that I'm older (and wiser? Naaaah), this is my idea of a good song. It asks you to listen, pay attention, and also feel challenged to try to figure it out. This was the longest Shin Hanagumi and solo song of the album. You'll understand why it needed to be that long to be good. The moment that alluring piano intro kicked in, and the violin started to seep in, it's classy and elegant as hell. Ayaka Fukuhara stated that this was a challenge to sing, and indeed it is. It should be. Even though the vocal range wasn't as demanding as Elise's opera, the pitch work was exceptional! She gradually went from a lower tone to higher and higher. It sounded like the aura of the room changed every time another verse began (due to the modulation, as well as the flow of passion and emotions), seemingly depicting Ana's many masks. And those sharp notes? Oh my, oh my, OH MY!!! No wonder Subaru's VA, Mie Sonozaki (who is a prolific singer herself) congratulated Fukuhara on doing such a fine job. This is another highlight of the album for me and my favorite Shin Hanagumi character song by far. Now, where can I get the off-vocal version? Because I totally want to try singing this song... PS: Similar to Elise, voice-wise, Ana is one of my favorites due to her range and distinct pronunciation style. She can go mezzo-soprano and heavy, but also high and soprano. I strongly enjoyed that versatility is utilized wonderfully in this song.
Rondo (Round Dance) by. Clarissa Snowflake (Saori Hayami)
You're watching a European-based fairy tale romance. What happens at the end, when the one true love has been found and all evil that stands in the way has perished? They hold a gala, where everyone waltzes into a happily ever after... That is the core of this whole song, a composition that Kouhei-sensei described it as feeling "like a movie". As a character, Claris fancies herself reading books (nerd alert! Hahaha), and I think many of her scenes in the game takes place in the library. But she also writes stories and loves to fantasize about a paradise filled with mermaids and magical elements. Perhaps because she alone wields a magic book. And her dream is to dance with someone while surrounded by those things. Those are the essence of the simple but poetic lyrics. I admit, when I first heard it, I was taken aback by the decision to putting this track as the final Hanagumi song. But now it makes perfect sense. It easily serves as a calm and astonishingly perfect capper to a series of solo songs, a grand celebration to conclude a colorful parade. My knowledge of reed or woodwind instruments is poor, so I couldn't tell if it was an Ocarina or another type that played in the intro. I'm not sure if that's native to Luxembourg too. One thing for sure, the medieval melody would naturally pierce through your soul, until that graceful combo of Lute or acoustic guitar (again, sorry if I'm bad at names) and harp soothed you into a more familiar space. Then suddenly, the song changed tone halfway through and turned into full folk song mode. Yes, the Kouhei-sensei style I told you before. Someone on Youtube mentioned that this reminded him/her of Disney's "Tangled". Well, I can attest that the catchy interlude was very true to that notion. To think that this song arrived while "Frozen 2" is still playing. Such a great coincidence! Saori Hayami is a great singer, known for her gorgeous legato siren-like vocals. Just like Ana (oh hey, fellow non-Japanese Shin Hanagumi), I'm beyond happy that this song fully made use of her unique charm. Especially once it got into that royal ballroom dance chorus, reminiscent of Orihime's image song. It didn't take long for me to imagine Claris as the protagonist, dancing with her prince (or princess, if that's her thing. Right, Hallmark?) in a grand finale of her fictional story. Speaking of which, I'm still confused as to why Hayami's name is always placed at the end. Even though the promotions clearly showed that Claris is one of the first members of the team. Could it be that she's a "special cast member" type, like in Hollywood movies? That would make sense... Another highlight of the album, another personal favorite (that I've been humming and singing unconsciously on repeat), this clocked as the second-longest solo of the album. But just like the previous number, I doubt anyone would complain. You only need to close your eyes and just start swaying left to right, back, and front. Take your beloved person's hand, embrace him/her tightly, and just follow the musical flow. Dance the day or night away, with much joy and passion! PS: The official MV wrote the title as "RONDE". I still go with "RONDO" because pretty sure that's a typo, considering even the French (one of Luxembourg's official language) equivalent is "RONDEAU". Rondo itself is a musical form that refers to a theme that keeps coming back around. But in Japanese, the kanji can also be read as "RINBU" which means "Round Dance".
