THIS. Back when I went to high school in the mid 00s, we had ONE female wrestler at our school. She ended up having to wrestle the boys because there wasn't (and still isnt) a female team. She won 3 out of 5 matches or something (I don't remember how many, I just remember that she won most of her matches).

Nobody kicked up a big stink about it. And there were plenty if guys and gals even congratulating her.

I wanted to join so bad but my parents refused. Their excuse was risk of ringworm, but the more I think about it, it was the lack of health insurance hence why they never let me play any sports like that whatsoever. (Health insurance was a massive luxury to us back then because we were in a financial spot where we couldn't get any at all.)

I think k the reason why co-ed sports aren't a thing is because people don't want boys being beaten by girls at anything. Cuz then it ruins the ideal masculinity myth for a lot of misled dudebros who only take life advice from problematic bald dudes with a platform. (Didn't wanna name names, but you know the big 2 I'm talking about.)
