In my mind, you can pair red flags in two ways, 1. Pair two red flags or 2. Pair red flag with someone who won't let them be a red flag anymore. Which is not "I can fix them with love" but more, "I won't let them get away with that if they want to be with me"

Moon in the Day, Alchemy of Souls, The Atypical Family, & The Double all pair red flags with other red flags. Who cares if one side of the pairing is murderous, they're both murderous! They'll do murder things together as a couple. Awwww, so cute. (not everyone on this list is a murderer but you get it)

Then you have one-sided red flag but the other side can handle it, which includes Doom at Your Service, It's Okay to Not Be Okay, The Forbidden Marriage, and What's Wrong with Secretary Kim. Most of these relationships have intense outbursts of jealousy, to which the other partner is like, "No, I don't like that stop it," and then the other side stops. Maybe not an ideal relationship, but I don't feel worried as a viewer.

You could argue that Alchemy of Souls falls into the latter category as well, Jang Uk isn't that much of a red flag but Naksu definitely is one, but he can handle that and he does very much understand the risks of hanging out with her.

I mean it's fiction, but if I'm watching someone really unhinged in a relationship, I want to feel like there is a good balance at least.

Edit: if it's a tragedy, then the pairings can be unbalanced and fall into The Horrors, but what I don't like it Red paired with Green and then pretending it would turn out fine. Nope.

I'd told you that I'd tell you if I remembered another.

So I had completely forgotten about this, even though at that time I'd been so angry at the translators. Okay so I was watching this old AoS edit, and I came across the scene in it.

So remember that time when Gilju tried to shift souls with Jang Uk. Obviously, he failed (courtesy of Jin Bu Yeon), but Mu Deok didn't know that. So she tries to wake Jang Uk in Gilju's body and when Jang Uk wakes up in his own body she tries to kill him thinking that it's Gilju.

So MuDeok's lines go:

"I may have been too weak to protect him from you," (And till here it's okay)

but I'll make sure to end your life." (See. This. This right here. This is WRONG. I don't like this.)

What Mudeok actually says is: "I won't let you remain alive in that body."

Which is what actually makes sense, don't you think?

Mudeok/Naksu wanting to kill anybody or telling someone she's going to kill them is really not something very surprising or grand. We all know how Naksu is, this doesn't require an explanation.

The grand thing here is not that she tells Gilju she's going to kill him. It's that she says that because he's in Jang Uk's body. Because she won't let Gilju be alive in Jang Uk's body.

Here she was, a soul shifter, in someone else's body, and to her knowledge the body owner's soul had been destroyed, and she had no qualms about it. She didn't think Alchemy of Souls to be wrong. At that time, she simply didn't want to run wild, and she wanted back her power.

Yet here she was telling another soul shifter, one who'd soul shifted with Jang Uk to get the exact same things that she wanted, that she was going to kill him. Killing Gilju at that moment was completely at odds with MuDeok's situation. Also in the literal sense because he was a well trained mage now in a tall, strong, healthy body who could easily overpower her. And yet she tells him that she's going to kill him.

But she's not going to kill him because he's a soul shifter or because he's a bad guy or because she thinks Alchemy of Souls or sorcery is wrong. She's going to kill him only because the person Gilju chose to shift souls with was her pupil.

"I may have been too weak to protect him from you, but I'll not let you remain alive in that body."

And Jang Uk knows all of these things, which is why he's taken aback.

"I didn't know you cared about Jang Uk that much."

Alchemy of Souls: Seo Yul and Prince Go Won

Seo Yul went on to become the head of Jeongjingak. So he trains mages now, but this poor guy has neither Naksu nor So-yi.

His ancestor, master Seo Gyeong, and Jin Seol-ran's ill-fated love story continued with him because Jin Bu-yeon is her and Naksu is her.

Give the guy an epic adventure as he trains mages and lives a solitary but fulfilled life, or give him someone who'll train mages alongside him. Maybe another long-lost Jin family member or something? Give the Seo and Jin tragedy a better ending. Such a stretch, yes. 😂

What about Crown Prince Go Won? No Mu-deok nor Jin Bu-yeon for him either. I thought Lady Seo would have been nice, but they're relatives lol. Just give the guy a better queen than his mother was or something.

Edit (Jan 2025):

An AU idea came to mind while rewatching this show again. 💡

What if the ill-fated Seo (Gyeong) and Jin (Seol-ran) love story continues indeed through Seo Yul and another Jinyowon priestess? 🤔 But who would it be? Perhaps a cousin or a relative of the Jin sisters, like Jin Mu's long-lost daughter who's out to avenge her dad?

For Prince Go Won, perhaps a princess from another kingdom that could become potentially an enemy or an ally. What about another Jinyowon priestess? By doing that, all "four men that are from the Daeho Fortress that all the women want to marry" (the Crown Prince, Park Dang-gu, Seo Yul, and Jang Uk) from powerful families would have married into the Jin family. Although technically, it's Naksu via Jin Bu-yeon. Part 2 ended with Bu-yeon supposedly helping out with the queen-to-be selection process.

But what if Naksu gets exposed finally? Technically, she is from a once distinguished family too (as Cho Yeong), but I wonder how the people will react to that. The mages were gossiping about Uk being the late king's son through the alchemy of souls so that seems to have been accepted by the general populace.

How about the mage family leaders who died when they tried to wake the firebird? Sure, they were bad guys, but there can possibly be conflicting opinions on that.

Lastly, I'm also curious about Yul's general dad. He was never shown in the story, but Seoho Fortress sounds as equally intriguing as Daeho. Uk was also appointed as the North Fortress general, so I imagine that the kingdom is larger with possibly four fortresses in all directions (north, south, east, and west) with Daeho situated in the middle for optimal protection. Seoho was described to be far, so it can possibly be in the opposite direction of the North fortress, the south.

I imagine it to be similar to the image below, but the four fortresses should be very far from the center and will require days of travel.

The drama was magical with the top-tier cinematography and the actors and actresses that delivered their roles so well. Each episode got me hooked and I for real was losing my sanity at the time it was airing because of the sequenced plot twists. However, I wasn't satisfied with how this season ended. I expected more, I guess? Maybe a happy ending that was impossible to deliver? Anyhow, I think the plot at the end kind of just got dragged. It seems like they've shifted their focus more on the production of season 2 rather than season 1. Still, it's a great watch. The chemistry of the leads was oozing and I would definitely rewatch this again, though I might cry a river, considering its heart-wrenching ending.

AOS: SEASON 2

Synopsis: Jang-uk returns from death, and three years later, the story of the mages unfolds anew. Jang-uk becomes a hunter of the soul shifter when a young woman, a prisoner in her own home seeks his help to reclaim her freedom.

THIS IS IT! Personally, everything that was lacking in season 1, they have here. The changing of the female lead was so complicated at first, however, it was such a great twist that they've managed to incorporate! In this season, everything in the storyline was well-written and exceptional. From this season, everything was made clear and refreshing. Considering Naksu's traumatic past, I was glad that she somehow temporarily got to forget her past and has had to enjoy the sweetness of life (even though, not necessarily since she was mostly locked up). Having a look at the drama's reviews, the majority of the viewers were flabbergasted by the change of the female lead. However, for me it's thrilling and epic. I just love how the fierce and dominant Naksu suddenly switched to the cute and charming Jin Bu-yeon. In terms of romance, just like season 1, this did not disappoint! The overflowing dose of chemistry from the casts still got me giggling tightly hugging my plushies.

Overall, both seasons were phenomenal masterpieces that deserve recognition!

cara eu me sinto muito mal que alquimia das almas é um drama que não me ajuda a gostar dele.

o casal principal é muito legal mas eu fico shippando eles com diversas outras pessoas, pq eu não sei kkkk mas eu só não consigo amar eles juntos 😭 a naksu é uma maga extremamente forte e ela é tão burrinha e inocente às vezes como mu deok, a forma como ela age me faz pensar que não nerfaram só os poderes como afastaram a inteligência e sagacidade que uma assassina no nível devia no mínimo ter. ao invés deles colocarem momentos significativos do uk e da mu deok preferiram fazer "edits" de cenas dos dois juntos, como se fosse para lembrar os expectadores que eles tem um relacionamento especial e isso acaba com a sutileza que o casal podia ter. não sei se tô muito amargurada para doramas ultimamente ou se romance bobo e grudento realmente não é meu forte, mas eu odeio como eles ignoram qualquer pessoa pq eles se "preferem" mas tipo a naksu ter toda aquela história com o seo yul NÃO SIGNIFICA NADA PRA ELA? como a mu deok consegue ser tão fria com ele, mesmo ele aparentemente tendo sido "especial" pra ela? fora que o uk me irrita sendo aquele típico egoísta que só se preocupa com uma pessoa e ele responde todo mundo de uma forma mal educada que me faz pensar: pq ele é assim? 😭 e assim eu nem reclamo que a mu deok é aquela que todos os homens, até o príncipe herdeiro, do nada se apaixonam, pq afinal ela é a protagonista mesmo. porém, que inovador, né? os casais secundários dão sono! eles querem adicionar romance em tudo, sem colocar uma progressão na história. os vilões são super lentos e não tomam ações. todo mundo julga cada mínima ação do uk que se qualquer outra pessoa fizesse passaria batido. ugh. Also more than half of this list is about teen me readings, I really need to seek out books and Manga bc wow. Very teen me, and I think that I've outgrown their canons even if the ship dynamic is also that still compels me.

I like:

CANON

El/Orion from the Scholomance. Whenever Orion gets a bit of focus I'm just. Oh wow (if you read between the lines he's so simple and so fucking unhinged at the same time). El extremely denying any vibes until last moment, but also falling extremely hard. Them both being such a battle couple/pair in general.

Whatever you can call what Agatha has going on with her two beaus in Girl Genius. They're all three of them so crazy competent and gone for each other too.

Yona/Hak and her vibes with Soo-won too (that foils thing she has with him is perfect and usually handled to male charas only, I'm biting my arm) (the loyalty thing with Hak and the way he pulls her higher too) (just the frustrated ot3 vibes of it all).

Jang Uk and Naksu|Cho Yeong in season 1. Their devoted and unhinged vibes destroyed me, I loved them. They were perfect, they only needed a bit more physicality. Season 2 defanged Yeong way way too much (in favor of uwu and blegh, let the woman cut off heads) and I didn't like the postponed angst and romance without knowing her identity.

Iron Widow OT3, which look. Wu Zetian rules even when she misses and nukes a city and everything is fantastically creepy and the guys lovely developed charas too with very different personalities and backstories

Tana and Gavriel from the Coldest Girl in Coldtown. (and this one also has threesome vibes with Aiden, uh) I like it when she is driven to do whatever it needs doing be it save her ex or her sister, or killing an ancient vampire in the company of another midly crazed vamp who is also very devoted to her and rediscovering life. Also the whole aesthetic and vibes of this one fucks.

Kate and August in Monsters of Verity duology. Dark dystopic urban fantasy and monster/human plus tragedy plus narrativelt active morally complex fem protags? I was obssesed with it when it came out.

Kaguya and Shirogane, but specifically if they weren't so innocent. Their chemistry is super fun, but I want something a bit more grown up and less teen panic. See also, me at 11 being obssesed with Blair/Chuck vibes in season 1 and 2 of Gossip Girl.

I'm on a roll. I loved Gilbert/Anne both in the 80's series and in Anne with an e. Obvious rivals to lovers where the guy respects her intelligence and she also has to have a whole arc about herself before realising she likes him.

I remember being bewitched by Lyra and Will once upon a time when I read the Golden Compass trilogy. Same re:Nathaniel and Kitty from Bartimaeus despite these two never having comfirmed anything just tragic unfulfilled potential.

Bipa and Aer from La Emperatriz de los Etéreos de Laura Gallego; theyre my fave pairing of hers and one of the only ones I didn't grew distant from as I grew out of her books. She's so practical and also kind and warm hearted, and he has the head on the clouds and is also completely out of this world in a familiar way. (this is me identitying with the guy who only appears like. A quarter of the whole novel bc he has been trying to give himself over to a lovecraftian alien soul-eater blue star while Bipa has to do all the journey to bring him back and destroy said blue star). Laura Gallego is wild.

NOT CANON

Younger me also enjoyed Artemis/Holly, not sorry at all for that one. He's so gone for her as a person and she's so out of his league (bc of their ages, bc of their species, their incompatible moralities up to the last books, etc, etc). Unfulfilled longing that makes you want to be a better person, the ship.

Soul/Maka on the other hand have super married vibes despite nothing ever being official and I love them and want to set on fire all the fic there's is about them bc it's general romcom / modern setting without that battle partnership and soul trust + domesticity I love. Also extremely teen but alas.

Yatori from Noragami bc I love tragedy specifically and human/gods relationships are fascinating. Even if it's unfinished. Even if it's out of focus somewhat.

Bellamy/Clarke from the 100 for all of the three seasons I saw before abandoning the series. The plot was unsmokeable but their relationship perfectly done. I was resigned to a boring romance with Finn and bam. Complex relationships, Clarke being bi with Lexa, parallel leaderships arcs, etc. Oh wow.

When someone bothers to write Aredhel/Celegorm on her PoV and it hits incredibly HARD. Damn. Whether aroallo or full-romo. Let post rebirth Aredhel be wild and Celegorm reckon with the knowledge of what wrong he almost brought to Luthien given Aredhel. Aredhel loving Lomion despite everything and loving disaster Celegorm, but not forgetting what they did, the awkward bonding between Maeglin and Celegorm as two former bad guys. Or them avoiding a bad ending and dying together fighting on the First Age before the Second Kinslaying. Playful times in Valinor pre-darkening.

ESPECIAL MENTION

I loved Laini Taylor characters and worldbuilding but her love at first sight kind of romances left me cool which is sad given I liked like everything else about her stories. Including the two characters involved on the romances, but not the romances per se. I guess I'm too aroace to believe first sight as anything reasonable in a serious plot even with the fairy tale vibes her stories have lol.

I also love Reylo vibes and symbolism but hated what they did on the last movie with them and I'm weirdly unable to read much fic of them. So...
