London Will Burn - A Sean Wallace/OFC Story.
I couldn't wait to share this with you, besties. Here, have the first chapter! I know that Sean is pretty niche as he doesn't seem to have all too huge a fandom, but if I can garner a few readers, and you guys could help me out by reblogging this, I would be very appreciative. Commentary is very welcome, as usual, so yes, dive on in and hopefully enjoy! If you like it enough, you can have chapter two sooner rather than later, too :)
The story begins seven years in the past, but will then run semi-canon to the Gangs of London plot and timeframe.

May 24th, 2016.
Coffee, the financial times and resounding quiet. These were the defining components needed for Finn Wallace to begin each day within the spatial surroundings of his corner office, the floor to ceiling windows offering the widest view of the city he ruled over with an iron fist.
“Mr Wallace, please. Sir...”
The words of Minnie, his secretary, delivered outside of his office with mildly pleading desperation tore his attention from fastidiously studying the FTSE 100, Finn looking out from above the pink sheets of paper. He witnessed her scurrying along, her eyes pleading while trying to match the long strides of his son as he approached. “You know your father doesn’t like to be bothered...”
...between the hours of eight and nine. He needed a full hour with nothing but a newspaper and a good supply of anything that came from Whittard of Chelsea prior to starting his day. His son had other ideas that morning, though.
Placing his coffee down, he lifted his chin as Sean strode through the doors, a heap of paperwork within his grasp.
“One print off of the e-contract signed late last night by Kevin Cavanagh, and one verbal assurance that the vessels may port within his dock space for the original agreed amount.” The paperwork hit the desk so hard, it was almost splashed in coffee, Sean looking thoroughly pleased with himself. As he should, his father thought. Kevin had been extremely tricky in this, his son’s first solo deal for the company.
Reaching for the contract, Finn could scarcely believe it, but there it was. K. Cavanagh. Signed, sealed and delivered. “How the fuck did you swing that, boyo?”
Kevin Cavanagh had shown himself to be a rather large thorn in the side of the Wallace empire for weeks, the investor digging his heels in over their proposed deal, an influx of two hundred million sterling into the company’s legitimate holdings to fund the proposed apartment complex they wished to build, and a grant of passage for boats containing large shipments of heroin porting from Pakistan to enter his docks.
The terms and conditions set by Sean had been made clear, but having the upper hand in it all, Kevin had gone back on their proposed arrangement out of sheer greed. It had not gone down well at all. Especially since Finn considered Kevin to be a long-standing friend as well as a business associate. He wasn’t about to involve himself, though. It was Sean’s deal, and he had to learn in going it alone, friend or not.
In their world, though, alliance and friendship were subject to change at any given moment. Friendships aside, Sean had been advised by his father to do whatever it took to secure the deal by the required deadline, which had passed at midnight the night before.
Looking upon his son expectantly, Finn was under no illusion over Sean’s self-satisfied pride in his achievement. His poise did not slip, though. Not even for a second. “I have my ways, all of them effective.”
He raised an eyebrow. “How?”
His son smirked, the same bloody smirk he’d had since he was three, back when he’d usually hoodwinked his mother into the offering of a second reach into the biscuit tin. “If you knew that, then you’d know as much as me.”
Finn felt himself losing patience at his allusivity, but couldn’t quite keep the grin from spreading across his face. “Wiley little shit.”
He chuckled, checking his watch. “I have a meeting to get to. Lunch at The Strand, 1pm? I have a table booked. See you then.”
“If I’m late, order my usual.” Looking over the contract once again, Finn rested his chin upon the pinch of his thumb and forefinger. If he’d gotten a result without them having to yield to Kevin, it surely didn’t matter how Sean had procured the deal.
As time would tell, though, it would.
Striding from the building, Sean climbed into the waiting car, ready to be whisked across London for a viewing on another apartment complex currently under construction. It would take up most of his morning, but such was the nature of his role within the company. Build big, reap big, remain on top.
Leaning back against the plush leather upholstery within the black Mercedes, Sean winced, feeling the soreness that remained from his weekend of sexual hedonism. Clawed scratches marking the freckled alabaster of his back from his shoulders right to the rounded muscles of his arse had certainly felt good at the time, but now the scabbed wounds stung and itched.
That itching sting was experienced internally, too, a rolling wave of cold discomfort washing over his insides once again. Guilt. Maybe even a little remorse. Who’d have thought it? Certainly not him. He had previously considered those emotions to be completely superfluous, with a nature such as his, and most definitely not when his actions had reaped such rewards.
Sean was, if nothing else, completely ruthless in the pursuit of attainment.
His go to in attaining a desired result didn’t always equal the exertion of moral turpitude, but in this instance it very much had. There was no going back on it either. He had struck out, used his bargaining chip of blackmail and garnered the desired results. At twenty-five years old, he’d thought himself perhaps above the actions he’d resorted to, considering his bartering and negotiation skills to be proficient enough.
They hadn’t been.
However, Sean knew that blackmailing Kevin Cavanagh into agreement by threatening to upload a video to the internet of himself fucking his eighteen-year-old daughter would work like a charm in securing a signature, and it had.
He’d understandably been beyond livid with him, after receiving an edited version of the hour-long filming, showing just enough for Kevin to know that Catherine would be subjected to great personal embarrassment and emotional anguish if he didn’t comply.
With his arm figuratively bent up his back, he had agreed, the money immediately transferred, and the contract signed the evening before, once he and his wife had returned from their weekend away. Kevin had also struck a permanent black mark against the son of his old friend, knowing that Finn likely had no part in the blackmail. As chillingly cutthroat as he could be, it wasn’t his style. Words would be had, though, and Sean knew he likely had that coming to him sooner or later.
Just as he would when Catherine caught up with him. He highly doubted Kevin wouldn’t tell her.
Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his phone, placing his earbuds in and locating the video he had promised to delete. He’d been hesitant there, not because he intended to nefariously make good on his threat and upload it anyway, he had no cause to. The reason behind his stalling was much more complex, and not one he was in a hurry to admit. Not even to himself.
Hearing her sweet moans as he watched himself on the screen, face buried between her legs, a jolt ran right through him. He could almost still taste the sweet honey of her cunt on his tongue, feel her skin against his, and with a shift in his seat, experience her nails clawing at his back.
It was only ever meant to happen once. Once had led to an entire weekend, and there it was again, the unpleasant sting rolling through his guts as he closed his eyes and remembered it. Remembered her.
Her... her.
It was only ever meant to happen once...
St Augustine’s Grammar School for Girls was one of the most exclusive private Catholic schools in the entirety of London. For an eye watering yearly fee, it boasted unsurpassed examination results, a sterling OFSTED record, and much to the fury of the young ladies within its prestigious halls, a strict code for uniform. A black skirt to the knee, high black socks, a white shirt and a navy blazer and tie.
Even the students attending the adjoining sixth form college had to still adhere, much to their loathing. For Catherine Cavanagh, as soon as she was out of the front gates with her friends, adjustments were made.
Her neatly pleated skirt was rolled over a few times to hitch it up, her folded over socks pulled up until they came over the knee, her blazer and tie stuffed into her bag and her shirt undone to reveal a little of the black lace bra she wore beneath, as well as being knotted at the waist. She liked to show off some of what she had.
Lashings of smoky black eyeliner were applied, her lips liberally glossed and her shoulder length blonde waves all shook free of their ponytail prison before she sauntered away, ready for a coffee with her friends, of whom also made similar adjustments to their own uniforms. They were young women at eighteen, all mildly incensed that they still had to stick to the rules of their frigidly stalwart school.
Catherine, or Rin as she preferred to be called, was far from frigid.
“Oi darlin’! Fancy gettin’ in the back of me van and lettin’ me give ya one, eh?”
Ugh. Builders. The worst of the worst for shouting pervy obscenities from the open window of a slowed down Ford Transit. She immediately rolled her eyes. “No thanks, but I fancy giving you this.” Raising her middle finger, her confident smirk grew, her friends cheering on her usual chutzpah.
“Fuck you, then! Little slag!”
Rin snorted. “You wish, mate.”
“I don’t get it,” Rashida, her bestie mused, fiddling with her necklace as she cocked her head. “He wanted to shag you five seconds ago, and now you’re a slag because you didn’t take him up on his offer?” Her face was a picture of bemused disgust as she barked a laugh. “Wanker.”
“Yeah, sums him up. Right, let’s hit the coffee house. I’m fucking gasping for something strong, hot and foamy.”
Their friend Carly couldn’t help but pipe up, laughing at her own joke before she’d even spoken it aloud. “What, you want the big fella from Game of Thrones in a bubble bath? What’s his name?”
“Tormund,” Rin confirmed, her eyes dreamy. “You know I’m weak as fuck for a redhead!”
While the prospect of Kristofer Hivju, the actor who played the aforementioned character awaiting her in a bubble bath was preferred, it was a double shot cappuccino she needed most at that moment. After a day of hard studying for her ongoing A Levels, Rin needed the coffee like air. For no other reason than to stay awake for the duration of her journey home.
She wouldn’t be driving, though. Yet to pass her test, she would simply call for a driver in the employment of her father to collect her when she was ready. Being rich certainly had its perks. Entering the coffee shop a ten-minute walk from the school gates, she paid for her order and stood back to wait, sensing someone behind her before a familiar voice spoke into her ear.
“I am unsure whether your mother would approve of that skirt, young lady.”
Turning, her eyes widened. “Bloody hell! Hello!” It had been at least five years since she’d seen Sean Wallace other than fleeting moments in passing, the last proper time being when he was home from university in his final year. The occasion had been when her parents had thrown a garden party for her father’s friends and closest business associates, plus their families.
“How are you, darling?” He drawled smoothly, kissing her cheek as they exchanged a brief hug. “It’s been a bloody age.” Looking down upon her, his gaze was nothing but clearly appreciative, thinking just what a beautiful young woman she’d become. In fact, beautiful was an understatement; she was an absolute knock out.
In any other circumstance, Catherine Cavanagh would be his perfect match. She came from a similar family, steeped in criminality and staggeringly wealthy, with the best education money could buy, just as he himself had received. They were cut from the exact same cloth, she and Sean. This was not an exercise in procuring the perfect match long-term, though. Far from it.
“It has, I was just thinking that myself,” she confirmed as they parted, feeling a little flustered. Oh, how she’d always fancied the arse off Sean. She might have been extremely confident for an elder teen, much more woman than girl in that respect, but still. Sean was the bloody holy grail as far as she was concerned. “As for me, up to my eyes in all things A Levels, only two more exams left and then its fingers crossed I do well enough to take the provisional place I’ve been offered at LSE.”
He remembered that the London School of Economics had been her long-term goal from the last time he’d spoken to her at length, back when she was just a kid of thirteen. “I remember you telling me, yes. Forgive me, but I forget just what it is you were aiming for?”
A flutter delighted her insides at that, how he hadn’t forgotten her desires to attend LSE when it had been so long since they’d last talked in depth. She’d thought he’d merely been entertaining her thirteen-year-old self and her long-winded plans for her future, but no. He’d actually listened. Then again, he was always very attentive when engaging with someone, no matter who they were. “BSc in mathematics, statistics and business.”
“I bet your father is very proud,” he commented, Rin turning to pick up her coffee.
“Well, I suppose he will be if I actually pull it off and attain the necessary grades. It’ll stand me in good stead for taking over the family business too, when he eventually retires.” They were birds of a feather in that respect, both primed to one day sit at the helm of their respective family empires. “Speaking of which, how are things with you? You’re doing very well at the Wallace Corporation, according to dad.”
“Your father is correct, I am.” He was still very sure of himself. Anyone else would call it arrogance, but Sean was merely infectiously confident. He knew what he wanted, and he went right after it, Rin completely oblivious to the fact that his cool blue eyes were directly focused upon his present target. “Long hours and probably less pay than I should be garnering, but I must confess to be doing rather well for myself. Especially considering I have only been there just over four years.”
They eventually became so lost in their catch-up chatter that Rin completely failed to realise that her friends had moved to a table, turning to see them wave at her. The looks on their faces spoke volumes.
“I’ll be there in a sec,” she assured them, praying Carly didn’t open her mouth. No such luck.
“No, no,” the girl herself chirped right on cue, waving her hands gently in Rin’s direction. “You stay there with your fancy man; we’ll be over here when you’re ready!”
“Oh, shit off!” she chided, feeling her cheeks burn. Turning to Sean, she shook her head. “They’re embarrassing as fuck.”
“I can’t say I’m embarrassed, being labelled as your fancy man.” Pulling out a seat, he gestured to it with a flirtatious smile, ensuring her heart virtually catapulted against her ribcage. She definitely blushed furiously at that. Ahh, it was almost too easy, but then again Sean’s charm was legendarily flawless. Being well spoken, powerful, and as dangerous as he was gorgeous didn’t hurt either.
A red-haired bad boy in a Balmain suit. If Rin had a type at all in this world, it was Sean Wallace. And boy, how the man himself saw that loud and clear.
“So, I hear your parents are away in France right now?”
“Yes,” Rin confirmed, the smidgen of envy in her voice clear. How she would have loved a long weekend in the French Alps skiing, too. “They’ll be hurtling down a mountain right now, while I’m stuck here in dreary London, slogging my guts out all in the name of revision.”
He smirked, picking up his espresso and sipping it. Sean liked his coffee one way; strong and black. “Ah, but you do get Mulford Hall all to yourself for the weekend. Quite the party palace, one would assume.”
She crinkled her nose, shaking her head. “The staff will grass me up if I even so much as open a can of cider with more than four friends in attendance. Mother dearest likes to keep her fucking tabs on me.” Rin didn’t dislike her mother, but it was no secret that she was daddy’s girl through and through. If he had his way, he’d have arranged for the antiques to be removed from banquet hall and allowed she and her friends run wild. Diane was not quite so lenient.
Yes. A banquet hall. The Cavanagh’s were truly that wealthy, to have such in their fifteen-bedroom, eighteen-bathroom, sprawling abode located in Westminster, just around the corner from Hyde Park. Half of their sprawling gardens backed onto the park itself, in fact.
Mostly, Mulford Hall was used as a successful wedding and events venue, half of the house sectioned off as a private family residence and inaccessible to the public, also being a historical location of interest for tourists. It had been in her family for centuries, gifted to one of her ancestors, the very first Lord Mulford by King Charles I. Now with no elder male heir and her grandparents having passed on, it remained in the family by the residing Lady Mulford, her mother.
“I suppose the little ones would have plenty to say, even if the staff did keep schtum.” Oh yes, Sean was correct there. Her younger brother and sisters would likely relish in telling on her to their parents. Keeping secrets that did not directly benefit them was not in the interests of your average twelve, ten and nine year old children. “I mean, if they could even hear the sounds of partying. Does your mother not keep them in a turret or similar?”
She snorted laughing into her coffee, spraying a fine mist of foam from the large cup, “Shut up, you shit. You know we’re not that grand.” Suddenly, she felt the cold wave of discomfort when he frowned, wondering if she’d pushed it a little in calling him a shit, even in tease. After all, they did not know each other beyond the boundaries of acquaintance. It was their parents who were friends, not them.
He then reached, wiping a fleck of foam from her cheek, the corners of his mouth upturning as he watched her blush, leaning across the table. “It takes a brave person to refer to me as a shit.”
Regaining her confidence, she licked her top lip, shrugging lightly. “Or a gobby little twat such as myself.”
She was a pistol. He enjoyed that perhaps more than he should have. He laughed softly through his nose, sipping his coffee again as she continued. “I actually have the place to myself, staff aside. The nanny has taken the little terrors to Legoland for the weekend, and there aren’t any weddings on, so I’m enjoying pottering around the old pile in my pants.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Just your pants?”
“I like to give the gardeners something nice to look at.”
God, and how nice her body was, he wagered, his eyes sweeping her momentarily. “I bet you do.”
Lust. Lust delivered from behind full, long auburn lashes tinged with gold, eyes that burned like cool fire as he stared her dead in the eye, Rin feeling as if she was caught in a searchlight she could not avoid. Not that she’d want to. Being illuminated by the desire of Sean Wallace was something she’d only ever fantasised about as a girl. As a young woman, acting upon it now seemed within her grasp.
And grasp for it she would. “You’re thinking about me in nothing but my pants, aren’t you?”
Playful, yet direct. He liked that, liked that she was so easily wandering right into the jaws of his trap with such little effort. “I am.”
She leaned closer, watching him retrieve a packet of mints from his pocket, placing one into his mouth. The way he so effortlessly pressed the white disc onto his tongue made her shiver, imagining the skill a mouth that clever and effortlessly cool might possess. He offered the packet, but she shook her head, the strongness of Trebor’s finest too much for her delicate tastebuds. “What else are you thinking?”
He mirrored her, leaning near, eyes fixed unblinkingly as he ran his fingertip in a circle over the back of her hand. It was an action that made every single hair upon her arm stand on end. “I’m thinking that the next thing I want on my tongue is you.”
Fireworks exploded in her chest and gut, a fizz of excitement glittering. Unexpected afternoon sex; it was a proposal most definitely to her liking. “Where’s closer, mine or yours?”
“Mine,” he confirmed, rising from his seat as he pulled out his phone. “Westminster is a fucking ball ache of a drive at this time in the day.”
He wasn’t wrong. While Sean called his driver, giving him the name of the coffee shop, Rin made a phone motion to her friends while mouthing ‘I’ll call later’, Rashida and Carly looking as alert as two meerkats keeping the watch at seeing their friend leave with the handsome young mystery man.
Rashida couldn’t help the joke she made. It was too uncanny. “Little slag.”
“Love you too, you knob.” Leaving to the sound of her friend's laughter, Rin joined Sean at the side of the curb, only waiting a few moments for the sleek, black Mercedes to pull up before them. He opened the door for her, Rin sliding in and moving across so he didn’t have to walk around, Sean climbing in and shutting the door with a soft clunk.
“Home please, Tony.” he spoke to the driver, his eyes remaining ahead. She turned slightly to view him, feeling somewhat uneasy when he didn’t return her glance. Dropping her gaze, her thoughts began to race a little, jumping slightly when after a few moments, she felt his hand press to her thigh.
It was a plan of effortless execution, Sean tracking her movements from afar for a few days prior, learning her daily routine. It truly had been as simple as turning up at her regular coffee shop prior to her usual time of arrival, turning on the charm and reaping the rewards. Leaning close, his beard tickled her earlobe, sending a thrill right through her. “I can’t wait to put my mouth between these fantastic legs of yours.”
Neither could she.

What would you want to tell the next U.S. president? FP asked nine thinkers from around the world to write a letter with their advice for him or her.
Dear Madam or Mr. President,
Congratulations on your election as president of the United States. You take office at a moment of enormous consequence for a world directly impacted by the twin challenges of energy security and climate change.
Democrats and Republicans disagree on many aspects of energy and climate policy. Yet your administration has the chance to chart a policy path forward that unites both parties around core areas of agreement to advance the U.S. national interest.
First, all should agree that climate change is real and worsening. The escalating threat of climate change is increasingly evident to anyone walking the streets of Phoenix in the summer, buying flood insurance in southern Florida, farming rice in Vietnam, or laboring outdoors in Pakistan. This year will almost certainly surpass 2023 as the warmest year on record.
Second, just as the energy revolution that made the United States the world’s largest oil and gas producer strengthened it economically and geopolitically, so will ensuring U.S. leadership in clean energy technologies enhance the country’s geostrategic position. In a new era of great-power competition, China’s dominance in certain clean energy technologies—such as batteries and cobalt, lithium, graphite, and other critical minerals needed for clean energy products—threatens America’s economic competitiveness and the resilience of its energy supply chains. China’s overcapacity in manufacturing relative to current and future demand undermines investments in the United States and other countries and distorts demand signals that allow the most innovative and efficient firms to compete in the global market.
Third, using less oil in our domestic economy reduces our vulnerability to global oil supply disruptions, such as conflict in the Middle East or attacks on tankers in the Red Sea. Even with the surge in U.S. oil production, the price of oil is set in the global market, so drivers feel the pain of oil price shocks regardless of how much oil the United States imports. True energy security comes from using less, not just producing more.
Fourth, energy security risks extend beyond geopolitics and require investing adequately in domestic energy supply to meet changing circumstances. Today, grid operators and regulators are increasingly warning that the antiquated U.S. electricity system, already adjusting to handle rising levels of intermittent solar and wind energy, is not prepared for growing electricity demand from electric cars, data centers, and artificial intelligence. These reliability concerns were evident when an auction this summer set a price nine times higher than last year’s to be paid by the nation’s largest grid operator to power generators that ensure power will be available when needed. A reliable and affordable power system requires investments in grids as well as diverse energy resources, from cheap but intermittent renewables to storage to on-demand power plants.
Fifth, expanding clean energy sectors in the rest of the world is in the national interest because doing so creates economic opportunities for U.S. firms, diversifies global energy supply chains away from China, and enhances U.S. soft power in rapidly growing economies. (In much the same way, the Marshall Plan not only rebuilt a war-ravaged Europe but also advanced U.S. economic interests, countered Soviet influence, and helped U.S. businesses.) Doing so is especially important in rising so-called middle powers, such as Brazil, India, or Saudi Arabia, that are intent on keeping their diplomatic options open and aligning with the United States or China as it suits them transactionally.
To prevent China from becoming a superpower in rapidly growing clean energy sectors, and thereby curbing the benefits the United States derives from being such a large oil and gas producer, your administration should increase investments in research and development for breakthrough clean energy technologies and boost domestic manufacturing of clean energy. Toward these ends, your administration should quickly finalize outstanding regulatory guidance to allow companies to access federal incentives. Your administration should also work with the other side of the aisle to provide the market with certainty that long-term tax incentives for clean energy deployment—which have bipartisan support and have already encouraged historic levels of private investment—will remain in place. Finally, your administration should work with Congress to counteract the unfair competitive advantage that nations such as China receive by manufacturing industrial products with higher greenhouse gas emissions. Such a carbon import tariff, as proposed with bipartisan support, should be paired with a domestic carbon fee to harmonize the policy with that of other nations—particularly the European Union’s planned carbon border adjustment mechanism.
Your ability to build a strong domestic industrial base in clean energy will be aided by sparking more domestic clean energy use. This is already growing quickly as market forces respond to rapidly falling costs. Increasing America’s ability to produce energy is also necessary to maintain electricity grid reliability and meet the growing needs of data centers and AI. To do so, your administration should prioritize making it easier to build energy infrastructure at scale, which today is the greatest barrier to boosting U.S. domestic energy production. On average, it takes more than a decade to build a new high-voltage transmission line in the United States, and the current backlog of renewable energy projects waiting to be connected to the power grid is twice as large as the electricity system itself. It takes almost two decades to bring a new mine online for the metals and minerals needed for clean energy products, such as lithium and copper.
The permitting reform bill recently negotiated by Sens. Joe Manchin and John Barrasso is a good place to start, but much more needs to be done to reform the nation’s permitting system—while respecting the need for sound environmental reviews and the rights of tribal communities. In addition, reforming the way utilities operate in the United States can increase the incentives that power companies have not just to build new infrastructure but to use existing infrastructure more efficiently. Such measures include deploying batteries to store renewable energy and rewiring old transmission lines with advanced conductors that can double the amount of power they move.
Grid reliability will also require more electricity from sources that are available at all times, known as firm power. Your administration should prioritize making it easier to construct power plants with advanced nuclear technology—which reduce costs, waste, and safety concerns—and to produce nuclear power plant fuel in the United States. Doing so also benefits U.S. national security, as Russia is building more than one-third of new nuclear reactors around the world to bolster its geostrategic influence. While Russia has been the leading exporter of reactors, China has by far the most reactors under construction at home and is thus poised to play an even bigger role in the international market going forward. The United States also currently imports roughly one-fifth of its enriched uranium from Russia. To counter this by building a stronger domestic nuclear industry, your administration should improve the licensing and approval process of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and reform the country’s nuclear waste management policies. In addition to nuclear power, your administration should also make it easier to permit geothermal power plants, which today can play a much larger role in meeting the nation’s energy needs thanks to recent innovations using technology advanced by the oil and gas sector for shale development.
Even with progress on all these challenges, it is unrealistic to expect that the United States can produce all the clean energy products it needs domestically. It will take many years to diminish China’s lead in critical mineral supply, battery manufacturing, and solar manufacturing. The rate of growth needed in clean energy is too overwhelming, and China’s head start is too great to diversify supply chains away from it if the United States relies solely on domestic manufacturing or that of a few friendly countries. As a result, diminishing China’s dominant position requires that your administration expand economic cooperation and trade partnerships with a vast number of other nations. Contrary to today’s protectionist trends, the best antidote to concerns about China’s clean technology dominance is more trade, not less.
Your administration should also strengthen existing tools that increase the supply of clean energy products in emerging and developing economies in order to diversify supply chains and counter China’s influence in these markets. For example, the U.S. International Development Finance Corp. (DFC) can be a powerful tool to support U.S. investment overseas, such as in African or Latin American projects to mine, refine, and process critical minerals. As DFC comes up for reauthorization next year, you should work with Congress to provide DFC with more resources and also change the way federal budgeting rules account for equity investments; this would allow DFC to make far more equity investments even with its existing funding. Your administration can also use DFC to encourage private investment in energy projects in emerging and developing economies by reducing the risk investors face from fluctuations in local currency that can significantly limit their returns or discourage their investment from the start. The U.S. Export-Import Bank is another tool to support the export of U.S. clean tech by providing financing for U.S. goods and services competing with foreign firms abroad.
Despite this country’s deep divisions and polarization, leaders of both parties should agree that bolstering clean energy production in the United States and in a broad range of partner countries around the world is in America’s economic and security interests.
I wish you much success in this work, which will also be the country’s success.

(April 4, 2024 / JNS)
The growing chorus of voices on the political left that have been loudly demanding that Israel’s war on Hamas be stopped have been waiting for this. After months of seeking to leverage false stories such as one about a missile attack on a hospital, downplaying or denying the way Hamas embeds its terrorist forces in hospitals, schools and civilian homes, and flogging statistics about Palestinian civilian casualties that are clearly bogus, the anti-Israel lobby thinks that it finally has a way to force the Jewish state to stand down in Gaza.
A mistaken strike that caused the deaths of seven World Central Kitchen aid workers who were bringing food and other supplies into the Strip is being treated as not merely a tragic accident all too common in wars, but as an act of transcendent symbolism that proves that Israel’s tactics are too brutal to be allowed to continue.

That was not merely the substance of a torrent of unhinged comments from World Central Kitchen founder Chef José Andrés who, without a shred of proof, accused Israel of deliberately murdering the aid workers. It was also the substance of the threats directed at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by President Joe Biden in a tense 30-minute call. Reportedly, Biden said that future military aid to Israel—vital for the resupply of Israeli forces in order for the war on Hamas to continue—would be linked to whether it satisfies his demands about ensuring that both civilians and aid workers are not harmed.
Backing away from Israel
Biden has been slowly but surely backing away from his initial support for the war and the goal of eradicating Hamas since the Palestinian terrorist group started it with unspeakable atrocities on Oct. 7. The administration has toyed at times with the idea of linking aid to halting the offensive, but never previously acted on the idea, despite the constant urgings of left-wing Democrats to do so. The aid worker incident thus is a turning point as this is the first time that Biden has directly said that he would impose conditions on military assistance.
This takes the dispute between the two governments to a very different and far more dangerous level.
It’s important to be clear about what is happening. While the deaths of the aid workers were the result of a terrible blunder by the Israel Defense Forces, the firestorm of criticism aimed at Israel in the days since the incident occurred isn’t really about their tragic fate, sad though it is.
Nor is it really rooted in a substantive argument claiming that the IDF is failing to take precautions to avoid civilian deaths or to anything to hinder the flow of aid into Gaza, including the area that is still controlled by Hamas. The world’s leading experts on warfare, including John Spencer, the chair of urban warfare studies at West Point, and historian Andrew Roberts, have already declared that not only is Israel upholding the laws of war in its Gaza campaign but has done so in a manner that has caused fewer civilian casualties in such a battle than any in modern history. The claim that Israel has engaged in an “indiscriminate” bombing campaign or is “over the top,” as Biden has claimed, simply isn’t true.
Biden’s hypocrisy
It is also breathtakingly hypocritical.
Mistakes in war always happen as U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—and famously before that, in Korea and Vietnam—proved.
On his first day in office in January 2009, President Barack Obama ordered drone strikes in Waziristan, Pakistan, which led to the deaths of as many as 20 civilians. That would be only the first of 540 strikes on diverse targets in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq in which more than 300 civilians would be killed during his two terms in office, though that number might be underestimated since the strikes were conducted in areas where reporting casualties was not as organized as it is in Gaza. Though Obama would later joke that he had discovered in the White House that “it turns out that I’m really good at killing people,” no one in the corporate press assumed that the Nobel Peace Prize winner was deliberately slaughtering civilians by the dozens as part of a “targeted killings” of terror suspects.
Biden has direct responsibility for killing civilians in error as well.
On Aug. 29, 2021, during the disastrous and humiliating U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, American forces conducted a strike on what they thought was a member of the ISIS-K terror group transporting bombs. They were operating under orders from Washington; however, it turned out to be a tragic mistake, and the missiles launched from MQ-9 Reaper drones killed 10 innocent civilians, including seven children.
While Biden issued a lengthy and passionate statement denouncing the deaths of the seven aid workers, he did no such thing when his own orders led to the accidental deaths of innocents. Instead, he let military officials make the statement about the error and take the fallout while he went to the beach for the weekend.
Of course, Obama and Biden didn’t intend to kill civilians while Americans were trying to take out terrorists. But it happened quite often for the same reasons that this week’s tragedy occurred. Even with the most sophisticated weaponry and satellite imaging of target areas, amid the fog of war, there are no guarantees that even missions fully vetted with great care and intended to take out only combatants will go according to plan.
Indeed, in December, the IDF conceded that about 20% of soldiers that had been killed during the current war were victims of “friendly fire” in which they were mistaken for foes by their own side. Many Americans have died under similar circumstances in wars fought by the United States.
Even when armies take special care to avoid accidents, anyone who enters a combat zone where bullets and bombs are flying is at risk of being killed or wounded. That is always going to be true whether or not those put at risk are combatants or non-combatants.
In the case of the World Central Kitchen victims, the problem, which remains ongoing, is accentuated by the fact that Hamas terrorists lurk near aid convoys since they steal most of what has been brought into Gaza for civilian use. Indeed, it is fairly obvious that if Hamas terrorists weren’t taking the food, fuel and other supplies that have flowed into Gaza with Israeli permission these past six months, there would be no talk about people starving there.
That doesn’t lessen the grief of the families of those who die as a result of errors. But it should put the situation in perspective. Their deaths—like those of everyone else who has been killed since Hamas attacked southern Israel in an orgy of murder, rape, torture, kidnapping and wanton destruction on Oct. 7—are the responsibility of the terrorists and their many supporters.
Letting Hamas win
Though Israeli military and political leaders have had numerous discussions with their American counterparts in which the counter-offensive into Gaza has been criticized, the latter has had no realistic suggestions about how Hamas terrorist forces might be eliminated other than by the methods the Jewish state has been employing. The notion that Hamas can be eliminated without Israeli troops taking physical possession of their last enclave in Rafah in the south and striking at the four remaining intact Hamas battalions there is risible. Therefore, Biden’s demand for “tangible steps” by Israel can only mean one thing: stop the war or conduct it in a manner that ensures that the goal of the complete defeat of Hamas and the end of its control of any part of Gaza cannot be achieved.
That means that if Israel is to continue receiving military aid, it must agree to a situation in which the war against Hamas simply cannot be won. Should Netanyahu decide that those conditions must be accepted, it virtually guarantees that the Islamist group will emerge from the conflict it began not only alive and well but as its victor, with undoubted primacy in Palestinian politics for the foreseeable future.
These conditions are the inevitable result not of the specific incident involving the aid workers but of an incessant campaign of incitement and smears directed at Israel even before ground troops entered Gaza after the Simchat Torah pogroms in 22 Israeli communities and at the Nova music festival.
Biden’s threats are the culmination of the opprobrium that has been directed at Israel from left-wing editorial pages and the genocidal chants from mobs supporting Hamas that have been heard on the streets of American cities and on college campuses. Indeed, so successful has been the effort to demonize the Israeli war effort that Biden said his own wife Jill had demanded that he do something to “stop it, stop it now.”
Political motives
His willingness to heed these calls to halt the Israeli effort to defeat Hamas goes beyond a desire for domestic peace in the White House. The entire left wing of the Democratic Party, including many so-called “progressives” in Congress, has been clamoring that he use the threat of aid cutoffs to end the war prior to the release of the more than 100 hostages still being held by Hamas, including five Americans. Isolated in the White House, Biden and his advisers truly believe that the reason he’s currently trailing former President Donald Trump in his battle for re-election is because he’s considered insufficiently hostile to Israel by the intersectional activist wing of his party that is ever more hostile to Zionism and the Jewish state.
When measured against the yawns and shrugged shoulders from the White House under Obama and Biden when civilians died as a result of their orders, it’s easy to see that the outrage about the aid workers has little to do with humanitarian concerns. Instead, it is about hatred for Israel that has taken root in left-wingers who have come to believe that Israel must not be allowed to defeat Hamas and that any civilian casualties that occur as a result of the terrorists’ actions are too many.
If Biden really wants to end the fighting in Gaza, then he should be directing all of his anger and threats against Hamas and its backers, not the Israelis. If Hamas surrendered and released the hostages—ranging from a baby to an 86-year-old man—the war would be over immediately. Instead, by threatening to trash the alliance with Israel and the mandate that it must live with Hamas terrorism, including the threat of more Oct. 7 massacres in the future, he has only strengthened the resolve of the Islamist murderers to stand their ground, secure in the belief that the United States will save them from the justice they so richly deserve for their crimes.
As much as we may all mourn what happened to the aid workers, the willingness of Israel’s foes and false friends like Biden to use this incident to end the war against Hamas should not be considered a manifestation of humanitarian sentiment. If their tragic fate provides the leverage that Washington uses to end the war, then the blood of the Israelis—and those in other nations who will fall victim to a revitalized international terror movement funded by Iran—will be on the heads of those who cynically exploited their deaths.

The World is Watching and Must Take Action to Stop the Murders of Working People! Solidarity to the Philippines!
The World is Watching and Must Take Action to Stop the Murders of Working People! Solidarity to the Philippines!
The labor rights situation in the Philippines has become so appalling that even traditional bodies like the International Labour Organization (ILO) are forced to respond. During the 105th Session of the International Labour Conference in June 2016, the Committee on the Application of Standards (CAS) adopted conclusions regarding the application by the Philippines of the ILO Freedom of Association Convention (ILO C087) and “noted with concern the numerous allegations of anti-union violence and the lack of progress in the investigation of many such cases…” and among the recommendations was to “accept a direct contacts mission in 2016 in order to follow up on the foregoing conclusions.” A mission was concluded in February 2017.
But the rights violations continued and did not taper, and during 108th International Labour Conference in June 2019, the CAS noted with concern the numerous allegations of murders of trade unionists and anti-union violence, as well as allegations regarding the lack of investigation in relation to these allegations, and again pushed for a mission to the Philippines for 2020. The High Level Tripartite Mission never transpired during the presidency Rodrigo Duterte, and only after he left the office was the HLTM allowed to proceed. The ILO HLTM is expected to be conducted on January 23-27, 2023.
During the years of continued attacks against workers, different trade unions and workers associations in the Philippines mustered courage, forged tighter ranks, heightened resistance, and systematically gathered information, data and cases on multiple violations and threats to the full enjoyment of the Freedom of Association, including murder of trade union leaders, harassment of workers and red-tagging conducted by State forces. The reports have been the basis for the ILO to include Philippines among the top 20 concern list, while the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) also noted the Philippines as among the top 10 “worst countries for workers” for consecutive years.
With Ferdinand Marcos Jr., son of the former dictator, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., now in power, the enablers and perpetrators of the human rights violations in the Philippines remained in power. The cabal of President Duterte are again in major positions of power, such as Eduardo Año who was recently appointed by President Marcos Jr. as the National Security Adviser.
The reign of terror and impunity of State forces are continuing. The complaint against 17 police personnel who were implicated in the murder of Emmanuel Asuncion on March 7, 2021, alongside eight other activists in the Region IV of the Philippines in what is now known as “Bloody Sunday” has been dismissed. The workers movement have documented 56 cases of murder of trade union leaders and workers, many of whom remains unsolved, without the perpetrators brought to face justice.
The notorious National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) persists on its framework that any campaign and advocacy mounted by working people and civil society for their rights and welfare are terrorists in nature, especially opposition against the destructive Neoliberal policies that have pauperized the working people. With such a framework, even collective bargaining between unions and employers are now treated by the State as part of terrorist plots, with State forces directly meddling and intervening. This has become a boon for employers, and transnational corporations (TNCs) operating their supply chains in the Philippines, who would rather have no collective bargaining at all and keep wages and benefits of their workers to a bare minimum to maximize their profit-taking.
Many countries in Asia-Pacific are reforming their labour laws, including India, Indonesia and Pakistan. Workers in these countries have criticized the changes as pro-business and anti-workers, and increases the precarity of the working people, through greater liberties given to employers to hire-and-fire workers. Those amendments have been met by robust opposition from the workers. To quell any resistance, the State, the elite in cahoots with the TNCs in these countries may very well employ the same practice of the Philippine government. The government of these countries are also known to have strong anti-terror laws and can use the practice of NTF-ELCAC in the Philippines to bring labor rights under the ambit of fighting terror.
Brother and sisters, all working people in the in Asia-Pacific must come together to protect our rights. While we advance our struggles within our national boundaries, we unite with fellow workers everywhere as we recognise the common struggle of workers against capitalist exploitation. Working class solidarity is necessary to fight the onslaught of imperialist neoliberal policies that have exploited the working people for superprofits, plundered the resources of the world, and heaped the most brutal repression against worker’s and people’s. We must take stock of what is happening in the Philippines, and through unity and solidarity, advance the struggle for a better world for all working people!

Several countries, including Pakistan, Egypt, Bangladesh, India, Turkey, the Philippines and China, have been identified as centres of organ trafficking, but the trade in organs is a transnational operation. In its 2018 Global Report for Trafficking in Persons, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime identified more than 700 cases of organ trafficking, the majority in the Middle East and north Africa. A 2021 Interpol report claimed that organ trafficking was of particular concern in north and west Africa, “where impoverished communities and displaced populations are at greater risk of exploitation”.
According to the Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation (GODT), only 10% of the global demand for transplants is met each year. Increased demand for kidney transplants, in particular, has been exacerbated by a shortage of altruistic donations and limited access to transplant services. This has led to an increased dependence on criminal networks that obtain organs from vulnerable individuals.
There is a black market for organs including kidneys, corneas and liver lobes. Rising demand for kidneys is partly a result of the spread of so-called diseases of affluence – diabetes, hypertension, obesity – and the subsequent rise in kidney failure. According to the charity Kidney Care, in the UK, the waiting list for a kidney transplant has increased dramatically since the pandemic. Consequently, more people are travelling overseas for transplant surgery. In many countries that attract transplant tourists, kidneys are sourced from the bodies of the poor and disenfranchised.
As a legal academic, I have been investigating the global trade in organs since 2014. Over the past 10 years, I have spoken to 43 people from Sudan, South Sudan and Eritrea who sold a kidney out of economic necessity. In most cases, people were targeted by criminal groups because of their precarious status as asylum seekers, refugees or undocumented migrants. Most were not paid what they were promised. Some were paid nothing. Doubly criminalised, as illegal migrants and organ sellers, they were in no position to negotiate a price, or to ensure they got paid the agreed amount. Because of their precarious legal status they were also less likely to report abuse to the authorities.
In the absence of legal pathways to migration, many had sold their kidneys after they had been arrested, detained and in some cases deported back to countries where their lives were under threat. Most had opted to avoid refugee camps, describing them as “prisons” and “death camps” where people go to die. They were disillusioned with the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR). It was better to risk crossing the Sahara, Yonas told me, than to live under permanent surveillance, captive and dependent on a broken asylum system. Many, like Yonas, had expended all their resources trying to reach Europe and claim asylum. Categorised as illegal and pushed to the margins of society, they were exposed to exploitation of different kinds.
The illicit networks that supply organ markets depend on the close cooperation of medical doctors. Criminal intermediaries are involved in the negotiation of fees, and the preparation of official-looking paperwork presented as evidence of informed consent to an altruistic donation. These brokers, who connect sick patients with impoverished and vulnerable “donors”, also form long-term partnerships with medical professionals. Without the involvement of surgeons who perform illegal transplants for profit, the trade in organs would cease to exist.
In March 2023, the UK tried its first organ-trafficking case. A Nigerian politician, his wife and their broker were found guilty of conspiring to bring a man to the UK from Lagos to obtain his kidney for transplant. The judge said in sentencing: “The trafficking of people across international borders to harvest their organs is a form of slavery. It treats human beings, and their body parts, as commodities to be bought and sold. It is a trade that preys on human poverty, misery and desperation.” Unfortunately, as war and climate crisis displaces more people, there is no shortage of desperate people to prey on.

How Can a Laptop Stand Enhance Your Productivity?
In today’s fast-paced digital world, many of us spend long hours working on our laptops. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or a remote worker, the importance of maintaining productivity cannot be overstated. One often-overlooked accessory that can significantly impact your productivity is a laptop stand. With various options available, it’s essential to consider the laptop stand price in Pakistan when making your selection. In this article, we’ll explore how a laptop stand can enhance your productivity, improve your workspace ergonomics, and contribute to your overall well-being.
1. Improved Ergonomics
One of the primary benefits of using a laptop stand is the improvement in ergonomics. A laptop placed on a desk can often be too low, leading to poor posture. When you hunch over your laptop, you put undue strain on your neck, shoulders, and back. This can result in discomfort, fatigue, and even long-term injuries.
Posture Alignment
A laptop stand elevates your device to eye level, promoting a more natural alignment of your spine and neck. This alignment allows you to sit back comfortably in your chair, reducing the risk of developing musculoskeletal issues. By maintaining proper posture, you can work longer and more efficiently without physical discomfort distracting you from your tasks.
Reduced Eye Strain
In addition to neck and back strain, poor laptop positioning can lead to eye strain. When your screen is too low, you may find yourself leaning forward, which can cause your eyes to work harder to focus. A laptop stand helps raise your screen to eye level, reducing glare and allowing for a more comfortable viewing experience. With less strain on your eyes, you can maintain focus for longer periods, ultimately boosting your productivity.
2. Increased Comfort
Comfort is crucial for productivity. If you’re uncomfortable, your focus will inevitably wane. A laptop stand can enhance your comfort in several ways:
Better Airflow
Some laptop stands are designed to promote airflow around your laptop, helping to prevent overheating. Overheating can lead to decreased performance and even hardware issues. By using a stand, you ensure that your laptop remains cool, allowing it to operate efficiently while you work.
Customizable Height and Angle
Many laptop stands are adjustable, allowing you to customize the height and angle of your device. This flexibility means you can find the most comfortable position for your unique needs, further enhancing your working experience. Whether you prefer a steep angle for drawing or a flat position for typing, the right stand can accommodate your preferences.
3. Enhanced Organization
A cluttered workspace can hinder productivity. A laptop stand can help you organize your desk effectively:
Freeing Up Desk Space
By elevating your laptop, a stand creates extra space underneath for storing documents, a keyboard, or other office supplies. This can help declutter your workspace, making it easier to find what you need and maintain focus. Plus, many laptop stands are available at an affordable price, making it easy to enhance your workspace without breaking the bank.
Multi-Device Use
Many laptop stands come with additional features, such as spaces for tablets or smartphones. This multi-device functionality allows you to keep everything within reach, reducing distractions and helping you stay organized.
4. Increased Focus and Engagement
A well-organized and comfortable workspace contributes to better focus and engagement. Here’s how a laptop stand plays a role:
Fewer Distractions
When you’re comfortable and your workspace is tidy, you’re less likely to be distracted by discomfort or clutter. A laptop stand helps create an environment conducive to concentration, allowing you to immerse yourself in your work.
Greater Engagement in Tasks
With improved comfort and reduced distractions, you’re more likely to stay engaged in your tasks. This engagement leads to a higher quality of work and greater overall productivity. You’ll find yourself tackling tasks with more enthusiasm and focus when your workspace is optimized for your needs.
5. Versatile Use Cases
Laptop stands aren’t just beneficial for office work; they also enhance productivity in various other scenarios:
Remote Work and Telecommuting
For remote workers, a laptop stand is essential for creating a dedicated workspace at home. It helps simulate an office environment, making it easier to transition into a productive mindset. Investing in the best laptop stand not only enhances comfort but also boosts efficiency, ensuring you can work effectively from anywhere.
Presentations and Meetings
If you often participate in meetings or presentations, a laptop stand can elevate your device to eye level, ensuring that you engage more effectively with your audience. This positioning allows for better eye contact and reduces the strain of looking down at your laptop.
Creative Work
For artists and designers, a laptop stand can facilitate a more comfortable working position when using a drawing tablet or sketching. Adjusting the angle can help you find the best position for creativity and productivity.
6. Health Benefits
Investing in a laptop stand not only boosts productivity but also contributes to your overall health:
Reduced Risk of Injury
Proper ergonomics can significantly reduce the risk of repetitive strain injuries. By maintaining a comfortable posture while working, you’re less likely to experience discomfort or injury, allowing you to work more effectively over the long term. Choosing a lightweight laptop stand can further enhance this benefit, as it allows for easy adjustments and portability, making it simple to create a healthier workspace wherever you go.
Encouragement of Movement
A laptop stand can encourage you to take breaks and move around. When your laptop is elevated, you may be more inclined to use a separate keyboard and mouse, promoting standing or stretching during your work sessions.
Conclusion:
Incorporating a laptop stand into your workspace can significantly boost your productivity and comfort. mzzone.pk offers a range of high-quality laptop stands designed to enhance ergonomics and organization, helping you work more efficiently. Is Pakistan about to join the BRICS in earnest? Is it stepping off its US-centric trajectory and reassessing its foreign policy priorities in response to Washington’s increasing interest in cozying up to India – or is there a tactic in play to force the Americans to revert attention back to Islamabad?
Experts and scholars believe that Pakistan is walking a tightrope and cannot afford to rock the boat right now, especially when it finds itself in dire need of financial support from its traditional partners. This is a critical moment for the economically depleted South Asian nuclear power. By all accounts, the US appears to have moved on from this relationship – for one, it no longer relies on Pakistan's assistance since pulling out of Afghanistan following a deal with the Taliban in Doha.
[...]
Officially, Islamabad announced it applied for BRICS membership in late 2023. While confirming the move, the Pakistan foreign office described BRICS as an "important group of developing countries" and hoped that by joining the alliance, Pakistan could play an important role in furthering international cooperation and revitalizing “inclusive multilateralism.”
Even though Indian officials did not publicly react to Islamabad's declaration, Pakistan may face tough resistance from some founding BRICS members, including India, which, according to Mushahid Hussain Sayed, chairperson of Pakistan Senate’s foreign affairs committee, may play a "spoiler" over Pakistan's application for membership. Not that this is something new.
[...]
"The US reacted sharply to Imran Khan's visit to Russia in 2022, but a decade ago, the US and its NATO allies preferred to ignore the country's rebalancing efforts with China and Russia—two rising powers in the region—because at that time relations with Pakistan were critical for their supplies in Afghanistan," Tahir Khan, a geopolitical analyst and expert on Afghanistan, tells The Cradle.
Khan says the US began to exert pressure on Pakistan to roll back its policy toward China and Russia shortly after its withdrawal from Afghanistan. Following the April government change in Islamabad, he adds, Pakistan has shown greater caution in terms of its relations with China and Russia:
"The perception of policy change in Pakistan does not hold water in the context of the lukewarm progress of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Islamabad's inability to address China's security concerns, deteriorating Pakistan-Afghan relations, and Pakistan's utter failure to match China's increasing thrust on investment and economic linkages with Afghanistan."
Khan adds that engagement with Russia has remained dormant following unverified reports about Pakistan's weapon linkages with Ukraine. “On the contrary, Pakistan’s archrival India has done its balancing act more effectively than Pakistan."
The US State Department imposed sanctions on a Chinese research institute and several additional companies on 13 September, a move that appears to be a part of a continuous effort to exert pressure on both China and Pakistan. The US claimed that these companies were involved in supplying Pakistan's ballistic missile program.
Pakistan's Foreign Office vehemently denounced the US action as unfair and politicized, responding in a tone never heard before. In a statement on Saturday, September 14, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mumtaz Zehra Baloch claimed that the US had listed several commercial entities last year “merely on suspicion” because the items for which the companies were sanctioned were not listed under any export control regime, and they considered them sensitive under broad, catch-all provisions.
Without naming India and Israel, Baloch wrote, “It is well known that some governments have readily bypassed licensing restrictions for advanced military technologies to their favored states while claiming stringent nonproliferation laws for others." Baloch said US sanctions were "double standards and discriminatory" and "undermine the legitimacy of global nonproliferation regimes, raise military asymmetries, and jeopardize world peace and security."
How much longer will Islamabad tread water with Washington before switching sides to save itself? This is the very same sort of treadmill that countries like China, Russia, and Iran walked – all of them, at some point or other, sought to trust US goodwill before realizing that Washington had none in stock.

Sense of duty apparently drove suspect
Background check shows he stood up for Ukraine, woman
The man arrested on suspicion of possibly trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump spent his recent years in search of a mission — trying to muster a ragtag army to defend Ukraine and writing a book about his failed efforts, according to law enforcement officials and his online data trail.
Ryan Wesley Routh was taken into police custody Sunday while FBI agents scoured his car and examined his life for clues to his actions and possible motives, according to multiple law enforcement officials.
They spoke on the condition of anonymity to confirm the identity of the man who allegedly crouched outside a Florida golf course with a rifle while Trump played about 400 yards away.
Public records show Routh, 58, as living most recently in Kaaawa on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, at a property also linked to a person named Kathleen Shaffer.
No one answered when a Washington Post reporter called a number associated with the address on Sunday.
Supporting Ukraine
A blog on the crowdsourcing fundraising site GoFundMe, posted in 2022 by a Kathleen Shaffer, said she was raising funds to support her fiancé, Ryan, who “put his life at home on hold and traveled to Kyiv in April to support the people of Ukraine.
He plans on staying for at least 90 days and stays at a hostel with a military unit.”
Photos on the page show a slim, blond man resembling other pictures of Routh that have circulated online and in news accounts.
That blog said Routh was coordinating international volunteers and had helped “send 120 drones to the front lines. Wow!”
The page had collected pledges totaling $1,865 out of a goal of $2,500, which Shaffer said in the posting would go toward paying for flags, tactical gear, hostel lodging and other supplies for volunteers. Public records also show that Routh, originally from North Carolina, faced criminal charges for two separate incidents in 2002 for possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
He pleaded guilty to the first charge in April 2002, a court docket filing shows, though no other details were publicly available.
‘Super citizen’
He also was charged in December of that year, when, according to an account from the News & Record newspaper, Routh, armed with a machine gun, barricaded himself in a United Roofing building in Greensboro for three hours.
Authorities say the incident began after he was pulled over for a traffic stop.
Police ultimately arrested him without incident.
In that second case, he pleaded guilty to driving without a license and registration, resisting a public officer and carrying a concealed firearm, while the weapon of mass destruction charge was dropped, public records show.
That was a sharp departure from a younger Routh, profiled in the same newspaper in 1991 for his assistance in helping defend a woman against an alleged rapist. Routh, then 25, was wearing a coat and tie in a large photo accompanying the story.
He was dubbed a “super citizen” and awarded a Law Enforcement Oscar by the Greensboro chapter of the International Union of Police Associations.
The headline on the story: “Crimefighting pays.”
Last year, Routh was interviewed by The New York Times for a story about Americans’ often faltering efforts to provide military aid and support to Ukraine.
Routh told the paper that after spending several months in Ukraine in 2022, he planned to move Afghan soldiers who had fled from the Taliban to Ukraine to fight.
“We can probably purchase some passports through Pakistan, since it’s such a corrupt country,” he said in an interview from Washington.
Disillusioned author
Routh also apparently wrote a 291-page book last year about his disillusionment surrounding Ukraine, according to an Amazon listing that was selling the tome for $2.99.
The book, which purports to be about Ukraine’s “unwinnable war” and the “fatal flaw of democracy,” includes pages of graphic photos, including beheadings, dead children and bloodied corpses. In a section of the book focused on Iran, the author said he “must take part of the blame” for electing Trump.
“You are free to assassinate Trump as well as me for that error in judgment and the dismantling of the deal,” the book said.
Reader takes issue with headline
As the Public Editor for The Dallas Morning News, I act as the bridge between our newsroom and our audience to help build trust through transparency and accountability.
The Dear Public Editor feature spotlights some of the common questions I receive from readers.
When they contact me, I reach out to colleagues in the newsroom — and sometimes offer my own analysis — to provide answers. Emails here are edited for clarity and brevity.
Dear Public Editor:
I am appalled at a headline in today’s [Sept. 17] paper: “Sense of duty apparently drove suspect.”
It sure makes it seem like you thought the assassination attempt suspect was doing the right thing. My least favorite thing about the DMN is the word choice used in headlines and in articles that are inflammatory. Not cool! Angie Constantine
In any given week, The Dallas Morning News publishes some 700 headlines in print and on dallasnews.com, most of which do a fine job of drawing readers into our content.
They generally draw little to no attention.
Last Tuesday, one did attract the ire of many readers, several of whom contacted me.
They were angry about a headline that inaccurately ascribed a seemingly heroic motive to Ryan Wesley Routh, the man suspected of hiding alongside former President Donald Trump’s golf course for nearly 12 hours, awaiting a chance to attempt to assassinate the former president.
The News immediately acknowledged the “egregious error” and promised to review “our practices to ensure such an error does not occur again.”
Late last week, we asked Executive Editor Katrice Hardy and Managing Editor Amy Hollyfield about that review and the resulting changes.
Those changes add up to this: more eyeballs will see — and scrutinize — all headlines, particularly those on politics stories.
What does that look like?
Among other things, each evening all politics stories will now be shared with scores of newsroom staffers (including editors, reporters, photographers and graphic artists).
That, Hollyfield said, will ensure that “high-level editors like myself will get to review them and offer feedback.”
And our multiplatform editors (the team of people who write our headlines) will now start their nightly review meeting earlier, allowing them to spend more time going over presidential campaign stories.
Maybe most important, all editors have been “encouraged to please speak up and voice any concerns even if they are unsure if what they are raising should be discussed,” Hardy said.
“The slightest amount of doubt is worthy of conversation.
Our editors do a great job of reading hundreds of stories a month, and of carefully crafting headlines. The extra layers are meant to fine-tune our process even more.”

Wapda Online Electricity Complaint Portal Inaugurated
In a significant step towards improving customer service and transparency, the Government of Punjab's Ministry of Energy has launched the WAPDA Online Electricity Complaint Portal. This new digital initiative is designed to streamline the process for Pakistani citizens to address grievances related to WAPDA services. The portal aims to address a range of issues, including overbilling, faulty wiring, and malfunctioning electricity meters, by providing a direct and efficient channel for complaints.
Purpose and Benefits of the Portal
The WAPDA Online Electricity Complaint Portal is a response to the persistent problems faced by citizens in dealing with electricity service issues. Previously, resolving such issues often required multiple visits to WAPDA offices and sometimes involved informal payments to expedite resolutions. The new portal seeks to eliminate these inconveniences by offering a centralized platform for lodging complaints, thus promoting greater efficiency and accountability.
The Government of Pakistan has also established a dedicated WAPDA Complaint Cell to handle issues raised through the portal. This cell is staffed with trained professionals who are responsible for addressing complaints and ensuring timely responses. For immediate assistance, citizens can contact the WAPDA Electricity Complaint Number at 092-42-99202211, where trained personnel will manage and process their concerns.
Role of WAPDA, LESCO, and MEPCO
For residents of Punjab, Lahore, and other areas served by LESCO (Lahore Electric Supply Company), the portal provides a convenient method to report issues directly to the Ministry of Energy. Previously, resolving issues like overbilling or meter changes often involved multiple visits to the Ministry's office, which could be both time-consuming and frustrating. With the launch of the online portal, citizens can now submit complaints from the comfort of their homes, significantly reducing the need for physical visits.
Similarly, for those living in the MEPCO (Multan Electric Power Company) service area, the portal integrates with the MEPCO Online Complaint Number system. Citizens can use the complaint numbers 061-9210334 or 061-9210389 to report issues, further simplifying the process and reducing the hassle associated with traditional complaint mechanisms.
How to Use the Portal
Filing a complaint through the WAPDA Online Electricity Complaint Portal is straightforward. To begin, users need to access the portal's website and fill out the online application form. The process is designed to be user-friendly, guiding individuals through each step to ensure that all necessary information is provided.
Access the Portal: Visit the official WAPDA Online Electricity Complaint Portal website.
Fill Out the Application Form: Enter your personal details and a description of the issue you are experiencing. Ensure that all required fields are completed accurately to facilitate prompt processing.
Submit the Complaint: After completing the form, submit it through the portal. You will receive a confirmation of receipt and a tracking number to follow up on your complaint.
Follow Up: If necessary, you can use the tracking number to check the status of your complaint and receive updates on its resolution.
Addressing Common Concerns
The introduction of the online complaint portal addresses several common issues faced by citizens in managing their electricity services. Prior to this development, problems such as overbilling and malfunctioning meters often required direct interaction with WAPDA offices, which could sometimes involve delays and the need for informal payments to expedite service.
The new system aims to eliminate these concerns by providing a transparent and efficient process for managing complaints. By enabling users to report issues online, the portal not only reduces the need for physical visits but also minimizes the opportunities for corrupt practices.
Conclusion
The inauguration of the WAPDA Online Electricity Complaint Portal marks a significant advancement in customer service for Pakistan's electricity sector. By offering a streamlined and accessible way to address grievances, the portal enhances transparency and efficiency. Citizens across Pakistan, including those in major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, can now resolve their electricity-related issues with greater ease and confidence.
As the portal becomes fully operational, it is expected to improve overall satisfaction with electricity services and ensure that complaints are handled promptly and fairly. This initiative represents a crucial step towards modernizing public service delivery and improving the quality of life for Pakistani citizens.

How to Check MEPCO Bill Online: check reference number
The Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO) is one of the largest electricity distribution companies in Pakistan, responsible for supplying power to the Multan region and several other districts in Southern Punjab. For MEPCO customers, staying updated with their electricity bills and ensuring timely payments is crucial to avoid any disruptions in service. Fortunately, MEPCO has streamlined the process of bill management by offering an online bill check service. This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to check your MEPCO bill online, specifically for residents of Multan, and explains the benefits of using this convenient service.
Understanding MEPCO and Its Services
MEPCO is a key player in Pakistan’s power distribution sector, catering to a large customer base spread across 13 districts, including Multan, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rahim Yar Khan, among others. The company’s mission is to provide uninterrupted and reliable electricity to its customers, while also ensuring efficient and transparent billing processes.
In the past, customers had to wait for their physical electricity bills to arrive by mail, which could sometimes lead to delays, misplaced bills, or even missed payments. To address these challenges, MEPCO introduced an online bill-checking service, allowing consumers to access their bills instantly, anytime and anywhere.
Why Use the MEPCO Online Bill Check Service?
Before diving into the step-by-step process of checking your MEPCO bill online, let’s explore some of the key benefits of using this service:
Convenience
One of the most significant advantages of the online bill check service is convenience. Gone are the days when you had to wait for the physical bill to arrive or visit a MEPCO office to inquire about your bill. With the online service, you can easily check your bill from the comfort of your home or office, using a computer or smartphone.
Instant Access
The online bill check service provides instant access to your electricity bill. This means you can view your current bill as soon as it is generated by MEPCO. This feature is particularly useful if you need to make a payment before the due date or if you suspect any discrepancies in your billing.
Environmental Impact
By opting for online bill checking, you contribute to environmental conservation efforts by reducing the need for paper-based bills. This small step can help in decreasing the carbon footprint associated with the production, printing, and delivery of physical bills.
Easy Record-Keeping
With the online bill check service, you can easily keep track of your electricity bills by saving or printing them directly from the website. This helps in maintaining an organized record of your payments and bills for future reference.
Time-Saving
Checking your MEPCO bill online saves you time and effort, as you don’t need to visit a MEPCO office or a payment center. You can quickly access your bill details with just a few clicks, making the entire process more efficient.
How to Check Your MEPCO Bill Online in Multan
Now that you understand the benefits of using the MEPCO online bill check service, let’s go through the step-by-step process to access your bill online.
Visit the Official MEPCO Website
The first step to checking your MEPCO bill online is to visit the official MEPCO website. Open your web browser and enter the following URL: [www.mepco.com.pk](http://www.mepco.com.pk). This will take you to the homepage of MEPCO’s official website.
Navigate to the “Bill Inquiry” Section
Once you are on the MEPCO website, look for the “Bill Inquiry” section. This section is usually prominently displayed on the homepage or can be found under the “Services” or “Customer Services” tab. Click on the “Bill Inquiry” link to proceed.
Enter Your Reference Number
To access your electricity bill online, you need to enter your unique reference number. The reference number is a 14-digit code that is printed on your previous electricity bills. It is usually located near the top of the bill, under the customer details section. Make sure you enter the reference number accurately to avoid any errors in retrieving your bill.
View Your Bill
After entering your reference number, click on the “Submit” or “View Bill” button. The website will process your request and display your current electricity bill on the screen. You will be able to see all the details of your bill, including the billing period, due date, total amount payable, and any previous outstanding amounts.
Save or Print Your Bill
Once your bill is displayed on the screen, you have the option to save it as a PDF file or print it directly from the website. Saving a digital copy of your bill allows you to keep a record of your payments, while printing a hard copy can be useful if you prefer to have a physical bill for your records.
Additional Features and Services
In addition to checking your electricity bill online, the MEPCO website offers several other features and services that can enhance your overall experience as a customer. Here are some additional services you can access online:
1. Duplicate Bill Generation
If you have misplaced your original electricity bill or did not receive it in the mail, you can easily generate a duplicate bill online using the same process described above. The duplicate bill will have the same details as the original, and you can use it to make your payment without any issues.
2. Bill Payment Options
MEPCO provides multiple options for paying your electricity bill online. You can pay your bill through internet banking, mobile banking apps, or by visiting the nearest authorized payment center. Some banks also offer the option to schedule automatic payments for your electricity bills, ensuring that your payments are made on time every month.
3. Complaint Registration
If you encounter any issues with your electricity bill, such as incorrect billing or meter reading discrepancies, you can register a complaint online through the MEPCO website. The complaint registration process is straightforward, and you can track the status of your complaint until it is resolved.
4. New Connection Application
For residents of Multan who need to apply for a new electricity connection, MEPCO offers an online application service. You can fill out the necessary forms, submit the required documents, and track the progress of your application online.
5. Load Shedding Schedule
The MEPCO website also provides information on load shedding schedules, which can be particularly useful for residents who want to plan their activities around power outages. The schedule is regularly updated, so you can stay informed about any changes in the load shedding plan.
Tips for a Smooth Online Bill Checking Experience
To ensure a hassle-free experience when checking your MEPCO bill online, keep the following tips in mind:
1. Keep Your Reference Number Handy
Always have your reference number readily available when you need to check your electricity bill online. You can save the number on your phone or write it down in a secure place for easy access.
2. Use a Stable Internet Connection
A stable and secure internet connection is essential for accessing the MEPCO website and viewing your bill. Ensure that you have a reliable internet connection to avoid any interruptions during the process.
3. Check Your Bill Regularly
Make it a habit to check your MEPCO bill online regularly, especially if you are enrolled in an automatic payment plan. This allows you to stay informed about your energy consumption and any changes in your billing amount.
4. Update Your Contact Information
Ensure that your contact information, including your phone number and email address, is up to date with MEPCO. This will help you receive timely notifications about your bill and any important updates from the company.
5. Report Any Discrepancies Immediately
If you notice any discrepancies in your bill, such as incorrect meter readings or unusual charges, report them to MEPCO as soon as possible. Early reporting can help resolve issues quickly and prevent any further complications.
Conclusion
The MEPCO online bill check service is a valuable tool for residents of Multan, offering a convenient and efficient way to manage their electricity bills. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can easily access your bill, stay informed about your energy consumption, and ensure timely payments. The additional services provided by the MEPCO website, such as duplicate bill generation, online payment options, and complaint registration, further enhance the customer experience, making it easier than ever to stay on top of your electricity needs.
Embracing the online bill check service not only saves time and effort but also contributes to a more sustainable and organized approach to managing household expenses. Whether you are a long-time MEPCO customer or a new resident of Multan, utilizing the online bill check service is a smart choice that can simplify your life and help you stay connected to your energy provider.

大家好! It's been awhile since I've had fish soup with rice. ML knew of a stall that serves a pretty decent version of it, so she, SC and MI brought me there. What I liked immediately: they added egg floss into the bowl and that's delicious! The first thing to do once I sat down with my food - try the broth. Oh YUM. Then, I really tucked in. Fresh slices of fish with rice, vegetables with rice, I finished all the food. It was so satisfying and comforting that I intend to return to try their fish congee and zha jiang mian (pork noodles in bean sauce).
youtube
ML had a craving for crispy grilled chicken, so she, SC, MI and I returned to the local western style food stall. We're allowed 2 sides and I chose salad for both. Look at that mountain of vegetables on my plate! There was too much thousand island dressing, so I scraped off what I could or ate the veggies underneath because they weren't soggy and disgustingly gloopy. It was decent, just not necessarily my favourite. If you've noticed, it isn't just me who doesn't have fastfood cravings. What ML craves is also moderately healthy. It's possible to achieve this when it's a part of our lives.
Onto sushi. I didn't purposely cut sushi out of my life, I just forgot about it. Rediscovering just how delicious it is makes me want to eat it more often. For those who suffer from binge eating, this might help you. Sushi is widely recognised as relatively healthy food but I'm going through a craving for it. How I avoid an eating disorder is this. Instead of stuffing my face in 1 sitting, I make room for it every week. Moderation is key. Do I eat potato chips or unhealthy snacks? Occasionally. If someone offers them to me in the office, once in awhile, I take a few pieces. How do I limit the quantity that I consume? By having a nutritious and filling lunch. This way, I'm full and don't wanna eat to the point of discomfort before dinner.
Pa and I revisited the Hong Kong food court for lunch over the weekend. He had soy braised chicken noodles and I ordered garoupa hui fan (rice in gravy, usually served with seafood or meat and vegetables). I had high expectations because their garoupa wat dan hor fun (broad rice noodles in silky egg gravy) was sublime. It didn't disappoint. Crunchy blanched choy sum (Chinese flowering cabbage), tender fresh fish and that glorious egg gravy were excellent with rice. Pa's noodles looked good too. I might try that next time.

My country - Singapore, if you don't already know - has sent its 4th tranche of aid to Gaza. The food, which includes sardines and rice, will hopefully provide starving Palestinians with better nutrition. Many of us are horrified by what is happening in the war-torn strip and the tremendous suffering. I'll continue to pray for Gaza and for parties supplying weapons to Israel to be punished. 下次见!
