This FST is basically an in-depth run down of the collection of songs that were sung/mentioned/in the "VOL. 7/BOX" chapter of Tokyo Babylon 5, with some info about the artists and songs themselves. This, as far as I know, is the most thorough run-through of the music of "BOX" on the English web! Ginza no Koi no Monogatari

銀座の恋の物語 - "Ginza Love Story" 石原裕次郎・牧村旬子 - Ishihara Yuujirou and Makimura Junko mp3 download || youtube

The song that Seishirou and Hokuto are pouring their very souls into to perform in the beginning of the chapter. Released in 1961, this a smoky, jazzy duet typical of its time, telling the story of two star-crossed lovers, one in Tokyo and one in Ginza. It was an immediate hit, even having a movie based upon it made, starring Ishihara-san in the lead role. It's a staple duet in karaoke even to this day.

泣かないで - "Don't Cry" 舘ひろし - Tachi Hiroshi mp3 download || youtube

The song that the random selector spits up for Subaru to sing, which Sei-chan subsequently picks up after sending him off to buy cigarettes/exorcise the OL. This was released in 1984, by Tachi Hiroshi, a singer and actor who became quite the sensation when he had a starring role in 西部警察 (Seibu Keisatsu; "Western Police") -- incidentally, directed by the abovementioned Ishihara-san, as you'd have it. "Nakanaide" was a hit, coming in 59th on the ORICON's 1984 top singles list. It's from his seventh album In the Mood.

The song that the OL ghost sings. A dark and heartfelt song about a dying love, it was a massive hit when it was released in 1987, shooting straight to the top of the ORICON charts (as Nakamori-san's 17th number one hit), and has been a karaoke regular since then, just as the OL says in the chapter. Originally written and performed by the very respected Kato Tokiko for her 最後のダンスパーティ (Saigo no Dance Party; "Last Dance Party") album of 1984; she personally requested that Nakamori-san perform the song. It's been covered countless times, including by the original singer/songwriter and the cover artist themselves.

抱いて… - "Hold Me..." 松田聖子 - Matsuda Seiko mp3 download || youtube

Not actually sung, but the OL ghost suggests she'd like to sing it next. A dramatic and emotional slice of idol pop from the Eternal Idol herself, Matsuda Seiko (who also performs "Who's That Boy", found on Single White). Released in 1987 as a promo-only single from her fifteenth studio album, 1988's Citron. Despite never being released as an official single, it's one of Matsuda's more popular songs, especially karaoke-wise. It's rather interesting that the OL picks a Matsuda song directly after a Nakamori Akina track -- the pair were notorious rivals in the 80s, supposedly even in love.

勉强の歌 - "Study Song" 森高千里 - Moritaka Chisato mp3 download || youtube

The song Hokuto is singing when Subaru attempts to sneak back into the karaoke box. Released in 1991, it peaked at #4 on the ORICON charts, and was remixed on Moritaka's second remix album as ザ・勉強の歌 (Za・Benkyo no Uta; "The・Study Song"). It was used as the opening theme to the anime TV series "Mischievous Twins: The Tales of St. Clare's". It's a totally gimmicky song (complete with voguing in the very weird video clip), though cheerful and catchy, so its popularity on the karaoke circuit at the time shouldn't surprise anyone. (You just know that Hokuto unironically adored this song, and drove Subaru batty by singing it at every opportunity.)

The song that Hokuto announces Subaru should sing with Seishirou as punishment for being late. Another staple in the duets section of karaoke, still, this 1979 release was actually a cover. The song was released by two Toshiba EMI artists, Matsudaira Kemeko and the Purple Shadows, respectively, in 1969. In October 1975, Los Indios released a single-voice version, and in 1979 it was rearranged as a male and female duet, with some lyrics changed slightly. The song was an instant hit, and by 1980, it had sold a million copies.

And what of my adaptational bitterness?!

Not long ago, I decided to look at some of my favorite FE15 scenes with Japanese voice acting, given how fantastic the English dub is-- and something I picked up in the process is that the scene between Alm and Mycen in Rigel Castle has a couple of interesting changes that I wanted to lay out! Particularly with its most... iconic lines. Major spoilers ahead!

(Note: I'm not a native Japanese speaker, and I'm not entirely fluent, but I took two years of college classes and damn if I'm not putting that all to use here!!)

While I put together a document going through the whole conversation in Japanese and loosely translating it, most of it is generally the same, aside from two bits. You're also not going to get the whole picture just by reading the lines, as the voice acting does a great deal for both sides of this conversation, so I highly recommend you pull up the scene in video form as well.

Now, the first change is pretty brief! Specifically, when Mycen brings up Alm's birth during his whole spiel about how the gods are deteriorating.

Mycen: しかし、そこにアルム。お前が生まれた。(Shikashi, soko ni Arumu. Omae ga umareta.) But then there's you, Alm. You were born. But then you were born, Alm.

Alm: ！！ (*gasp*) ...! What does that have to do with any of this?

The second, more important one, is Alm's reaction to being Rudolf's mercy, and how Mycen responds to that. The exchange goes like this:

Mycen: それが愛するわが子であればこれ以上の喜びはない…… (Sore ga aisuru waga ko de areba koreijou no yorokobi wa nai…) So for it to be his beloved child, he could feel no greater joy… So for that death to come at the hand of his beloved son was… a mercy.

Mycen: ルドルフは、そう言っておった。(Rudorufu wa, sou itte otta.) Rudolf told me so himself. He told me himself that he could imagine no more peaceful end.

Alm: そんな…… 父さん、父さんっ……！！(Sonna… Tou-san, Tou-san…!!) That's... Father, father...!! And what of my peace?!

"Sonna..." on its own is a pain to translate, but the specific meaning isn't as relevant as how Natsuki Hanae says this line. Rather than reacting with even more bitterness because Rudolf's convoluted plan made no room for Alm's own say on the matter - him yelling at Mycen earlier for sending him to kill his own father is about the same already - JP Alm just... breaks down and cries for his father, essentially. And it's this difference in reaction that makes Mycen respond in turn!

Mycen: 泣くな、アルムよ。(Naku na, Arumu yo.) Don't cry, Alm. This is not the time for mourning or self-pity, boy.

Compared to something like "nakanaide" (please don't cry), "naku na" is more direct in just. You know. Telling someone not to cry instead of asking them. So perhaps there's a weight behind those words that I'm missing, but with his quieter and more even tone of voice, and the way he addresses Alm by name, it comes off as a lot gentler than how he scolds Alm in the localization.

Now, why were these changes made? Are they better or worse? I don't know! Sure, I'd like Mycen not to be kind of a dick to his grandson while he's feeling so vulnerable, but I can tolerate it because that's how I first experienced the scene, and their supports say a great deal more about how they feel about each other than a scene where they're both freshly grieving. More than that, though, I think Alm breaking down and sobbing and Alm sticking it to the man both get to something very important about his position here, something that Natsuki Hanae and Kyle McCarley also portray amazingly:

Venti asked the group excitedly with his usual bright smile.

Venti and his group (the anemo boys) were sitting in their usual spot in the cafeteria having lunch as Venti showed them a song he had written for the upcoming music competition.

"It's pretty good," Heizou said approvingly.

"Are you gonna write lyrics for it?" kazuha asks.

"Yup! I'm already working on it!" Venti exclaims

"Have you ever thought about doing a duet with someone?" wanderer asks lazily not looking at the group as he just clicks away on his phone.

"A duet?" venti tilted his head.

"He's right, I think if you were to duet with someone, your performance would be better," Xiao said. "besides, I feel like your song is missing something, so a duet is a good idea" he added

"Well, you're right about that..." Venti mutters thoughtfully, the group is quiet for a while then Venti snaps his fingers with a bright smile on his face "All right then, it's settled, I'll find someone to duet with me!" he declares with his usual cheerful voice.

*riinggggg*

The bell rang signaling that lunch breaks were over and that it was time for classes. The group packed their stuff and one by one, they left the cafeteria to head to their respective classes. Kazuha and Venti walked together since they had the same class. Kazuha decided to ask him "Do you have anyone in mind yet?"

Venti thought for a bit before answering "Nope! Not yet, I'm sure I'll find someone though." he smiled. venti spent the past few days trying to find someone who could be able to duet with him but no hope. He was starting to consider if he could just sing himself.

Venti was on his way home from school. He was deep in thought about what he should do about the competition when he suddenly realized. 'Wait, where's my guitar?'

He accidentally left it at school and he scolded himself for being so forgetful. He turned around and started sprinting back, he was lucky he wasn't too far away yet.

When he arrived, the school was pretty quiet, there were only a few students inside because of their clubs so the school was pretty peaceful.

he walked along the hallways until he got to their classroom and saw his guitar on his desk. He sighed in relief that it was still there. He picked it up and left the classroom but as he was going to walk away.

He heard a faint sound of a melody which he found weird since the music club was on the other side of the school. A melody so enchanting, it caught his ear and he felt drawn to it and as if his body moved on its own, he was walking towards the sound.

The melody slowly got louder with every step he took, it led to a spare room where different kinds of equipment were. He took a small peek in the door and there he saw an oddly familiar girl. She sat in the middle of the room playing a piano that looked a bit old and dusty.

He could see that peaceful expression on her face as she pressed each key, her figure was reflected by the warm afternoon light making her look as if she was glowing. He heard each note she played as she opened her mouth to sing.

Her voice was like a gentle breeze, It was a sound that made his heart sing, He was enchanted by the sound of her singing, a sweet serenade. Her voice was like a work of art, a thing of beauty. Her heart poured out to every note and chord.

He watched how her fingers danced across the keys with grace, the music swirling around her like a gentle embrace.

He shook his head and slowly stepped away, he didn't want to invade on whatever she was doing so he left.

while walking home, his mind kept on wandering about the girl and why her features seemed familiar. Even when he lay on his bed, his mind continued to drift to the girl as he remembered her captivating voice. He then decided that she was the one he'd ask to duet with.

And so he made up his mind deciding to try and find her tomorrow so with a smile he drifted off to sleep excited for the next day.

He seemed distracted the next day, he and his friends were once again in the cafeteria having lunch and he had a far-off look on his face which didn't go unnoticed by his friends who were not used to this kind of behavior from him.

Venti could not get her off his mind. Well now that he thought of it..she kinda looks similar to Kazuha in some way. He turned to look at Kazuha who sat in front of him eating his lunch so he called out to him.

"Hey, kazuha?"

"Hm?" kazuha hummed as he stopped eating and faced Venti. "Do you by any chance know a girl who has (H/c) colored hair and (E/c) eyes?" he asked.

Kazuha thought for a second before answering "Oh, you mean my cousin (Y/n)? Don't you remember her?"

"Huh?" venti tilted his head in confusion before shaking it off "Nevermind that, I overheard her singing yesterday and I felt moved by her voice, I wanted to ask her to duet with me."

Kazuha coughed in surprise at this. "W-what? Can't you find someone else?" Venti shakes his head, determination gleaming in his eyes "No, she's perfect, I want her to duet with me" He seemed very persistent in with the idea of singing with her.

Kazuha tried to talk him out of it. "Listen (Y/n) has a pretty bad experience with crowds so I don't think she'll agree that easily." "I'll talk to her then!" Venti exclaims, it's clear that he won't give up so kazuha just sighs and just lets him do his thing since he knows that he won't be able to stop him.

And so the moment the bell rang venti stood up and immediately started sprinting to the classroom.

Venti barged inside the classroom with his bright smile. The students were slowly packing up the classroom, other students were either sitting alone minding their business, or in their friend groups talking to each other.

His eyes wandered around the room until his eyes landed on (Y/n) who was sitting somewhere in the middle row.

The girl had headphones that were placed on her head, her eyes half-lidded from boredom, though he could see a small glint in her eyes that was reflected by the sunlight, her fingers fidgeting with her pen as she took small glances in her notebook before letting out a breathy sigh.

Venti was going to approach her so he walked toward her desk and was about to greet her when the teacher suddenly came through the door, Venti quickly scrambled back to his seat with a disappointed sigh. He looked behind him to take a glance at (Y/n) who was taking off her headphones and hung them lazily on her neck and looked towards the teacher to listen to the lecture.

venti only sighed deciding that he'd ask her after class, so he nodded to himself with a smile waiting for the lecture to end.

After class. venti hurriedly stood up, packed his things, and sprinted to the door to catch up to (Y/n) who was already leaving.

He ended up following (Y/n) to the school gardens where not many people were.

He watches as (Y/n) sits on a bench and takes out her phone to pass the time. He watched her behind a nearby tree as he started to ponder on how he'd start a conversation with her, They never talked before and they would only see each other during class or when she was with her cousin kazuha when walking home.

He was snapped away from his thoughts when he heard a voice.

"I know you're there"

He stepped away from the tree with a sheepish smile and walked in her direction.

"Hey-!"

"Do you need something?"

'So straightforward..!'

Venti got a bit awkward with her straightforward reply, the unbothered look on her face didn't help as well.

"uhm.. you're kazuha's cousin, right? (Y/n)?" 

He asked rather awkwardly which wasn't like him considering how extroverted he was.

(Y/n) nodded "And you're..venti, correct? a friend of Kazuha I assume?"

"uh- Y-yeah.." Venti was already stuttering as he randomly felt awkward around her.

"Is there something you need?" she asked with her head tilted.

"Can you sing?"

"I'm sorry what-?"

"Can you sing?"

He repeated the question, he too sat on the bench near the girl as he looked at her with his bright aqua green eyes full of anticipation.

"No, sorry"

The girl quickly said, too quick as if she was in denial, she turned her head and decided to look down at her lap not looking at him anymore.

Venti pouted at her reply but decided to stay silent, he took note of her body language and took it as a sign that she didn't want to talk anymore. He knew she was lying of course, but he wasn't about to say that he watched her sing yesterday because it would've been weird.

So with a sigh venti also stayed silent as the both of them sat on the bench in the school gardens. The weather was rather nice today. The sun shines bright, casting warm rays. The flowers bloom and sway. The gentle breeze whispers through the trees.

Venti then remembered how he saw her singing yesterday and got an idea. He picked up his guitar and started to play a tune in hopes that he could make her sing.

(Y/n) heard him play the tune and she must admit, he's pretty good. The way he would hit every note so perfectly, even she was enchanted by his playing. She soon found herself lost in the music as her body relaxed, the song that he was playing was familiar to her and she couldn't help but softly hum the tune.

(Lower the volume before you play especially if you're wearing headphones cause I accidentaly made it too loud)

(Y/n) suddenly choked on her breath, she was so caught up in the music that she didn't realize she was singing. Her cheeks turned red in embarrassment from getting caught. She looked towards the boy who was smiling ever so widely, his eyes shining with excitement. She coughed awkwardly as she sweatdropped.

"I mean I kinda do...?"

"why'd you deny it then?!" Venti pouted.

"I'm sorry- but I haven't sung in a while so.." She trailed off

"ehhh?? You have a REALLY pretty voice though!!" Venti exclaims. He wasn't lying, he felt captivated the moment he heard her sing, even if it was just a short while he swore he had just seen an angel, she looked so carefree, so unbothered by the world around them as she allowed herself to get lost in the music.

(Y/n) blush at his words not knowing how to take a compliment. "Uhm...t-thanks I guess..?"

"Anyways..." Venti trailed off and (Y/n) tilted her head at him.

"CAN YOU PLEASE SING FOR ME AND MY FRIENDS?!?!" venti asked with his hands clasped in front of him as he pouted giving her puppy eyes.

"eh? for what reason?"

"I want them to hear your voice!"

(Y/n) thought about this for a moment before she stood up with her bag "I'm sorry, I just can't sing in front of people"

And with that, she left, leaving a disappointed venti alone on the bench.
