You know even during Stefan’s Ripper days, I never bought Damon’s “good and morally superior” act. I mean it often felt like wanted to show how morally superior he was to Ripper Stefan, but reality he was just being self righteous. Basically I am saying I think Damon was always a piece of shit even before he became a Ripper himself.
Damon was always the lesser brother. I know that sounds mean (which I am), but it's the truth. I said before that Stefan was always the better option, no matter which way you turned. You want someone kind and compassion? Someone attentive who actually listens to and respects your choices? Abs for days and perfectly coifed hair? You turn to Stefan. Flip that and look for the villain, someone over-the-top and mischievous? Someone who manages to outsmart and outmaneuver vampires way older than him, as well as play on their past emotional connection? Stefan!
Damon always just felt like a second-best option, and I honestly don't know why so many fans were so obsessed with him.
I think the reason I (and others) feel that was was of how they were introduced in the show. Stefan started out ad the Nice Guy™ while Damon was introduced as the Bad Boy™. I always think of what my grandmother used to say, that "you should always be nice before you're a dick, because if you start out by being a dick, that's all people will ever see you as." Damon was a dick and went out of his way to prove how big of a dick he was. Everything after that, even when he was trying to be "nice" was colored by that first impression. It always felt like, the few times he was trying to be a gentleman toward whoever, that it was him trying to make up for being an asshole so many times, whereas Stefan just exuded this sense of genuineness. He was trying to be the good guy not to make up for his horrible past (though that was in there, too) but because that's just how he was.
He, way more than Damon, just wanted to be a good person.
Damon's niceness was always undercut but how he chose to go about doing it. Sure, he wanted to protect Elena, but it was more of a selfish thing, taking away her choices because what she wanted to do wasn't what he deemed appropriate or what she should do. That was throughout their entire time knowing each other, him constantly making decision for her, deciding what she could or couldn't know so as to make her own decisions.
Damon Salvatore was the textbook abusive boyfriend, even if he never physically assaulted her. And the mental gymnastics that Plec went through to have the narrative forgive him was absurd. He did all those horrible things to Caroline when they first met, including rape, and she forgives him because he was kind of nice to her mom? He treats Bonnie like garbage throughout the run until Elena's out of the picture, even trying to kill her, but a few months stuck in a parallel world where she's his only company and suddenly they're best friends? Damon also treated Matt as garbage for literally the entire run of the show, turning his sister into a vampire because he was bored and thought it would be funny, and one half-assed apology later they're kind of on okay terms, or at least the same side? Tyler... y'know what, I'm still not over how callously Tyler's death was handled by the show and how Damon faced zero repercussions for it.
The thing about Damon that I never got was how he half-assed everything. Being a good guy because he wanted to get the girl, or even being a bad guy, just because he was bored. It was like he never put any actual effort into anything and yet still the narrative praised him for it.

You are so right abt Bonnie/Enzo. JP also seems to like the OTL trope: Bonnie and Caroline will never find love again bc Enzo and Stefan are dead. Elena will stay forever with Damon (seriously ? Honestly, I don't think Damon'll like his human life). Bonnie will never meet Marcel or Vincent. JP never allows Bonnie to be with someone good: Jeremy cheated on her, Enzo didn't give a shit abt her, her first date tried to manipulate her. Jaimie was the most nicer but they didn' t have any chemistry.
Julie Plec only had Bonnie in two canon relationships with regular male characters on the show.  And she went on of her way to put Bonnie with the least most important male character on the show at the time.  First with Jeremy then with Enzo.
The writers didn’t know what to do with Enzo after Season 5.  Enzo became so useless.   Just obsessing over anything or anyone that was related to Damon (Stefan,Lily and then Bonnie).   Julie Plec admitted that no one cared about Enzo and none of the main characters gave a damn about him.
So, Bonnie was the one who Julie Plec had to make out to be Enzo’s “advocate.”  That ship benefited Enzo way more than Bonnie.  Having Bonnie become all depressed and suicidal over Enzo in Season 8 proves how JP can’t write healthy relationships.
She stuck Bonnie with Enzo, because Plec would have us believe that Jeremy and Enzo would be the only men ever to be drawn to Bonnie or attracted to her.
As for Caroline.  As I said I don’t know why KC fans would trust Julie Plec after 8 seasons of screwing most of the fandoms favorite characters/ships over and after 8 seasons of bad writing.
Yet, for Julie Plec to act like her intentions were always to not do KC because of honoring Stefan. As if she didn’t purposefully tease the Klaroline fandom leading up to the last season of TO, as if she didn’t faibait them during the season with teases of KC being endgame.  Saying that KC fans would love this or that episode or be happy with the outcome, knowing full and well it would get KC fans to tune in with hopes of their ship being romantic.
Now since the show is over with she wants to  diss the KC fandom and make things up with the Steroline fandom.
Delena’s endgame was solely because of JP’s fixation on them.  She lives through Caroline and Elena ships. And has a fixation on Ian so most likely got some sort of self insert out of writing for DE.
Like how she still feels the need to go around appeasing to the Delena fandom with this who “They lived happily ever after, had children, grand children then died a old age.”
Julie Plec was afraid to have Damon have too much development, because it would mean him growing out of his toxic, co dependence on Elena and Julie Plec couldn’t have that.  Especially since she was afraid of  Bamon outshining DE.
Even Ian called DE’s endgame BS.
