The Grenfell Tower fire was one of the most appalling tragedies in recent British history. The two-day blaze killed 72 people and in turn, led to a national uproar. Still to this day, millions of Brits remember those who lost their lives during the fire, with communities regularly coming together through a slew of different mediums. One community-driven collective that was launched off the back of the Grenfell fire is Grenfell Athletic FC, a local grassroots football team that was founded to help young men come together. The football club — launched by Rupert Taylor — has just unveiled a brand-new football kit, made in collaboration with Nike and Kitlocker, that features cuts of fabric donated from items of clothing that survived the Grenfell fire, including some garments worn by the survivors on the night of their escape.

The new kits have been launched under a project titled “Fabric of the Community,” with each shirt designed to include a subtle perimeter area surrounding the club crest, reserved for a bespoke cut of fabric. One survivor from the Grenfell fire was Nick Burton, whose wife was tragically the 72nd victim of the fire. He donated the shirt worn on the night of the fire, using this project as a moment to gain further closure from the incident.

Commenting on the donation of his shirt for the “Fabric of the Community Campaign,” Mr Burton said: “This is one of the only connections that I have to my home. I feel that it’s time to let go and now it will live on as part of the fabric of the community – the community that is everything to us.”

The clean-cut shirt, which will be worn by Grenfell Athletic’s men’s and women’s teams during the 2024/25 season, is designed with NFC technology that’s intricately crafted into the shirts by Kitlocker, allowing fans to digitally interact with the kit, as an NFC chip is embedded behind the club badge, thus linking to a touching video that relates to the shirt’s donated fabric.

Along with victims of the Grenfell fire, several non-local supporters of the club have also donated to the campaign, including Hector Bellerin who donated a match-worn shirt from his time at Arsenal. One Direction star Louis Tomlinson has also donated one of his treasured Doncaster Rovers shirts.

Her fits always go crazy, a fourth of the treasury at storms end is set aside for her favorite green enameling and gold accessories. She’s kinda the star of court and thinks Roberta has gotten lazy and Stana has too much of a stick up her ass to be a good queen. The Father Christmas Letters Promo Post

Summary: FCL is an edited version of a series of letters that Tolkien wrote to his young children in the run-up to Christmas, for an impressive number of years (1920 to 1943). It is an elaborate take on the tradition that Father Christmas is real and receives children’s letters. Tolkien writes his answers in the name, voice, and hand of Father Christmas, and later also adds contributions by FC’s chief friends and helpers to the correspondence, North Polar Bear and the elf Ilbereth. This elaborate game of make-believe keeps growing more complex over the years, gradually building up a story ‘verse of Father Christmas’s life and adventures at the North Pole. The edited originals are real hand-written letters received by the children, with envelopes, hand-drawn illustrations, and hand-drawn stamps. The letters also remain responses to actual messages from the children, although their letters are not included.

Why should I check out this canon? Many reasons! Father Christmas and his growing number of friends are charming and fun, and their adventures get increasingly elaborate and exciting. There is a peppering of Tolkienian jokes. The artwork and calligraphy are wonderful (they also get increasingly colourful and complex). If you are looking for insight into Tolkien’s mind, while he was writing The Hobbit and The Lord of Rings, there are all sorts of tantalizing links to the Legendarium and related bits of lore (which of course just are asking for even more fic crossover to happen!) If you are interested in Tolkien’s conlangs (and his linguistic interest in Finnish and in writing systems), there are bits of that, too! If you are looking for insight into the experiences of Tolkien and his children, there are all sorts of touching and heart-warming hints and clues. There are bits of light verse, too, if you like Tolkien’s poetry.

Where can I get this? There are multiple editions, often as hardcover, and the book has been translated into many languages. The book should be relatively easy to get in local libraries or second-hand. Something to be watched out for are the two main editions under different titles: “The Father Christmas Letters” is the original selection made by Baillie Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien’s wife, in 1976, especially with young readers in mind. “Letters from Father Christmas” is a more comprehensive selection published in 1999 and is especially aimed at Tolkien fans. There is an audiobook version available on Audible and some readings from the work on YouTube. Electronic versions are not so easily accessible, although the Internet Archive has copies borrowable by readers with disabilities. Selections from the artwork can be found online and in books on Tolkien’s art.

What fanworks already exist? The AO3 tag has 23 works, most of them rated General or Teens and categorized as Gen. Among them, there is quite a high number of crossovers, many of them with other Tolkien works, but also with a handful of non-Tolkien canons. As you would expect, with such a canon, some of the fic is epistolary or includes letters! family connections — sunyoung has two younger brothers that i'd love to use as a way to tie families together! the middle one was born in 1995 and hates sunyoung with a fiery passion, works for the immigration policy division and was never recruited to the club; the youngest one was born in 2002, looks up to sunyoung and is a 2024 chessmaster looking to be a civil court judge one day. perhaps your muse has relatives that would be dating/married to one of them, or got entangled with them at work in any way?

perpetrator — during her initiation days in 2013, sunyoung was quick to form alliances with a couple chessmasters and create a divide in the group. as a result, during a trial, a "rival" chessmaster caused an "accident" that resulted in a hand injury for her and set her off on her path of revenge and general bitchdom. would love to have someone take up this role!

human rights — sunyoung has always been an activist for human rights (funny, i know), and she was elected president of the snu human rights committee three years in a row, 2014-2016. throughout the undergrad program she would organize surveys, affirmative actions and projects to discuss and mitigate discrimination and sexism in the university. i would love to have some fellow students helping her champion the cause - or on the other hand, they can find her activism shallow and bothersome!

paganini who? — sunyoung plays the violin and loves classical music. it would be an adorable meet-cute of sorts if your muse walks in on her practicing one day as it's a rare opportunity to witness her softer side! (yes it does exist, shocking!)

favors — sunyoung knows everyone and plays 4d chess with herself to try and place people in positions that will boost her own power in the club and beyond. as a result, she can make almost anything happen for you by talking to a guy who knows another guy - but for a price, of course.

more favors? — it's also very possible that sunyoung one day overplayed her hand and failed miserably, and now she needs to run to your muse for help. she'll owe you big time and hate every second of it, but she won't let a debt go unpaid.

i just had this thought of nico dressing up as sirius black for a show that happened to be during halloween so now i need to know what would the other characters dress up as

oh my godsldkfj i've actually thought of this but mainly as like one specific halloween: one where the friend group dresses up as the gaang. i just think they'd fit so perfectly😭 (for reference: nico as zuko, jason as aang, piper as katara, leo as sokka, and then either will as toph or will as appa and kayla as toph)

i don't think that nico would really ever dress up as sirius or an hp character just because he definitely has a vehement hatred of j*r (same as i doLKJDS) and especially with such a large platform, he wouldn't want to be promoting hp in any sort of way - however, i can definitely see the marauders fandom latching onto him as a fc for either sirius or regulusdfks (i mean, if he was real, i'd probably think the same)

as for other costumes, i bet that nico usually goes super basic and is like. a skeleton. one halloween he'll let rachel go crazy and add like fully done zombie makeup or smth. he likes the classic 'scary'/halloween-y costumes, whereas will loves dressing up as classic non-scary halloween costumes (aka pirates, princes, disney characters, and i think that an ask once mentioned him dressing up as apollo and he WOULD. one halloween he'd dress up as his dad, and another he'd dress up as like, the actual god apollo-

actually that's another group costume, of will nico and leo dressing up as their respective godly parents, despite them not technically existing in this au, they'd just choose the gods based on who they relate tosljdk (however, since heroes of olympus exists, i can def see them taking like some online quiz of "who's your godly parent?"
