as always i remain absolutely gobsmacked by the preponderance of takes in certain corners of this fandom that boil down to "lan xichen missed all of jin guangyao's red flags" while rarely if ever considering that nie mingjue himself should qualify as a walking red flag. the personification of a parental advisory notice. the human embodiment of a surgeon general's warning.

because even leaving aside whether or not he would care about what nhs did to meng shi’s remains or his choice to lure the juniors to yi city or his choice to convince mxy to sacrifice himself or any of his actions leading up to qin su’s suicide (because all of those things involve harming jgy and people nmj does not care about), nmj would absolutely be furious at nhs for using lxc as a tool to commit murder.

if there is one person in the jianghu that nmj genuinely cared for and never wanted to harm other than nhs, it was lxc.

Nie Mingjue is the opposite of a man trying to escape the narrative. He's constantly being pushed OUT of the narrative and yet he keeps coming back in. He's a corpse before the story even starts he was a minor blip in the mc's life he should NOT be this deep in the narrative and yet there he is. Jgy literally killed him in his efforts to get out of the narrative himself and then nmj was like Fuck You (haunts you thereby tapping you both in the narrative forever) his brother's need for vengeance for his death is the reason the plot even exists he's so inside of the narrative he basically becomes it.

Was Nie Mingjue qi deviating when he insulted JGY's mom, pushed him down the stairs, and tried to cut off his head? Bc those do not seem like the actions of a reasonable and just man in his right mind, but I've seen some people defending that bit recently and I wanted to check (I don't own the book, otherwise I would have looked myself lol)

i'm really glad i haven't seen the posts defending nmj's conduct on the staircase lol. man. okay:

nmj is not qi deviating during that scene in the novel, no. jgy doesn't begin playing turmoil for nie mingjue until after the confrontation on the staircase (and i am not interested in relitigating this discourse again, anyone else who may see this and feel inclined to argue with me). so while i definitely feel that nmj's continued cultivation with baxia has influenced and more deeply entrenched his hatred and distrust of jgy, he is not qi deviating in that moment. his qi deviation happens at the martial conference about two to three months later, if i recall the timeline as laid out in the empathy flashback + wangxian's conversation with lan xichen.

which makes it worse in some respects, doesn't it. 😕

Hi so I have a question and u r very knowledgeable in mdzs lore so I gotta ask, why nmj fierce corpse wanted to kill jgy so bad? Did nmj somehow know jgy killed him?

What if nmj simply died of qi deviation without jgys music, would his fierce corpse still be so obsessed with jgy, even though he had nothing with his death in this scenario?

i've been searching for a post i reblogged from @labyrynth last year that includes a bunch of good discussion on exactly this point, but since i can't find it, the tl;dr version is no, nmj does not realize that jgy triggered his qi deviation.

what nmj does know at the time of his death is that he has been looking down the figurative barrel of impending qi deviation for years already, and that his intense sabre cultivation during the sunshot campaign just advanced the timeline of the inevitable. nmj's intense resentment and hatred towards jgy doesn't stem from jgy being his murderer. it comes from 1) their confrontation on the langya front during the war when nmj witnesses meng yao killing the jin commander who had been abusing him, 2) the whole traumatic mess that goes down between them inside the scorching sun palace right before meng yao assassinates wen ruohan and saves nmj's life, and 3) nmj rightly clocking that the lanling jin are sheltering and covering up xue yang's wiping out of the yueyang chang sect and the baixue temple, so that they can take advantage of his demonic cultivation--but wrongly laying the blame for this completely at jgy's feet instead of placing the blame where it actually belongs, which is with his shitty father.

with /gestures @ the above, all of that taken into consideration, i genuinely believe that even if jgy hadn't been involved in nmj's death, nmj still would have become a fierce corpse from the sheer intensity of his resentment and hatred, and tried to kill him anyway. i think jgy still would have had to desecrate his remains and scatter them across the jianghu to suppress nmj's killing intent.

it makes me wonder, would nhs still think jgy was responsible for nmj's death under those circumstances? 🤷‍♀️ i think it's possible, and just emphasizes how utterly doomed by the narrative jgy was as soon as he sealed nmj's meridians on the langya front and ran away.
