GUESS WHO JUST BOUGHT THE "DORAEMON : NOBITA'S NEW DINOSAUR" MANGA?
That's right, it's me!! 🙂↕
I loved the movie so much. Seeing as the Space Heroes manga had some differences to the movie story, I got interested to buy this one.
I don't think anyone has talked about the differences between the manga and the movie yet(?) So, I wanna talk about it! (SPOILERS FROM BOTH MANGA AND MOVIE BELOW)
Disclaimer : note that the manga is translated to Indonesian, so the original Japanese may also have some differences compared to the one that I bought.
The first difference is how the story started: in the movie, our main characters visit a dinosaur exhibition with what seems to be dinosaur animatronics.
While in the manga, it looks like just a normal dinosaur exhibition. It’s also revealed that Suneo’s dad was the one who got them the tickets.
Rough translation :
Suneo : "it's so hard to get the ticket to this dinosaur exhibit, but well, my papa still managed to get them from his connections"
This next one is a big difference compared to the movie; the manga already references Nobita's Dinosaur on page 8 by mentioning Piisuke. Nobita even mentions that he wants to see Piisuke again.
Nobita : I want to meet Piisuke one more time...
The manga also makes Shizuka, Suneo, and Gian's doubts about Nobita finding a dinosaur more understandable. In the movie, he said: "Not a fossil; I'll find a real, living dinosaur!"
Their reactions will probably raise some eyebrows because Nobita had already found a dinosaur before! So, why are they doubting him about doing it again?
This could only be explained if this movie takes place in a different universe than Nobita's Dinosaur, but the thing is, Piisuke made a cameo in this movie.
(Someone said that the director confirmed this movie took place in a different universe from Nobita's Dinosaur and Nobita somehow got memories about raising Piisuke from his alternate self, idk if this info is real)
Well, in the manga, he said :
Nobita : " Not leaves! (Earlier, Gian found a plant fossil) I'll find Nobisaurus! A dinosaur species based on my name!
Gian : Interesting!! If you don't find it, what will you do?
Nobita : If I don't find it..I'll eat peanuts with my eyes!
Shizuka : talking carelessly again…
Gian & Suneo : GYAHAHA WE LOOK FORWARD TO NOBISAURUS!
It's one thing to find a living dinosaur and another to find a completely new species. Of course, they will have doubts.
The way Nobita found the dinosaur egg is also different:
In the movie, while talking to himself about how he'll find a real dinosaur, he tripped on a rock(which later revealed to be a dinosaur egg). As for the manga :
Nobita : Just look! I'll definitely find....peanuts...NO! Dinosaurs!!
Announcer : We will close the building soon..
Nobita : I..still can..
Shizuka : Nobita, we'll head home first, okay?
Suneo : Next time, I'll bring some peanuts, yeah?
Nobita : My hands are starting to get numb...
Nobita : this...this is it
Next one is Doraemon's reaction to the egg :
Doraemon : AGAIN AND AGAIN, YOU KEEP SAYING THAT!
Doraemon : There's no way we'd find a Dinosaur egg that often, right??
Nobita : This is defintely an egg!
Nobita : Which is why, Doraemon, bring out the time cloth!
While waiting for the 'egg' to turn, Nobita dreamed of Piisuke 🥹
Nobita : Piisuke..this time, what kind of dinosaur will I meet?
...and this comment from Doraemon after the egg hatched!
Doraemon : Still, I didn't think you'd hatch a dinosaur egg again! I'm surprised!
After that, things pretty much went the same; Nobita showed Kyu and Myu to his friends, Kyu and Myu make a lot of commotion, leading to Nobita's mother to come upstairs. They try to hide Kyu and Myu by using the spatial movement crayon, however, the townspeople see Kyu and Myu. Understanding that Kyu and Myu have reached their full size, they should return to their time. Nobita has trouble accepting this, but decides it might be the best option. And so on...
Oh, there's one more addition :
Nobita : Need my help?
Shizuka : Please look away!
Yeah, okay, probably the only manga addition I don't like.
Also, This is just an interesting thing I noticed about the indonesian translation :
In the old translations, they just made everyone call Shizuka as her name ; "Shizuka" not her nickname "Shizu-chan" or "Shizuka-chan" (which was why I had no idea Shizu-chan was her nickname in the manga)
She also calls Doraemon as just "Doraemon" and not "Dora-chan"
So, I was a little surprised they changed it in this translation :
They don't include other honorifics like -san and -kun though.
#doraemon#doraemon : nobita's new dinosaur#Nobita's New Dinosaur#long post#I wanna go home and re-read all my Doraemon mangas#but ugh....university...😮💨#wanna buy the Stand by Me Light Novel next

Doraemon Movie Review: Nobita's New Dinosaur (2020)
What is Doraemon? The title character of the Doraemon manga and anime is a blue robotic cat from the 22nd Century who keeps an array of high-tech gadgets in a portable pocket dimension on his belly, and has traveled from the future to improve the fortunes of a hapless schoolboy named Nobita. Although relatively obscure in the English-speaking world, Doraemon is a Mickey-Mouse-level cultural icon in East Asia (and some other regions, too). The Doraemon franchise was a big part of my childhood, and there are still elements of it that I enjoy now.
Doraemon has released theatrical films almost annually since 1980, most of which involve Nobita and his friends (kind Shizuka, brash Gian, and crafty Suneo) getting swept into adventures thanks to Doraemon's gadgets. Despite being of potentially broad appeal to fans of science fiction and animated films, there are very few English reviews of the Doraemon movies, so I'm embarking on a project to write about all the films that have come out so far. Good luck to me…
Movie premise: Nobita revives a fossilized double-yolked egg that hatches into two feathered dinosaurs.
My spoiler-free take: A good Doraemon movie that manages to differentiate itself from other Mesozoic-themed stories in the franchise while taking inspiration from recent scientific advances.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS AFTER THIS POINT
Review: I’ve already shared a few brief thoughts about this movie and discussed some of the scientific references therein. At risk of repeating myself too much, I was generally impressed by the amount of up-to-date paleontological research it incorporates and even builds important plot points around. No, the portrayal of bird evolution in this movie is not particularly accurate to our current understanding, but like I’ve said before, I appreciated that the dinosaurian origin of birds was a primary theme here, and it’s certainly an appropriate angle for a 2020 movie about dinosaurs to tackle. As mainstream movies go, Nobita’s New Dinosaur stands out in how much respect it pays to its scientific inspirations.
As for the story itself, I was originally apprehensive about how this film would be able to distinguish itself from Nobita’s Dinosaur. However, though the beginning plays out in a similar way (probably intentionally so), I felt that the second half of this movie carves out its own niche quite nicely. If anything, the climax here has more parallels with Nobita and the Knights on Dinosaurs in how it involves the end-Cretaceous mass extinction and reveals that there’s no true villain in the story. In a way, I think Nobita's New Dinosaur combines the narrative strengths of those two previous Mesozoic-themed tales. Nobita raising two dinosaurs is a more engaging setup than Suneo running around under the impression that he’s hallucinating in Nobita and the Knights on Dinosaurs, whereas the protagonists’ actions turning out to have a major impact on the history of life on Earth gives the plot slightly more depth and complexity than the straightforward “boy and his pet” story of Nobita’s Dinosaur.
If I have any (non-scientific) criticism for this movie, it may be the cameo from Piisuke, the plesiosaur from Nobita’s Dinosaur. Although touching and well-intended, Piisuke’s appearance raises some confusing questions about continuity. Some parts of this movie (such as Nobita’s friends lacking faith in the possibility that he could find living dinosaurs) imply that it takes place in a separate continuity from Nobita’s Dinosaur, but Piisuke showing up, complete with Nobita getting a flashback to their time together, seems to run counter to this premise. The fact that Nobita never fully realizes that Piisuke is there (as Piisuke rescues him while he is drowning and departs before he regains consciousness) might also be disappointing.
Star rating: ★★★★☆

PC Engine - Doraemon Nobita no Dorabian Night (HuCard Version)
Title: Doraemon Nobita no Dorabian Night / ドラえもん のび太のドラビアンナイト
Developer: Now Production Co. Ltd.
Publisher: Hudson Soft
Release date: 6 December 1991
Catalogue No.: HC91051
Genre: Platform Action
Format: HuCard
While America got the brilliantly horrendous Disney's Darkwing Duck as a region exclusive on the TurboGrafx-16, Japanese PC Engine gamers were much better treated with a nice surprise. This Doraemon game is a side-scrolling platformer with a simple, colorful look. You have to rescue your friends who have dived into various books and are pursued by the inhabitants within. You start off having to avoid the wandering beasties, but eventually get hold of such items as a gun that freezes anything in your path for a moment. Along the way you get to ride on dinosaurs, crawl under moving stone blocks, creep along precarious ledges, and slide down water chutes.
On 29 May 1992, this game was re-issued once again as a Super CD-ROM2 update. The Super CD-ROM2 version goes by the catalogue code HCD2030 and is largely the same game, but it contains new cinemas with CD music and voice samples. The Super CD-ROM2 version also comes with the full vocal version of the Doraemon theme from the TV show. The HuCard version's chip-tune rendition of that same theme song is also just as equally excellent.

See this is one of the nice things about Doraemon. You want a movie in which people time travel to the Mesozoic? That’s Nobita’s Dinosaur (and its 2006 remake)!
A movie in which people time travel to the Last Glacial Period instead? That’s Nobita and the Birth of Japan (and its 2016 remake)!
A movie in which non-avian dinosaurs secretly survived to the present? That’s Nobita and the Knights on Dinosaurs!
A movie in which people keep extinct animals alive in a remote sanctuary? That’s Nobita and the Kingdom of Clouds! (Also Nobita and the Island of Miracles, but I don’t recommend that one.)
A movie in which people replay the history of life over again? That’s Nobita's Diary on the Creation of the World!
A movie in which people time travel to the Mesozoic again but incorporates 21st-Century knowledge about dinosaurs? That’s Nobita's New Dinosaur!
And this is not even getting into all the times dinosaurs have shown up in the manga and TV series...
What would you like to see from dinosaur films in the future? I'm not talking about docs like Walking With and stuff like that. I mean like a normal movie with dinosaurs as a focus. I am a horror movie fan so I would like to see a horror movie with cretaceous period dinosaurs but without them being monsters who only want to kill. Like a T-Rex has no reason to chase a bunch of little humans around for food but it probably wouldn't like people getting too close to its meal. Side note: There are really good horror movies with birds as a focus but there isn't a lot of them so I would like to see more.
I'm not big on film horror (reading horror is fine tho) in general, but I am firmly of the opinion that "everything is better with dinosaurs"
including birds, of course
so just, more things that casually include them for no apparent reason would be cool
more time travel movies that are about going into deep time and not meeting your own grandmother
multiverse or alternate universe movies that explore the possibilities of "what if" in earth's history
that kind of thing

If Nobita's Dinosaur had been written today.
Knowing of Fujiko F. Fujio's interest in paleontology, he almost certainly would have been aware of the dinosaurian origin of birds had he lived to present day. It is nice to see that recent Doraemon works made after his passing (such as the 2017 episode "Snow and Dinosaurs" and the 2020 film Nobita's New Dinosaur) have leaned into that.
This might be part of the "main character Shizuka" AU; I've deliberately left it ambiguous.

[ Throwback : Doraemon New Generation 2005 ]
"DORAEMON THE MOVIE is coming back!" If we went back to 2005, it would be very exciting news because it was a new era of the Doraemon movie franchise. The whole new anime style, the new dubbing team changed the entire set. Importantly, it was also a year where no new movies were released. Which I guess might be for fans to get to know and familiarize with the new Doraemon style.
However, news about new generation movies at that time slowly revealed itself little by little since the spring which people would follow the news on the magazine. In that era, the internet had already arrived but most of the news is still in print media.
At that time, the official had released Doraemon magazine. A special issue welcomes the new generation called "Motto!Doraemon (もっと!ドラえもん)" along with updates on series news and new movie production. There are a total of 5 volumes as follows...
ㆍVolume 1: Spring 2005
ㆍVolume 2: Summer 2005
ㆍVolume 3: Fall 2005 (Dinosaurs of Nobita 2006 officially revealed.)
ㆍVolume 4: Winter, New Year 2006
ㆍVolume 5: Spring 2006 (after the movie has been released in Japan)
