Furutod vs Sebastyun
Tumblr media
Dear @gisellehexen89,
First of all, I am very happy you seem to be enjoying my blog! And thank you for the interesting ask.
I think the best way to find out what ‘Elisabeth’ is is to read up on it, or watch it yourself; it is impossible to explain everything in a post. After having learned what the musical is about, and you’re interested in how TOHO staged it in 2019, I recommend reading my full art reports:【ACT 1】 and 【ACT 2】. These two reports also show my general thoughts on Sissi (^ω^)
Now instead, I shall dedicate this post to making a comparison between Furutod and Sebastyun.
Furutod vs Sebastyun
Tumblr media
When Furukawa’s role as Der Tod was initially announced, most people believed he would be very similar to Sebastian. It is an easy trap: both characters are non-human, have very little scruples, are fiercely attractive, and the theme of obsession is omnipresent.
But honestly, that’s it. That’s all the similarities these two share.
1. Status
The biggest difference between Furutod and Sebastyun is their status. Furutod is the Lord of the Underworld (黄泉の帝王), and absolute authority over life and death of all that is alive. Sebastian meanwhile, is bound to servitude who cannot even wield full autonomy of his own. Needless to say, their difference in power status decides everything in their respective behaviours.
1.1. Sebastian
Let us look at Sebastyun first. All three Kuromyus from the Furukawa era show very clearly that Sebastian is very limited in many fields, but the difference between the ‘mask of the butler’ vs ‘the raving demon’ is clearest in ‘Tango on the Campania’.
In the scene with Edward, we see the boy pulling rank on ‘a mere butler’. Edward was basically threatening O!Ciel using Sebastian, while hiding behind the face of ‘a loving brother’. There was nothing Sebastian could do as a mere servant, so he very explicitly checks first whether Edward had left, before he could show his true reaction: “whatever.”
In the cinematic record too, Sebastyun clearly disagreed with what his master demanded of him, and he only showed his BIG ATTITUDE after the boy had left.
Tumblr media
Likewise, as explained in this post, because Sebastian is always bound to servitude, his autonomy (or whatever little he has) is something he treasures a lot. His only outlet of freedom is being pedantic and obtuse. Sebastyun takes it a step further by being passive-aggressive on top, a trait Furukawa has made his Sebastian famous for.
Tumblr media
Obviously Sebastyun sees fun in doing so, but this is undeniably the result of a long history of getting his autonomy denied. He is the servant in the shadows who needs to wield power within other people’s boundaries.
1.2. Der Tod
As I mentioned above, Der Tod is the Lord of the Underworld, and as Furukawa himself interprets, represents the authority over both life and death. He never has to ask for a ‘yes’, other people’s consent or opinions are non-consequential to him. He takes lives because he can, and nobody can punish him for it.
Tumblr media
Being an existence who never needs to learn accepting a ‘no’, he does not need to put up a face, because he never needs to make compromises. Der Tod is SO used to getting his way, that teasing the possibility of ‘not getting his way’ is even a game to him.
1.3. Comparison
Sure, Sebastian also teases and pushes his limits sometimes, but unlike Der Tod, Sebastian does have to consider having to reap what he sows. If Sebastian fails and breaks his contract, surely something terrible awaits him. But Der Tod? Nah... his Death Angels will clean up his mess.
Tumblr media
Der Tod can afford to make mistakes in playing with his prey, unlike Sebastian. In The Last Dance↑, we see Furutod make the biggest miscalculation; scaring Elisabeth. Had he not scared her, then Elisabeth might have been quicker in agreeing to die for him.
Unlike Der Tod who has minions to clean up his mess, Sebastyun does need to make careful calculations.
Tumblr media
2. Understanding and Interest
Another major difference between Der Tod and Sebastian is their understanding of and interest in human beings.
2.1. Sebastian
The thing Sebastian keeps saying is how interesting humans are; Sebastyun is the scientist always hungry for more knowledge, and humans fascinate him to no end. In ‘Tango on the Campania’ even with debilitating pain, he was smiling with the excitement at human behaviour.
Tumblr media
He also makes use of whatever knowledge he has acquired throughout his centuries on earth to get what he wants or needs. Like I said above, at some point in history Sebastyun learned that fear would cause a human to shut down, so he was careful in not scaring Beast, lest she might not open up to him.
Had Sebas been a bit of a dumb-dumb and scared Beast the way he did in the manga, or the way Der Tod scared Elisabeth, then he would have failed his mission logically speaking.
2.2 Der Tod
Der Tod in contrast, always gets his way, so he does not need to understand humans to achieve anything. But more importantly, he is superbly uninterested in understanding humans. The only reason he shows interest in humans is for himself; he wants to bend humans to flatter his own ego. “If Elisabeth finally begs to die, then I AM the victor. If Rudolf commits suicide, then I manipulated him.” Der Tod’s satisfaction is the goal of his actions.
As such, when Rudolf ‘HAD THE AUDACITY to bore LORD DEATH’, he bitchslapped him before taking his life. When in the end Furutod did get Elisabeth, but not in a satisfactory way that assured his baby ego that he’s the winner, he was disappointed and lost all vitality.
Tumblr media
To Sebastyun however, the satisfaction is a bonus: it’s nice to have, but it’s more important to get a job done.
3. Mannerism
Another point of difference is their mannerisms. Sebastian is a mere servant, and therefore needs to keep to the shadows. He usually tries (though fails) to adhere to the Victorian code of ‘servants should be like furniture, speak only when spoken to’. (In truth, Sebastian talks way too much for a proper Victorian servant, but he tries! He tries. Give the butler some cookies for trying.)
Tumblr media
Der Tod meanwhile, is the supreme overlord of all and everything, so he does not need to care about anything. Plus, he can turn invisible as he likes. Unlike Sebastyun who needs to suppress his laughter or any other commentaries, Furutod can get away with laughing like a f*cking hyena on crack during an Imperial wedding.
4. Ego
Lastly, another stark difference between Sebastian and Der Tod is their ego and their presentation of themselves.
4.1. Sebastian
In this post I explained how Sebastian is very willing to humble himself, to come in second place, or take whatever disadvantage voluntarily for the sake of achieving something he wants or needs to.
This is because Sebastian is very secure about himself, and the recognition of humans (cattle) means nothing to him. He does not need anybody to know how powerful he is, instead he takes greater pleasure in silently manipulating others, using humans’ own actions against themselves.
Tumblr media
Yes, Sebastian does love to flex, but he does not do any of those things to increase his reputation. We can tell from Sebastian never lingering to check people’s oohs and aahs. It’s like how when we impress a toddler with something easy, we usually won’t indulge in the kid’s praise because we don’t feel an increase of social regard. Instead, the fact that the toddler is impressed with something so easy is more interesting to us.
Sebastian’s flexing seems more like an outlet because O!Ciel forbade him from showing his true potential, and it is frustrating to him. It is just like how we as (young) adults we are capable of understanding deep analyses, but get constantly told to read picture books, on top of also having be content with hearing: “how amazing, you can read a picture book! You are astonishing!!😱”
4.2. Der Tod
If Der Tod was not explicitly ‘death’ personified, I would say that Furutod is ‘huge ego and diva complex’ personified.
Despite being a more elevated being than Sebastian (the scavenger demon) is as Lord of the Underworld, Furutod does like being praised. Der Tod is and will always be above human beings, and that is as boring a fact as water being wet. As I explained in Art report act 1, Furutod suffers from ‘lethal apathy’, and in this sense he needs more than to know ‘that mortals are beneath him, that water is wet’. Furutod wants to know that the mortals fear him, and gets a kink out of mortals being on their knees for him. Der Tod is not just ‘death’, he is the personification of ‘human regard of death’; and the fear of death, is what unifies human kind, after all.
Tumblr media
Another point in stark contrast with Sebastian is that Furutod does have kin near him: the Death Angels. The regard of mortals is nice, but he also likes keeping his minions impressed, because his kin’s reverence also means something to him. It is almost like Furutod wants to justify why he should be superiour to the Death Angels (even though his position is never challenged). He just gets a REALLY big kink out of praise, okay? ( ´艸`)
Furutod’s enormous ego also shows itself in his diva-ness. When he is courting Elisabeth for example, he is basically behaving like a peacock. He takes Elisabeth’s hand and runs it through his silver hair, his ivory silken skin. “Look at me, feel me, human, I am SO drop dead gorgeous.”
Furutod also can’t handle being lower than anyone; whenever he has the chance he will literally place himself on higher footing.
Tumblr media
Contrast this to Sebastyun who is always very willing to put himself lower than others. This ⇊ would be UNTHINKABLE for Furutod.
Tumblr media
5. Conclusion
In conclusion, besides the ‘non-human character in a dark theme’ aspect, Sebastyun and Furutod really don‘t have anything in common.
5.1. Sebastian
The fact that Sebastyun is always bound to servitude whenever he is on Earth, and his lack of autonomy, shape his behaviour. His reputation on Earth has no meaning to him; Sebastyun is confident about what kind of Demon he is, and the opinions of ‘cattle’ are therefore insignificant to him. The only thing one must not challenge is whatever little autonomy he has left, and he will test and find the upper limit to wield it.
5.2. Der Tod
Furutod in contrast, only knows what it is like to be the most superiour being and never getting his authority challenged. He never had to learn to make compromises, nor does he ever have to deal with consequences. As such he is really a foot-stamping-toddler (Foot-stamping Der Toddler? Sorry.) with a toxic superiority complex and too much power.
Furutod’s supremacy is mind-numbingly boring to him, but there is no way to achieve something grander than what is already grandest. He is trapped in his own mind of toxic superiority and boredom, and will live the rest of eternity searching for entertainment. (It is kind of sad if you think about it......wait, I’m feeling bad for Der Tod? Hmm Furukawa, you really did add a whole new page to the history of ‘Elisabeth - das Musical’)
In short: where Furutod is eternally bored and has no prospect of getting sustainable entertainment, Sebastyun will always have something interesting he might run into.

Writing a Therapist: General Guidelines
There are dozens of different approaches therapists can use to treat clients, and each therapist applies them in their own way. But there are certain things that ALL good therapists you write should do.
A warning - this article is Americentric. I am not sure how these things work in other countries. The laws about these things also vary even by states WITHIN the US. I recommend looking up the laws in the area you’re setting your story in.
Some of these guidelines are adapted from earlier posts I’ve made and questions I’ve been asked, and have been collected here for easy reference.
Education / Training
In the US, to be a therapist, you have to have gotten an undergraduate bachelor’s degree. If the degree is in Psychology or Social Work, that really helps, but it’s not required to get into graduate school, which is the next step.
A therapist character has two options from here: get their Master’s degree, or go directly for their doctorate.
A Master’s is where the character gets the training to become a licensed therapist.  Typically these programs are 2-3 years, and are often specialized: family therapy, school psych, etch.
During these Master’s programs (usually your second year), your character would have started working with clients under the supervision of another therapist.
By supervised, I don’t mean “supervisor literally sits in every single therapy session.”  It’s more like your therapist would be reporting to a senior psychologist about their cases, consulting with them and following their advice. The therapist character would have to complete several hundred hours of supervised therapy.
After that, the therapist character could sit for an exam in order to get their license.  This exam is super serious business, and can take months to prepare for.
Different states have different rules; I recommend you look up the state you’re setting your story in for more information.
Now.  The other option is if you’d like your character to get their doctorate, and be a full licensed psychologist. These come with a fancy PhD. or PsyD. after the character’s name, and they get to be called “Doctor”. Typically a PhD is more research-based, and a PsyD more clinical-based. Some doctorate programs have you earn your master’s while you’re getting your doctorate.
These programs take longer (between 4 and 6 years, typically), the character needs to write a dissertation, and they need to spend a full year doing a full-time internship in addition to the supervised therapy.
They also need to get licensed (see above).
ETHICS
Confidentiality
This is a big, important thing to consider when writing any therapist. What happens in therapy sessions is almost always confidential - the therapist is bound by ethical code (and even by law) not to reveal what you say, or even that you’re in therapy.
This confidentiality has some exceptions, however.
If the therapist believes the client character is actively suicidal or homicidal, the therapist character has a duty to ensure the safety of both their clients and their intended target. This is typically done through involuntary hospitalization and/or notification of law enforcement authorities. The ability of therapists to break confidentiality in this manner and the legal protection they have for doing so varies by the state.
If the therapist believes that a child is being abused or neglected, they are obligated to report it. (I’ll be covering why this is a very sticky issue in a future post).
If the therapist believes that an elderly or disabled person is being abused or neglected, they must report it.
If the client character is under the age of 18, the character’s parent or guardian may be informed about the therapy that goes on.
The therapist may be court-ordered to hand over their records. This is rare, but it happens.
Therapists may on occasion need to discuss a client’s case or consult with their supervisors or a specialist. This isn’t like ‘water cooler talk’ or gossiping about clients - this is the therapist saying “I need help figuring out how I can best help my client.”
The client character has given their explicit, signed consent for the therapist to pass on information to another person (such as to an insurance company).
Part of the first session with any client would be discussing the limits of confidentiality.
Suicidal thoughts (or in fancy therapy terms, suicidal ideation) do not necessitate hospitalization in and of themselves. Once a character has brought it up in therapy, the therapist will ask a lot more questions to gauge if the character is at imminent risk of committing suicide. Most importantly, the therapist would want to find out if the character has a plan for killing themselves. If they do, do they have the means to do it?
If the answer to both of those things is yes, it is very likely that your character could be hospitalized involuntarily.
If the therapist character is seriously concerned, but feels like they do not have the grounds to involuntarily hold the client, they would likely suggest that the client voluntarily check themselves in to a hospital to get extra support. The therapist would likely try to come up with a safety contract with him, and make sure their social support system is able to help when they need it most.
Dual Relationships
Dual relationships, also known as “multiple relationships”, basically mean that in addition to a therapist-client relationship, the two characters have an additional kind of relationship that’s not related to the process of therapy.
For example:
A therapist invests money into a client’s startup company
The therapist meets up with and hangs out with the client with no therapeutic purpose
A therapist is romantically involved with someone who is NOT the client, but close to the client (e.g., a client’s brother, mother, etc.)
The therapist is also a professor, and the client is one of their students
These are bad because it erodes the professionalism of the therapist’s relationship with their client. There’s an imbalance of power that can easily turn into exploitation. The therapist character know the client’s secrets, and they don’t know the therapist’s.
The process of therapy isn’t about the two characters being friends. No matter how much the therapist enjoy working with a client, they’re not friends. Hell, if I ever even encounter a client outside of therapy, just the act of acknowledging that I know them could be a breach of confidentiality.
Anyways, there is some disagreement about what kinds of dual relationships are inappropriate.
Dual relationships are much more of an issue when a therapist is in a very rural environment - if they’re the only therapist in a town of only 100 people, they’re inevitably going to be in some kind of dual relationship. The key is not to let therapeutic relationship be dominated by it, and never enter into a dual relationship where they exploit the client.
Here are a few examples of dual relationship things that in my mind are not necessarily unethical, but a therapist should tread fucking carefully in:
The client invites their therapist to be at their college graduation
The therapist and client go to the same church, but don’t interact with each other during it
However, there is one universally agreed-upon dual relationship that is not just completely inappropriate, but will get the therapist’s license revoked and can even get them thrown in jail in some places.
Therapists should never, under any circumstances, sleep with their clients.
This is so bad. Please don’t write it unless you include the consequences of doing so. It is an incredible violation of boundaries and ethics, and gives therapists a bad name.
FAQ
Do therapists have a strict “no touch” policy? Or can they sit next to, hold hands with, or hug a crying patient who needs it?
This depends on the therapist. Some are okay with it, some are not. It also depends on the approach that the therapist uses: a person-centered therapist is likely to be okay with this, but a psychoanalytic therapist would probably never do it.
Also, institutions (like hospital psych wards) have requirements the therapist must adhere to, regardless of their personal feelings on it.
Do therapists ever make home visits?
Yes. This typically happens with clients with agoraphobia, when behavioral interventions are being made, or when the therapist would like to observe the client’s routines. For example, it’s pretty common for a therapist to be there and help intervene when a client with OCD is struggling with their compulsive routines and need help in the moment.
Do therapists ever meet with clients outside the office?
See above. If a client is doing exposure therapy, then a therapy session could also be held as a sort of ‘field trip’ - the session would take place out of the office and somewhere that has the conditions the client wants to learn to deal with. This could also be a way for a therapist to support a client through a difficult event (such as testifying in court) - but again, this would be part of a session, and the therapist would be paid for it.
Do therapists ever meet with clients outside of work?
Unless it’s part of an exposure therapy situation (ie, being there to support someone in a real world situation as a part of therapy), that’s a bit of a no-no. See the section above on dual relationships.
How long is a session?
It depends on the therapist and the setting. Usually, it’s around 45-50 minutes. It may run longer if the client is in crisis, but doing so can mean taking time away or delaying the sessions of other clients the therapist is seeing that day. Therapists usually spend the ten to fifteen minutes after a session to write up notes, do some paperwork, and prepare for the next session.

LinkedIn Etiquette and Best Practices [20 Do’s and Don’ts]
With all social networks, there’s a right way and wrong way to use them for business. Understanding appropriate LinkedIn etiquette and best practices will make you more successful using the platform and less fearful of making a mistake.
With today’s messaging technology and social media platforms, our way of communicating and showing up in the world has changed, become far less formal.
However, what you post on Facebook is likely not right for LinkedIn. When using LinkedIn for business, there are spoken and unspoken rules.
If you don’t follow proper etiquette, you risk damaging your credibility, and your lead generation results will be dismal.
If wasting your time and hurting your credibility isn’t enough reason to pay close attention to these best practices, perhaps having your account restricted or entirely removed by LinkedIn will. This can happen if you don’t adhere to these fundamental principles for using LinkedIn effectively.
Why Following Good LinkedIn Etiquette is so Important
Newman from Yonyx explains why good etiquette in the professional sphere is so important to your success and relationship building:
“Polite behaviour and decorum are a must – the rules are unwritten and apply to social situations and workplace relationships. In the workplace, especially, business etiquette includes working professionally, maintain proper manners and engage with co-workers in a spirit of cooperation and respect.
Business etiquette is easily noticeable – both when it is present and absent. It makes you stand out among a sea of people and increases one’s chances of achieving greater success in your choice of job. It is extremely important to practice business etiquette to succeed – it fosters good relationships not just with employees but also customers and other business vital partners.”
Essentially, understanding and employing good etiquette, on LinkedIn or in any situation, helps you to stand out, build relationships, and increase your success and business results.
So just what does good etiquette on LinkedIn look like?
Below I am going to share with you 20 important LinkedIn etiquette and best practices (things you should and shouldn’t do) to help you be more successful with your LinkedIn lead generation and social selling activities.
LinkedIn Etiquette & Best Practices: 20 Do’s and Don’ts
1. Personalize
The first and most important best practice I can share with you is to personalize every connection request that you send out to people you don’t know at all or know well.
I get it, LinkedIn makes it VERY easy to accidentally send the default connection request, on desktop and especially on the mobile app. You must consciously and actively avoid sending the default invitation as well as take the time to do a little research and write a personalized connection request.
This one best practice will be the difference between someone clicking Accept or Ignore in response to your connection request. If someone clicks Ignore, they will also have the option to select ‘I don’t know this person’.
WARNING: If you receive an excessive number of ‘I don’t know this person’ responses, your account could be restricted and will destroy your ability to connect with prospects and expand your network.
Personalizing your invites is not optional if you want to connect with new prospects and succeed at generating more leads and revenue for your business.
2. Send a Welcome Message
You’ve connected with someone on LinkedIn, now what?
Think about this.
Would you complain about not getting any new leads from attending a networking function if all you did was collect business cards and never follow up with anyone?
How do you expect a LinkedIn connection to turn into anything other than a random connection if you never make contact beyond the initial connection request?
I’ve spoken at so many events where people have said, “I don’t ever get leads from LinkedIn.” Out of all these people, the majority never progressed beyond sending and receiving connection requests. You can’t magically expect business to appear just by being on LinkedIn or any other social network for that matter.
Stop collecting connections, it’s time to build relationships if you want to succeed with LinkedIn.
How do you do that?
You start by sending a short, yet friendly welcome message after your connection request is accepted. In this message, you would want to thank them for connecting and show some interest in them.
For example, you may compliment them on something within their profile, their business or something they have recently shared on LinkedIn. If you can find any commonality with them such as shared experience interests or connections, bring that up. This is the start of your relationship building process on LinkedIn. And whatever you do, do NOT ask them for anything in this message. If you do, the possibility of a relationship will be over.
To get to know your connection, it is crucial to follow this step. It is the difference between merely adding contacts to your network and building real relationships. No matter how many connections you have, they will be of no benefit if you do not take the time and effort to build relationships with your connections.
3. Irrelevant Messages Are Spam
The term spam means different things to different people.
To me, spam is anything that the receiver doesn’t find value in. Make sure that any message you send to a connection is entirely relevant to them, otherwise don’t be surprised when they don’t respond or mark it as spam.
For example, I often get messages from people who ask if I am interested in learning how to use LinkedIn for business and inviting me to their ‘LinkedIn Webinar‘ on the basics. They have not taken the time to read my profile or learn that I have written and created multiple online courses and books about LinkedIn and that I speak and train globally on the topic.
Also, I regularly get messages from people inviting me to attend their lunch-time networking event in a city 5000 miles away.
Some people use automation tools that send mass messages to all of their connections. These can be dangerous on LinkedIn for this exact reason. With the use of these automation tools, they send their entire LinkedIn network a message that is irrelevant to 90%+ of their entire network. Nothing can diminish the possibility of a relationship with a potential prospect faster than receiving inappropriate messages from you.
Do NOT send your connections anything sales related or irrelevant; they will consider that spam. Everything you send to your connections should be positioned for their benefit, not yours if you want to stand a chance at building a relationship with them.
4. Respond to Messages/Reply Promptly
Similar to an email, the promptness of your response is often just as important as the message itself.
If you are sending messages to your new connections, some of them are very likely to reply. Check your LinkedIn inbox regularly and respond to the messages you receive.
This is exactly what people think when they receive a message from you, that you are open for some form of conversation, so responding to them when they replied to you is critical.
5. Who’s Viewed Your Profile
Are you looking at who’s viewed your LinkedIn profile? If you are not, you could be missing out on possible prospects who have already shown an interest in you.
People are searching for people on LinkedIn, and if they’ve come across your profile and not taken the initiative to send you a connection request, this is your chance to reach out to them.
If there is someone that’s viewed your profile whom you would like to be a connection with, reach out with a personalized connection request just the way you would to any other potential prospect. There’s no need to include, “I saw you viewed my profile,” in your message.
You can also get some additional insights in the “Who’s Viewed Your Profile” section including what companies your viewers work at, the job title(s) of those that are viewing your profile most often and how they are finding you.
If you have a free LinkedIn membership, you will see only the last five people that have viewed your account. However, paid memberships enable you to see everyone who has viewed your profile in the previous 90 days.
6. Professional Headshot
People are visual, and the first thing we notice in a LinkedIn profile is the profile picture photo. According to LinkedIn, profiles with headshots are 14 times more likely to be viewed than those without a profile picture.
You must have a photo of you, not a company logo, not a family vacation picture, a professional headshot of you. Don’t miss the opportunity to make a great first impression by ensuring that the image is set with a clean background and focuses on your eyes and smile.
Remember; this is your personal brand, and you only have seconds to make a positive impression.
7. Your Profile Must Pass Their WIIFM Filter
One of the biggest mistakes made on LinkedIn is writing a profile all about you and not speaking to your ideal clients. The truth is nobody cares about you; they don’t care about your business, or what you sell—they only care about what you can do for them.
People are always viewing your profile through their WIIFM filter—what’s in it for me.
Speak directly to your target market. When someone lands on your profile, you want your potential clients to know they’re in the right place and that you are the person who can help them with their specific problems.
8. Name Field
Adding something other than your name in the name field is a violation of LinkedIn’s TOS (Terms of Service) and can get your account restricted.
But beyond this breach of contract, using something other than your name makes you harder to find, looks unprofessional and reduces your credibility.
There are exceptions. These include things such as suffixes, e.g. Ph. D, as well as former names, maiden names, and nicknames (as these can make it easier to find you by those who know you).
LinkedIn’s Terms of Service state that it is unacceptable to add personal information such as email addresses or phone numbers, or to use symbols, numbers or special characters.
9. Bye Bye, Boring Headline and Summary
When someone lands on your LinkedIn profile, you have seconds to impress them and make them want to learn more about you. The very first thing they will see is your headline and the beginning of your Summary section. If you don’t grab their attention, they will click away, and the opportunity is lost.
You have 120 characters in your headline to tell people who you are and what you do. You can further expand on this in the first two lines of your summary section. This is where you can inspire your viewer to click Show more, to open up your complete Summary section and learn more about you.
10. Your Activity
It is extremely easy for anyone viewing your profile to see just how active…or rather inactive you are on LinkedIn.
Your activity and engagement will keep you top of mind with your connections and is a crucial ingredient to relationship building. You cannot build relationships if you aren’t present and engaging in conversations with your prospects.
A great way to stay active and visible is by posting a status update regularly, as well as posting to LinkedIn Publisher if you write articles. It’s also very essential to engage with the posts and articles of your connections in your newsfeed by liking, commenting and sharing when relevant.
11. Privacy Settings
Privacy settings are there for your protection but don’t forget this is a professional platform where you want to grow your network. LinkedIn is the place where you share your professional background and not all of your personal information and family photos, so you can be much more open with who you connect to.
With this in mind, allow your profile to be public, make sure your full name is visible to all of your connections, that people are notified when you are in the news, and that your connections can see your connection list.
If there are some people whom you don’t want to share your information with, then they shouldn’t be a part of your network, and you should remove them as a connection.
12. Never Add Connections to Your Email List
Do not export your connection list and add them to your email database or send them messages through a third-party email marketing service provider. Just because someone has connected with you on LinkedIn does NOT give you permission to add them to your list and send them emails. Not to mention it is illegal in some countries.
Regardless of what country you are in, you are still liable when sending emails to people where these regulations apply, such as Canada with their CAN-SPAM Act and European Union with their GDPR privacy law. There are strict penalties for violations.
Whether this is illegal or not in the country you are located, it is a highly unethical marketing practice that should be avoided entirely.
13. Social Proof
Social proof shows that others have trusted you to engage in your services, have been happy working with you and received the results they were looking for. It is vital that you include social proof in your LinkedIn profile.
Social proof dramatically increases your credibility and ability to establish yourself as an authority. LinkedIn has made social proof easy by incorporating sections for Recommendations and Skills & Endorsements on your profile.
14. Recommendation Requests
Always personalize your requests for recommendations. There are default messages for many LinkedIn functions, including this one, but I never recommend you use them. Always customize messages, including recommendation requests.
15. Nurture Relationships
Nurture your LinkedIn relationships through regular engagement. LinkedIn will notify you with trigger events such as when one of your connections starts a new job or is mentioned in the news. Take a moment to congratulate them with a personalized message.
If you come across an article or resource, or something in the news that would be relevant to someone in your network, reach out to them personally with a note and share it with them.
When someone is commenting on your content, reply back to them. If someone shares your content, comment on it and thank them for sharing it.
Use LinkedIn’s notifications and pay attention to the newsfeed to find trigger events that make it easy to reach out to someone and nurture the relationship.
Use LinkedIn and social selling The Go-Giver Way made popular by the author, Bob Burg. Create value, touch lives, build networks, be real and stay open.
16. Post Valuable Content
Sharing content is essential to stay top of mind with your network. But only if it’s the right content and is considered valuable in the minds of your ideal prospects and clients. When sharing content on LinkedIn, whether it’s your own or it’s curated content, your goal must always be to provide value to your target audience.
17. Introduce People
This is a LinkedIn best practice that can create significant social capital for you: introduce your connections to each other when it makes sense.
Think of yourself as a business matchmaker. Doing this will invoke reciprocity, and often people will return the favor and introduce you to some of their connections, thus expanding your network in a very personal way. This is an excellent opportunity to support your connections and continue to nurture relationships.
The people you have introduced will likely think of you when they come across someone who needs what you offer and often will reciprocate with an introduction.
18. Keep It Positive and Professional
There’s a difference between taking a stand or having an opinion and attacking and criticizing others. There’s often a lot of schoolyard style bullying that happens on social media. Do not participate in this. Avoid criticizing anyone publicly. I often see people in heated debates, which serve no purpose other than to turn many people off.
Remember: LinkedIn is not Facebook or Twitter. This is a professional network.
Keep things professional, or you risk losing your credibility and trust with your connections. This doesn’t mean you can’t ever post anything of a personal nature, but limit it and consider your audience on LinkedIn before doing so.
Keep your comments positive and avoid wasting your time in pointless debates, after all, you have some new business to generate!
19. LinkedIn Open Networker (LION)
While becoming a LION (LinkedIn Open Networker) may seem like an excellent way to grow your network quickly, it is neither efficient nor effective. A LION is a person that will accept a connection request from everyone and anyone who sends them one.
Now you might be thinking, don’t I want to build an extensive network?
Yes, you do, but the quality is much more important than the quantity of your network, and you should be focused on connecting with the right people.
If a LION accepts a connection request from absolutely anyone, you can be sure their network will include spammers and fake accounts. Your network will be far more useful if you focus on connecting with reputable people and targeted prospects.
20. LinkedIn Groups
One of the fastest ways to expand your network is to join the right LinkedIn groups.
What are the right LinkedIn Groups?
They’re the ones your ideal clients belong to. To find people through the advanced search on LinkedIn, your network consists of your 1st, 2nd and 3rd-level connections as well as members of groups you are a part of.
Most people make the mistake of selecting groups that are filled with their industry peers and competitors. It’s entirely fine to join some of these groups, but don’t miss out on joining the groups that are filled with prospects for you to quickly find and connect with.
Wrapping Up: LinkedIn Etiquette and Best Practices
LinkedIn is a social platform for businesses and professionals.
It is a professional space, much the same as a business office where you have potential prospects or clients meet with you. If something is not appropriate to be shared with prospects or clients face-to-face in your office, chances are, it is also inappropriate to be shared on LinkedIn as well.
Just by following these 20 LinkedIn etiquette and best practices, you will notice a profound difference in your ability to connect and build relationships with potential prospects and clients on LinkedIn.
Now tell me, are there any LinkedIn etiquette or best practices you use that I didn’t mention in this article? Let me know in the comments below. And if you want to learn more best practices on using LinkedIn for business, you can register for my free LinkedIn Unlocked Masterclass.

Yes, the Constitution even protects these armed Nazis
Photo source: Pixabay, wynpnt, CC0 Public Domain, https://pixabay.com/en/constitution-4th-of-july-july-4th-1486010/
The American Civil Liberties Union has reversed itself to decide: now it’s gone too far. They will defend the right of speech, the right to associate, the right to protest and march. They will defend the rights of hate groups, hate speech, and the most egregious gatherings you can imagine.
What they will no longer defend is the right to do all these things while armed with guns.
“We’ve had people with odious views, all manner of bigots. But not people who want to carry weapons and are intent on committing violence,” ACLU spokeswoman Stacy Sullivan told the New York Times.
In other words, your right to carry while shouting “Jews will not replace us” is something the ACLU will no longer defend.
No, ACLU, You Are Wrong
I get the intuition here. The scene in Charlottesville was terrifying for residents, especially since the alt-right protestors were not from the city. It was bone-chilling for most anyone who watched the news. The videos that came out afterward had the optics of an invading Nazi army carrying torches and shouting threats. This was not a protest for rights but a demand for power. And it shook a nation that fought a hugely costly war against exactly this kind of thing.
Basically, you wouldn’t want this happening to your charming town of merchants, students, professional, and picnic goers. And this is why the ACLU finally decided to draw the line and declare it would no longer use its influence to back such things.
However, my answer: the ACLU is wrong here.
The right to carry is defended by the Constitution, same as the right to speech. It should also be similarly absolute. Once you pick and choose the way you want rights exercised, you threaten the very idea of rights and make them all contingent on political expediency. Even aside from that, the right to carry is an extension of property rights. To carry is not to threaten. To carry while shouting hateful things about other groups is also not to threaten. To threaten means to pull the weapon with an intent to use it.
In that sense, and on purely technical grounds, the marchers on that fateful evening and day were within their rights. They also knew that, and pushed this as far as it could go. They created the optics of an invasion: Nazi uniforms and flags, torches, weaponry, angry chants. Standing back from this and watching, it is a completely understandable reaction to say: this should not be allowed.
If so, the place to exercise that intuition is on private property. In Atlanta, Georgia, we have large spaces in the center of town that are public access but privately owned with their own set of rules. They don’t allow smoking, gang wear, swearing, or running. An armed group of Nazis showing up to Atlantic Station would be escorted out in minutes – to the cheers of residents and merchants.
Based on the same principle, it is perfectly reasonable that privately owned ISPs and social media network have banned many alt-right and Nazi websites and accounts from using their services. They specifically cited their terms of use but that is not even necessary. The Bill of Rights gives no one the right to a website and Twitter account.
But cities also have public property that is owned and controlled by the city, parks and monuments, and the like, and it is through this loophole that groups like this gain permission to organize, march, carry torches, and so on. And this is precisely their right by virtue of American tradition and the demands of the free society, which must learn to tolerate speech, associations, and the exercise of fundamental rights in ways that make us not only uncomfortable but even disgust us.
Public and Private
One answer to the problem of exercising rights on public property would be: privatize everything and these problems go away. That’s a solid answer from a purely academic perspective. Conceivably, if everything were private, we would not need a Bill of Rights or any of these principles at all. Everything would be managed with terms of use, based on contract only, and there would be no problem to solve.
That’s a fascinating point but it is not the world we live in. There are public (city-owned) spaces now and for the foreseeable future. And there are controversies and issues that must be dealt with right now.
One answer might be: regulate public spaces as if they are private. If a country club wouldn’t allow Nazi marchers, neither should town centers. If a private home wouldn’t allow immigration, neither should a nation. If the symphony hall doesn’t permit free speech, neither should our town. If a church doesn’t allow same-sex marriage, neither should the county courthouse. And so on.
This is an extremely dangerous idea that mis-renders the whole of the liberal tradition. The reason for the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, and so on, is to restrain public authority. If we give that up, we give up freedom itself.
My mother, for example, absolutely bans alcohol consumption in her home. If we were to say “a territory should be managed the same way as a private home,” we could have a rationale for all-around alcohol prohibition.
That’s the reduction to the absurd, but think about it. The whole reason for private spaces is to provide experimentation in rules. The symphony hall has different rules than the local dive bar. The subdivision has different standards than the downtown apartment complex. The country club, the midtown synagogue, the jewelry store, and the local mall are all private but they have different rules. Private ownership allows these rules to be adaptable to market conditions.
If you choose one set of those rules, and impose them on public property, you have already disabled the reason for private property to begin with. You have locked down an adaptable process and frozen it with rules that may or may not maximize social value.
What’s more, the whole point of declaring certain rights to be inviolable is to provide a standard for public life as it affects relationships between the individual and the civic authority. Starting about half a millennium ago, we discovered that the best way to go about managing public spaces was to erect barriers between the state and society. We said: the state can go no further than this. Here is precisely the origin of things like freedom of religion, speech, association, and so on.
Why did we do this? Precisely to preserve freedom of experimentation in the private realm. Having minimum rules for the state allows experimentation for rules in the rest of society. And there is another consideration. People came to realize that permitting states to act like private agents is very dangerous. This is because states are different. They can tax, jail, start wars, and generally use legal violence. Declaring certain rights to belong to all, and restricting state actions to narrow cases, serves to keep power in check.
This is why we have a Bill of Rights. This is why it must be adhered to in an absolute sense. This is why we should never be tempted to think that states should be given the latitude to do us what we otherwise accept without question when done to us by private actors (such as my mother not allowing me to drink wine in her home).
The Lesson
And this is precisely why towns with public spaces must permit things like armed Nazi marches whereas the local bowling alley can kick out Nazis with impunity.
Now let’s take up the question of being armed. To carry a weapon is not to threaten directly anyone. Only pulling it out and threatening someone amounts to a threat. Otherwise we must presume that the weapon is for self defense, which is an absolute human right.
And let us remember this: even in Charlottesville, no one was hurt by a gun. The people who were injured, and the woman who was killed, was because of a car, not a gun. In this case, banning arms at the march would have made no difference at all. In fact, it might have been more violent because the extremely angry counter-protesters might also have killed someone. For that matter, if the counter-protesters had been carrying guns, that murderer with the car might have thought twice about his road rage.
And let’s consider, too, aside from the tragic death, the ultimate effect of that Charlottesville march. The results were to create a nationwide disgust toward the alt-right, the Klan, the Nazis, and so on. Right now, the public culture in America is more anti-Nazi than anytime since the early 1940s. This has been the effect, and it is a good one for freedom. The entire march has created a strong appetite among the middle class for decency, normalcy, peace, and an end to violent political struggles. Overall, the effect has been great for freedom.
We need to learn to trust freedom and human rights to create the best-possible social outcomes. This is why the ACLU’s initial instincts were right. Let the armed marchers associate, speak, and reveal their malevolent worldview to public, so that we can reject it and move on with our lives.

Yes, the Constitution even protects these armed Nazis

How To Locate Some Psychological Associates In The Making
By Roger Perry
It has been very impeccable to truly deliver the right affiliation of suspecting the enunciated parliaments of choosing the equitable manner. Competition is already the massive probe of ascending the successful way in the stability of humans. Apparently, the admission clearly states the viability of allocating the main issue of pondering the lucrative processes. Furthermore, the modification intensifies the measurement in defining the cumulative circulation of affixing the integral matters across the boundaries. Atlanta psychological associates concentrate on affiliating the destabilization of configuring the extensive minority in ascending the declarative compartments. To advocate the clearance, here are supported matters to delve into allocating the contested actions amidst the relativity. Get a degree. The collection instigates the privilege of contacting the pretenses of dissecting the mensuration within the renewable antiquity aside from distributing the antagonistic ambivalence. It secures the percentage of getting the right job to endure the daily routine of contesting the elimination. The recipient guarantees the diversion of comparing the lucrative session to inspire the diagonal proportion of illuminating the stable appearances. Ask about training. Artificial Intelligence era: What we will do when robots can do anything
Work is a constant in most of our lives – but it is changing as never before. Artificial intelligence that could automate most jobs already exists. While opinions differ about the likely impacts and what society’s response should be, one thing is sure: the deep influence of work on the human psyche means all of us will feel the effects.
----------------------------
- Can machines take our jobs without ruining our lives?
Models, cooks, managers, lawyers – artificial intelligence is capable of doing a widening array of our jobs. But maybe that’s not all bad
John Maynard Keynes always assumed that robots would take our jobs. According to the British economist, writing in 1930, it was all down to “our means of economising the use of labour outrunning the pace at which we can find new uses for labour”. And that was no bad thing. Our working week would shrink to 15 hours by 2030, he reckoned, with the rest of our time spent trying to live “wisely, agreeably and well”.
It hasn’t happened like that – indeed, if anything many of us are working more than we used to. Advanced economies that have seen large numbers of manual workers displaced by automation have generally found employment for them elsewhere, for example in service jobs. The question is whether that can continue, now that artificial intelligence is turning its hand to all manner of tasks beyond the mundane and repetitive.
Fear of machines taking jobs dates back at least as far as the Luddites, a group of British weavers who went on a mill-burning rampage in 1811 when power looms made them redundant. Two centuries on, many of us could face the same predicament. In 2013 Carl Frey and Michael Osborne of the Oxford Martin Programme on the Impacts of Future Technology at the University of Oxford looked at 702 types of work and ranked them according to how easy it would be to automate them. They found that just under half of all jobs in the US could feasibly be done by machines within two decades.
The list included jobs such as telemarketers and library technicians. Not far behind were less obviously susceptible jobs, including models, cooks and construction workers, threatened respectively by digital avatars, robochefs and prefabricated buildings made in robot factories. The least vulnerable included mental health workers, teachers of young children, clergy and choreographers. In general, jobs that fared better required strong social interaction, original thinking and creative ability, or very specific fine motor skills of the sort demonstrated by dentists and surgeons.
Others find that list overblown. A recent working paper for the rich world OECD club suggests that AI will not be able to do all the tasks associated with all these jobs – particularly the parts that require human interaction – and only about 9 per cent of jobs are fully automatable. What’s more, past experience shows that jobs tend to evolve around automation.
According to this more Keynesian view, technological progress will continue to improve our lives. The most successful innovations are those that complement rather than usurp us, says Ben Shneiderman, who founded the human-computer interaction lab at the University of Maryland. Witness for instance the prominence of “cobots” at the 2015 annual automation expo in Chicago. Such robots are designed to work alongside people, making their work safer and easier, not replacing them. “Technologies are most effective when their designs amplify human abilities,” says Shneiderman. They could help us solve problems, communicate widely, or create art, music and literature, he believes.
The weight of expert opinion is behind him. In 2014 the Pew Research Center, a US think tank, asked 1896 experts whether they thought that by 2025, technology would have destroyed more jobs than it creates. The optimists outnumbered the pessimists.
That’s not to deny that AI is spreading into some surprising settings – whether it be organising nightly maintenance on Hong Kong’s subway system, or helping out with subtle legal research, as does ROSS, an AI assistant built on IBM’s Watson computer. This suggests that AI could still cause short-term turbulence in the labour market.
One unfolding example is the gig economy. Here AI systems serve up a platter of casual labour to a convenient app for consumers. Examples include the taxi firm Uber and outfits like TaskRabbit, which helps people find casual labourers to complete all sorts of chores. Although the gig economy is still small in absolute terms, a recent study of 1 million people who bank with JP Morgan Chase suggested that the number of people getting some of their income from the gig economy has increased tenfold in two years.
In such set-ups, workers are typically considered self-employed contractors, so the company has no obligation to keep supplying work or provide benefits like holiday pay or pensions. That has already led to strikes.
How can we adapt? The answer might simply be to update our social frameworks to reflect the new reality of work. Many countries are considering new regulatory frameworks for the gig economy. In the US Uber and Lyft, another taxi service, face ongoing lawsuits about the classification of drivers as contractors rather than employees. Drivers may vote with their wheels, too: Transunion Car Service, established in New Jersey in 2015, is an Uber-like taxi business owned by its drivers that promises health and retirement benefits.
Others are thinking more radically about how to reconfigure our whole relationship with work. That speaks to an important point: ultimately we, not AI, are in charge of our own destiny. Given the benefits of work for our health and well-being, maybe we’ll opt not to abolish fulfilling, rewarding work. “There will be inequities and disruptions, but that’s been going on for hundreds of years,” says Shneiderman. “The question is: is the future human-centred? I say it is.”
----------------------------
- What happens if we pay everyone just to live?
Think universal basic income is a pipe dream? Experiments all over the world are already showing its potential to transform society for the better
Each month, Nathalie Kuskoff repeats the process that ensures her family’s security. Her two young children both have chronic illnesses, so their apartment in southern Finland is mostly paid for by the government, which also helps with childcare, medical bills and education. “I get a lot of different social benefits because of my situation – I mean a lot,” she says. They come at a price: relentless form-filling.
Most developed economies have some form of welfare state to redistribute wealth from the economically active to those who are unemployed or can’t work. People differ about who they think should get what, but few dispute the principle of a basic safety net.
But as Kuskoff and many others find, welfare on the basis of need is a cumbersome, bureaucratic affair. And as automation continues its march, many more of us may find ourselves caught in its net. This is the background to a radical idea to rejig the way we distribute welfare that has recently been in the headlines: universal basic income.
At its simplest, the premise is to replace welfare with a contract promising everyone the same money unconditionally, covering basic human needs – food, shelter, clothing – which people can add to by working. Its proponents cite an array of advantages including higher employment, better community cohesion and improved health. Others see it as an excuse to shirk. Now, as the debate rages, several huge social experiments could settle these differences.
Universal basic income has a long history. Thomas Paine, a US founding father, believed that natural resources were a common heritage and that landowners sitting on them should be taxed and the income redistributed. While the idea has never fully materialised, neither has it entirely gone away. In a few corners of the world variants are discreetly part of the furniture. In Alaska, for example, an annual dividend from state oil revenues is paid to citizens each year – a windfall of $2072 per person in 2015.
The idea has been gaining adherents across the political spectrum. In the UK, for example, proponents include the left-wing Green party and a right-wing think tank, the Adam Smith Institute. The main opposition Labour party is also toying with the idea. In Canada, testing the approach forms part of the policy platform of the Liberal party, elected to government in 2015.
Licence to laze
The perceived threat of automation is a timely spur to revisiting universal basic income, but it isn’t the only one. First, conventional welfare systems are not just bureaucratic but also costly. Even though basic income pays out more money, it cuts the costs of red tape. Various schemes have been proposed that look affordable, including one in 2015 from the RSA, a UK think tank. Basic income also promises to eliminate financial disincentives to work that bedevil many welfare systems – under a basic income system, you always earn more if you work.
The most entrenched criticism is that too many would exploit a guaranteed income to sit on their hands, grinding the economy to a halt. There are signs, though, that this is too gloomy a view.
For four years beginning in 1975, the 10,000 citizens of Dauphin in Manitoba, Canada, were guaranteed a basic level of financial security: if their monthly income dropped below a certain level, the government would top it up. Support for this experiment soon dried up, and it was never properly analysed.
Evelyn Forget at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg recently revisited the experiment, comparing public records from Dauphin with those from similar small towns. Forget found the only groups that spent less time in work during the trial were teenage boys and new mothers. The boys were staying in school rather than bowing to pressure to take agricultural jobs, and the mothers were nursing. What’s more, Dauphin had noticeably lower hospitalisation rates and fewer depression-related illnesses.
That was just one small-town trial. But in Alaska, experience suggests that a basic income could help reduce the rising inequality that has been hobbling world economies. Economist Scott Goldsmith at the University of Alaska Anchorage points out that the state is the only one in the US in which the income of the poorest 20 per cent grew faster than that of the top 20 per cent between the 1980s and 2000.
Now experiments are afoot to test such effects more exactingly. One, in Finland, is one of the grandest social experiments ever conceived, says social scientist Jurgen De Wispelaere at the University of Tampere. “There’s nothing like it happening anywhere.” Starting in 2017, as many as 10,000 Finns will get a no-strings-attached monthly income of €600 for two years. That sum is designed to guarantee subsistence, says Ville-Veikko Pulkka of Finland’s social insurance department Kansaneläkelaitos (Kela), covering housing, food and services like water and electricity.
Kela will publish the full trial design in November, but the point is to test whether a basic income gets more people working. “Removing disincentives to joining the labour force is the key task given to us by government,” says Pulkka. The ideal is to give people a platform to enter the labour market on their own terms.
In Finland, that taps into a well-anchored social principle called universalism: that the same services and education should be available to everyone. “At some level, people want to believe in this system,” says Pulkka. Kuskoff would certainly be interested in participating. “Getting the money without all the paperwork sounds like heaven,” she says.
Reducing bureaucracy is the driver of a similar large-scale experiment kicking off in the Netherlands in 2017. It started when the Dutch government passed a law giving municipalities the responsibility for administering welfare. Their staff baulked at taking on the job of continually vetting welfare applicants as the central government had been doing. “People realised this was going to do their heads in and they needed to change it,” says De Wispelaere.
Nineteen municipalities are now changing how they administer welfare payments, says Sjir Hoeijmakers, who is coordinating the experiments. Each will test different supposed benefits of a basic income like those Forget flagged in Dauphin. In Eindhoven, for example, the focus is on whether the changes help build strong neighbourhoods, while other municipalities are concentrating on randomised controlled trials to determine how individuals fare. A certain amount of freeloading is expected, says De Wispelaere: “In any policy you have good and bad. We want to know how many people move to the couch, and then compare the positive effects.”
Private companies are also getting in on the act. Y Combinator, a venture capital firm with stakes in the taxi app Uber, has announced that it will run a basic income experiment, with a pilot phase slated to begin in Oakland, California.
The most important arguments in favour of basic income are about improved health and well-being, says Louise Haagh, a social economist at the University of York, UK. These too are now coming under more scrutiny. For example, a study of 1000 children by Kimberly Noble of Columbia University in New York found a strong positive correlation between family income and brain development. One theory is that families with a secure income can focus extra resources on their children. “But with purely correlational data we can’t say which way the arrow is pointing,” says Noble.
To find out, she is now running an experiment in which 1000 low-income mothers across the US will receive a basic income for three years. One group will receive a nominal $20 a month, the other $333. Noble’s focus is on brain development, not economics, but a pilot study in New York in which money was handed out on trackable, prepaid debit cards suggested freeloading wasn’t a problem: of 1100 transactions, most of the money went on groceries. Just three happened at a liquor store.
So is a basic income a panacea? Some, like Kuskoff, who have special care needs, worry that such a system might push them to a harsher edge of the welfare state in the name of homogenisation and efficiency. And Haagh thinks that a half-hearted implementation might entrench, not dissolve, social inequalities by offering rich and poor the same. Governments could end up subsidising companies that give few or no benefits to their workforces, while the lucky few with more conventional employment receive far more. The problem is that a poorly designed basic income “might not end up changing society that much”, says Haagh.
Other variants do exist. Negative income tax is a means-tested version of universal basic income: poor people receive a guaranteed income from the government, middle earners aren’t taxed, while the rich are.
It sounds fairer, but could have a significant disadvantage, as the work of Silvia Avram at the University of Essex, UK, hints. She recently asked people to perform a tedious task to earn money under different taxation models. The participants were divided into two groups. One group started with a lump sum that was reduced as they earned – much as would happen under a negative income tax – while the others were taxed as they earned. Both groups ended up with the same money for a given amount of work, but the first group was far quicker to quit the task, suggesting that a well-documented human tendency to loss aversion was kicking in: we are wired to place more importance on minimising losses on what we already have than realising gains of the same value.
For Anthony Painter, director of policy and strategy at the RSA, and author of its report on how basic income could work in the UK, it is an indication that negative income tax wouldn’t be as effective at getting people into work as a basic income. Painter and others also think a basic income could benefit society in other ways, freeing up people to look after older relatives and children, or to pursue creative and innovative work that traditionally pays less, like music, arts and invention.
Such supposed whole-society benefits aren’t easy to test objectively, and that might be the most crucial point. If the referendum on basic income that took place in Switzerland on 5 June is any indication, basic income has a long way to go to gain public acceptance. During the debate, triggered when a group of citizens collected more than the necessary 100,000 signatures for a vote on such constitutional change, no political party endorsed the idea: it was widely seen as indulging shirkers. In the end, 77 per cent of voters rejected it.
However, basic-income campaigners were celebrating that evening, saying their objective was to get people talking. The conversation continues. Maybe the mark of ultimate success for the proponents of universal income, says Hoeijmakers, will be if at parties the unfashionable question “what do you do?” morphs into: “why do you do?”.
