Unmasking the white lies of BJP on the issue of smaller states
At the outset let me clarify that the purpose of this article is to investigate the real agenda of reasons behind BJP’s  supposed support for smaller states in the light of the controversy behind renewed call for separate state of Gorkhaland.
Background for other such demands :
Vidarbha , Saurashtra, Harit Pradesh (western UP), Bundelkhand, Poorvanchal (eastern UP).
Before we even talk of Gorkhaland we should examine why BJP has not divided Maharashtra, Gujarat and UP , states where it is in power  and has also been in power earlier. Logic and discussions aside the fact of the matter is the BJP remains at heart a political party which is hungry for power at whatever cost.  It’s not much different from the Congress in these matters . Remember the Congress was always unwilling to share power with the Muslim League in undivided India which ultimately led to creation of the monstrosity called Pakistan. Similarly , the BJP is fine with larger states where it is in power but finds great deal of empathy for division of any state where it is not in power , provided of course that it smells coming to power in newly created states.
The creation of Telengana by Congress recently was also with the same logic ( of coming to power) and hence the congress party has no reason to hail my views on the above. These supposed national parties have lost all credibility in their thirst for power that none of their leaders commands much respect or has any farsighted views on what should be the logic for creation of any new state.
Most people who are non-partisan like me will tell you that creation of states on linguistic lines was the biggest blunder for Nehru which will haunt India for a long time to come. Any new state created must only be for better administration purposes only.
I am coming across a lot of people on social media commenting on Gorkhaland issue without knowing anything of current situation in Bengal or its hills. Hence it is important to educate my friends that things are not as what is seen from far. The reality is different. Totally different.
Firstly the core issue of Gorkhaland demand supposedly being very old is false. Nepali people have flooded the hills of Darjeeling after fleeing from their homeland of Nepal ( census report in 1951 put Nepali speaking people in the three subdivisions of Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong at 20% which jumped to 60% a decade later in 1961).Nepal which is all but a basket case both economically and politically has struggled with a seven decades of complete lack of development thanks to communists Chinese meddling in their affairs .
On the other hand the Nepalese speaking people  have had stronger presence historically in Himachal Pradesh over past two hundred fifty years . https://www.facebook.com/bharatiyagorkha/posts/599302050092046 .
The logic of Nepali people asking for a separate state in India is akin to Sindhis asking for a homeland in India or Tibetans asking for same or maybe even Bhutanese also asking for same. That Nepal is a separate country with whom India has friendly relations should never be forgotten but we must also remember that we have allowed millions of Nepalese to settle inside India without any valid papers what with no questions asked open border policy being pursued even in today’s terror threatened atmosphere globally.
The mischievous role of communists : In case any of my communists friends are gloating over the BJP and Congress discomfiture , I would request them to stop their smirk. Today’s north Bengal crisis has its entire genesis in the communists basic ideology to weaken the Bengali Hindu and India in general. It was their demand to create a separate state of north Bengal in the 1950’s and ‘60s as part of the grander plan of Chinese to embolden the breaking India forces. Not many are aware of the Muslim League’s plan during partition days to include North Bengal in east Pakistan and divide India into east India and west India with east Pakistan lying in between. The design has forever been to weaken the Indian state.
In case some Nepali speaking friends believe I am being parochial let me remind them that the state of West Bengal was carved out of Bengal for Non muslim Bengalis from Pakistan and if they wish to have own state which is a legitimate demand they should fight and get their homeland by fighting to get their share of land from Nepal . Not Bengal.
Alternately the Nepali speaking people may approach Yogi Adityanath in his dual capacity of CM of UP and the Mahant of Gorakhnath temple to give them a district to call their own. The Gorakhnath temple by the way has a long history of association with Nepal. UP being a very large state it would not pose much of problem to accommodate the demand.
However, coming back to the issue of BJP’s stand on creation of new smaller states , the government of Maharashtra despite being ruled by BJP has not yet created Vidarbha which is a century old demand that is also administratively sound in logic. http://www.dailyo.in/politics/vidarbha-devendra-fadnavis-bjp-rss-maharashtra-telangana-andhra-pradesh/story/1/10405.html
Similarly in Uttar Pradesh the need for creation of four smaller states was raised by Mayawati which is not only logical but also administratively extremely sound. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Mayawatis-plan-to-divide-and-rule-Uttar-Pradesh-may-be-split-in-four-parts/articleshow/10660491.cms
However, she could not complete it during her tenure as the plan was placed at the fag end of her tenure. It remains to be seen whether BJP will complete it as it all depends on whether BJP top brass feels it will be in power in the new state or not, which is one and sole criteria for their creation of any new state as exemplified by their creation of Jharkhand, Chattisgarh and Uttarkhand. It is their mistaken notion that they will ride to power in any new state if they create another one called Gorkhaland that is making BJP national leaders salivate. Their state leaders protestations notwithstanding.
Meanwhile, the CM of Bengal Ms. Mamata Banerjee introduced a three language formula to make it compulsory to study Bangla language in the state upto class ten . After protestations in hills it was clarified the hills would be excluded. However, the first state cabinet meeting in Darjeeling chaired by her in forty four years in Darjeeling town made the Gorkha leaders very jittery. It is relevant here to note that no CM in history has so fearlessly visited the hills so many times as she has done and addressed all developmental issues with missionary zeal. Creation of state secretariat office in north Bengal to facilitate closer ties with people, ease of accessibility and better implementation of projects had already led her to a municipal victory in one of the four municipalities of the hills. This had rattled the Gorkha separatist leaders. What brought about the sudden raising of hackles is something most people don’t know about. The special audit she ordered for the Gorkha Territorial Administration which has received over Rs two thousand crores in past five years without submitting any utilization certificates. With the polls to the GTA slated for July 2017 it is clear the Gorkha leaders fear being caught red handed in thievery and loosing the elections. Hence the renewed demand for separate state  by which they hope to scare away both her and the auditors.
Unfortunately for them this time they will not be able to do anything as she is no laid back communist CM but pretty much a CEO style leader of the state who has already formed seventeen separate tribal boards for individual hill tribes who are not as well known as the Gorkhas. This was done over past 5 years.  Let us hope the BJP does not fuel the anti-Bengali fire which if they do will end any future hope of the BJP ever coming to power or win any seats in Bengal after that. The BJP leadership has to decide whether a single MP is worth fighting for or they need the rest 43 seats to Lok Sabha from Bengal. That is the final crux of the matter.
