Lustbug thing. Psst @the-main-characters
Modeus looked around the living room. She had snuck out of their room in the middle of the night. She felt...bad there. She needed something else. Carefully, she moved around the pentagram. She knew what would happen if she got this right.
A glowing portal opened in front of her. Through it...a gaping, swirling, horrific void of nothing and everything. She could just barely see a figure inside, a monstrous bug thing that moved in an odd, shifting fashion. She stared for a long while, watching as it moved around. Modeus finally placed a name to the monster.
"Beelzebub?"
It stared at her, suprised.
"Oh, a demon. What are you doing, opening a portal to the abyss? Are you sending someone else here?"
Its voice was harsh and defensive, but Modeus was not deterred.
"No, I wasn't going to do that at all. I've just heard about you. I just...wanted some company."
Beelzebub laughed harshly.
"You live in a harem! You have all the company you need!"
Modeus shrugged, her wide eyes fixed on the floor.
"I know, it just feels so lonely. I have been reading these romance books, right? They are full of such odd concepts but...no one wants to indulge them unless it ends with, y'know..."
Modeus gestured a bit. Beelzebub sighed, their body shifting from the monstrosity to a more human form.
"So you opened the portal to the realm I was sealed away in for what?"
"You're...attractive."
Beelzebub chuckled.
"Of course! You want a new girlfriend. That's all."
Their eyes met for a second. They both saw something familiar in the depths of them. Modeus choked slightly.
"How can I get you out?"
Beelzebub looked unsure for just a second, then they slapped on a smirk.
"Oh, you just need to step in here. I'm sure you could just...take me out!"
"Worth a shot."
Modeus stepped in, hating the bombardment of sensations from everywhere. She wasn't as affected as a mortal would be in the same situation. Beelzebub grabbed her hand and pulled her close.
"Hi! Uh, sorry."
They let go of her.
"I haven't touched anyone in a while. It feels nice! You're warm."
Modeus waited for Beelzebub to touch her again, but they just seemed nervous.
"You can touch me again, if you want."
Beelzebub dabbed at their forehead with a handkerchief, rubbing their hands then tucking it away. They grabbed her hand. Modeus remembered something she had read in her romance books and twined their fingers together. Two two stepped out through the portal, Beelzebub straining as they tried to push through...but they both got out. They were both now standing in the living room. Modeus recalled her romance books again, touching Beelzebub's cheek.
"Are you ok?"
Beelzebub nodded, their skin oddly pale and cold. Modeus stared for a long second before hugging them. They didn't hesitate to hug back, burying their face in her shoulder. Modeus liked that feeling.
"Thank you for getting me out. I...I need to hide though. They'll send me back and I can't have that. I can't...I can't go back."
Modeus nodded, patting their back as they let go of each other.
"We have a spare room, you can stay there. I promise I won't tell."
The two went to the spare room. It was dusty and empty, but Beelzebub set to work to clean it up and make a suitable bed. Modeus ran off, and came back with some pillows.
"I'm so sorry this is so sparse."
"This is great! Sooo much better then the abyss!"
Modeus smiled at their enthusiasm. She helped them fix up the small room.
"This is more like a closet."
Beelzebub laughed harshly.
"I've spent my fair share of time in closets. You should get back to your room, bug-eyes. You'll be missed."
Modeus looked happily confused at the nickname.
"Oh, it's fine. Also why bug-eyes?"
Beelzebub sits in their nest of cloths and curtains.
"You have big ol' eyes! They are huge and I like them! Since I like bugs...bug-eyes!"
Modeus felt her heart pound.
"You are...sweet."
"You catch more flies with honey. I don't like honey though."
Modeus giggled and sat next to Beelzebub, putting her hand on their leg. They smiled dopily at her.
"I like having you around, bug-eyes."
"And I like having you around...I don't have a nickname for you yet, but I will."
They smile at each other. Their faces get close, and they stare deeply into each other's huge red eyes. They breathe heavily together, Beelzebub's hand over Modeus' on their leg. One long moment...and they both pull away.
"I need to go back to the room now. Goodnight."
"Goodnight, bug-eyes."
Modeus watched as Beelzebub curled up in their little dusty nest, and smiled. She headed back to the room, finding a place to lay down on the bed. It didn't feel right, just like every other night. It did feel better now that she had a friend in the other room, though.
