My take on Monster High! These are mainly based on the Gen 1 designs, which I grew up with, with a few of my own touchups!
Tumblr media
- Cleo has a fake Osiris beard as a nod to Hatshepsut (to let everyone know she’s royalty, obviously!) I replaced her choker with some wrappings resembling a stylish neck scarf, and her eye makeup is modeled after the Eye of Horus. It always annoyed me that Cleo had basically no non-human or supernatural qualities in her design, so if I were to color her in, I’d make her a dark green- another nod to the Osiris myth.
- Lagoona is basically the same, but I gave her a rounder head, wider mouth, and no nose to make her appearance more fishlike. I also gave her a swimming cap instead of a hoodie. She was always my favorite of the monsters as a kid!
- I tried to make Clawdeen appear more wolflike by adding fur on her face, ears, and legs, and giving her paws instead of hands. I loved the moon motif that the new generation uses for her, so I gave her belt a moon phase design.
- Frankie has more scars and a more patchwork appearance here, and the dress is made up of all different fabrics- sort of like Sally in Nightmare Before Christmas. I still wanted to keep a “preppy” aesthetic, so I kept the overall shape of the G1 outfit. I also made more use of the lightning bolt motif in Frankie’s hair and dress collar.
- I wanted to accentuate Ghoulia’s zombie features, so I gave her more sunken cheeks, no nose, and eyes with dark sclerae. However, her 2000s scene look is absolutely iconic and I could not tamper with it.
- Draculaura probably has the most changes here. I moved her hair higher onto her head and gave her bat-shaped hair ties. While I like her new design, I honestly prefer the striped hair in Gen 1 to the split-dyed hairstyle she has today, so I kept it. I made her ears and nose longer and pointier, and gave her more prominent teeth like Clawdeen’s. While I kept her overall pastel goth/lolita fashion aesthetic, I gave her a high collar as a nod to Bela Lugosi’s Dracula costume. Her skirt is more voluminous and has some extra patterns on it.
