"I saw a brave girl today... She did not hesitate to defend one of her 'sisters' working Dorset Street, racing up, screaming like a madwoman, and grabbing away the cane of a brutal client...”
                          - Excerpt from the diary of Jacob Frye, March 1888
A moodboard for Nellie, another one of my favorite NPCs. I’m honestly saddened that she wasn’t developed more or had a bigger part of the DLC, because I think there’s a lot of untapped potential in her character.

A lot of people talk about how, yeah, Jacob became a dad, but the details in the Jack the Ripper DLC indicate that he was a bachelor, so...
Older Jacob who broke up with his baby mama for whatever reason, got with Nellie for a while, and then found a nice man who's like Maxwell Roth but with a moral compass, who manages to awaken a bit of the old, happy-go-lucky Jacob, which he really needs after a depressive state post-Jack death? Lydia Frye has two grandpas on that side? Eh? Eh?

dreaming up a syllabus for an imaginary course on metanarratives about gameplay, which i think would go something like:
unit 1: who do you think you are i am - auto-documentary & games
Vlogs and the Hyperreal, Folding Ideas
The Slow Death of Let's Play Videos, Meraki (to ~10:00)
World Record Progression: Mike Tyson, Summoning Salt
ROBLOX_OOF.mp3, hbomberguy
Life as a Bokoblin: A Zelda Nature Documentary, Monster Maze
optional: Braindump on the History of Let's Plays, slowbeef
unit 2: what like it's hard? - intro to challenge narratives
Chapter 26: Games as Narrative Play: Two Structures for Narrative Play, Rules of Play
A different kind of challenge run: Minimalist 100% (BOTW), Wolf Link
Surviving 100 Days on Just Dirt, Mogswamp
Can You Beat DARK SOULS III with Only Firebombs, the Backlogs
Is it Possible to Beat Super Mario 3D World while permanently crouching?, Ceave Gaming
The Pacifist Challenge - Beating Hollow Knight Without Collecting Soul [CHALLENGE] - Sample
optional: How to 100% Snowpeak Ruins in under 15 minutes, bewildebeest
unit 3: nelly you don't understand, i AM the narrative - form and function
The Future of Writing about Games, Jacob Geller
Can You Beat GRIME Without Weapons?, the Backlogs
Mushroom Kingdom Championships, Ceave Gaming
My Life as a Barber in Hitman 2, MinMax (Leo Vader)
MyHouse.WAD - Inside Doom's Most Terrifying Mod, PowerPak
optional: Mega Microvideos, Matthewmatosis
the theme and structure is mostly intended to introduce at least one critical or historically contextual work followed by examples of the type of narrative in question.
in unit 1, this is the idea of "How do people talk about their own experiences in the context of YouTube and playing video games?" across three rather different kinds of documentaries. unit 2 is intended to take that lens of who is telling what tale and dial in on challenge running, where i first noticed the way some videos turn the story of overcoming a challenge into its own narrative that is distinct from but related to the narrative events of the game itself. unit 3 circles back to the bigger picture with a variety of examples that, to me, are maximally metanarrative, the emergent story of the player-narrator now functionally replacing the game's embedded narrative.
bonus unit: broken narratives
Glitch & the Grotesque at the MLA, Sylvia Korman
Watching time loop movies to escape my time loop, Leo Vader
The Stanley Parable, Dark Souls, and Intended Play, Folding Ideas
Breaking Madden, Jon Bois
The TRUTH about the Pizzaplex in FNAF: Security Breach, AstralSpiff
this one is highly underdeveloped, but i'd love to work out something more robust building on randomizer challenges that produce intentionally bizarre, semi-ironic "lore," and bois-esque endeavors to break games so hard the story itself crumbles. but that's really out of scope so i'm just including the links to things i couldn't bear to get rid of. more rambling abt the challenge runs I chose under the cut.
Challenge runs represent one of the most obvious places to start, due to being extremely plentiful and having a hook that makes a "here's how I did X thing in Y video game" format almost unavoidable. Minimalist 100% is an underrated and sweet straightforward example that I mostly include as a baseline for reporting-out style narrative; here are the facts, here's what happened, this is the thing that it is. Mogswamp's 100 Days on Just Dirt is similar in style, but the physical measuring of days is a delightful and, more importantly, external narrative device.
Now oriented, we get a taste of Ceave Gaming's narrative approach to Mario challenges with the no-crouching run, and while we still aren't at the degree of player-characters being constructed for the narrative's sake, the spirited belief in crouching sets the stage for other rhetoric in more extreme cases we'll see later.
The Backlogs' entire body of work qualifies here, but GRIME is the strongest inspiration for putting this list together. I include the DS3 firebombs run because what was initially a factual description of how his wife's use of firebombs inspired him to play differently in the original DS1 firebombs run has developed into full-blown multi-game narrative arc with the Firebomb Goddess (his wife, who also voices the character) compelling his in-game character to achieve his destined quest. Grime takes that even further,
In-Game Documentaries
I include Life as a Bokoblin mostly as a contrast to My Life as a Barber - there is a level of fictionalization and roleplay involved in the Zelda in-game documentary that highlights exactly what I want to single out when I am talking about metanarrative, the story about a story.

I gotta say this is also very unsuprising casting when you think about it. Like as soon as the shock had worn off I was like...yeah of course she cast them.
Oh yeah, it does make sense because Emerald isn't about what's good for the project, Emerald is about what makes Emerald happy. Which is why I fundamentally can't get into her creatively.
Because of course, any creative has their aesthetic, their sensibility, their work. And I respect that, as a creative.
But you also have to kill your darlings. And we think of that in the writing sense most often—cut that sentence, that scene, that chapter if it doesn't truly serve the work. Scrap the whole thing and start over if it's truly not what it should be.
I'm a STRONG believer in that, to be fair. Brutal. Maybe too much so? Lol. Or I'd have a book out by now.
But anyway, it applies to every type of creative work, imo. You don't cast someone because YOU like them, particularly in an adaptation of a work as iconic as Wuthering Heights. You cast them because they are right for the role.
Heathcliff and Cathy, especially Heathcliff, are two of the most groundbreaking and influential characters in literature of the past 3 centuries. Heathcliff's lack of proximity (for his era) to whiteness is particularly central to the role, and I don't know anyone who seriously takes this work apart and isn't like... actively racist... who interprets Heathcliff as white. It's so crucial to his character that he is "other" in his society.
It's just TRULY a shame to me that she not only cast someone as subpar as Elordi, but someone so, so white. Like, I wouldn't want a white actor I love to play Heathcliff. And this is a fabulous role for a man of color, too.
The last adaptation did cast a man of color, but it was frankly not a very high profile project and not well done.
(I also think it would be compelling to cast a man of Roma descent OR a man of Asian, specifically South Asian descent because the text literally uses a contemporary term for Indian men to describe him... Though Nelly also speculates that he has Chinese heritage, and there are definitely some implications that he could be descended from presumably African enslaved people. The latter I could definitely see being an interpretation when you factor in the speculation that he's Mr. Earnshaw's illegitimate child. I think there's always this idea that "catch-all" terms were probably being used to describe Heathcliff's appearance, but I've thought for a while that I would personally most love to see a Roma actor or a South Asian actor play him.
But like. Literally any other than a white guy.)
This will be much more high profile, with way more attention, and it just really sucks that Emerald decided to use it to push one of her faves. It tells me that she has very little respect for the text. On what planet would anyone, even in the 1800s, look at Jacob Elordi and think that he was anything other than a white guy.
And again, I think Margot is way too old to play Cathy, and honestly doesn't read in any way as Cathy to me. I say that as someone who, again, considers her a very strong actress when she's in her element. I just. Ugh.

Emily BrontĂ« is rolling over by the way. How much more explicit can you get about a man’s non-whiteness. Literally every single time he appears Nelly goes out of her way to be like ohhh his DARK countenance his BLACK face his RACIAL OTHERNESS for the love of god did they even open the book. If they had read even just. The part where he’s introduced. They call him slurs you guys. How. How can we cast Jacob Elordi

So, I'm reading Wuthering Heights and I'm loving it. I've come across the news of a WH movie with Margot Robbie as Catherine and Jacob Elordie as Heathcliff (he is not white guys, that's a big part of the story!!) and mh... No. Just no.
So instead of studying for my upcoming exam I made a fancast (shhh don't judge me, I'm having a crisis)
Amar Chadha-Patel as HEATHCLIFF HEATHCLIFF
Tumblr media
Or
Dev Patel
Tumblr media
Katie Mcgrath as CATHERINE EARNSHAW
Tumblr media
Or Florence Pugh (? Idk)
Tumblr media
Joe Alwyn as EDGAR LINTON
Tumblr media
Morfydd Clark as ISABELLE LINTON
Tumblr media
Harry Collett as HARETON EARNSHAW
Tumblr media
Or Barney Harris
Tumblr media

There's something about the women of Newsies being constantly changed and rewritten...
Hard Promises (Original Newsies Story by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White)
Charlie and her Aunt: In the original script, "Charlie" was Jack's love interest. She was a newsgirl who lived in a brothel with her aunt (a prostitute). Her aunt was trying to protect and shield Charlie from going down that same path and at the end of the movie Charlie was to have gone with Jack to Santa Fe. [source]
Newises (1992)
Sarah Jacobs: In the film, Sarah Jacobs was the sister of David and Les as well as Jack's love interest. She is a working class woman who works crocheting dollies with her mother long before her father loses work. She ends up involved in the newsies strike and helps to print and distribute the Newsies Banner. In earlier scripts, Sarah was a self described socialist and had much more involvement in the story. It was she who confronts Jack after he scabs, dressed in David's clothes to protect herself, and demands answers. [source, Cut Material]
Medda Larkson: To replace the character of Charlie's unnamed aunt, Medda was created [source]. She's a vaudeville/burlesque performer and the owner of Irving Hall. She knows Jack (possibly a friend of his father's but who knows if that was a lie) and is sympathetic to the newsies strike, allowing them to hold their rally at her theater.
Newsies the Musical
Katherine Plumber: When Newsies was adapted for the stage, Sarah Jacobs was cut from the story along with reporter Bryan Denton and replaced with the "intrepid reporter" Katherine Plumber (Pulitzer), loosely based/inspired by Nellie Bly. She is an upper class woman, the daughter of Joseph Pulitzer, and Jack's final love interest. Like Sarah, she becomes involved in the newsies strike and it is Katherine's idea to create and print the Newsies Banner. Along with other rewrites, the inclusion of Katherine makes the story less about class struggle and more about generational struggle. [source]
Medda Larkin: While Medda's significance to the story remains largely unchanged from film to stage musical, she was reworked in the transition from Paper Mill to Broadway with Aida Overton Walker in mind as new historical inspiration [source, page 16]. A small but interesting change is that stage Medda "knows the governor." This detail is never overtly explained.
The Bowery Beauties: The additional female performers at Irving Hall or Medda's theatre. They were likely included to retain vaudeville/burlesque elements while desexualizing Medda. (My own opinion not supported by any quotes or resources that I have found.)
So my question is: Why can't these characters coexist? Why is there a quota on female characters in Newsies? Was the shift away from darker topics concerning women's safety at the turn of the 19th century to inspire and empower women today? Or was it to sweep those harsh realities under the rug?

genuinely thank you so much for your nellis sfms. this fandom has been so small for a long while now, so creators like you really are what keep everything afloat. even though you may not post frequently per se, your work is so amazing and i look forward to every single one of your posts!! i wish i could show appreciation in other ways than just liking and reblogging! guess that’s why im writing this long paragraph haha.. again, thank you so much!!! also
what are some of your headcanons for nellis, or the survivors in general? :D
T^T this brightened my day oml ty <33 The fact the fandom is so small is what got me into figuring out SFM in the first place and I appreciate all nellis creators out there helping keep this ship alive! <3 Thank you for all the love! I'm actually thinking of opening up commissions for anyone who's interested and wants to support further, but I still have to think of pricing and make the post :') Honestly I'd probably need a whole post of its own to go over my nellis head cannons so I'll stick to a some character ones I have. Nick: It's cliché but he definitely had a really shitty childhood, a single child to absent parents, drug addiction, etc. He had trust issues and pushes everyone away but he's secretly a romantic when he actually loves someone. Poor guy is just touch starved. He's also bisexual as sin. Ellis: Idk why but I always assumed Ellis's dad was abusive/ was taken away when he was young (mainly because it's the only person Ellis never mentions in game so he was either a bad part of his life or not there at all). He was raised by his mother and grandfather who got him into old rock music and cars (midnight riders and jimmy gibs) His first crush was one of keith's guy friends but he never told anyone and everyone he knows still thinks he's straight. Rochelle: She isn't super close with any of her family so the 3 other survivors mean the world to her. She lived with her boyfriend, Jacob, before the infection and is very career motivated resulting in several arguments about their future. Their rocky relationship is also why she moves her interest to Francis (another ship I have) x) Coach: He's 100% a family man. The kind to invite his friends and family over for Sunday barbecues and drinks. He falls into the father figure roll of the survivor group because of his want to be an actual father. He lost his wife to illness after 10 years together and never remarried or had children because of her inability to conceive.

Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite books; it’s a five star novel, with amazing characters and a wonderfully told story. So I was happy to learn it was going to get a movie. Now, seeing the cast, I can’t help but to be disappointed.
Jacob Elordi, really? He was the one that the cast members thought was best as Heathcliff?? The Heathcliff, described as having the same color of skin as a gyp**? “
Who knows but your father was Emperor of China, and your mother an Indian queen
” -> since when is this the way people describe a white man?
Not only that, but his race plays a “subtle”, but meaningful part in the way he’s treated by others. When he asks Nelly’s help to be better looking and he wishes for Linton’s blue eyes, then judged for trying to look better; the way that as a child, he was immediately disliked by the Linton’s, etc.
But again, I can feel that this movie is not going to be about the generational trauma and the bad choices of the characters that caused their doom, or their inability ïżŒto forgive, or of the beautiful way the next generation of Cathy and Heathcliff, a.k.a Cathy II and Hareton, become better than the ones before them by forgiving and doing better, getting to live the love and life that Cathy I and Heathcliff didn’t. It’s going to be another movie focusing on toxic relationships that will be glorified, wiping the consistency out of people’s minds, and that the audience will eat up.
If I were E.Brontë, I would be shaking madly in my grave.
