“Israel is the largest recipient of US. aid in the entire world. It receives more aid than that given to all the countries of sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, put together.

Israel receives over $10 million dollars per day from the United States, and there is evidence that the total cost to American taxpayers is closer to $15 million a day.

Yet this information is almost never printed in American newspapers.

Coverage of the Middle East in general, and of Israel in particular, virtually never reports this enormous American connection with this region.

Empowered by American money, Israel is occupying land that does not belong to it, is breaking numerous international laws and conventions of which it is a signatory, and is promulgating policies of brutality that have been condemned by the United Nations, the European Union, the National Council of Churches, Amnesty International, the International Red Cross, and numerous other international bodies. This truth is also rarely reported.

Through the money and weaponry provided by the United States, Israel is imposing an ethnically discriminatory nation on land that was previously multicultural. There is ethnic and religious discrimination inherent in its national identity, and a doctrine of the supremacy of one group over all others permeates its political, financial, and military policies. This also is virtually never reported.

American support of the Israeli government is against our national interest on every level: It places us at war with populations whose desperate plight we are helping to create, and who, quite correctly, place the responsibility for their sufferings on us.

It makes us an accomplice to war crimes and an accessory to oppression.

In analysing the American media, we are increasingly discovering a cover-up of appalling proportions. Israel is being protected, the news about Palestinians in particular and Arabs in general is being distorted, and the American public is being manipulated.

We believe strongly that if Americans knew the truth about Israel and Palestine, about the massive amount of our tax money that is being given away to Israel, and about the human costs of Israel's American-financed militarism, they would demand an immediate re-thinking of our policies in this region.

We are driving the violence in this region.

We can stop it.

HERstory! Celebrating Women's History Month

After Centuries Of Learning About History, We Now Recognize The Importance Of HERstory!

March is National Women’s History Month, which grew from a single day (March 8) in 1910: International Women’s Day. Initially set aside as a way to protest child labor and sweatshop working conditions and demand women’s suffrage, a month-long observance was established by Congress in 1987. 

National Women's History Month is now dedicated to celebrating and honoring women's accomplishments, contributions, and history. It serves as an opportunity to recognize the achievements of women in various fields, including science, politics, arts, education, business, and more.

During March, various events, programs, and initiatives nationwide honor women's achievements, raise awareness about women's history, and foster discussions about issues related to gender equality. The month provides a platform to highlight the accomplishments of women who have significantly impacted society and inspire future generations to pursue their goals and dreams.

We’ve rounded up some ways the DMV celebrates women's history and progress during Women’s History Month – and, in many cases, year-round.

NMWA advocates for better representation of women artists and serves as a center for thought leadership, community engagement, and social change. Their collections feature more than 5,500 works from the 16th century to today. 

On Friday, March 8, the NMWA celebrates International Women’s Day with virtual and in-person programs, including yoga, gallery talks, and keynote speaker Ferren Gipson, author of Women’s Work: From Feminine Arts to Feminist Art.

Although not yet a physical building, Congress signed legislation to create the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum on December 27th, 2020, making the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum a new entity. The museum’s headline program for Women’s History Month will be “Becoming Visible,” an interactive digital exhibition launching on March 8. You can learn about the founder of the American Red Cross by visiting the house where Clara Barton lived from 1897 until she died in 1912. Located in Glen Echo, Md., the structure was initially used as the American Red Cross warehouse. It was later remodeled to serve as the organization's headquarters and Clara Barton's home. It has three stories and 30 rooms, a basement that housed disaster supplies for victims of war and natural disasters, official Red Cross papers, and Barton's personal belongings. The house is located seven miles from Washington, D.C., on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River.

Renowned environmentalist and biologist Rachel Carson (1907 - 1964) spent most of her adult life in Montgomery County, Md. Week 7: A Discussion on We Feed People, A Ron Howard Documentary

We Feed People is an incredibly moving documentary from director Ron Howard and National Geographic Documentary Films about nonprofit World Central Kitchen and its founder, chef José Andrés. For those who do not already know, World Central Kitchen is a nonprofit that was founded in 2010 after the devastating earthquake in Haiti left Andrés wanting to use his culinary skills to do some good for humanity and help the people of Haiti. From there, World Central Kitchen has become a crucial food relief organization, bringing meals to victims of natural disasters and other humanitarian crises.

"You see, food relief is not just a meal that keeps hunger away. It’s a plate of hope. It tells you in your darkest hour that someone, somewhere, cares about you." -José Andrés

We Feed People asks viewers to question how they can use their skills and talents, no matter what they may be, to help others in need. Chef Andrés discovered that there tends to be a delay in feeding people who have just suffered a catastrophe and ensuring they will have food and water to survive - the film highlights in particular the 2010 Haiti earthquake, 2017 Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, the 2018 Fuego Volcano eruption in Guatemala, Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas in 2019, and the COVID-19 Pandemic. Andrés strives to do more than just provide subsistence, however. He doesn't just want people to survive, he wants them to be treated with dignity, providing them with meals that are actually comforting and filling rather than just the bare minimum to live on, and he treats them with respect for their cultures, instructing their chefs and volunteers to learn from local customs and give the people food they love.

The staff and volunteers of World Central Kitchen are followed as they prepare food, transport ingredients and materials, and navigate the rough terrains following natural disasters, looking for people who are hungry and bringing them food. Their team prepare thousands of dishes each day, and their care and labor truly shows. Ron Howard's style invites the viewer into the backseat of the cargo trucks and helicopters, letting them feel as though they are "boots on the ground" alongside Andrés and his team, seeing the joy on people's faces as they receive their meals.

This film reveals government insufficiencies and delays in response due to bureaucracy (which Andrés has no patience for, but more on that later) to natural disasters. Most people believe that the government takes immediate action when a crisis occurs, and while that is true to a certain extent, Andrés is not shy about commenting on how slow the government is in providing people with food. Much attention is given to energy and infrastructure, which is important, but no one seems to consider feeding the survivors.

We Feed People effectively shows Andrés in pleading phone calls with FEMA and The American Red Cross alongside tone-deaf footage of former-President Donald Trump in Puerto Rico in response to Hurricane Maria saying, "I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you’re throwing our budget a little out of whack!" This film provides insight into the logistics of solving a disaster and, as Andrés excels at, how simple systems can solve large problems.

Andrés used his own money, opening multiple lines of credit, with no financial support, to purchase food and supplies at the beginning. It was almost as an act of rebellion against slow-moving governmental intervention and bureaucratic red tape; he said he knew that he needed to bring food and supplies to people now and he could figure out where the money would come from later. His philosophy of "help people now, ask questions later" inspires viewers to take the leap and make themselves of service.

Prior to We Feed People being released, Andrés already had an absolutely stellar reputation for his culinary skills (he owns and operates dozens of high end restaurants), but this film highlighted his humanitarian efforts. They do not sugarcoat his personality in this film, however. In fact, you see him yell and get frustrated with staff for nearly causing chaos in giving out food in a disorganized way, swearing and getting up close in one staffer's face. Nevertheless, you feel his soul and and how hard he works (and, yes, he did sincerely apologize afterwards), and how he pushes his staff to work, to give back to others. His philosophy of building systems to feed people that the residents can then take over and continue on their own is so empowering.

Andrés emphasizes over and over again that it's not about him and his reputation, however, it's about the fact that food seems to be an afterthought in disaster relief. He doesn't want the praise; he wants people to know that there are hungry people out there who do not need to be hungry, and invites us all to help.

Director Ron Howard has had an amazing career in Hollywood. As such, it's not so much that this film gave him newfound publicity, but it did mark a new era of humanitarianism in his career. We Feed People highlights different people from all parts of the world, showing that we are all one people and that we must do our part to contribute and help others.

10/10 - I would absolutely recommend this documentary - and this organization.

On May 10th 1850 Thomas Lipton, founder of the Lipton’s grocery chain was born in Glasgow.

While his father worked in a succession of poorly paid jobs, Tommy Lipton’s siblings all died in infancy, leaving him as the family’s only son. Tommy had to leave school aged 13, because his parents needed an extra income to make ends meet. He also attended night school at the Gorbals Youth School. In 1864, Thomas signed up as a cabin boy on a steamer running between Glasgow and Belfast and seems to have been taken with crew-members’ stories about the United States, in 1865, Thomas used his savings to pay for a passage to New York, he spent the next five years there, travelling across the country. During this time he held many different jobs, including work at a tobacco plantation in Virginia; as an accountant at a rice plantation in South Carolina; as a door-to-door salesman in New Orleans; as a farmhand in New Jersey; and as a grocery assistant in New York.

Thomas returned to Glasgow in 1870. After spending some time helping his parents at their shop he established one of his own, Lipton’s Market, at 101 Stobcross Street in the Anderston area of the city. This proved highly successful and Lipton went on to establish a chain of shops, first in Glasgow and then across Scotland, before expanding to cover the whole of the UK over the next ten years. Meanwhile, the demand for tea was increasing among the middle classes and in 1888, by which time Lipton had 300 stores, he set out to bypass the traditional lines of supply for tea by investing directly in tea plantations. The Lipton Tea brand he established offered good quality for low prices and proved hugely popular, expanding the market for tea to all parts of society and establishing it as the national drink of choice.

Lipton was a big fan of promotional stunts. When his first 20,000 tea chests arrived in Glasgow he put on a party, complete with a brass band and bagpipe parade. In 1893 Sir Thomas Lipton officially established the Thomas J Lipton Company, a tea packaging company based in Hoboken, New Jersey . He felt that tea should be a drink for everyone, not just the wealthy , so he strived to make packaging and shipping less expensive.

Instead of arriving in crates, Sir Thomas packaged his loose tea in multiple weight options. The tea was also standardised, so Lipton customers knew exactly what to expect.

Lipton developed a passion for yachting, between 1899 and 1930 Lipton challenged the American holders of the America’s Cup through the Royal Ulster Yacht Club five times with yachts he named Shamrock through Shamrock V. He never won the cup, but he was awarded a special trophy as “the best of all losers”. This may sound double-edged, but one effect of his efforts to win the cup was to make his name well known across the United States, and his tea very popular there.

Although Lipton, through his yachting, became a friend of royalty, as a self-made man he still had difficulty breaking into some corners of the highly stratified British society of the day. He was, for example, only accepted as a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron shortly before his death.

As well as boats, Lipton will also be remembered for his love of football, and The Thomas Lipton Trophy, This was an association football competition that took place twice, in Turin, Italy, in 1909 and 1911. It is regarded by some as The First World Cup, or certainly a precursor to it,  I’m sorry  to have to tell you the winners in 2009 were from England, West Auckland Town Football Club from County Durham also defended and won the trophy in 1911, the last pic is the trophy.

During the first world war Lipton  Respondied to a national call to action putting his yachts at the disposal of the Red Cross, the Scottish Women’s Hospitals Committee and the Serbian Relief Fund, for transporting medical volunteers, doctors, nurses and urgently needed medical supplies.

Lipton died at his home in north London in 1931. He left most of his wealth to his native city of Glasgow. His yachting trophies are now on display at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Sir Thomas Lipton was buried alongside his parents and siblings in Glasgow’s Southern Necropolis.

Liptons continues today as part of the multinational Unilever brands, they teas and other beverages still bear his name and are a world known brand, not bad for a young lad born in a Glasgow Tenement to Irish immigrants. 

Lipton never forgot where he came from and was famed for his philanthropy, today he is still remembered with The Sir Thomas Lipton Foundation a registered charity who “ care deeply about propelling 10 to 12 year old children – at school in areas of acute social and economic disadvantage - into their critical teenage years with an unforgettable experience of sailing, enterprise and achievement.”

Unmarried and without heirs, his fortune was distributed among friends, servants and to establish dedicated foundations, but the majority of his estate was left in trust to Glasgow, his beloved city of birth. By 1946, all funds had been distributed; the Lipton trust had bestowed £821,000 to various good causes.

International Women’s Day: Actresses Who Became Activists By Raquel Stecher

International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8th and recognized by the United Nations, raises awareness for women’s rights and celebrates the achievements of women across the globe. Utilizing their fame as a platform to do good, actresses from the golden age of Hollywood and beyond have supported a variety of philanthropic causes. Myrna Loy worked on behalf of UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Ida Lupino made NEVER FEAR (’50) to raise awareness about polio. Ruby Dee fought for civil rights. Rita Moreno continues to champion the Latinx community. Martha Raye entertained the troops during three separate wars. Debbie Reynolds was a mental health and AIDS advocate. Tippi Hedren empowered Vietnamese women to become business owners. And, Shirley Temple raised awareness about breast cancer. There are many, many examples of actresses devoting their time, energy and, in many cases, finances for humanitarian, environmental and political causes. Let’s take a look at some of the notable actresses who became activists.

Doris Day

In 1937, Doris Day’s coonhound Tiny was hit by a car and killed. The guilt Day felt for Tiny’s untimely demise would fuel her activism on behalf of animals. Day transitioned from acting in the 1970s to become an animal welfare advocate. She co-founded the non-profit organization Actors and Others for Animals in 1971. In 1978, she started the Doris Day Pet Foundation (later renamed the Doris Day Animal Foundation). This organization advocates for the humane treatment of animals. By the late 1980s, she would allow only a handful of interviews with the sole intention of publicizing her charitable efforts. She even called up President Ronald Reagan, her costar in THE WINNING TEAM (’52), to discuss animal rights legislation. In 1987, she started The Doris Day Animal League, which eventually merged with The Humane Society of the United Sates, and established World Spay Day. In 2011, she started the Doris Day Horse Rescue and Adoption Center, and Day recorded the album “My Heart,” the proceeds of which went to her non-profit. Day was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush in 2004 for her work.

Jane Fonda

Outspoken political activist Jane Fonda has championed many causes over the years. She was a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War, which landed her in some hot water. In 1970, while Fonda was organizing and fundraising a protest with Vietnam War veterans, she was arrested for possession of drugs. The drugs were in fact vitamins and she was eventually cleared of all charges. In a moment of defiance, she held up a fist for her now iconic mugshot. Two years later, Fonda would travel to Vietnam and a photo of her sitting on an anti-aircraft gun in Hanoi would stir up controversy. She was labeled “Hanoi Jane,” a moniker that is still negatively used against her to this day. While she regretted her actions, she did not let this prevent her from continuing her political activism. She’s been a champion for civil rights, feminist causes and has lent her support to Native Americans. In recent years, she’s taken on several environmental causes including protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline and Arctic drilling. As of the publication of this article, Fonda has been arrested five times for her climate change demonstrations (Fire Drill Fridays) in Washington D.C.

Audrey Hepburn

During her childhood, Audrey Hepburn suffered the effects of living through WWII and the Dutch famine of 1944-1945, which would have long lasting effects on her health. In 1946, early ambassadors from the newly created organization UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) offered her assistance. She never forgot their kindness and her own personal experience led to her to become a champion for children in need. Hepburn began working with UNICEF in 1954 and started traveling on field missions in 1988. The following year she was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the organization. She traveled to Turkey, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Venezuela, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and elsewhere, assisting with medical treatments, nutrition projects and working directly with children and their mothers. Her last trip was to Somalia in 1992, four months before she died. In 1993, she was posthumously awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Academy Award.

Helen Hayes

Actress Helen Hayes was best known for her theatrical productions, but when her severe asthma put an end to her stage career (the dust on stage proved to be too much), she transitioned to television and film. Hayes used her fame to help raise funds for asthma research. She also donated to the arts, including the Riverside Shakespeare company. She was on the board of her directors for the New York Chapter of the Girl Scouts in the 1970s. Besides being an EGOT (an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony-winning performer), her greatest claim to fame should be her work with the New York State Rehabilitation and Research Hospital which helps rehabilitate patients with disabilities. Hayes first became involved with the hospital in the 1940s. Throughout the years, she donated, fundraised and hosted events at her mansion, the “Pretty Penny,” and offered support in any way she could. She lobbied for funding to renovate the hospital, a project that cost over $37 million dollars. She served as a member of the board from 1944 until her death in 1993. The hospital was renamed The Helen Hayes Hospital in 1974 and is still going strong today.

Lena Horne

Lena Horne’s activism began at a very young age. In 1919, at the age of two, she appeared on the cover of the NAACP journal The Crisis. Influenced by her grandmother Cora Calhoun Horne, a suffragist and activist who was a political ally of W.E.B. Du Bois, as well as her activist father, Horne championed civil rights before the movement ever began. She joined the NAACP while she was still a high school student. She also leant her support to the Urban League, the Progressive Citizens of America and the SNCC. During WWII, Horne supported the war effort by entertaining black troops. She filed a complaint through the NAACP when she saw that black service members had to sit behind German POWs during her performances at Fort Reilly. When MGM removed her from the tour, she self-financed her trips and continued her efforts. During WWII, she also spoke up on behalf of the mistreatment of Japanese Americans. Horne campaigned for anti-lynching legislation with Eleanor Roosevelt, although that ultimately failed. During the Civil Rights Movement, Horne performed at rallies and was in the March on Washington in 1963. In 1983, the NAACP awarded her the Spingarn Medal for being an “artist humanitarian and living symbol of excellence. Her humanitarian efforts live on and the annual Lena Horne Prize, awarded by Town Hall, honors artists for their social impact.

Marsha Hunt

The name Marsha Hunt should become synonymous with activism. Hunt has been indefatigable in her humanitarian efforts. Influenced by her progressive mother, she became a liberated woman with strong political beliefs. Those beliefs would come under scrutiny during the McCarthy Era witch hunt. She joined the Committee for the First Amendment, a group of Hollywood actors and writers who supported the Hollywood Ten. She was ultimately blacklisted. Over the years, she became an advocate for UNICEF, The March of Dimes, The Red Cross and the United Nations. She was named an Ambassador for Peace in 2007. Hunt has championed many humanitarian causes including homelessness, mental health, world peace, the environment and the plight of refugees. She is a founder of the San Fernando Valley Mayor’s Fund for the Homeless. Hunt helped raise money to buy a motel that was renovated into a homeless shelter for women and children. She supported the shelter throughout the years by donating supplies and helping with the upkeep. Hunt has also been a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ community. Back in the 1970s, she wrote a song about same-sex relationships called “Here’s to All Love,” and it was performed by Glee star Bill A. Jones in 2013. A documentary about her life, career and humanitarian efforts MARSHA HUNT’S SWEET ADVERSITY was released in 2015.

Mary Pickford

Actress, producer, writer and business woman, Mary Pickford was an enterprising woman and instrumental in the formative years of the film industry. In 1921, she conceived of the idea for the Motion Picture Relief Fund, an organization intended to help other members of the film industry who had fallen on hard times. She used the remaining funds from her work selling Liberty Bonds during WWI to help finance the project. Pickford became one of the founding members of what is now called the Motion Picture Television Fund. She also served as the organization’s first vice president. She oversaw various initiatives including the Playroll Pledge Program, which encouraged industry members to donate 0.5% of their paycheck to the fund. She helped raise money to buy walnut and orange groves in Woodland Hills, which would become the home for the fund and its hospital. Pickford was on the board for many years and attended every fundraising event she could. In addition to the MPTF, she established the Mary Pickford Foundation in the 1950s. The foundation focuses on preserving films in partnerships with film archives.

Rosalind Russell

Ever since Rosalind Russell portrayed Sister Elizabeth Kenny, an Australian nurse who took great strides to help children suffering from polio in the film SISTER KENNY (’46), Russell became a tireless advocate for various health causes. Russell, who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, served on the National Commission on Arthritis and Related Musculoskeletal Diseases starting in the 1970s. The Rosalind Russell Medical Research Center for Arthritis University of California San Francisco was named in her honor. She was a founding member of the United Service Organizations (USO) and the League for Crippled Children. She was a chairman and advocate for The Lighthouse for the Blind, Catholic Charities of New York, The National Arthritis Foundation, Children Services of Connecticut and the MPTF. Russell lent her efforts to senior care centers and in assisting tornado victims. For her numerous philanthropic pursuits, she received a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Academy Award in 1973.

Elizabeth Taylor

When her good friend and co-star in GIANT (’56), Rock Hudson, died from complications of AIDS, Elizabeth Taylor was devastated. Fueled by the tragedy, she became a tireless advocate for those suffering from HIV/AIDS. She helped raise awareness, fund research and combat ignorance in a time when AIDS was still highly misunderstood. She testified before the House and the Senate for the Ryan White Care Act and helped convince President Ronal Reagan to publicly acknowledge the disease. She also founded the Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center at the Whitman-Walker Clinic in D.C. which offered free HIV/AIDS testing. In 1985, she chaired the AIDS Project Los Angeles’ Commitment to Life fundraising project and co-founded the American Foundation for AIDS Research. The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, established in 1991, provides financial and moral support to patients suffering from AIDS. She shifted her focus from acting to her humanitarian efforts and raised millions of dollars for different foundations. After her death in 2011, her estate keeps funding her foundation. Taylor was awarded a Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Academy Award in 1993.
