“When the rich rob the poor it is called business” Mark Twain
As if we didn’t know already, the very wealthy expect the rest of us to literally work ourselves into an early grave so they can become richer still. Millionaire Rishi Sunak’s father-in-law, billionaire NR Narayana Murthy is a case in point:
“We need to be disciplined and improve our work productivity. I think unless we do that, what can poor government do? And every government is as good as the culture of the people. And our culture has to change to that of highly determined, extremely disciplined and extremely hard-working people.”
Poor government indeed! Crumbling national infrastructure and collapsing public survives are the fault of lazy working families. If only we would get up off our backsides and put in the 70 hour week Mr Murthy suggests then all would be well.
The arrogance of the super-rich knows no bounds. Working people are already putting in more hours than ever before. People Management had this headline at the beginning of the year:
“More than four million UK workers considering a second job to combat cost of living, survey finds." (09/01/23)
Even during the pandemic, when you would have expected people to be working less hours, that wasn’t necessarily the case. Forbes, the American financial and business magazine had this to say:
“We Worked Longer Hours During The Pandemic—Research Says We Need To Work Smarter, Not Harder… The extra hours worked during the pandemic would be less of a concern if they were just a temporary phenomenon, a blip on the screen. However, overwork is a longstanding problem." (Forbes:18/08/21)
The move to working from home since the pandemic has also led to an increase in hours and workload.
“Employees who work from home are spending longer at their desks and facing a bigger workload than before the Covid pandemic hit." (Guardian: 04.02/21)
And we have this from the BBC:
“Overwork culture is thriving; we think of long hours and constant exhaustion as a marker of success….New studies show that workers around the world are putting in an average of 9.2 hours of unpaid overtime per week – up from 7.3 hours just a year ago.” (BBC:Worklife: 10/04/21)
More recently we had this headline:
“In the current economic climate, Gen Zers are pulling especially long hours – and pushing themselves to the brink of burnout…18-24 (year olds) tend to put in an extra eight hours and 30 minutes of ‘free’ work per week by starting early, staying late or working during breaks and lunchtimes.” (BBC: Worklife: 29/05/23)
So Mr Murthy, people are not sitting on their backsides. They are working harder than ever, often for “free”. What’s more, many have two jobs because you and your rich friends refuse to give them a living wage, because you are more interested in accruing even more billions than you are in seeing working families being paid a living wage.
Rather than lazy workers, it is the greed of the rich and super-rich that has led to the collapse of public services and infrastructure. The system is rigged in their favour, designed for them to escape paying their fair share of taxes. As I quoted in my last blog, “Tax evasion, and, more broadly, tax avoidance, is not inevitable; it is the result of policy choices” and while we have people like Mr Murthy’s son-in-law in charge of government, nothing will ever change.

Narayana Murthy's views on education
On September 9, Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy emphasized that parents need to create a disciplined home environment to help their children focus on their studies. He pointed out that parents cannot watch movies and expect their children to study at the same time.
Murthy and his wife, Sudha, dedicated over three and a half hours daily to reading with their children, Akshata and Rohan Murty, to foster discipline. They spent from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm focused on reading and studying, with television banned during this time. After dinner, they continued studying together from 9 pm to 11 pm to maintain this culture of discipline.
“My wife believed that if I was watching TV, I couldn’t ask our children to study,” Murthy explained. “So she decided to give up her TV time and study with them.”
Although Murthy’s work often kept him away from home, his wife’s choice to forego TV and study with the children set a strong example. This allowed their children to ask questions and get help from their parents, though Murthy acknowledged that this might not always be possible if parents are less knowledgeable than their children.
However, establishing a disciplined learning environment is more crucial. It is the parents’ duty to set that model of leadership through example, stated Murthy. “It won’t work if the parents take their kids to the movies and then tell them, ‘No, no, you study,'” he stated.
Akshata, Murthy’s daughter, is a fashion designer and venture capitalist, married to former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Rohan, his son, is the founder and CTO of the AI company Soroco.Read More-https://voiceofleaders.com/

Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy called it ‘bold’ to claim that India would become a manufacturing powerhouse!
He pointed out that China is already the ‘World’s Factory’ with a GDP six times that of India’s!
Hence, he suggested India avoid terms like ‘hub’ and ‘global leader’ in the context of manufacturing!!😨
🧐𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸:
In the 1990s, governments prioritized the thriving Services sector but overlooked Manufacturing.🖥️
By 2014, FM P. Chidambaram even labeled Manufacturing as the ‘Achilles heel of the Indian economy’!😰
High input costs in India (50+% tax on fuel!), coupled with government interference and poor governance, exacerbated the issue.
Shockingly, India taxes its exports!!😱
Meanwhile, China has been prioritizing Manufacturing for over 60 years!
They established massive industries, enhanced skills training, and ensured transparency, thus maximizing Manufacturing's multiplier effect!📈
Additionally, China promotes Manufacturing by making exports tax-free, offering substantial subsidies, and manipulating forex rates!!💱
🤑𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲: - China is witnessing a significant slowdown in its economy. - Some countries are actively looking for substitutes for manufacturing as India recently began manufacturing iPhones in bulk. - Even Mr. Murthy said a system to reduce the interface between government and industry was needed to help Manufacturing grow in India! ❓𝙲̲𝚊̲𝚗̲ ̲𝙸̲𝚗̲𝚍̲𝚒̲𝚊̲ ̲𝚐̲𝚛̲𝚘̲𝚠̲ ̲𝚎̲𝚗̲𝚘̲𝚞̲𝚐̲𝚑̲ ̲𝚝̲𝚘̲ ̲𝚋̲𝚎̲ ̲𝚊̲ ̲𝙲̲𝚑̲𝚒̲𝚗̲𝚊̲ ̲𝚜̲𝚞̲𝚋̲𝚜̲𝚝̲𝚒̲𝚝̲𝚞̲𝚝̲𝚎̲?? 7 Important Leadership Lessons from Co-founder of Infosys
With his brilliant mind and remarkable commercial acumen, NR Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, has inspired generations of techies and leaders. From the guy hailed as the "Father of Indian IT," here are a few leadership lessons to be learned. Infosys co-founder and retired chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy still has minority ownership in the company. Murthy was named an entrepreneur and worldwide leader of next-generation digital services and consulting by Forbes Magazine on March 25, 2021, with a net worth of $ 3.6 billion. Infosys has expanded from six employees in 1981 to 242,371 today.
Be Fearless!
Courage is the most important characteristic of a successful leader. It takes courage to dream large and make daring decisions. As Murthy points out, the courage of conviction, courage to contradict conventional wisdom, and courage to take the road less traveled are all required.
Be a Quick Thinker
Murthy feels that continuing to create and introduce new concepts and paradigms to the platform is vital. In a recent virtual event with students and faculty from the Great Lakes Institute of Management, he stated that the NEP (National Education Policy) 2021 only facilitates reform and that true transformation can only happen if children are taught curiosity, pluralism, and open-mindedness from a young age.
Be in a Positive State of Mind
Our mental condition determines the majority of our energy. If you are full of excitement, hope, faith, and joy, physical energy will come to you on its own.
Create a Mentoring Program
Any leader's primary goal should be to assure the existence of future generations of leaders. One of the ways that can be utilized to do this is mentoring. A good mentor can not only coach the team but also help each person achieve their full potential.

Any youngster would like to work in a environment which fosters his learning curve.Make it absolutely clear his learning curve one of the biggest motivating factor ,many indian companies have no learning environment but political environment,
Infosys is a good company if Mr Murthy says youngsters should work hard, their is something wrong which he must be observing in his own excellent company. He should elaborate
We should understand India is a conservative country, historically , where people do not share knowledge. In the west people r open that way.
Our schooling system does not teach thinking .
Our engineering semisters and syllabus r too loaded
Youngsters r distracted lot ,they have poor exposure
Indian bosses r authoritarian and not real leaders.
I worked with distracted lot in an engineering college and devised system where they all worked cooperating and sharing information with each other.
THE BIGGEST PRODUCTIVITY MYTH ?
The companies get the best brain and best from society than they obviously move to greener pastures.
If you look into America and recent statement of MUSK,HE SAYS AVERAGE AMERICAN DOES NOT WANT TO WORK hard.If on the other hand if you look into many leaked stories from china even many Chinese r burnt out.
Can we say only certain people can work hard and rest cannot?
No it is interest, inspiration and motivation within a particular environment which propels people to engage themselves. That negates the theory of hardwork.

J'ai pu me réinventer », a-t-elle ajouté.
