Thinking about art and fiction and concepts of ownership and honestly it's kinda fucked that collaborative and transformative storytelling is literally as old as time and one of the most basic human instincts that exists, but the only good word it we have right now is "fanfiction"

and when you tell people you write fanfiction they think you're some kind of cringe weirdo and possibly pervert and then the whole thing gets derailed by this bizarre side discussion into how "No it's not all porn, it's absolutely everything and anything imaginable, duh, but like, even if it were all porn, that would also be okay". Like I'm all for pointing out the double standards about how published authors who put sex into their stories don't lose any respectability (especially if they're men, and especially if the sex is cishet), but the second I, a fanfiction person, add a romantic arc into my plotty casefic suddenly I'm a fujoshi with shipper brainrot etc etc-

But it's tiring that this is even a focal point

My favourite funny and sad thing is watching people (usually dudes) who clearly either view themselves as above fanfiction or have simply never ever thought of themselves as "the type" to do creative writing discover The Fanfiction Urge, because the way they express it is like. An increasingly passionate and detailed video essay about how Movie should have gone instead, or, my favourite, a story about something cool that happened to them in XCOM or Darkest Dungeon or some other Difficult Game For Serious Gamers and by the end of the post they're legitimately just writing prose. Like look at this! LOOK! Damn if this person didn't speedrun the gamerbro-to-AO3 pipeline just for a sec. And not that there's anything wrong with those formats but it makes you wonder if that's something they'd be interested in exploring more if their wings got unclipped

Or DnD. Small wonder that TTRPGs are becoming so popular when they're one of the few increasingly non-cringe ways to do the extremely basic human urge of Tell Story Collaboratively

A friend of mine had this to say recently about his own struggles with this kind of internal bias:

i'd like to try out Thousand-Year-Old Vampire (a solo role-playing game with minimal rules to make you write your own narrative) and my toxic masculinity is getting in the way. discouraging thoughts include: i'm not creative enough; creative writing is for Floofy Humanities types and i am a Cold STEM type; it's not a real game unless it has Systems that you can Study and Master. would anyone like to say something encouraging?

and honestly that's incredibly illuminating innit isn't it. The splitting off of creative activity (not just fanfiction, either) into something only for Floofy Humanities Types but not Serious People and the way it's linked to whether or not you can make money off it... oof.

ngl i just dont rly care that much for fandoms... i like fanfic, i read it and write it, but i dont rly see fandom as my identity or smth i particularly care about, to me all of it is just the same as me playing with barbie dolls.

i dont think its something special that can be compared to actual literature and i think there are certain problems w booktok people relying on tropes that come from fanfic mentality. its just not the same, and i do wish people who like fanfic would sometimes also read.......some actual books sometimes

i just generally dont see what youre describing as some huge thing or problem, i think anti-kink ppl doxxing artists is the major worrisome thing when it comes to fandoms, but i think the doxxers also take the whole fandom experience too seriously

and i say this as someone who also writes fanfic, so like, it rly isnt me going "fanfic authors/readers are stupid", i find fanfic super cool to explore yourself, fanart taught me sooo much as an artist, i even enjoy roleplaying; all of this serves a very real purpose of exploring things as a human in realms of fiction, and pre-existing characters make that easier. i think that can be very useful, we learn about ourselves through books and stories. i just think fandom should be treated the way it is - playtime with toys ✌️

It really has you begging SOMETHING to happen to somehow make them see that THEY ARE EACH OTHER, THEY ARE THE ONES THEY LIKE. AHHHH IT'S THE SAME PERSON. And when it finally does happen, it's so sweet and satisfying. (I recommend checking out their other fics too! Lots of sweetness.)

Lie To Me, Darling

→ Okay, ngl I JUST now noticed that this one is by the same people as the first one, and I specifically didn't want to put multiple fics by the same people (just say I recommend checking out their other stuff, but not rec separately), but it's too late now and I don't have a 7th JayDick fic to recc that isn't also an author repeat, and I don't want it to be uneven.

But ANYWAY. This one will fuck you up, I can't lie. Unhappy ending, but if you can brave that, ohhh it's so good. It's so damn sweet whilst the good times last, even though you know it's only temporary and it's all going to go to hell at some point... man. It hurts. But it hurts so good. It's beautiful, and I personally think it's worth the pain.

Two Birds on a Wire

→ It's probably laughable that I'm reccing this, since pentapus is one of the authors and their art is like huge in the JayDick fandom, and the fic has more than 22.5k views, which seems to be quite a lot as far as JayDick fics go. But in the event that you haven't read it yet... This is actually the very first JayDick fic I EVER read, it introduced me to the ship, and I just reread it and it's still just as amazing, what a winner to start out with!

The dynamic between Jay and Dick, the way Dick gets so into his undercover role, Jay's emotional turmoil, the action — it's all just absolute chef's kiss! It's so hard to write action well, and these two made this fic so engaging!

All Soulmates Final, No Refunds

Summary: Mystic Waters Grande Hotel sells itself as a luxury soulmate retreat with all manner of couple’s activities. The cost is high, and all is not as it appears on the hotel’s grounds. Dick and Jason go undercover as newlywed soulmates to find out what’s behind the rash of missing persons. And dig up old feelings in the process.

→ (Since empires was collaborating with two different people of the different fics, I don't count that as a repeat).

Well firstly, this is a rare Batman!Dick JayDick! And secondly, yes, one of the ubiquitous soulmate AUs. But with some very interesting twists! Also, like TBOAW above, the action in this is amazing, and absolutely had me on the edge of my seat. Similarly, their undercover personas were lots of fun, and it was very fun to see them push each other further and further with them.

Secrets of the Sea

Word Count: 42,711

Summary: Being a merperson was dangerous enough, but being a merperson captured by pirates? That's got to be one of the worst fates for a merman. Merman Dick Grayson is captured by a slave ship, where he meets Jason Todd, who's a slave on that ship. Together, the two plan an escape. However, they need to put aside their odds first, which is very difficult for the two stubborn men.

→ I have to give you fair warning first, this one is incomplete and hasn't been updated since 2017, so I don't think it's ever going to be finished (but it can't hurt to leave a nice comment!) BUT WAIT, DON'T SCROLL YET, hear me out. It's really good, okay. You do need to mind the warning tags because there is major character death (not Jay or Dick though, and since it's not complete I'm kind of choosing to believe that they're not really dead and later in the story it actually turns out that they managed to survive).

There are a lot of grim things in this story, it's really about survival, but the worldbuilding is fucking phenomenal, and the author drew me right in. The descriptions and the action and emotion, the unexpected magic that they have to figure out? It's all so cool and well done.

Steady On Forward

Summary: Dick Grayson's life has never been easy, but he'd like to think it's been going better lately. He's been operating mainly out of Gotham again for almost a year, and has been in a steady relationship for just over. He knows where he stands with crime-fighting, and the family is all on pretty good terms, considering.

Things are really going pretty well.

Unfortunately, the balance doesn't last long, and old horrors from Dick's past end up dredged up alongside new ones.

This is a story about love and family, but equally so about trauma and healing from it. Please heed the warnings in the preface.

→ Alright, the final JayDick rec, the longest, and the darkest. But wait, again, don't scroll! It's also by far the most hopeful AND FLUFFY. Now, the author is NOT fucking around about heeding those warnings, there's a shitload of them and it's really heavy, hard shit. Do not get me wrong, this fic is going to HURT you. But by the end, it's going to have felt so cathartic, and you're going so feel soft and hopeful and whole. I don't know how they did it, but it's SUCH an emotional rollercoaster. Another commenter on AO3 (mach5plus1) said it better than I could:

I gave this fic my whole heart, it took it, smiled and said “awwww, I’ll take care of it!“

Then started putting pressure on it and I told it “ouch, that hurts”

The fic kept smiling and put more pressure until a piece broke off (last chapter)

and then another (this chapter)

The fic keeps doing it until my heart is shattered into pieces and it’s standing over each shard with a frown saying “oops” (the upcoming chapters)

Then, after finding each piece again and picking them up, the fic will slowly push each piece back into place.

By the end it’ll give my heart back a little different, but somehow better than it was when I gave it away.

It will crush your heart, but it will lovingly patch it back together by the end, I promise. If you can read it without getting triggered, I thought everything was well handled, and it's so worth it. (I recommend checking out their other JayDick fic too, they only have one, but it's a fluffy romcom, so if you need a break after this one, that's there!)

I feel like the fact that its actually both Lilith and Gwendolyn have spent their whole lives dedicated to trying to find a cure could probably have held some kind of weight on Eda at some point. Even though she shouldn't feel guilty or responsible for that, I still feel like it's gotta suck knowing these people have spent so much time on something you know is likely never gonna happen, all for you.

so I've had a lot of different ones over the years.

England

used to genuinely stan him when I first got into Hetalia because i saw a lot of myself in him

i was in a HUGE tea-aboo phase (wannabe British person) and i identified a lot with his personality (snarky/cynical, kind of a hardass, imaginative, lonely)

i watched a lot of British dramas with my parents and read a lot of British poetry and listened to bands like The Police, Genesis, and Jethro Tull so that informed my interest in English history (especially concerning the 19th century)

when i saw punk fan art of him i thought it was super cool and it was the impetus for me to investigate the original punk scene in the 70s/80s (which still informs my fashion sense)

i should mention that never did i fucking EVER gloss over the fact that the actual British empire was a colonizing piece of shit. yes i loved the character, no i didn't conflate him for the irl country of England and its failings

he's no longer my favorite but i do enjoy his design and his cranky old man tendencies

also i defy anyone to come up with a better playlist for him than me so there xx

Scotland

canon be damned, i miss the og sexy redhead

again, genuinely thought he was a cool dude

he informed my habit of dyeing my hair red and getting my cartilage pierced

was on a scottish history kick thanks to the movie brave so he just amped that interest Right The Fuck UP

went so far as to teach myself scottish gaelic

similar to England in thinking he was aesthetically cool. i read up on the history and because of the gaelic i learned i can do a pretty baller (albeit mishmosh) Scottish accent

i was flabbergasted when his canon design came out ngl

nowadays i don't think about him or the UK sibs really at all but they used to be My THING

France

Spain

a bastard-coated bastard with bastard filling

was one of my OG faves because of how sunshiney and ditzy he was

now i like him for his potential to be deceptively valid but also an asshole???

like full on anarchist who would gladly choke the monarchy with his own hands but also will only admit that he fucked up to himself and no one else. you'll have to claw an apology out of him and even then you won't get a proper one

i got interested in Spanish medieval history, specifically during the time of Muslim rulers

it isn't talked about enough look it up stan Al-Andalus she's perfect we love her

i wanna write a fic about Tono but i'd have to get back into learning about Spanish history and it's been a while since I touched on any of that

Romano

bastard energy

love his commentary, one of the funniest characters imo

not super attached to him as i am to the others, but i also think he holds a lot of potential as a character if you were to write him in a grittier fic

mostly i just think he's funny

Denmark

i love me a good himbo with tits you could suffocate in between

randomly got really into him and started teaching myself danish

at one point i was able to think in danish, so there's that

in any event, i think he's fun and funny but i have my own interpretation of him that's much more mellow (closer to how he was portrayed in the first season with a voice actor that sounded like a normal adult man)

i also self ship with him to a lesser degree than france uwu

Prussia

bastard energy but in a polar opposite way to Romano's

he's a stinky man your honor and i wouldn't have him any other way

i also think he's funny

a fascinating mix of nerdy german uncle who wears socks with crocs to the beach and annoying older brother who won't shut up about Star Trek and plays the bass in some local band with his uni buddies

Korea

this guy holds a lot of sentimental attachment to me because he helped me place a lot of feelings and have someone to identify with at a time when i felt really alone

silly as it sounds, i loved this guy so much i wrote full on prose about him

i self-shipped with him for a LONG time, and i guess to a certain extent i do still but not with the same fervency/dependency that i used to (yay personal growth)

i completely understand why the Korean government was pissed and wanted him out of the show but :( i'd still like to see him animated

i still have a keen interest in Korean history (especially from Korean rather than American perspectives)

obligatory fixation on idol groups

but again. never creepy or fetishistic about it. just thought the music was good

I have an observation I'd like to share...

I really believe that reason Hetalia fans stick around, or come and go in huge waves, has almost everything to do with the characters themselves and not the actual content of the franchise.

I think having a large cast of characters that are defined by various generic personalities traits is going to draw people in and out depending on their own irl personal life and development (maybe why we've largely been represented by the teenage population lol)

It's easy to pick one that you can readily identify with, and then a lot of us just fill in the gaps with other things that interest us. There are many many hetalia fans that know better than to give into the ignorant source of the icons, and unfortunately there have been more than enough fans that don't think critically about what isn't actually funny (the original series and much of the first animated seasons).

Subsequently, there's also a lot of fandom portrayals of characters most of us accept in place of canon when the real show/manga is still ignorant, outdated, or just plain inaccurate. Sometimes these headcanons go so far as to collectively change physical features based on a general consensus, or in more blunt terms, unwhite-wash.

That all being said, No!! No arguing on my post, there's an infinite amount of other places to do that, so not here!!! I recognize the bad and reject harmful outdated humor, do not bring up the bad here!!

Personally I've loved having a character that can be encased by his boisterous personality and bad eyesight lol, and I know back when I was a tween and had just discovered the series I'm sure I said or imitated very stupid things!!

As people it's our responsibility to learn and grow, it is NOT our responsibility to punish and hurt others (especially minors) for their mistakes.
