Pokemon Card of the Day #2834: Cleffa (Neo Genesis)
Tumblr media
Before the Neo Genesis set came out, the game was filled with decks that would go through a ton of cards on the first turn, working to set up while also stripping the opponent's hand down to almost nothing. Ways to handle that were badly needed, and the new set brought this as one way to help. While modern players would not be that impressed with an attack that refreshed the hand, the mere existence of this on a Pokemon that was going to block attacks at least sometimes changed everything. It was much harder to just rip apart someone's entire gameplan by going first, and it turned out that the new decks that were mostly focused around new Stage 1 and 2 Pokemon liked being able to sit behind a Cleffa and slowly build up. This was on something that did no damage at all and had low HP, however, so Cleffa needed to be helping prepare something good.
30 HP was the lowest out there, and all sorts of attacks would KO Cleffa if they hit. The low HP also caused issues against Dark Crobat decks, which could use Pokemon Powers to ignore the need to flip when attacking a Baby Pokemon. There was no Weakness or Resistance to change anything, and being able to retreat for free was amazing in general. It also made Double Gust much easier to use and provided a Pokemon to promote safely after a KO for pivoting reasons.
Being a Baby Pokemon meant that any Pokemon trying to attack while Cleffa was Active, even if Cleffa itself wasn't a target, had to flip a coin. A tails flip prevented that attack and ended the turn. This could keep the frail Cleffa from falling, especially if a Focus Band was attached to require 2 coin flips to KO. This also could block things like another Cleffa, and games could sometimes turn on Cleffa flip luck.
Eeeeeeek was the attack that changed the entire course of the game. A single Colorless Energy let you shuffle your hand into your deck and draw 7 cards. This was amazing at the time, as recycling cards from the hand back into the deck was limited to it and Professor Elm, at least during the Rocket-On format. It also made it far easier to stop your hand from being stripped down, as any Energy was a way out. The only downside to this was the lack of damage, and the game soon involved people trying to build up rather impressive boards over a series of turns instead of quickly.
Cleffa was in every single serious deck from the time it was released to when it rotated out. Most decks would even run 3 or 4, though a few could go down to 2. Having that early-game Eeeeeeek and a way to pivot later, or even a way to block an attack in a tight spot, was a huge boost to the game. There's an argument to be made that Cleffa is the best card ever when looking at the formats it was playable in, which was no small feat. Expect every game in the Base-Neo, Rocket-On, and Neo-On formats to revolve around Cleffa to some extent.
And yes, Eeeeeeek has 7 letters because you draw 7 cards. That was officially confirmed and everything.

I'm currently making pixel art in the style of the pokemon tgc gameboy game.
Tumblr media
due to the limitations of the game boy, they can only use four colors for the images on the cards, because that's all the original game boy can display. but since the game plays on a gb and gbc, they can add color data that the gameboy color can interpret and change those four grayscale colors into 4 vibrant colors.
I definitely recommend checking out the art from the original game, and the Japan only sequel. they make incredible use of the limitations of the hardware at the time, and the artwork appears bright and vibrant on both a gbc and original gameboy. most of the artwork is based on the currently released physical pokemon cards at the time, and you can definitely see how accurate they are to the original art.
the tcg games use the card sets originally released at the time, base set to gym challenges (basically just gen 1)
I wanted to make my own versions based on real cards, so I used some cards from neo genesis series (which is basically gen 2 where they introduced dark and metal colors to represent the dark and steel types introduced in gsc)
the cards I used are holo azumarill (2/111), elekid (22/111), and furret (35/111) from neo genesis, umbreon (32/75) and wooper (71/75) from neo discovery, and celebi (3/64) from neo revolution. as you can see from the blank spaces, I'm planning to add a lot more. I'll probably look at the e-card series next.

Earlier this year I joined in on the Pok茅mon TCG collab through Artcollabfriends. Since the Neo Genesis Bellossom card has always been one of my all time favorites I just had to pick it!
For the entire collab please check out this video featuring all the cards! You can also check out the release tweet since most of the artists will quote retweet with their respective illustration.聽

This giant fire rat is what I call perfection.
Tumblr media
I pulled this Typhlosion card the same year Gold and Silver came out in Italy. I remember when my mom bought me a random pack of Neo Genesis TCG at the Upim store and I pulled this bad boi. Cyndaquil was also my starter on my copy of Gold version back then.
Typhlosion is simple but neat in design. He looks fierce but friendly as well. Also blue/orange+yellow combo is always a win factor for me.

Pokemon Card of the Day #2860: Sneasel (Neo Genesis)
Tumblr media
Sneasel was one of the most storied Pokemon in the history of the TCG. While the game, for the most part, was shifting toward evolving Pokemon to form the basis of a deck in Neo Genesis, Sneasel stuck out as the opposite. Here was a Basic Pokemon that, while luck-based, hit really hard with a full Bench to work with, and that alongside the boosts from Darkness Energy could get absurd. It wasn't hard to get a Bench filled up with all the Baby Pokemon around, either, and the only thing really holding it back was the limited amount of Darkness Energy a deck had to work with.
60 HP was not all that great, as Basic Pokemon had been reaching 70 since the start of the game. There was no Weakness to pick on here, and 60 was somewhat vulnerable but not always a KO against some decks. The Psychic Resistance could be a help against something like Mewtwo, though that type wasn't the most impressive in the Base-Neo format Sneasel was used in. Sneasel could also retreat for free, and it was common, at least outside of the pre-Slowking errata decks, to run Sneasel and Baby Pokemon to make an entire deck that could pivot whenever it wanted to and could make full use of Double Gust.
Fury Swipes was just 3 coin flips at 10 damage per heads for a Colorless Energy. This wasn't the goal, being only potential chip damage. You'd really want to sit behind a Cleffa or something instead of leaving Sneasel Active to go for that.
Beat Up was an absurd attack for its time. 2 Darkness energy got you a coin flip for each of your Pokemon in play, including Sneasel itself. 20 damage was done for each heads. A full Bench gave you an average of 60, and even a single Darkness Energy reached the 70 needed to take out things like Scyther and Rocket's Zapdos. It should be no surprise that Sneasel was all over the place right after Neo Genesis was released, as all cards back to Base Set were legal at the time. Pairing it with Slowking made it even less likely for the opponent to stop Sneasel, and Murkrow could be in the deck to trap and slowly pick off the opponent's Pokemon as well. It was way too much for the format, and Sneasel is still a top pick in modern Base-Neo due to Beat Up's power even without Slowking stopping Trainers anymore.
Sneasel was a top-tier choice in Base-Neo for good reason, as while the coin flips could fail sometimes, the majority of outcomes involved taking a big chunk out of whatever it was facing. It also set up reasonably quickly for the standards of the time, with Energy Removal being the main thing keeping it somewhat in check. It never got a chance to show off once Energy Removal rotated out, however, as it was banned out of fear of how overpowered it would be without Darkness Energy being threatened at all times. That made Sneasel the first banned card, something that was rather rare in the game's history unless you count the modern Expanded format.
