Okay, kittens, here's an old Russian slang lesson: in our language calling a man "blue" means "he's gay".

Englishmen:

A: He's blue.

B: Aw, what happened?

Russians:

A: He's blue.

B: I always knew since the day I saw him, I told'ya!

Well, technically, calling someone gay is using the word for light blue color, "голубой"... because if you called someone in Russian "he is blue", meaning dark blue, "синий", you are calling that person an alcoholic x)

Travel West: July 25, 2021

Day 26. San Francisco here we come! Nicky drove Tommy and I into San Francisco. It was a beautiful ride over the San Francisco Bay Bridge.

San Francisco is a big, busy city. We parked near the Asian Art museum and had an hour to kill before going in so we walked around the area and checked out a terrific farmers market… Gorgeous flowers, very fresh in expensive fruits and vegetables… So many booths full of wonderfulness.

The Asian museum was excellent with several items on exhibit - some as old as 100 A.D. The architecture of the building was Beautiful. There’s a grand historic staircase with marble columns.

The inside of the museum was designed by an Italian architect, Gae Aulenti who also designed the Musee d Orsay and the Pompidou in France. it has a contemporary, minimalistic, and peaceful feel to it. We ate lunch in the café. The chicken coconut curry noodles were tastefully presented and delicious. After the museum we walked to the Painted Ladies… A row of multi million dollar Victorian houses. This section of the city has extremely steep grade hills. At one point while walking up the hill I turned around and looked down the hill and found it dizzying but so cool.

We tried to take a trolley ride but they won’t be running until August 2. We then Uber’d over to the marina. The second we walked down towards the water a black man was playing a bluesy version of “I left my heart in San Francisco“ on his saxophone. There were a few old schooners and lots of action…

Seagulls were perched looking for their share of the fisherman‘s catch. The marina was bustling with activity, especially the closer you got to Pier 39. You could see Alcatraz Prison from the marina. Ghirardelli is a big deal there and the Boudin bakery is famous for their sourdough breads. On the ride back to Nikki‘s house we rode over the Golden Gate Bridge. It was so cool to look back out over the bay, lots of sailboats, billowing sails, all very esoteric with the fog hovering over the bay.

What a great day! By the time we got back into Sacramento most restaurants were closed. We found a place that had come tasty bar food with nice service. Tomorrow will head back to Truckee and hope the air isn’t too smoky from the fires. Today was a wonderful break from the heat and smoke.
