Revolutionizing Industrial Monitoring: Computer Vision for Predictive Maintenance and Compliance
The world of industrial activities is quite fast-paced, and in order to stay more efficient and safe at a reduced cost, companies in Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi look forward to this. Whether in manufacturing, construction mining, food & beverage, or automotive & EV, the same trend is followed: AI-enabled solutions are only going to be the future of industrial operation. Among some of the most transformative today are computer vision for predictive maintenance and environmental monitoring compliance- two game changers that help industries operate competitively, safely, and sustainably.
Tumblr media
In this blog, you will understand how these technologies change the horizon of monitoring, maintenance, and compliance in the organisation and why you need to start introducing these technologies within your operation now.
Computer Vision Revolutionizes Predictive Maintenance
Predictive maintenance is far away from the traditional "run-to-failure" or time-based maintenance strategies on its own. Computer vision in predictive maintenance allows companies to monitor equipment in real time and identify potential problems before they become serious instead of waiting for equipment to fail.
For example, in production and construction industries, losses related to machinery downtime are accompanied by threats arising from a potential risk associated with safety at the workplace.
Computer vision is in; cameras and advanced analytics of images have been attached to the machines, and their data streams are monitored 24/7 for signs of probable failure or hazardous operating conditions. This data will then run in real-time to generate alerts which facilitate adjustments or repairs before time.
For example, with the camera system, anomalies in motor vibrations or excessive heat would be detected and raised by an alarm to operators and thus action before a potential breakdown occurs. Companies ahead of any possible failure book repair work on nonpeak hours, keeping downtime down and operations running uninterrupted.
What is Predictive Maintenance all About?
Benefits of computer vision with predictive maintenance include:
Reduced Downtime: Capturing issues before they grow into failures means that machines run for longer periods and with better efficiencies without the surprise shutdown.
Savings: Preventive maintenance is cheaper than a repair. Predictive maintenance, therefore, saves companies money on emergency repairs, spare parts, and man-hours.
Longer Machinery Life: Maintenance on predictive data ensures that the machines are at optimal working conditions and that the life of equipment would be more extended.
Improved Safety: You could avoid overheating machines, malfunctioning equipment, or workers entering a danger zone if you knew beforehand that something bad was going to happen. This will contribute to the improved safety of the workplace.
The implementation of AI-powered predictive maintenance systems will greatly help industries like automotive and EV manufacturing and facility management to improve the productivity of the machinery as well as ensure the safety and well-being of employees.
Environmental Compliance Monitoring: Save the Planet and Your Bottom Line
Increased stringent environmental regulations all over the world, especially in the fast-emerging markets of the Middle East and Southeast Asia, are being tightly watched by the governments of Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar to protect the environment and meet international standards. In that respect, manufacturing food & beverage, construction, and mining businesses have to be very vigilant regarding environmental compliance.
Today, with the introduction of AI-based environmental compliance solutions, companies can undertake the entire monitoring process. For example, cameras, sensors, etc., gather data through them to track real-time statistics such as the amount of air pollution, emissions and waste. If the emitting level crosses a safety point, the system automatically contacts the concerned department, which can easily take corrective measures on immediate notice.
This proactive stance prevents companies from incurring penalties due to non-compliance, and besides that, it helps sustainably decrease quantities of waste, emissions, and resource consumption in the long run.
Benefits of Environmental Compliance Monitoring
Real-time Monitoring: Emissions, water use, and waste management will always alert us of non-compliance.
Saves Cost: Automated monitoring makes way for manual inspection, which saves a lot of time and resources. This prevents expensive fines for non-compliance.
Sustainability: Optimization of resource use and minimisation of waste help reduce the environmental footprint; thus, businesses can achieve sustainability goals along with a corporate image.
Regulatory assurance: Continuous observation will enable your business to know what is happening locally and avoid penalties and reputational loss pain-free.
Environmental compliance monitoring can play a very important role in reducing environmental impact while at the same time meeting both regulatory requirements and customer expectations for industries such as construction, facility management, and manufacturing.
Conclusion
It is no longer an option but rather a stringent need for businesses in Hong Kong, Singapore, Dubai, Qatar, and so on to take on computer vision solutions for predictive maintenance and advance with AI-powered solutions. Leasing these smart systems will lead to downsizing the downtime, optimising resource use, and following regulatory requirements to increase profit margins. See how viAct is changing industries around the world at your fingertips: real-time monitoring and proactive problem-solving bring greater operational efficiency.

I forgot a couple of things
I forgot to mention I recognized Van Morrison did the soundtrack for Belfast. So was glad when it turned out I was right.
I remembered when I noted that the newest episode of Outlander did a tribute to Sinead O'Connor. I loved her voice, and thought maybe she was the one doing the soundtrack this year.
And just a note, I am watching The Devil Wears Prada, and I have heard that Cait has a nonpeaking and unmentioned role in this movie as one of the models. So going to watch for her.
Remebering the way Willie finally realized he was Jamie's son in the book, I was rather surprised to see the length of time Jamie was looking at him when he gave him his hat, I am surprised he didn't recognize him before. However the look on Willie's face let me feel like he recognized him, but didn't know why. I suspect something will be written about it in a future episode.
And to the person who wondered if Bree and Roger had seen the cave where Jamie lived for seven years in this true time period, I somehow have thought possibly the cave was no longer available to be easily seen 200 years later; possibly grown over, with the gold either hidden or lost, or possibly built over, and I have wondered if Diana will be approaching that question in book 10.

Vickery Creek Trail
The good, this is an excellent trail if you want a workout and to see nature. The path is wide, there are ample paths to take, the trail is clearly marked, there is a restroom by the parking lot, the parking is ample, and there is a lot of room to explore. There are five coffee shops and three major grocers within two miles to make supplies and recovery easier.
Once you were on the trail, there was an occasional bench but this is largely not a trail for beginners and if you dislike stairs, this may not be for you. As you can see in the attached picture, once you cross the bridge, there is a significant climb to the path. There are ways around it but that does significantly limit your options for easy access to and from the trail.
I did not see any running water on the trail, nor did I see any trash receptacles.
That aside, the major negative aspect of this park is the traffic to get to it. It's off of a major traffic area and it took me 20 minutes to go the three miles home. This should not be visited during rush hour unless the kids are entertained, no one needs to use the restroom, and you're ok making slow progress.
I was only able to cover a small portion of the park but I can see this being part of a standard rotation, should I be able to do so during nonpeak traffic hours. https://www.crnra.vip/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Vickery-Creek.pdf

In their most positive form, organized religions may be regarded as the result of an effort to communicate peak-experiences to 'nonpeakers.' A grave danger exists, however, when those holding influential positions in religious organizations are no longer directly connected to the spiritual experiences of their traditions’ founders—and instead concretize (or venerate) religious symbols. 'Idolatry,' the worship of the outward symbolic representations of a religion, stands in stark contrast to the cultivation of the transcendental experiences upon which they were established. Scripture not only springs out of a desire to preserve important cultural histories, but a need to point the way toward authentic spirituality. Religious orthodoxy threatens to strip the world of sacredness—when its symbols are revered with no firsthand understanding of the mystical experiences that inform them.

In honor of May the 4th... here's a throwback to Bug's first Christmas, when we all wore Star Wars outfits 😂 We are super excited for Galaxy's Edge to open this year, but don't dare fight the crowds until our trip next year. I still get quite a bit of anxiety in tightly packed crowds, especially with Bug, so our Disney trip this year is specifically set for non-peak days in non-peak season. . . . #maythefourth #starwarsday #starwars #disney #disneyfamily #disneyland #galaxysedge #starwarsland #babysfirstchristmas #christmas #familyphoto #anxiety #crowds #nonpeak #throwback #memories #maytheforcebewithyou #moderatelyadjusted (at Milwaukie, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxC9qW8l7aZ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1k9xaiqgyjp1p

Best Beach Destination of India - South Goa
Goooaaa!!!
A place where every single youth of this country wants to go with their friends, isn’t it? But do you know that it is a family destination also? When we think about Goa, all we imagine is beaches and beers but no Goa is more than beers and beaches. It has a beautiful history. It has a soothing touch of East Indian culture as well as Western Portuguese. Walking on the land of Goa surrounding by Portuguese house or Palm trees all around you is also as romantic as beach walk with your loved one. Goa has so many things to explore like beautiful churches, water sports and perfect romantic eve at the beach, heritage places, road trips, enjoying Konkani food on the streets of Goa, nightlife and much more.
In short, a perfect vacation trip where you can enjoy yourself and explore so many new things with your family and friends without the need of umm... booze!
Goa is a place where you can get relaxed and achieve some seriously easy going and unhurried peace as well as fun and adventure along with beers and casinos (which is what people remember it for). Hence, we can say that Goa is divided in two districts South Goa and North Goa. One has peace and relaxation where other has nightlife. If you are a family person or wants to spend some good time with your special one, then South Goa is the perfect destination for you. Here is the list of some places along with some activities you can do whenever you visit South Goa.
1. Dudhsagar Water Fall:
Tumblr media
Remember this waterfall? Yes, this is the same waterfall seen in the movie Chennai Express. It is Indias tallest waterfall with a height of 1017 ft. It is located on Mandovi River. The waterfall is surrounded by deep forest and rich biodiversity. To reach this wonderful destination in earlier time you should go by foot or train but now there are certain jeeps available for hire which cost around 2700 INR and can carry 6 people at a time. During the monsoon season tracks are the only way to access this destination.
2. Cabo De Rama:
Tumblr media
So, the next place you should visit in South Goa is Cabo De Rama Fort, which is the oldest and biggest fort in South Goa. The fort is located in Cancona town in South Goa. There’s also a small church in this fort. If you want to feel old Goan culture, then this place is for you. The history says that the name of this fort comes from Lord Rama. It says that he and his beloved wife Sita stay there while they were exiled from Ayodhya. This fort is also providing the vintage point to enjoy the breathtaking view of the sunset over the Arabian Sea. In Monsoon season due to heavy rain some times there can be a block to reach there (just a good to know stuff.)
3. Butterfly Beach:
Tumblr media
What if you get an adventurous and romantic place at the same time and that too on a very secret place? Sounds exciting? Butterfly beach is a small yet most beautiful beach in Goa. This beach gets its’ name because you can spot thousands of butterflies over there. The view becomes breathtaking at the time of sunrise and sunset. You can go there with your family with a picnic basket and spend some quality time or you can plan a beautiful romantic date with your loved one. Hence, this beach is the most romantic beach according to me and its also known as the Honeymoon beach. Tadaah! How convenient!  To reach, you need to pass through by dense forest however, it is a good opportunity for young hearts for trekking, rock climbing and sunbathing (Safety first). But, if you want to feel nature then you must take the boat ride from Palolem beach. That’s whole different way to rejoice the natural beauty it is blessed with.
4. Silent Party:
Tumblr media
So, it is the place where you can dance and get relaxed (from stress). Silent party in South Goa is one of the best innovations for tourist where you can dance on the beats till midnight. All you have to do is put the provided headphone and put on the music and get lost in dance. This peppy party is located near the south end of Palolem beach. If you’re someone like me who love partying then this place is for you. The cost of this silent party is around 600 INR per person included headphone. You can enjoy this party between 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. All this and no noise pollution. How cool!
5. Naval Aviation Museum:
Tumblr media
This place is one of my personal favorite in South Goa. This beautiful museum is located on the South side of Dabolim Airport, Bogmalo Road. This museum holds the evolution of Indian Naval Air forces. Basically, this museum is divided into two parts; one is outdoor and another one is an indoor gallery. In outdoor exhibition, you can walk around and see different types of decommissioned aircrafts. Where, as in the indoor gallery you can read and learn about how the Indian Navy and Air force works. In the indoor gallery, every room is design in a certain way that the room itself has a certain story to tell. Some room even has weapons like booms, torpedoes, etc and the attire of the member of Indian Air force and Navy forces. This museum even has some vintage photograph of Indian Navy’s proud history. In this museum, you can carry your own camera but you have to pay a certain amount for that. You can visit this museum between 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day except Monday.
6. Bogmalo Beach:
Tumblr media
Have you ever imagined how beautiful life is underwater? If you want to see the breathtaking view of underwater or you want to feel that underwater world then this place is for you. Bogmalo beach is small yet quite near from Dabolim airport and it is for Scuba diving activities. You can even spend your spare time before your flight over here relaxing and enjoying the heart touching sound of waves.
7.  Rivona Caves:
Tumblr media
The next attraction in South Goa you should visit is Rivona Caves, which is located in the small village of South Goa called Rivona. these beautiful caves are the creation of Buddhist monks around the 6th century and this place is also famous for meditation. If you are a historical geek, then you must visit this place as its one of the best example of Buddhist influence on Goa.
8.  Cavelossim Beach:
Tumblr media
So, this place is for people like me who are adventure seekers as well for those who want to spend some romantic time with their loved ones. Yes, Cavelossim beach has so many activities like water sports as well as astonishing view during sunset where you can just sit with your loved one and feel a pleasant atmosphere. There are a number of water sports activities like JET SKIING, BANANA BOAT RIDE, PARASAILING, WINDSURFING, DOLPHIN SPOT and what not! You can also enjoy sunbath over here. The water is so clean that you can play with waves of the ocean or can take a lovely walk. Moreover, the black color of lava rock with the white and add more beauty to this amazing beach. This is the best beach destination in Goa that makes your vacation extremely wonderful and pleasant. There is also the main road which is lined by market so you can also do shopping over there. In short, this is a perfect destination for the couples, adventure seekers and beach lovers. You simply can’t miss out the beauty of this beach.
Local Food of Goa:
Ok, so now moving on to the next one. I am going to share some local Goan Dishes which you should try to taste the flavor of local food. This local food is also known as Konkani food.
1. Goan Khatkhate:
Tumblr media
This delicious dish is Goan vegetable stew. It has channa dal and toor dal mixed with the different types of vegetables like carrot, drumsticks, potatoes, green beans, etc. it also has the spicy coconut paste and served with a bowl of rice with ghee on top.
2. Sorak:
Tumblr media
The next dish is Sorak which is nothing but a simple vegetarian cury. This is the best food to have in monsoon season. This dish has spicy masalas along with tomatoes and onions. This dish serves with hot steamed rice.
3. Bebinca:
Tumblr media
This is a dish which one should not miss out as it is the best dessert one can have in Goa. It is a multi-layered cake prepared with coconut milk, sugar, eggs, and flour. You can also say that this delicious dessert is a pancake with a touch of Goa. The sugar in this is caramelized sugar which adds rich flavor to this dessert.
When to visit Goa:
Goa is one of the best destinations to visit in every season but if you want to go for any specific season then here are some personal suggestions:
1. March-May:
This is the time where the summer season starts and the temperature hit 40℃ or above that. Hence, it may be uncomfortable for one and it takes time to adjust one’s biological cycle with the outer temperature. No doubt that the sea remains nice and beaches have balmy breeze flowing around, morning and evening are pleasant but the time between afternoon to at least mid-evening can be a bit unbearable. Hence, it is nonpeak season so one can get the lesser price for hotel, resorts and get around in Goa.
2.    June – September:
This is the season where most people are avoiding visiting to Goa, but trust me it is one of the best seasons that one can ever visit. Just imagine that after the harsh heat of summer the smell of wet earth is just irreplaceable. Goa becomes more beautiful during the rainy season. Roads are surrounded by greenery, dry land gets new life with drops of rains falling onto. If you are a person who wants to spend timealone on the beach or want to get relaxed with lesser noise and the lesser crowd, then this is the best time for you to explore the beauty and one can’t simply ignore the beauty of Goa in Monsoon season.
3. November – February:
This is by far the best time for people to visit Goa as well as this is the time for celebrations in the city. During this time the weather of Goa becomes very pleasant. During this time Goa becomes the place for celebration, festivals, paradise and moreover, this is when the Goa Carnival happens. This is the most favorite season for youth to visit as this is the time for partying in Goa, hotel rates get a bit higher and sometimes most hotel gets packed during this season. So, if you are going to visit Goa during this time then make sure you book your resort or hotel in advance (or pay the hike if you can.)
Things to carry:
Moving to the next point, it is where 70-80% of people get confused that what should we carry while traveling to Goa and how to take care of our skin and hair while in Goa as it is a beach trip. Then I have some personal tips and a list of a few things that one should keep while traveling to Goa:
Swimwear or Sarongs
Flip-flops
Shorts or loose-fitting trousers
A cotton dress or long skirt
Funky Jewelry
Tank tops
Sunglasses
Hats or Caps
Moistures, Lip balm, and Sunscreen
Water Bottle
Camera and Power bank
Necessary Medicines, Sanitizer, and Paper napkin
Pretty basic uhh...Ok so now moving on to taking good care of your skin and hair. First of all, keep yourself hydrated. Don’t forget to use a moisturizer before going to swim, making a bun is the best way to protect your hair from getting damaged. After swim takes bath and doesn’t forget to shampoo your hair with conditioner (don’t be lazy.) Apply moisturizer and sunscreen to your skin. Use lip balm to keep your lips soft and hydrated. Use sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun heat (and of course, style matters because why not) and if you are keeping your hair open then try wearing a hat or cap (if possible). Wearing a scarf or long shrug with tank top and shorts makes you look more stunning and will transform into an eye-candy for sure.
Travel around in Goa:
For getting around in Goa you have two options. Either you can hire a taxi or you can self-drive.
1.    Self-drive:
If you are with your friend or you are a couple then I would suggest you to take a self-drive. Because you can explore things in your own way and second riding with your friend on the streets of Goa would give you the best experience of your life. You can hire a bike or even a car for self-drive very easily. All you have to do is submit a copy of your license and pay the rent which is around 600-1000 INR for bikes and 1000-2500 INR for cars. Deposits may vary from place to place.
2.    Taxies:
This is the simplest way of getting around in Goa. You can book a taxi for a whole day which cost you around 2700-3200 INR depends on which taxi you are hiring. This cost for a taxi is between 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. After 6:00 p.m it would cost you around 100-300 INR per hour.
Where to stay:
Ok, so the main difficulty we face is that where to take stay in South Goa. When we are with family we have to check everything including rooms, security, and atmosphere and so on. There is a resort called Royal Orchid located at Uttrada beach in South Goa is one of best resort out there. It is easily accessible from Madgoan Railway Station as well as Dabolim Airport. This resort provides you 3 categories: Club Rooms, Luxury Suits and Royal Suits. It has private plunge pool along with swimming pool, fitness center, spa, a gaming zone, karaoke, in the house water park and kids play area just to name a few (no advertising, just a personal experience so sharing here.)
The price for Club Rooms is around 4700 INR per night which includes, buffet breakfast, WIFI, electronic safe deposit, LED TV, DVD player on request, in-room dining, tea/coffee maker, turn down services. This room opens up to the pool area and green laws. The area of this room is 235 sqft.
The price for Luxury Suits is around 7400 INR per night which includes, buffet breakfast, sofa cum bed in the living room, WIFI, electronic safe deposit, LED TV, DVD player on request, in-room dining, tea/coffee maker, turn down services. This room opens up to the pool area and green laws. This room is most favorite for couples. The area for this room is 359 sqft.
The price for Royal Suits is around 10,000 INR per night which includes, buffet breakfast, private plunge pool, sofa cum bed in the living room, WIFI, electronic safe deposit, LED TV, DVD player on request, in room dining, tea/coffee maker, turn down services. The size of this room is 391 sqft.
Tumblr media
(Picture courtesy: www.booking.com)                     The entrance of the resort is like a small path, the walls are covered with different types of flowers, stones, and plants along with small LEDs. After walking through that beautiful path, you will enter in the main reception area. The interior of the area is simple and classy. It has mini bookshelves all over there along with a mini bakery shop. The second gate of the lobby opens at the pool area so, sitting on a sofa with a cup of coffee and just watching outside is also one of the amazing experience that you can have. The outward appearance of the resort is good too. Pool area along with kids pool look so amazing surrounded by green lawns and some trees. There are panels of swimming pool chairs umbrella over there. All the rooms have a classy interior and are very spacious. There is a balcony with sitting arrangements where you can sit with your special one and having a cup of tea or coffee can watch pleasing sunset or sunrise and make the best of your memories. Coming to the next the dining area is also beautiful, classy and spacious. They have a beautiful panel arrangement for buffet breakfast/lunch/dinner with the name of that dish. Now, what if you and your special one can be on a romantic beach candle light dinner date watching the breathtaking sunset, hand in hand or romantic dance on light music where you are just with your loved one making best of memories for a lifetime. Yes, you can plan a special romantic date with your loved one over here. Fitness area of the resort is also good having different types of equipment like treadmill, cycle, squat rack, lat pulldown machine, etc. Coming next is where you also want to be a kid and play along with them. Yes, am talking about kids area which is pretty huge and has different types of a cartoon drawn over the wall. They have different types of toys like electronic cars and bikes, carom, story books, snack and ladder area etc. Now, there’s an interesting thing you must like is that they have human chess. Take a path from poolside crossing a small water park and you can reach over the big garden. Welcome back to your childhood.
If you are feeling lazy and don’t want to go outside then even being in the resort has so many activities that you can do. You can be in the pool or there are water park too where you can ride and experience the adventure of water rides. If you are a fitness lover then you can spend your “me" time over in their fitness room or can play indoor games too and trust me it makes you equally happy as you roaming outside. If it’s rain outside or too hot to step out and still you don’t want to sit in the room then you can do activities over here. Service of the resort if good and behavior of the staff are also kind. They treat their guest with honor and hospitality.
How to reach:
Whenever we discuss beach destination of India then Goa is the ideal destination for us, but we always get confused that how to travel Goa as there are so many options available nowadays. You can reach to this tiny state by road, railway, flight, and… and… and… by Cruise also.
1. By Road:
This is one of the best experience that any traveler can have. There are numbers of buses available also so you can even do a road trip with your family. The nearest or main bus stand is Kadamba bus stand at Panaji. Apart from this Goa tourism also has its own bus facilities, which is accessible from major cities and states.
2. By Railway:
This is something that every person should try because while traveling from railway you are able to watch beautiful nature and be one with it, getting the experience of the tunnel and when the train passes through the Dudhsagar waterfall then the view becomes just worth millions. The main railway station of Goa is located at Margo. This station is known as Vasco Da Gama station or Madgoan station.
3. By Flight:
This is also a good experience that you can have yet it is bit expensive rather than two, hence it depends that when you are booking your tickets and from which city you are traveling. If you are traveling by air the nearest airport is Dabolim International Airport which is located at Dabolim city. You can get regular flights for Goa from cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Jaipur, Kolkatta etc.
4. By Cruise:
So, apart from this, you can even reach Goa by this luxury journey of the cruise from Mumbai to Goa. This is India’s first domestic luxury cruise liner Angriya. This luxurious cruise equipped with restaurants, bars, swimming pool, 24 hours coffee shop, spa and accommodation for around 400 passengers. This wonderful journey from Mumbai to Goa takes 16 hours and so you are able to watch a breathtaking view of sunset and sunrise against the backdrop of an infinite ocean. If you are traveling from Mumbai then the cruise will depart at 5:00 p.m. and you will reach at Goa by 9:00 a.m. next day and so on for Goa to Mumbai. The price for the luxurious service starts from 4300 INR and it goes up to 7650 INR per person. The rooms are categories in 3 sections couples, families and buddies group. Apart from this, you need to pay 2000 INR per person for food which includes breakfast, dinner, snacks, juices, and tea/coffee.
Truly, if you want to invest your money in the best beach family destination then South Goa is all for you. Last but not the least; this is my point of view and my experience. And I hope this will help you for your Goa trip.
With this I have one more surprise for those who are singles just like me, adventure lover, partyholic, willing to go and experience casinos and many more things then don’t go anywhere because I have something for you. So, wait for the next and till then take care… Goa is also a single’s paradise.
Its me Trishaa signing off untill the next one. Catch you over next side. Till then, “Keep Escaping…”

Marine services: A Distinctive Oceanic Operation
Boats, ships, oil tankers, and other watercraft, need timely repair, maintenance, testing, and services for their proper functioning. Since most of the time these watercraft are in the mid-sea or ocean and are very rarely seen off the sea region, providing services pertaining to these sectors is not an easy and simple job. Since the sectors include services like logistics, storage, and transportation, they have to be maintained well and the fleet included must be always in an immaculate condition. Hence to carry out such a job, a service of a professional organization that is fully well-versed in the area is of utmost need. While marine repair services and marine maintenance services must have proper facilities for the proposed tasks, dry docks that resemble a wide and lengthy basin is made use of, preferably well below a vessel’s waterline. The area is first flooded with sufficient water so that the ship or any other vessel can be brought into the area for suitable actions. The water is then drained out so that the vessel comes up on a dry platform on which the necessary work can be carried out.
Although most of the marine service providers and technicians perform emergency repairs, irrespective of the locations, periodic maintenance or complete overhauls are usually carried out while the particular boats and ships are at the pier side or during periods of reduced operating status like nonpeak charters or shipping seasons and during such instances, the water crafts are taken to these kinds of special dry dock facilities at regular intervals. Marine services are not only confined to on-water repairs, dry-dock maintenance, and overhaul or upgrade boats and ships but these services are more than those usual and commonly known services. Marine services other than repair and maintenance services offer various offshore services, like oil and freight transportation, vessel manning, brokering services, and surveying too. Likewise, marine brokerage services also specialize in commercial vessels and their international shipping services and so on.
One of the important activities that the marine services comprise is marine surveying. This service is very strongly associated with marine insurance, wherein damage and salvage, accident, and fraud investigation are involved. One of the instances where this kind of marine surveying is needed is to provide suitable and justifiable evidence in support of damages that may be claimed made against the insurer especially when the insurance companies lack the proficiency required to perform a comprehensive assessment.
Universal Marine Surveying and Consultancy Services have been offering excellent marine services to their esteemed clients and have the credit of being one of the properly qualified and well-organized teams of professionals who carry out almost all marine-related activities in a methodical way. Their host of marine-related services includes the standard repairs and maintenance of vessels, naval architecture and design services, lab testing services, dry and wet cargo services, petroleum products and other lubricant testing, wear metal analysis, and much more.

Journal: June 13, 2001
• Place order to sell 500 shares of American Physicians Capital (ACAP) at a limit of 20.40. • Place order to buy 900 shares of Cascade Corp. (CAE) at 9.00 limit. • Increase the limit buy price on Wellsford Real Properties (WRP) to 16.45; change order to 600 shares.
A nickel between me and break-even Still pushing to get back to break-even. I’d have achieved that goal by now if I had been a nickel more generous with my limit buy on Wellsford Real Properties (WRP). Wellsford just bought back 24% of its shares at a huge discount to intrinsic value. Hence, intrinsic value per share just jumped at least $3 per share. The shares moved up to reflect this accretive action by management, but now they’re soft again. It’s not often that I’ll raise my initial buy price on a stock (usually, I let missed opportunities be), but in this case 18.50 now is cheaper than 16.45 was back before the buyback. Increase the limit buy price on Wellsford to 18.50, but reduce the number of shares to 600.
Also, sell 500 shares of the American Physicians Capital (ACAP) position at 20.40 limit, good until canceled. I took advantage of a no-brainer price when I took such a large position, but at this price I’ll scale it back to a still large but more average-sized position. I continue to be quite bullish on American Physicians, with the biggest risk being a dumb acquisition by management.
Back to basics With only a couple of months until the end of Strategy Lab, I have to say I’m quite disappointed with my performance thus far. As I did during my first Strategy Lab last round, I kicked off the round buying several stocks that possessed a lot of short-term price risk. Optimism (associated with the beginning of a new round) and a wad of cash (fake, granted by MSN MoneyCentral) make for toxic twins in the world of investing. I should have been smarter, even if it is only fake money. And once having bought such securities with near-term price risk, I should never have sold them simply because they fell in the near term. Had I simply held all the stocks I bought this round rather than selling some of them, I’d be much better off. This was largely true last round as well. Ok, two strikes. Will MoneyCentral give me a third chance?
It is not in my nature to scramble for excess short-term return by taking on extra risk. Hence, you will not see me take massive stock positions or leveraged options positions simply to try to shoot the lights out in these last few months. As I did last round, I’ll try to recover by going back to basics.
Start off with a new order to buy 900 shares of Cascade Corp. (CAE) at 9.00 limit, good until canceled. Cascade, a maker of forklift parts with significant branding and market share, was the subject of a management-led buyout offer earlier this spring. The offer put Cascade in play, and after a well-run bidding process that included more than 10 parties, an outside group offered to buy the company out for 17.25. Management came back with a late 17.50 offer that was properly rejected by the board.
The buyout fell through when the outside group encountered some skittishness on the part of lenders. Not surprising; several deals have been scuttled because of weak debt markets. What is surprising is that there was a final offer from the group -- $15.75 a share -- that was rejected by the board as well. In other words, a leveraged buyout can be done at prices 50% to 100% greater than the current price, and sharks are circling.
Recently CB Richard Ellis’ (CBG) going-private transaction got a shot in the arm when it successfully placed junk debt in an oversubscribed offering. This is a good sign that with lower interest rates offsetting the economic risk, the junk markets are attempting a comeback. I expect Cascade to be taken out in a reasonable time frame. This illiquid stock, which was transferred from the hands of long-term owners to arbitrageurs during the bidding process, was unceremoniously dumped by those arbitrageurs when the deal fell apart. Now approaching half the price bid just a few months ago, the shares of this old economy diehard appear a bargain at 4.3 times trailing nonpeak EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) with significant free cash production. The stock is at about three times peak EBITDA. No doubt the company faces rougher economic times ahead, but with a trio of bidders willing to pay over $16 a share just a few months ago, there is a margin of safety here.

Electric Cars Could Destroy the Electric Gridor Fix It Forever
Electric vehicles are a fixture of many a transportation utopia, and for good reasons. In a world still reliant on private transportation, they promise everything from lower pollution to higher torque. However, at least one counterpoint mars the dream of exhaust-free street racing: Today’s grid would likely fail catastrophically if the entire US car fleet immediately made the switch to running on electricity.
Let’s call this scenario of massive, simultaneous electric vehicle uptake the Pluggening. “If every customer starts buying electric vehicles, obviously that would cause a big impact on utilities,” says Mohammed Beshir, a professor of electrical engineering at USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering. Picture transformers spewing sparks like they were celebrating Chinese New Year. That scenario, though, is pure fantasy. Current EV trends show low to moderate uptake rates. And sure, if utilities don’t pay attention, they could wind up like proverbial frogs in simmering pots, not realizing they’re being boiled alive until it’s too late to hop to safety.
The good news is that massive—if not immediate—EV uptake could be a boon to the grid, by leveling out daily electricity demand and possibly even storing renewable energy in cars’ batteries, to be discharged when needed.
The utilities have plenty of time to plan ahead. Beshir, who has been researching how EVs might impact the grid for the better part of a decade, says he doesn’t see any real impact to the grid until around 15 percent of vehicles on the road go electric. A Bloomberg New Energy Finance report released last summer projects that level of uptake will happen by 2035.
Even if utilities are paying attention to the broad trends, they need to watch out for a patchwork Pluggening that could hit cities, towns, or neighborhoods where electric cars catch on quicker than elsewhere. Let’s call this scenario Keeping Up With the Muskses. “If each home on a block gets one electric vehicle, that’s probably equivalent to double that block’s existing power load,” says Beshir.
That’s a problem, because utilities traditionally dole out electricity in hub and spoke fashion. Power plants make the juice and ship it out over high voltage wires. The lines that send power to your lights, refrigerator, and Tesla Model 3 do the same for your neighbors. If demand surges in one EV-happy neighborhood, it could cause flickering lights—or worse—in nearby areas. Like politics, problems with the grid may seem national—but most begin locally.
The first sign the local grid has reached is limit will come from pole-top transformers, those cylindrical metal things you can hear humming loudly on hot, summer days, when everyone’s blasting the A/C. These spin down high voltage electricity from the transmission wires to the relatively tame 120V and 240V suitable for residential use.
Unlike the intractable complications of politics, girding the grid for an uptick in demand is straightforward. Utilities can start by installing more transformers, so more high voltage electricity can come down to residential levels. Eventually, as more people replace their internal combustion engined cars with Teslas and Chevy Bolts, the utilities will need to transmit more power.
The fix in this case is to add new wires capable of transmitting more power. This stuff isn’t hard to explain, it’s just expensive. By the way, those expenses are something you and every other electricity user will likely pay for a share of, regardless of whether you’ve bought an EV.
But Beshir and other experts think EVs will provide enough benefits to at least balance out at least some of the cost of those upgrades. So long as the electrification of personal transportation doesn’t completely restructure the American Workday. This is due to every economist’s old pals: supply and demand.
“On a daily time scale, demand typically starts off low, and builds through the early morning as people start getting ready for work and take care of things around the house,” says Jarod Kelly, a vehicle systems analyst engineer at Argonne National Laboratory’s Center for Transportation Research. Demand peaks around 6 pm, when workers get home, make dinner, watch Netflix…
… Then chill, as electrical demand drops into an overnight valley. These nighttime hours—when EVs are conveniently parked in garages and curbs—are the cheapest time to charge. This fact isn’t lost on EV manufacturers. “Most EVs have systems that allow you to say, ‘OK, I am leaving at 8 am,’ so the computer can calculate the rate at which it needs to charge so it is fully charged by the time you need to leave,” says Kelly. In this way, individual EVs spread their demand for juice over the course of the night.
This charging pattern would be ideal for utilities. In order to satisfy the day and night peaks and valleys of electricity demand, utilities typically have to spin up, and shut down power plants. All that cycling is expensive. Remember, EVs can use as much energy, or even more, an entire home to charge. In an ideal situation—where cars in a given neighborhood or city stagger out their overnight charging needs—the valleys would raise to meet average daytime uses. With more overall demand, and less diurnal variation, generating electricity gets be cheaper. And, because of the way utilities are regulated, that cost gets reflected in your bill, regardless of what you drive.
EVs are so attractive to utilities, that some even offer rebates to users who install charging stations in their homes. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power hands out up to $500 rebates. Other utilities around the US offer similar deals, such as special rates if you pledge to charge during nonpeak, overnight hours.
Even better, more electric cars could help utilities usher in more renewable energy. Notwithstanding the US government’s recent announcement of a 30 percent tariff on imported photovoltaic cells, solar power is growing. Given the obvious—the sun shines during the day—this could offset some of the demand from centralized power plants.
EVs are batteries on wheel. Drivers with access to daytime plugs could fill up on energy while the sun is shining, then discharge that power back into the grid when demand peaks, earning the driver a little rebate. “And wind typically blows harder in the evening,” Kelly says, so nighttime EV chargers could suck up and store some of that energy, discharging their excess after driving to work to meet mid-morning demand. This modular approach to storing renewable energy tackles one of the biggest problems facing the wind and solar industries.
Finally, this whole swirling trend of EVs and renewable energy is happening while utilities nationwide are adopting so-called smart grid technologies—sensors and other feedback mechanisms that allow for real time models of demand. This is partly a response to past catastrophes, like the 2013 Northeastern blackouts. So, if electric vehicles do collide with the grid, it’s because utilities took their eyes of the road.
