Personal redraw challenge

We are talking about early Conan, so of course they brought their physical cameras and camcorders to Kyoto hahah ~ Inspired by episode 18

The goal, or intention of my personal redraw challenge is to take scenes from late Conan and redraw them as accurately as possible in the style of early Conan in an attempt to recreate the old and nostalgic feeling of cel animation that went lost with the switch to digital animation. (And because I hate the washed out rhino style)

I’m not a professional by any means and my tools are too cheap to imitate glass & celluloid, but I’m having a lot of fun and I would love to see more people redraw late Conan ^ ^

thank you so much! i'm really happy you like it!!💗 as for tips, what i would say would change drastically depending on what kind you're looking for, but some very general ones:

draw what you love and want to see most, regardless of whether anyone else wants to see it. if you don't enjoy what you're drawing it'll never come out as good or genuine as something your whole heart and soul is in. i mean you'd think this would be a no-brainer but sometimes i've had to sit back and ask myself 'if no one was ever going to see this except me, would i actually spend time drawing this?' and i was surprised by the answer

that said, it is also completely valid if your motivation for drawing is to draw for other people! there have been plenty of times where i was too artblocked to draw my own ideas but was still able to draw commissions or gifts and enjoyed it simply because making other people happy with my art makes me happy.

don't get too caught up in having a consistent art style. in my experience this 1000% hinders you

having your sense of anatomy degrade over time without you noticing because you keep drawing the same types of characters is a very real thing! if this is a concern to you be sure to draw a variety

follow a billion artists that you like the art of and you will have endless inspiration injected directly into your brain every time you open social media

my favourite practical tip for those who draw at a desk: keep a small mirror next to you at all times. absolute game changer for quickly referencing hands

if you're drawing digitally, make the canvas huge! in my experience this lets you draw messier/faster and you can't tell at all when you zoom out. if you tend to get stuck spending unnecessary amounts of time micromanaging pixels (me💀) keep it zoomed out while drawing

related to the above point, messy drawings can have far more expressiveness in them than neat and polished drawings. nowadays i never do lineart and go straight from 'barebones stickman pose' to 'varying-levels-of-coherent sketch' and use that as my lineart. sweet freedom from the sketch-looks-better-than-the-lineart phenomenon

if your goal is to improve, then you really do have to scrutinize your art, figure out what you're not satisfied with, and commit the time to focusing on it. 'practice makes perfect' kinda rubs me the wrong way because of how much i've seen it interpreted as 'just draw everyday and you'll magically improve' but genuinely it won't get you very far if you don't actively think hard about what you're trying to improve and take the steps to do it. is this a hot take idk. also hand in hand with this, not every artist is trying to improve and you shouldn't feel bad for this! maybe you just wanna make a little headshot doodle of your fave blorbo and that's your only drawing goal ever. awesome. maybe you know your art has flaws but it's passable enough to convey what you want and you're perfectly satisfied with that. (this is the stage i'm usually at). also awesome!

don't hesitate to draw something because you think it's out of your skill level. the worst that can happen if you draw it is that it comes out terribly but you learned something and can always redraw it better in the future. the worst that WILL happen if you don't draw it is that you'll never draw it. and then it will sit in the back of your brain haunting you for years. it's not like i'm speaking from experience or anything aha

look up 'hand stretches for artists' and do them if you draw a lot unless you wish to summon the wrath of the carpal tunnel demons

of course, these may not necessarily work for you, and most importantly(!) these are coming from the perspective of someone who is primarily a hobbyist. some of this won't be practical for people who need to build an audience, maintain a consistent style for work, etc. these are just things that have personally helped me over many years of drawing :)

Pikachu Ash

I decided to draw this on a whim the day before yesterday. A while ago I drew Ash as a Mew, with the intention of that being Ash in a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon style AU where he and Pikachu are raised as siblings. So, of course, the thing that Ash would turn into upon discovering that he can use Transform is Pikachu! There's some differences from the canon instance of Ash being turned into a Pikachu by magic (yes, that really happened) - he still has the hairstyle, of course, that stays no matter what. But he has the eye design of Pikachu and also has the little zigzags, which are both different from the canon design where he has his normal eyes but no zigzags.

A more noticeable distinction is that the tail shape doesn't match that of either male or female Pikachu. It's a carryover from his default Mew form, he just turns into 'himself as a Pikachu' rather than copying Pikachu, which is also why he keeps the hairstyle and zigzags and such. Speaking of the zigzags, that's what the shape I chose to use, i thought it was kind of fun.

(he's not shiny when he transforms because he's not allowed to know he's shiny)

I left off the hat because I wanted to practice drawing Ash's hair without it, it's got this weird design where it flips depending on which direction you look at it from.

This is a redraw of the official artwork of Hoenn Cap Pikachu, though it is flipped (for the sake of the zigzag shape). Fun fact, I didn't bother drawing the fingers in the pencil sketch, and only added them when I moved to Inkscape - this is why they're all straight lines. Also a bunch of stuff is overdrawn in the pencil sketch and I only properly did the layering once I got it up digitally.

Finally... I have mentioned it a couple of times, but mostly in replies, so I would like to note that I am working on a oneshot based on this AU idea! I have no idea when that's coming, some scenes are done and others haven't even been started, but I am working on it! Should be some fun.

everything, everything, in its right place, in its right place. there are two colors in my head, there are two colors in my head, what, what is that you tried to say? what, what was that you tried to say? tried to say?

prior to the world's end, atticus was a PhD candidate at CIT, and was instrumental in the creation of their nuclear reactor. he got into vault 111 by lottery, as randomly selected subjects were desired for its cutting-edge cryogenic research. when the institute discovered the vault in 2227, they took great interest in him — he was once one of their own. things become convoluted here, wires crossed. as he woke up gasping, something felt amiss. different. the feeling only strengthens as he does, in his wandering. he will stop at nothing for answers.

redraws for eight year old art! many of you may know him, but to those that do not, i present the star of my rewritten fallout 4, and my nearest, dearest creation. i made him in february 2016, and he is now in 2024 also the star of his own sci-fi universe, an original story of mine. he has gotten me through so much. i'm so proud that i am still here to relay this info, and still creating at that.

i still remember listening to KID A while struggling through the originals, new to digital art. makes me emotional looking back. this will always be *his* song. the rest of the album, too, now that i think of it. every song seems to connect somehow, and he would not be the same today without it.. and tons of everything everything, of course. with that i say, thanks for reading, and i would love nothing more than to reveal more of his lore in due time!

I'm actually mostly self taught haha,, I've been drawing for as long as I can remember, and of course with me discovering the wonderful world of the internet, I was able to find a lot of stuff related to art,,, you know the classics, how to draw cute anime chibi girls, how to draw this and that character on DragoArt lol,,, i would copy a lot of the art that I admired and wanted to be able to reach the skill of, and I would redraw the same thing maybe 2 or 3 times until I was able to draw it from memory and then build upon it to make a mostly original drawing :)

i even started drawing digitally when I was like 6 or 7, mostly on ms paint or a website called DrawingNow that I used to frequent (though the majority of the really popular and what were practically artifacts of the website are long gone now :<), until I was able to get my hands on a... Truly ancient 2010 photoshop,, then I just looked into a bunch of other art programs after that,, I started taking art more seriously at around 11 years old or so, mostly digital, and I bought my first tablet then which I still have lols,,, it's still going strong though! The rest is history really, mostly the media that I would consume affected my artistic journey (mostly anime obviously haha) as well as watching a BUNCH of artist youtubers back in the good ole 2015-2018 days,,, that's pretty much it haha :)

Making of Ashes to Ashley

Recently I posted my comic Ashes to Ashley, and got such a tremendously kind and loving response that I felt like sharing a little bit more about where it came from.

The story is about a transgender awakening, where the quiet and somber Ash explodes out of the closet as the loud and colorful Ashley. This was always the plan, however the details changed along the way. Quite quickly I realized that I was writing about myself and my own trans journey. I never played in a band and I don't imagine I'll ever grow bunny ears (sadly), but still Ashley is undoubtedly a reflection of myself. I just allowed life to become a stage and gender performance a rock concert.

Above are the first idea doodles I drew late at night in early April. I quite enjoyed giving Ashley lipstick and prominent eye shadow, since I hadn't ever done a character like that before. The idea was a bit of exaggerated femininity that accidentally becomes raw punk expression. One or two people have pointed out the Um Jammer Lammy similarities, and they are absolutely not coincidental. Initially I imagined Ashley would've been more reluctant about her transformation, which is why she looks a bit more annoyed in some of my sketches, but the story became more bright and funny if it was made immediately clear that this all happens off of her own volition.

Some method and color tests. My girlfriend suggested I instead go a lot more raw with it, which is why I ended up adamantly using an ugly sponge brush built into Photoshop. Sapphic Disaster are some form of punk-shoegaze band, so combining rough pencil linework with crunchy texture coloring felt like a fitting visual representation of them. This also side-stepped the biggest problems I've always had with drawing comics – dealing with inking is a boring waste of time, and working digitally always makes me fixate on perfection. By just using pencil on paper I had to stick with whatever errors couldn't be saved by a regular eraser, in fact I dedicated myself to only using an old worn down Bic mechanical pencil and embraced the idea that the comic would consistently look a bit off and amateurish. Of course I allowed myself the luxury of cleaning up my drawings digitally before coloring, but that can only take you so far. This way of working helped me make fast progress and kept each step engaging, I've never had as much fun drawing a comic as I had with Ashes to Ashley.

Here's a before and after from initial scan to finished panel. I often only tidy up around focal points like faces or hands, and allow the rest to remain as it is, usually parts like the legs or Ashley's ears.

Character references and my initial color picks, they went through small changes as I went along. I liked giving all the band members different sorts of rabbit ears to make them all look distinct from each other.

Here's some ideas for the Sapphic Disaster band logo and the comic's color palette, notice how Ashley is more vibrant than Ash.

While working I filled up numerous papers with doodles trying to workshop panels and layouts. It's too much to show all of them here, so I composed a few collages of my favorites.

It was pivotal for me that Ash would always look painfully cute. The sketch of the table scene with Floyd shows a rare out-of-character confident and laid-back Ash. In the presence of Floyd?! Never!

I was very concerned about the reader recognizing the old Ash when first seeing Ashley. She may be all excited about being a girl, but her nervous cluelessness remains. I ended up going back and redrawing two panels in Ashley's introduction to strengthen this impression.

For those not in the know, shoegaze is a rock subgenre that centers around noisey guitar textures, typically achieved through heavy use of effect pedals at the musicians feet; hence the name. When Ashley plays her guitar she produces a cacophony of strange sounds, the reader will have to imagine what they actually sound like, but I always imagined their opening number "I Wanna Be a Girl" to sound like a couple of amateurs trying to recreate Lush's Blackout.

The page where the band go around looking for Ashley while she's receiving her makeover was shoehorned in at a later stage for pacing purposes. That's why Gabriel is suddenly back to pulling cords after previously claiming they're all set, oops!

One of the core rules to this story is that everyone is always overly supportive of Ashley's transition no matter what. This is what makes the otherwise stern and serious Floyd especially funny, my girlfriend was pivotal in sprucing up his dialogue, adding bits like "have you seen the health care waiting lists?, "I know an endocrinologist who owes me a favor or two" and "give me 35% more danger"

Towards the end I discovered that Ashley and Debbie dancing was apparently the most important panel in the entire comic, judging by how much I tried to perfect it. (For the record, my favorite panel is when Ashley screams into the microphone that she wants to be a girl.) Maybe Ashley and Debbie dancing should've replaced the final full-page panel? Well, we got a lot of cute doodles out of it regardless. Just kiss already!

Initially I imagined Ashley to be standing alone in the "could this be the real me" final panel, but I realized her odd family of friends was equally a part of the real her. She was always right where she needed to be, she just needed to find herself within that place. (I ended up giving Ashley a cigarette because otherwise it looked like she was praying.)

Here are some ideas for the cover illustration, of course in 1:1 format to look like an album cover. Up until last minute I planned for the comic to have You Made Me Realize as its subtitle to distinguish it from eventual follow-ups, which is why the You Made Me Realize EP cover art is paraphrased in the top-middle. I ended up just going with Ashes to Ashley to keep it clean and simple. The title Ashes to Ashley was blurted out immediately by my girlfriend when I first showed her my concepts for the story. It's perfect, she's perfect.

I drew two Ashes and two Ashleys for the cover art and let my fingers smudge all over the latter. While most obviously riffing on the cover for My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, it's equally taking from the Ecstasy of Saint Theresa's Pigment.

And there you have it.

However I never intended this to be the full extent of Ashley's story, just a satisfying and complete end of a chapter. I've already finished writing the next story, Today Forever, and I hope I can get it out to you all soon enough. Your love for Ashley keeps me going.

Ive recently just started doing art, and i apologize in advance if you've gotten this question before frequently, do you have any tips for beginner artists and how did you find your art style? I'm constantly amazed by how you do anatomy and expressions, their so distinct and expressive!

And I actually don't get asked a lot of questions about myself when it comes to art. Many come to this account so I can put my OCs on the phone for questions, so this is lowkey a new question. I might have been asked it before years ago but I am better at drawing now.

HOWEVER, I have to state that I am simply a hobbyist artist and not a freelancer or professional so my tips will be kinda off brand compared to their word. ANYWAYS...

THINGS THAT I FIND HELPFUL FOR ARTING (besides practicing because I mean...we all know the only way to get better is to practice so it'd be kinda redundant say it - we all know to do it)

Practice drawing in pen. Pen can't be erased. So instead of sketching and erasing and sketching and erasing, it is nonstop sketching. It helped me a lot with speeding up my sketching, even in digital, because I got used to making little goofy mistakes. It also helps to fight perfectionism

Use references. I know that's just as redundant as saying to practice but references are genuinely underrated. Whether they be colors or poses - references are your friend. I use them whenever I am having a hard time drawing something.

Redraw things. I occasionally redraw memes or scenes from animated movies with my OCs. It's stranger really helpful, especially if there is a certain expression in the original image because it lets you play around with how to draw it to catch the correct vibes. PLUS redrawing funny stuff helps take the stress off creating art because it reminds you not every drawing has to be amazing.

Don't neglect your body when you draw. STOP DRAWING WHEN YOU ARE HUNGRY, THIRSTY, OR NEED THE BATHROOM! THE DRAWING CAN WAIT - YOU WILL HAVE A MUCH EASIER TIME CREATING ART WHEN YOU ARE NOT SUFFERING FROM THE HUMAN CONDITION.

Stretch your hands. Drawing puts strain on them and your fingers will ache and your hand may get stiff. Practically hand and finger stretches keeps your hands happy. I do them all the time just because I use my hands a lot for art AND my day job.

Numbers are the devil and the algorithm is a warlord. If you post your art online, it's easy to get into the mindset that you aren't good enough because you have low interactions on your work. THIS IS FALSE - NUMBERS DO NOT EQUAL QUALITY. It's better to draw for yourself and the enjoyment of art rather than drawing to attract a fanbase and attention

As for how I figured out my art style, what you all see is the result of me taking bits and pieces from things I like and blending it all together. An art style is really just figuring out what stuff you like from other people's styles and doing your own thing with it.

To break down some of my own style, the way I shade the underside of noses is something I got from Soul Eater since I loved how the anime marked noses with little dots.

The way I draw lips was a journey. I used to only line the top lip like how the manga for D Gray Man would. Then I saw how Steven Universe stylized fuller lips and sort of started playing with that. Over the course of me exploring - I found more online black artists and learned from how they shade and render lips.

Style is very much something that takes a long time to develop. I've been active online since 2011 and it took me until this year to finally figure out a style I really vibe with.

(based off a silly hc I have, I'll explain more under cut as well as talk about this silly drawing)

So if it wasn't already obvious I've decided to hc Maya as Miles sister, why? Because Misty Fey being his mother is such a dramatic plot twist I can't help but added to my collections of hcs :D!

to be clear I don't want this to be canon (as his mom being left blank is way more fun for the whole fandom imo) I just like this hc for my personal enjoyment of AA, personally I treat all my hc's as DLC for canon :P. I also hc Gregory as Mia's dad cuz again, it's a super dramatic plot twist :P

As for this drawing I drew Maya and Franziska saying hello to their big/little brother because I thought this concept was way funnier in my head than it really is (it's cuz his sisters are same age :P). I'd like to imagine Maya really likes being Miles's sister because makes her feel more justified in mooching off him because they're already steel samurai besties, Franziska would be indifferent, since this doesn't effect her friendship with Maya (Franmaya is a super cute ship I just personally don't ship it :3) and Miles doesn't dislike having another living sister (and one dead sister), however in this image he is rather overwhelmed by the situation of dealing with two sisters at once.

Also I designed casual(ish) outfits for them all cuz I love drawing outfits! And there is something super fun about fan art of characters in different clothes to me :3. Maya's outfit is of course my favourite as it's most similar to my fashion style's (though it took a while for me to figure out what her casual style would be until I decided comfort would be her biggest priority in casual fashion) but I also really enjoyed drawing Franziska's outfit, it was the easiest one for me to think of fun fact. Miles's outfit on the other hand is eh for me, sorry I just find men's fashion very boring ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

Overall I love this drawing, it's definitely janky on account of being drawn with my non preferred hand but I already plan on redrawing it in future with my left hand digitally so I look forward to that future project :-D

Yay! It's the guy with a bunch of power and has no idea what to do with it! 🎉🥪🎊

Our powerful friend here is one of the goofiest characters in the OG series as well as stupidly strong! I tried to give him an outfit that looked as epic as his position in the world but a pose and expression that captures his personality. I have a very interesting arc for him, oh, it's one of my favorites for sure! Can't wait to get to that part!

His drawing was one of the best ones I've made in this sketchbook and of course it had to be one of my favorites, I love this color palette! The purple as the main focus and working with complimentary colors, they support each other really well. I love color theory if you couldn't tell, so if anyone has questions regarding that subject on art I would love to ramble about it! 😁 Anyway, I knew what colors I'd use, his Minecraft skin being the main reference, but I did use some freedom of design! I did not want him to look too complicated but also not too simple. Of course with colored pencils my creativity was limited, there are things I want him to have that you won't be able to see until the digital art, but this will suffice for now. I'm not going to give you spoilers on what you're missing out! I want it to be a grand reveal now!

I had a bit of trouble with his shirt. I couldn't figure out how I wanted the opening to look like so I found a good reference by reading a comic on Tapas, I believe it was Wicked No More, I recommend it as it is very sweet. Moving on from my side tracks, I am pretty good with drawing ruffles, that part was easy and helpful as I thought his shirt was a little plain. It decorated his shirt well, and now the sleeves! Those were looking plain too, so I experimented with space patterns and decided constellation like patterns were good. It was worrying to color around as I wanted them to be white but I managed without a mishap. I decorated the side of his pants with stars as well as his black boots having a giant one. The little... What are they? There are little rhombus things that tie the front of his majestic cape, they might be buttons??? This is bothering me! What are they?! I think you can clip them on the other side of the cape to keep it wrapped around his shoulders, but I'm unsure. Whatever, he can just lift it up if he wants to take it off! His head can fit through the opening! He has big fluffy hair but don't worry, it'll just, fwoosh, slip on through too. He has it tied in the back, if you can see it, but when he undoes it his hair will puff out, like an afro almost. Big fluffy hair seemed like a common interpretation the fans had so I kept it. While adding my own interpretation of it being tied down in a ponytail... Do I like giving strong beings long ponytails? Well of course! They look cool in it and Galaxy here does too! Speaking of cool, I loved coloring his hair and cape, probably my favorite parts of this drawing. I smudged spots of gel pen ink to make the blurred colors, I'm so proud of it! It looks awesome! Adding some dark blue and a bit of the pink I smudged the ink here and there, adding some more space like color. Guess what? His hands weren't a problem! Of course I always have to redraw hands to look right but I consider it troublesome when it takes more than ten times, or if I feel frustrated. So these were pretty good and they look great. His pose was made to look like he's being scolded by Sabre. I really like drawing his nervous expression. He may have impressive powers but he doesn't want to get on his friend's bad side! I loved the interactions everyone had with him, he's funny. AUGH! BUT I DID MESS UP HIS EYES!!! 😭I wanted them to be brighter! But the yellow in colored pencils, crayons and other traditional art materials always get tainted so easily! The eyes were okay in the final results, I've colored better, but I messed it up and accidentally made them darker because I wanted to use my gold gel pen, but I forgot to test it on my test color page and now they're darker than intended. Which isn't the worst, but I wanted them to be brighter... It's not that bad of a mistake at least, UNLIKE SOMEBODY! Glares at Nightmare

Back then however, I never really colored my art so I did not have an idea of how to color in his skin until I looked at other fan art. I'd probably just draw him with a dark purple color, which did look nice, but I also liked the fan interpretations. So I blended the two colors brown and purple, not sure if you can tell, but I think I did alright. I enjoyed drawing this character a lot, he was fun to design! I will say, when it comes to beings as powerful as Galaxy, I think they'd be taller. Some are taller but still short enough to be about face to face, using Sabre as an example, while others might look over him. Like a certain somebody I won't mention yet, I haven't even finished his scribbly sketch.

But someone I did finish and can't wait to show you tomorrow is on the way! You'll love this next character and his angelic design! 🪽

I just realized I haven’t been posting my Cringetober drawings haha… whoops.

Anyways here’s my stuff so far! And of course the list for anyone interested (I’m using the 2024 list by @icryink )

Day 2: Tsundere

I drew March from Fields of Mistria! I’m not a huge fan of him but I like his fall outfit

Day 3: Oversized Prop

I was thinking about OFF again and something I think would be neat as a new game plus addition is a secret bat (if you know you know :) )

Day 4: Fursona

Since my sona is already based on an animal I just did something quick

Day 5: Gajinka

Instead of choosing something from a fandom I decided to draw one of my ocs, Bunni, as a human! I really like how their hair mimics the bunny ears, probably my favorite from the first week

Day 6: Unnatural Eye Color

I decided to draw Pomni from The Amazing Digital Circus since at the time I watched episode 3 and it was great. I tried to redraw her sad plushie expression but idk if I did as well as I wanted to

Day 7: Crossover!

Now this one is special to me. I’ve been working on a crossover story with these guys (Mike from FNaF, Cuphead from Cuphead, The Batter from OFF and Omori/Sunny from OMORI) for about a year. Is it self indulgent? Yes absolutely. Will that stop me? Absolutely not. I might post the fic to a03 but it would not be regularly updated

Something I recommend doing if you're about to burn everything!

I took some time to search for some OLD art of mine... there is nothing left that shows the absolute beginning. But I can explain a little how it went: (aka recreate some stuff)

God knows what was wrong with my kindergarten- brain, but I shit you not. I needed a very long time to get rid of the T-pose! 🫠 wth

I remember I've drawn all the Sailor Warriors on the street with chalk multiple times, and I remember there must be a photograph of them. Should I ever find it... Maybe I'll post it 🤣🤣🤣

The Pokemon phenomenon. It was my life when I was younger, and I am shocked I did not draw very much of it. 😶 (but I had the plan of redrawing all 151 Pkmn!!! I did about 10 in the end) lol

Redrawing. Observation skills were non-existent

Draw what you see!!! You'll learn shit if you don`t 'recreate'. What do you think where your brain gets all the information it needs?

Both Zoro pictures are from the same year. Don't know about you but sometimes my skills jump like crazy!! There are 10-15yo pics that look better than all what I can do today. Thats weird!

Gawd I hate it now lol But I loved it the time I made this.

I grew up loving to draw. I did not do it to show it to someone in the first place. Since I had no speacial goal I got better very slowly, but that's fine. I never pushed my skills actively forward- so there's nothing to complain about.

The digital journey began with ms paint (left) I scanned the lines and used a mouse.

Paint net (right) still no graphic tablet but the program had line- and curve thingys I could draw with and of course.... Layer XD

I don't know exactly- but between this pictures might be 2 or 3 years. This is from my non shipping time. These days this is totally shipping content and you are not allowed to think otherwise XD Platonic love (bromance) seems not to be a thing online anymore. And I miss it.

I lived for the aesthetics!!! Still do XD

Realistic stuff helped me. Everytime I tryed to draw irl people in manga/comic style - you had NO chance to recognise them XDD That got better haha

Redrawings. A great way to see how much better you 've become.^^

A little tip:

Write the date onto your artpiece. (onto the backside if you draw on paper) You'll be thankfull in a couple of years^^

Don't give up Peoples!!

And one other thing: If you desperately try to find your style: How you draw right now IS your style. And you (can) have different styles. It changes all the time! It's not an end point of your drawing journey- because there is none. Keep evolving. Find ways to draw you like. Even then, move on^^
